This local pub in downtown Providence on Empire street is close the Roger Williams Campus, so it attracts lots of college aged kids. The bar has over 35 different beers to try, quick inexpensive bites to eat, a jukebox, a pool table, and a dartboard, and not to mention the occasional live band. Nothing beats a nice cold glass of Whalers's local Rhode Island beer. The ambiance is a bit dark but the beer choices are pretty good. read more

WARNING This was the WORST bar experience I've ever had in my entire life. My friend asked the price of a green tea shot and the bartender, Adam, looked at him like he had 3 heads. Adam made a rude comment to my friend saying that he shouldn't be at a bar if he can't afford a shot. My friend then asked if he could have a beer and Adam told him no. My friend asked again, and he proceeded to stare at him for 30 seconds without answering. Adam said he would not serve him without giving any reason. Then, when my other buddy and I asked to get a drink, he said he wouldn't serve us either. We then walked out. Adam is a genius businessman as he refuses to serve his customers and instead hopes to lose profits for Muldowney's!!! Whoever hires these bartenders needs a better screening process. Never again. What a complete joke and waste of 15 minutes this place was. read more

Probably the only dive bar left in PVD. Cheap(er) drinks, decent but not too friendly staff, good live music when they have it, and a "bouncer" at the door to keep folks in check. I like that it's open later than most other places, so I've ended the night here a few times, then moved along to get wieners. read more

On a random trip to providence I was looking for some dive bars to stop at and found this place. Had seating outside. We went in and we're greeted by a friendly lady bartender who's been working there for over 15+ years. They had Karaoke which the sound was subpar( hard to hear the person singing ) they had pool tables draft beers and seemed like late at night everyone who works in the service industry comes here before they close. PBR's $2, and the company is good. They have a DJ some nights, and they have karaoke other nights. Pool table, and an ATM. You're allowed to bring your beers that are in cups outside to drink. Cash only, and everyone will know your name/ knows each other. Service was quick, and if you sit on the wrong side of the bar the people playing pool will ask you to move every 15 seconds. Maybe I just like this place because two chicks hit on me when I walked in, sure they were drunk, and it was probably because I was dressed so out of place that the forbidden fruit must be tasted...but I like to think it was my lumberjack musk that wafted over to them and aroused the senses, demanding satisfaction. Either way, check it out if you're downtown and are all like 'woh i only have 10 bucks left, is there anywhere we can just go chill, buy cheap beers and scope out da shawtiez? This is definitely a dive bar. If you don't like dive bars don't come here. If you don't want to encounter an older male crowd then don't come here. If you don't have cash, don't come here - it's cash only. What I like about this place: It is consistently less crowded than all the other bars in Providence. It has outdoor seating where you can drink and people watch. They have a turkey burger with sweet potato fries for like $7.00. Pitchers are all domestic but cheap nonetheless. The bartender is usually always an older women and very sweet even bringing my food outside for me. I've been by myself before and being a 24 year old female some of the characters can be a little weird especially when you're outside smoking but all are harmless and from what I have gathered - good natured. Here you will not find: - pretentiousness - credit card readers - fancy mixed drinks Assuming there is a mainstream american sporting event taking place, it will be showing on one of the television screens. I SWEAR last time I was at Muldowney's, there was a counter along the far wall. I sweahtagahd! However, last time I was at Muldowney's was in 2008, when I was shooting jello shots in syringes, keeping my cousin from jumping out of moving vehicles and into snowbanks, and preventing said cousin from beligerently throwing bottles at people. So I could be wrong about the counter. But I clearly remember it!! Apparently I was wrong (see also: drunk). Muldowney's is a solid Irish bar (again, not how I remember it). Beer is wicked cheap and the Red Sox game is on. There are the requesite plethora of bros hanging around outside. There were no jello shots to be found this last time, which was sort of a disappointment if you ask me. I managed to stay out of trouble (at least in public) in Providence last weekend, which is sort of sinful in and of itself. The bartender was super nice, and again, this place is super cheap. I have such mixed feeling about this place. Downey's has been my "Cheers" for the last 2 years or so, but lately the crowd has seemed to of changed a lot. We used to be able to walk in there and know everyone and enjoy a drama free night. It seems as though in the last few months when we go it's either hit or miss. Sometimes it's the regulars, sometimes it's a mix of people, and sometimes it's just a plain circus. They have themed nights (free pool Mondays, $3 tini Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday is karaoke, and Thursday is a hip-hop DJ) which influences the crowd a bit. Drinks are strong and fairly priced for being a bar in Providence. The bartenders are all really friendly (90% of the time, you can't always expect people to be happy on a constant) although some have a much wider knowledge of cocktails than others. Outdoor seating is a plus. Food before 10 is a plus. Size is a minus. All in all, it's worth a shot if you want some cheap drinking. read more

We stumbled into this pub out of desperation as newcomers to the city. We wanted someplace cheap to drink and watch a hockey game. The bartender was friendly and gladly put the game on for us. Beers were super cheap ($2) and we were provided with free peanuts to snack on. The patrons were friendly, we had excellent service, and the bathrooms were clean. The crowd and vibe of the bar was interesting- it was a total dive but I loved it. Well this is not your bells and whistles fancy bar. It's Irish so it's simple..Great alcohol cheap. Come here if you want to wind down on a weekday or just catchup for a drink with a friend, music is a mix of the yesterday's and today's classics mixed with Irish tunes . It's cash only so make sure you have some bills on ya. Alcohol is cheap bud light is 2.50 draft and a henney on the rocks is 7 so you get the idea. The crowd is mostly middle aged to older. I will NEVER go back to this bar! Sunday night, Veteran's Day, we took our two veteran friends with Purple Hearts out for some drinks and ended up going to Muldowney's. There was a couple trays of food out so my friend grabbed some fries and the bartender started screaming at us that we are disgusting and how dare we eat the food that was out (we honestly thought it was for veteran's day; plus it was cold food and there was no sign) so we apologized, but the bartender kept degrading us so we walked out and he seriously followed us with a spoonful of food and asked if he could feed us like we were less than human. If I could give zero stars, I would. Completely unprofessional and NOT how you treat Veterans ON Veteran's Day. You should be ashamed of yourself. I really like this hole in the wall pub, we were served right away and the bartenders were really nice. They dont accept credit cards but there is an ATM inside and my wonderful bank rebates those pesky foriegn ATM fees! Can't wait to go again! read more
