Only four stars because this place, like any corner store, stocks everyday items with too great of a markup ($8 bag of chips??!?!). However, I still go visit their deli counter regularly because their sandwiches are bangin'. The sandwiches are huge, delicious, out fast, and made with high quality ingredients - on par with Yellow Door, and a significant cut above the Boar's Head counter at Safeway. Reading the rest of the reviews, it sounds like the hot sandwiches could be a bit of a miss, but I've enjoyed everything on the cold side of the house, Coach Roy (no mayo) being my favorite. After a walk around Piedmont Park, I stopped in Mulberry's Market for lunch. I was surprised to see a great variety of products from cleaning supplies to treats, baking items to pet food, and fresh produce. They had cold and hot sandwiches, numerous prepared foods, and snacks (corn dogs, empanadas, potato chips, cookies, and salads). The sandwich order of 6 was prepared relatively quickly. Our party was able to eat outside and join another family on the patio. There are also two benches for a street view. The Royanne (warm pastrami) sandwich was simple and delicious. The Dijon mustard and spicy coleslaw with jalapeño amped up the flavor without overpowering the briny pastrami. Other sandwiches in our order (the Denis and South of the Border) were not as loved, but the corn dog was satisfying. read more

I've been into sandwiches lately & wanted to try a new place in Oakland. Tucked inside a small little corner lies Mulberry Market. Order: The Crombie- double salami, mortadella, provolone, lettuce,tomato & pepperoncini on sourdough. Although they ran out of the sourdough bread the white bread substitute didn't effect the outcome. The amount of meat is plentiful & you really have to take a big bite to get to the meat. The Crombie is a great new addition to their already delicious sandwiches. So come hungry & leave happy! read more

It's convenient being the only market in Piedmont and close to the park but they take advantage of that with their outrageous prices.

Quality deli and selection. The woman that made my sandwich knew the magical ratio. Maybe it's because everyone else's prices have gone up so much but it didn't seem unreasonably expensive for the quality. I'm done with this place. I've repeatedly ordered sandwiches here in the evenings, costing $16-$17 each, and they've consistently been disappointing. The sandwiches always have just one thin slice of turkey, folded to appear as two, a single small slice of cheese, and an overwhelming amount of lettuce and bread. The first time I ordered, the sandwich was completely dry--no condiments at all. After I complained to management, they offered a gift card as compensation, which I was thankful for. However, the last two times I ordered, the same issues persisted. Each sandwich was prepared by the same young woman working behind the counter in the evenings, and I'm not sure if this reflects a problem with management or the staff. While the most recent sandwich did include mayo, the amount was so minimal it made no difference. Once again, I was left with a dry sandwich and the same meager portions of turkey and cheese. While Mulberry's Market is convenient, I can drive less than half a mile to Piedmont Avenue and find numerous options for far more substantial sandwiches at $10-$11." Updating my Mulberry's Market review from 2014 - They brought back Peet's Coffee a couple of years ago, thank goodness. Now my only complaint (other than high prices) is what seems to be an emphasis on variety rather than quality when it comes to treats like ice cream, chocolate and candy. But the staff is always friendly and it's once again a good place to get sandwiches, espresso drinks, pastries and missing recipe ingredients needed at the last minute. read more

So with the mention of this little market before our next destination, I was on board for a pit stop. In we walk to cute little Mulberry's. I was hoping they would have a salad bar, but no luck. They do have a deli and pre-made salads. I am willing to drop the $$$ for good food, but their shelf stable items are a new level. I am talking general grade supermarket items and some specialty items. Those that caught my eye were the $9 halo top ice cream and powdered peanut butter (2X the price). Anyway, I wanted a salad which was surprisingly normal priced at $10. It was pretty yummy too with eggplant, sundried tomatoes, goat cheese, and carmelized onions. The deli is also normally priced. This hot sandwich features a breaded chicken cutlet, spicy coleslaw, ranch dressing, and hot sauce on a delightfully crunch sourdough roll. It gives me both fried chicken sandwich and banh mi vibes at the same time. If that's not a winning combination, I don't know what is. My husband and I have been grateful for the occasional sandwich from Mulberry's to mix up the work from home grind. He's all about the Settlemonster and from now on my order is the Colbert. Deli has the worst customer service! I've been there a lot. I try to always be kind bc that is what we all should be. I go in and nobody ever asks to help me. Space is at a premium so the aisles are tight, but shelves are neatly organized. I grabbed an Acme baguette for snacking in the car (bread is LIFE!), I also picked up Dave's Killer bread and noticed the small print of the price tag on the shelf: $7.99. My husband got sucked in by their milkshake machine. He grabbed a mocha flavored one, inserted it in the machine and it mixes it to achieve a slushy consistency. Support local ! The line situation was confusing . As a first timer I had trouble getting service . There are two lines one for coffee and one for sandwiches and salads. It's a small market so when there is a long line it can be crowded making the "order here "sign hard to see . A bigger sign would be helpful . Not many choices for lunch in "downtown" Piedmont but the deli sandwiches at Mulberry's hit the spot and the prices are not too terrible given prices in the rest of the market. The Heafey $8.95 is a good-sized portion: love the moist, flavorful turkey meatloaf with tomatoes, lettuce, chipotle mayo and hold the red onion. Plenty of other good options like the Settlemonster (turkey and cranberries) and the Dr Josh. Always fresh since made to order. I had a really good roasted vegetable salad here today with goat cheese on mixed greens with a vinaigrette and found a pretty cool neon notebook. The market is cute and I also bought some handmade butterscotch candies that tasted good and very buttery but gave me a strange sugary high. I walked to the park with my old friend who is usually very combative but today we just sat in the shade on the grass in the park appeased by these great handmade salads and the lull of a day passing slowly. We left and kept remarking how good the salads were and that they were made fresh in the deli and wow we should get them again. I go to Mullberry's at least twice a week. The sandwiches and pastries are delicious and ice cream is from Fenton's. The staff is friendly and responsive, especially Dolly and Antonio. They have a great selection of fresh food, and the price is a little high, but not unreasonable for the quality. The market type items are pricey compared to a supermarket, but fairly comparable to a small market. The only time you don't want to go to Mullberry's is during the 45 minutes that Piedmont the Middle School and High School are off for lunch, because it's within short walking distance, and there's a line out the door. read more

Five stars, I would go higher if possible. Here's the deal, the prices are higher, this is a TINY market, unlike Bonfair that stood before it, there is no other large company affiliation. There is a major difference in price when you buy two cases of Oreos versus 100 and ship them to various stores so Mulberry's is paying the most money possible for groceries. The best part of Bonfair was the Icee machine, which stayed, in addition to the frozen yogurt machine, milkshake machine and Fenton's hand scooped ice cream counter.Some people would argue that Peet's coffee is a local commodity and hands down better than Starbucks? The baristas are almost uniformly consisitient in making my drinks, the milk is foamy and not scalded. They treat their employees fairly well, I'm making a crazy assumption but I'm sure they pay them decent wages as they have had very little turnover in the four years I've frequented them. At 6:15pm, when everything is ready for dinner, I can slide into Mulberry's and buy mango chutney, ditto the Chevre, baguette, half and half and frozen ready to bake Duarte's Oalliaberry pie and the frozen corn dogs for the picky people. If their beer selection is a wee thin, their wine selection makes up for it. I'm in and out of my house, their store and back home by 6:25. Good luck even finding a parking space at Safeway in ten minutes? Their baked goods are plentiful in the morning, however as any decent business-they hope to run out of goods and not have leftovers that are simply a loss item? My kids have eaten their way through every deli sandwich on their menu and raved about all of them. I've had their deli cater a few events for upwards of 100 people and whether the folks were support staff from the local hospital, ladies who lunch or all the local teachers: EVERYONE has raved about the food.
