    The Crombie-loaded with meat
    Sherri W.

I've been into sandwiches lately & wanted to try a new place in Oakland. Tucked inside a small little corner lies Mulberry Market. Order: The Crombie- double salami, mortadella, provolone, lettuce, tomato & pepperoncini on sourdough. Although they ran out of the sourdough bread the white bread substitute didn't effect the outcome. The amount of meat is plentiful & you really have to take a big bite to get to the meat. The Crombie is a great new addition to their already delicious sandwiches. So come hungry & leave happy!

    A pretty good lunch salad!

It was Sunday of an already long day. I had woken up at 8 AM and had taught two workout classes and visited 4 different cities. At already almost 2 PM, I was hungryyy. So with the mention of this little market before our next destination, I was on board for a pit stop. In we walk to cute little Mulberry's. I was hoping they would have a salad bar, but no luck. They do have a deli and pre-made salads. I am willing to drop the $$$ for good food, but their shelf stable items are a new level. I am talking general grade supermarket items and some specialty items. Those that caught my eye were the $9 halo top ice cream and powdered peanut butter (2X the price). Anyway, I wanted a salad which was surprisingly normal priced at $10. It was pretty yummy too with eggplant, sundried tomatoes, goat cheese, and carmelized onions. The deli is also normally priced. Not a giant overall selection since it is a small, local market but if you know how to pick you can walk out with something that fits your requirements.

One needs multiple choices of ice cream

It's convenient being the only market in Piedmont and close to the park but they take advantage of that with their outrageous prices.

Produce is also excellent with organic and non-organic on virtually every item. Cheese corner is really good with dozens of varieties and sizes. I like their liquor and wine section, and can't imagine very many situations where they couldn't cover my needs. The prepared food is not worth the trip for that alone, and is really pretty uninspiring. They stock everything I need. They have great, consistent people working check out. Prices are higher than Safeway. Specialty stuff is not as strong as Diablo Foods in Lafayette.

Looking for cheese? There is a hidden nook across from the meat case that offers an amazing, well curated selection of cheeses. Prices in some areas are a little bit higher than somewhere like WF, but they are not a massive corporation, so it is understandable. The staff works like a friendly cohesive team offering great customer service. The market was full of customers, but they did a fantastic job at not allowing lines to form. I plan on making Piedmont Grocery one of my regular stops!

Market Hall Foods is bit like a smaller Draegers. They carry specialty pantry items such as spices, jams, jellies, as well as cold items like cheese and milk and hot pre-made dishes and rotisserie chicken. I will say however that it feels like such an odd design for a grocery store and was fairly difficult to navigate. While I love that they carry small business brand dates, they don't carry sustainable small business seaweed like Strong Arm Farms. All in all, the service was friendly and I definitely love their outside seating they share with Highwire, but the space itself could use a renovation for crowd control.

Anchovy pasta had good flavor and fortunately wasn't too salty, as anchovy pastas tend to run the risk of. But the bottom of the bowl had about a 1/3 cup of oil left. Basically so much oil that the sauce had separated. It was off-putting. I felt like it was some kind of college student takeout food. Which is fine, just price it accordingly. IMO this is too pricey for what you get. And not worth the calories.
