I live in Kansas City. I am spoiled when it comes to Bbq. I have tried practically every Bbq restaurant and joint in the city. I drive for miles to try the new restaurants and keep going back to the old favorites. While in Columbia I had to try Como Smoke and Fire. First of the service was great. The ambiance is rustic. The restaurant is clean. The table was sticky even though it was clean. I had the combination plate. With burnt ends, pulled pork, brisket, turkey, sausage, beans and fries. The fries were the only good thing on the plate. Everything was bland. No smoke flavor really. The burnt ends were chewy little cubes. The sauces were fair. This was a miss for Bbq. It gets a three simply because of the service. The Bbq was a two. This Bbq would not survive in KC. read more

So 12 years ago I went to COMO Smoke and Fire, and I was not impressed. The burnt ends were terrible. A couple of years go by, and I tell my husband we should give them another try. I'm so glad I did. They have so many good options there. You could eat there every day for a week and not get sick of it. Love the pulled pork and bacon mac n cheese sandwich. Love so many things. So good! BUT I will say that I actually do love their burnt ends... sometimes. I get got so frustrated with the inconsistency of the burnt ends, that I completely stopped ordering them. It's a coin toss whether you get them, and they're tender and delicious, or you get them, and they're so tough you can't even chew them... like they're inedible. What a disappointment, ordered the smoked fried pork tenderloin. Took two bites off the side, it was extremely over smoked. Then I went to take a bite and the center was frozen. Not cold, I mean ice. I let the waitress know and immediately chose another quick bbq item as you know those are sitting there ready to go. Waited another 15, got my food and there might have been two ounces of meat on the $19 plate. Waitress came back and brought me the bill and explained she took care of taking off the tenderloin but charged us full price. My partner also thought his meal was tasteless. Item on children's menu listed incorrect price for Mac and Cheese (BTW, $10 for kid's Mac and Cheese is outrageous). They refused to modify the bill. Will not be returning to a restaurant that violates state law (Missouri Merchandising Practices Act). Beyond that, the prices have ballooned out of control. Probably the best in the Midwest! We're from South Dakota so we don't get true bbq often and from living in North Carolina for a while we miss bbq very much. We had their Smoked/fried Pork tenderloin sandwich, Como brisket sandwich, and the burnt ends sandwich. All were amazing we split them between 3 people. One of the sides the flying salad (I probably messed up the name terribly) was really good . I also appreciate that they had fresh fries and from what I could tell in house made pickles and sauces. So if you're ever pulling off I-70 stop here to get gas and bbq. Ps. I would sell your sauces because I would have definitely bought a set. read more

The restaurant is in a small strip mall by a gas station. Easy to find and plenty of parking. Upon entering I was greeted by the host, I told her I was a party of one. She pointed a small two top table that was right by the entrance and exit to the kitchen and against the divider between the entrance of the building and in the dining room. I asked if I could sit somewhere other than by the entrance to the kitchen and she showed me to another table. My Server showed up very shortly after I was seated, and ask what I would like to drink. The menu was laid out nicely and easy to navigate. I ordered the half rib dinner and requested the large end of the ribs. I also ordered the mac & cheese and a side salad as my sides. The side salad came out with my meal, which kind of surprise me, but was OK. The kitchen did give me the large end of the baby back ribs. They looked very good unfortunately the kitchen did not take the time to peel the membrane off the back of the ribs which, although it was fairly easy to peel off. I found it very surprising that anyone would serve that very fibrous and tough back membrane on their ribs. The ribs were tender, but unfortunately, somewhat overcooked while they did fall off the bone the meat had somewhat of a mushy flavor to it. I did not have dessert, but did like the offering that they offered. I would recommend going, however I would just be aware of the fact that if you order ribs, you may have that tough back membrane on there, which might make them hard to eat. read more

Ambiance is a local BBQ joint, also attached to a gas station. - Smoked wings (4.5/5): We had heard these wings on first place in Columbia, and they were delicious. Soo much sauce which I love. We were in town for state track and decided to hit this place up on our way home. I am sure glad we did!!! It is so good and the service is fast!! My daughter got the como slowmo, I got the tenderloin and my husband got the burnt end sandwich. Our waitress was so sweet and advised us that the como was a little messy and recommended the coleslaw on the side. She asked my husband if he liked fattier meats or leaner and made suggestions on what to order! There are paper towels and silverware on the table so you can grab them at your convenience and not have to wait. It wasn't freezing cold inside like some restaurants, there was a nice bar area you could sit at, outdoor patio as well. Great BBQ! I tried it when in Columbia, and it was just about as close to perfect BBQ as you'll find. Only 3 sauces though, a sweet one, a mildly spicy one, and a golden one. I wish they'd offer a 2 or 3 meat combo plate, but the combo plate is pretty much unchangeable. Having said that, the pulled pork and brisket were absolutely perfect, the hot links very good, and the burnt ends fatty (I guess they're supposed to be but I hate any fat on my food). Nothing particularly fancy about the place, just delicious BBQ. I really like that the meat is served dry so you can use the sauce you prefer. I thought it was a bit on the pricy side but the plate was absolutely enormous, and I couldn't finish it all! I will definitely be returning next time I'm in Columbia. If you like Cuban sandwiches, Como did a smoked version, very tasty, my wife Karen had the Karen, a sandwich with turkey, avocado and red pepper, I had onion rings on the side, my wife had sweet potato fries. After a long day of moving our daughter from UofL School of Medicine to Mizzou for residency, we sat down for our first family meal in Columbia at the COMO Smoke and Fire. We had a lovely waitress who gave us excellent service (thanks, Jennifer Knapp!) and the menu was loaded with all of our favorites. The fried green tomatoes and portobello mushroom appetizers were a perfect start. The baked potatoes were massive and perfectly done. Everyone ordered something different from the pit menu, and all four of us raved about our food and shared bites across the table. You never know which way things are going to go when you pull up and the restaurant is attached to a gas station. I got there at 11:40 AM and there were only a couple seats left, by the time I left, there were people waiting out the front and back door. I really enjoyed the funnel cake fries at this place!!! Its always on my mind haha!! It was a genuis idea to make funnel cake into fries. I am a fan as my comment suggests! I have had their other foods but not a huge fan. The beans are good and the burnt ends satisfied my need. PSA: this is long review! if you don't read it all, just trust me and head to COMO smoke and fire and try it out for yourself. Ordered: Loaded fries w. Pulled pork (not pictured) Sample plate w. Cold potato salad and baked beans CoMo Burger w. Mac and cheese Service: Even in a Friday night we were seated in 5 min. The hostess was very friendly. If you have to wait I recommend you preview the menu because it's going to be hard to decide what to eat. Our waitress was so friendly and answered our questions. She refilled our water without being asked. The fries were freshly made and crispy even with all the toppings. The cheese mixture on the fries was not your average nacho cheese but whatever it was it was yummy! I think next time I'll order it with brisket and extra jalapeños. The burger is big and loaded. This particular burger had bell peppers and onion. My favorite sides were the baked beans and the Mac and cheese. I checked other reviews and they had dry Mac and cheese. That wasn't my case. My Mac and cheese was cheesy and very creamy! I would definitely order again. The baked beans had a little kick and I could taste some of their "little heat" bbq sauce and had chunks of ham in it. SO GOOD! The cold pasta salad was missing a little flavor and the potatoes were to firm for my taste. If you're not sure what smoked meats to get I highly recommend getting the sample plate. The meats on the sample plate depends on what's available. I had a hot link, smoked Turkey, pulled pork, brisket, ribs. They were all SO GOOD! Lastly the BBQ sauces. The "liquid gold" is a vinegar based sauce and is definitely more tangy. The "something sweet" isn't too sweet and a bit more runny. My favorite was "little heat". I recently got takeout from Como Smoke and Fire South. I brought it straight home to eat it. The food was not good at all.. Mac and cheese was a brick and very bland. Burnt ends were tough. Ribs and wings were alright but overall, everything tasted overcooked or possibly reheated. Onion rings might've been okay if they were eaten fresh but they were soggy. I wonder if takeout was an option before COVID or if this was their way of surviving the pandemic.. either way, maybe my experience wasn't great because this food just isn't meant for takeout? I've been there a number of times, mostly by myself, and the food is wonderful. I especially love the Carolina burger. This past Saturday I wanted something different so I tried the Cuban sandwich. It was okay. The meats were flavorful but the ham slice was too thick for the sandwich and I had difficulty eating it. Overall I was pleased. Very disappointing. For one, waited an hour for a simple To-go order for one person. Meat was ok, nothing bad but not spectacular. Sides aren't made there, it's packaged. Ordered a premium side that they were out of (waited an hour to find that out) and then had to take an item that wasn't a premium so I was overcharged. The other side was wrong so couldn't eat that. Bartender was very nice but kitchen obviously has problems. They must have been running low on meat too because the portions were pretty small. Not worth the wait or the price on this visit. Spend 60 dollars on 2 orders. get home to find my Big Texas order has no bread and skimped on everything else. I ordered at the bar because you have thrown toast on a gluten free order before and cant be trusted to order online. Kitchen staff comes out to clarify with the bartender about gluten free, bartender doesnt clairify with me at all. Why in the hell would you hold the bread but but onion rings on the order. Today was my last day eating at Como Smoke and Fire. I could have got 2x the brisket ordering the platter... but i ordered the big Texas, you dont ask me a question. and just give me 4 strips of brisket with 4 pickles and 2 onion rings. I would give this Bbq place a 3.5. The service was fast and friendly and the food was fresh. The sides were mediocre we had the Mac and cheese and cheese potatoes I think they were made with the same cheese base and could had used more seasoning. The Asian Brussels sprouts weren't that good particularly because they needed a good char and better seasoning. The brisket sandwich was good had a good portion of meat tasted great with the bbq sauce. The meat servings for the combo were a bit small for $20-$25. We won't be back! My husband and I took 2 of daughter's and their families so there were 14 of us. At first the hostess didn't really care if we were there, finally got seated and someone finally came over and took our order, he seemed like a nice kid but really couldn't get our order straight. * it was 4:00 in the afternoon they were not busy So the food came, it was cooler than expected. I ordered the tenderloin and house chips, my sandwich was overcooked and very tough. The food took forever to come out and he kept forgetting some of the kids meals. My husband ordered the Cuban and it was so tough he had trouble eating it. I won't go through our entire order, but our ticket was 94.00 and my daughters family was 134.00 nowhere did it say that a 20% gratuity would be added, so just on us they mad almost 40.00 tip. Now with that being said I don't appreciate it that! My family's are great tippers when service and food are above the normal standards but truthfully the service and food was sub-par. I feel like it is unethical to automatically add a tip, because if you have bad service or shitty food your screwed. So I will not be back to como smoke and fire south ever again. Was visiting in Columbia. Needed good BBQ lunch. Como BBQ is out of town and had a lot of business from workers and others. We got a table quickly and friendly server got me a cold beer with waters. Couldn't decide so got a sampler with all meats. Everything was tender with nice smoke flavor. IMHO perhaps a bit overcooked. Brisket and ribs dry. Pork and turkey very nice. Spicey sausage.
