Mudrakers Cafe has been here for nearly 2 decades. Came day before New Years Day. Wasn't able to open door. ''Twas either locked or stuck. Turns out they were going to close soon-no business. Not much to offer. Just Americano. Owner agreed to make me a lg. pour over. Got it in minutes. Left soon after. There's a 2d floor in back. Wall has plenty of art work. Didn't study them. Getting ready to leave. Offerings: pastries, salads, sandwiches, coffee. They use Taylor Made blends from Petaluma area. Sips: dark roast pour over (L. 3.95) black -smooth taste, not bold. Seem watered down. Had floral quality to it. Easy sipping. The espresso is good, and the prices are incredibly reasonable. Meh service, weird to be made to feel unwelcome when I first bought coffee ($6) and then later a panini. Even though the cafe was all but empty, the owner mumbled the name of my order, and then left the register sat down farther away. When I paid for each order, I didn't forget to tip. Whatever caused the cruddy service, it wasn't because I skimped on thanking / tipping / cleaning my own dishes. The art on the walls is pleasing, but it's a deal breaker to feel like an intruder in a low-traffic cafe. Won't be coming back, esp since the coffee tastes mediocre. 3 stars becomes 2 since the wifi isn't working, so I had to rely on a phone hotspot. read more

Cozy atmosphere with couches and a back seating area. One of the less crowded cafes in South Berkeley -- good place to do work. I would recommend the cappuccino over the latte. They have several non-coffee food options: sandwiches, salads, falafel which I have yet to try. Super chill spot, at least when I came. Needed a quick smoothie and some computer time and came into Mudrakers. The place was spacious, clean and very quiet. I liked that the music was low enough to hear, but not too loud where I couldn't have a conversation. The owner was nice and the smoothie was good. I like their menu selections. I constantly still think of this Cafe. I did my yoga teacher training next door back in 2013, and I would always go and visit next door. The eggplant sandwich is SO delicious and their dirty chai is great. I'm so glad to hear the cafe is still open because the yoga studio didn't make it through covid. Absolutely delightful cafe right on the corner; quiet and chill. No awkward music tracks like that of more corporate cafes, which made it much easier to just sit and enjoy the latte in front of me. Frequented by some of the students of Willard, who were warmly received by the owner. Just a lovely little community cafe, right outside the bustle of the Berkeley downtown. Came here to study and have some coffee and I'd say this was a pretty average cafe. They have free wifi, it's pretty quiet here, and a decent number of outlets for laptops so that's a couple of pros there. The iced coffee I had had a few grounds floating which I had to carefully scoop off, but the cream cheese filled chocolate muffin was pretty moist, despite having sat in the glass for at least half the day. I would come here more but the location is simply a bit far from campus. One other thing I'd like to add is out out of tune the owner is about the going-ons of Berkeley. My friend tried to make small talk with the owner about graduations going on this week and he had no idea it was even happening. I think I just found my new favorite place! I stopped in Mudrakers Cafe today for the first time to get a quick lunch -- hard to choose but I got the Blue Cheese & Pear salad and it is TO DIE FOR! The kind of salad you might find at some kitschy, hipster sit-down restaurant for $20. Except Mudrakers will give you a better portion. Excellent coffee as well! Cafes are my specialty. Mudrackers wins my approval by being local, serving good coffee and pastries, and going beyond the minimum acceptable cafe menu. The sandwiches are very good, and I favor a plate of hummus with pita bread for a not-too-filling intermediate meal while writing, editing photos, reading and researching the 'Net, and exchanging wry witticisms with the propriator. The tables and couch in the front are comfortable, but I often opt for the tables in the back for more quiet. If I want to open the back door to get some air, I ask other patrons how they feel about it. The owner has no problem with reasonable moves for the sake of comfort. A word about the large-format framed photos on the wall: they are well composed and thought-provoking. I look at them often. Mudrakers is a calm spot in life's storm. read more

I was in the neighborhood and decided to stop by this place to grab some coffee or tea. I pushed my stroller with my son in it through the cafe to the place where you order. The gentleman behind the counter gave me a look, and didn't say anything. I proceeded to say hello, and he hesitated to say anything back, but said a very quiet "hi" to whereas I could I barely even hear him. He didn't say anything else, not even a "I'll be with you in one minute"- - nothing! Living in a town filled with mass chain coffee house options, I like to support independent business like Mudrackers. Mudrackers is conveniently located on Telegraph avenue. The venue is large and it's employees are very friendly. There is ample seating for patrons. The coffee house has a very laid back vibe and makes a wonderful place to study. I visited Mudrackers to conduct some business remotely and it met each of my needs - fast wi-fi, quality customer service, tasty hot chocolate. For me, I find it refreshing to support independent business. I find it less sterilizing than mass chains. When you walk into the coffee house, you can tell is beloved by its owner and the community-at-large. My own qualm with Mudrackers is it's bathroom. The bathroom could use a bit of touching up and cleaning. Nonetheless, I will be returning! read more

I started going to this delightful café because it's close to my doctor's office. Went here one morning to get breakfast for family staying at Alta Bates. There is one staff person who takes the money, makes the coffee & food. He was super impatient with me. There are only 2 cup sizes, small and large, I usually get a medium so I asked to see the cups and he waved to a spot where the cups were stacked, but i couldn't see them, and there's no sample at the cash register. And he was visibly grumpy when I walked over to see the cups. He was also impatient when I asked how many shots were in an iced Americano and what size cup that could come in. I ordered 3 coffees and pastries. Then after paying he took 3 customers after me before starting to make my coffees. I wanted to get a quick bite and given its convenient location, Muddraker's seemed like a good option. My love for independent businesses runs deep and I have a lot of empathy for the owner who was running the cafe all by himself. He seems like a nice person and I would generally advise folks to stick with the baked goods and other items rather than the house made/prepared foods. I ordered an iced coffee and a bagel sandwich with lox. I was disappointed to see him take my cash and then turn around to make my bagel sandwich without putting on any gloves (and later during the process, stop making my bagel sandwich, take somebody else's money and then go back to making my sandwich). Having worked at a lot of restaurants I know there are a number of things that happen that patrons don't want to know about...and this would be one of them. I was also disappointed to find that my bagel hadn't been toasted and was quite soggy. read more

Spring Break 2015 in CA...Nice little café on a corner of Telegraph right across the street from the Rose Garden Inn. This is sort of a bare bones type of café but it still seems to work just fine. The coffee selection was nice and the coffee itself was very good. They have a small selection of sweets to go with your coffee or tea and they were nice too. All the bakery items are made somewhere else and brought in, but still and all they were a nice accompaniment. They also had a number of sandwich items but we did not have any of these...they looked fair. IMHO stick with the coffee and a sweet and you'll never go wrong. The store itself is pretty small...a number of two-person tables along one wall and a few couch seats around a coffee table in front...not much but just enough. Lots of wall outlets for your laptop and easy-to-use WIFI. A couple of large windows frame the front of the store and as such bring in a lot of natural light. There are also a couple of street side tables for those wishing al fresco. Seems to be run by one guy who was pleasant and helpful. read more

I really do.. especially because I see so many people I know come by this place every weekend purely out of convenience. The coffee tastes kinda sour and just not good. It's hard for me to describe it because I'm not even an avid coffee drinker! But trust me, it doesn't take a coffee connoisseur to tell you that the coffee here is not very good at all. Money and food handling makes you feel a little squirmish ... if the flies and stuffiness don't get to you first. The only reason why I come by now is to buy a cold drink that's canned or bottled... which by the way, compared to a lot of other cafes is actually cold. To me, that matters because I strongly dislike a cool soda or a cool Naked Juice, gotta be cold... and this gives the place another star. read more

Every time I am in Berkeley I always visit this little coffee, sandwich, salad spot. I was so happy to see that he made it through the last 15 months!! Small businesses have really been hurting and this was very delightful to have his place still on the corner of Stuart and Telegraph! I always have a latte and a sandwich or salad! Covid has been hard on Hazim, as on many cafe owners. I'm grateful that he has stayed open (tho he closes these days at 3 or 3:30. I like everything I order here - tuna or salmon bagel sandwiches, tuna melt sandwich, pear and blue cheese salad, Mediterranean plate.
