I only came here for a friend, as this place is not my cup of tea but I still had a great time. Cheap drinks, casual atmosphere. There are only a couple tables and it's pretty small inside but it wasn't entirely packed when I was there. I would come back here with no complaints. If you're not from the area, it can be hard to miss the building and/or parking lot as it's kind of on a corner of two streets. However, a plus is there's plenty of parking! read more

Solid brew selection Nice bartenders Standoffish vibe I hesitate to say this place makes non-regulars feel unwelcome, but it's pretty certain that the dish on the Dog is that the regulars do want to keep it to themselves, I suspect. No fault in that - and not much challenge, either, given its stand-alone location on the precipice of Rt. 6, standing as a sturdy, squat bastion of rock & booze along Westminster. I like this joint, but I don't think it likes me back as well. Hard to describe, but there's an air of people having fun AT each other, rather than WITH each other when I mosey in. I should say that I like to frequent this place late in the evening, maybe as a fourth or fifth stop, and so it's well-oiled and underway when I arrive, sometimes near last call. Experience may vary for earlier arrivals - and I'll keep that on my own to-do list as well. On the flip side, I think it's intriguing that I've been half a dozen times or more and still don't have the place completely figured. I think that's the kind of late-night bar I want...most of the action within a certain range of expectedness, but with the possibility of something story-worthy happening, too. Pinball, pool, and that fine selection of cold brew-nami's don't hurt. I'll keep heading back. As if nature itself was to make amends and restore the perfect hop balance to our world, I was lucky enough to find out about the Scurvy Dog the same day as my worse than dreadful experience at Union Station (http://www.yelp.com/biz/union-station-brewery-providence-providence#hrid:je8VRpa69G5Ftjmw_oAVmQ). This place is a bar mans bar, and you can tell by the people who flock to it, and most importantly the bartender himself. The name pretty much gives away what bit of a "theme" can be derived here, although calling it that would be a disservice to the true bar-lke qualities it possesses, like not really having a theme. There are a fair amount of Jolly Rogers' and other assorted skull and bones paraphernalia around the place, but not so much as to make you hate it, or maybe even notice unless you're by yourself like me and trying to take everything in. There is also an abundance of Elvis portraiture in the men's bathroom, and an equal amount of Marilyn stuff in the women's. I didn't bother to inquire about the fascination, just chalked it up to another bit of Providence quirk. My only bit of dissatisfaction with this place came short after entering, when I ordered my first beer. Having just had some of the worst dredge to ever call itself alcohol I was really looking forward to a nice pint of something hearty and delicious. Unlike my usual tendency to examine every item on the beer list, I just asked the bartender what he had in the dark variety. His response was a disappointing "Guinness and Smithwicks" blah. While neither beer is really bad, I wanted something real, with character, not cookie cutter. Not long after my first few sips I spotted several selections I would have preferred much more than the Smithwicks I went with. So, wanting to hang out here a bit more, I ordered the 22oz Stone Smoked Porter next (for a mere $7 I might add). This hit the spot, as I knew it would, and I settled in for an interesting night in one of the coolest bars I've been to in quite some time. read more

Great music, great craft beer and great atmosphere. Great is the trend here because this place makes you feel welcomed and like you should probably leave all other dive bars in the dust. Don't get me wrong, it's dark, dingy and everything is painted black but that's the rough exterior...sit down, reserve judgement and you'll be in for a great time! I have been trying to get to this place for a couple months now but they are not open during the day. I am a day drinker. Great selection of high end craft beers on tap and the bartender was very knowledgeable about the beer they have. My friend Steve asks a lot of questions and he was tolerant of him. Let me preface this review with: As a metal head - I find the Scurvy Dog to be a pretty rad place to check out. Not that it's a metal bar, but it's a bar where people from all sorts of those "niche" crowds hang out. The metal guys, the "goths", I'll just say the more "open minded" crowds. All I could think while I was at the Scurvy Dog was it felt like your boyfriend's bachelor pad. Who's kinda into hard rock/punk/metal. Who brought some odd souvenirs back from Mexico. Who has really great taste in beer. The Scurvy is dark, small, dingy and bare bones, but there's something comfortable about it. Maybe it's the pool table. Maybe it's the friendly barstaff. Once upon a time there was a bar full of drug dealers and alcoholics made famous by a TV show it was called The Green Bar. It closed. Then it opened again and then suddenly it was closed again. Then one day a couple of smart punk rock boys bought it. They cleaned it and painted it and renamed it the Scurvy Dog. We went in for a cocktail last night and ran into local rocks stars. 4 stars? 5 stars? Seriously? No f-ing way. Not on it's best day. Or night. I had read the reviews. I was amped to stop in. You know, to see what the hype (and reviews) was about. What is was about was utter disappointment. I like, no actually, I LOVE dive bars. Real ones. Authentic ones. This is not that place. It tries too hard to be a dive bar. You see, dive bars evolve over time. They are not decorated to be one. True dive bars develop and mature and age like a fine wine. Okay, not like a fine wine at all. Like cheese? Yeah, maybe like cheese. They get moldy. They aren't painted and decorated to look like they have street cred. The person trying to get the music going was technology impaired. She was trying to hook her laptop up to a mixer up to the sound system. The only thing she actually accomplished was an annoying mix of feedback, static and eardrum shattering noise. Ahhh, but the positives. The bartender seemed like a decent guy and he mixed a passable cocktail. Nothing fancy but the expectations were low. Beer options were plentiful. The Scurvy Dog is a great spot to get sloshed on "slippery nipple" shots and pogo around the pool table late on a weeknight. I know that slippery nipples are as amateur hour as wine coolers, but it's become something of a tradition in my circle to have them here. I was a punk rock teen, so it's a real nostalgia kick to howl along to Black Flag, The Misfits and Plastic Bertrand. No one will mind that you're totally unhinged; in fact, look around you: others are singing too. The bartender Terry, whose dour expression is a false alarm, will jovially recommend drinks with names like "the oatmeal cookie" when you're drunk, disorderly and blathering on about girls night and how desperately you need something sweet, fabulous and rimmed in sugar. This place can get somewhat packed and my pals on the prowl have said it's the top spot in Providence to locate hot freaky types of questionable virtue. A final tip: This place is far too loud for any kind of genuine human connection to occur. If you want to have a meeting of the souls, I suggest you go to The Avery instead. read more

Whenever my friends come to visit me in Providence, there's usually some lofty party destination for our evening in mind but it always comes down to "Fuck this. Scurvy?" 2 blocks from my house, a playlist full of classic goth, punk and metal, cheap drinks and (seasonal) visits from the Poco Loco taco truck make this one of the places I fought for custody over in a recent breakup. A gin and tonic costs $3.75. Scorpion bowls, only available on Mondays, cost $12 and will get 2 people wrecked. Pool is free. This place looked pretty sketch from the outside. Like--I mean--tiny little black box w/no sign. I picked this place for my boyfriend's actual 21st birthday bar-trip and I started out sweating bullets as everyone looked at this little shit brick like : "Is this really where you've taken us?" Inside the guy checking IDs immediately clapped my boyfriend on the back and warmly showed him a shot of tequila in celebration. Once inside--it was nice and warm (burrr winter in NE!) cute punky deco w/ NICE CLEAN BATHROOMS!!!!! The bartender was a sweetheart, and mixed us some lovely girly drinks while the men drank their share of beer and whiskey. The music was amazing--they played shit I'd actually want to listen to and decent decibels, rather than deafening me with the latest Britney or Kelly Clarkson cut. And after drinking in Boston --I was floored by how cheap the drinks were! but the fifth star goes out--no question--to the barkeep picking up my boyfriend's 6 drink tab in celebration of his birthday!! The first thing that attracted me to the Scurvy Dog a couple years ago was its lack of windows. And it's lack of doors. Lack of color... just lack of everything. It literally is a mysterious black box. And I had to look inside. Now, Scurvy is the final stop (#3) on my favorite West Side pub crawl. Why? Because when all the other West Side bars close at midnight, Scurvy is open until 2 am (1am Sun-Th). Because on Fridays, Poco Loco Tacos shines like a beacon for drunken sailors from the Scurvy parking lot. Because when I get inside, the first thing I stumble upon is the bar-- it's RIGHT THERE. Can't miss it. Because Scurvy serves all sorts-- from metalheads to hipsters to preppy college students. No judgment here. And because, in this cozy, dimly lit space, they're always playing great music (anything from metal to 90's), and they always have a well-priced beer waiting for me. So be adventurous. This bar took a while getting used to. I used to feel super claustrophobic because it's literally a box with no windows... and the after E&O/Avery crowd was a bit much... BUT... I've grown to like the place. It's a Good Ol' fashion dive bar. Good beer, good service, good decor... and I like to play pinball! I am definitely gettin jiggy wit dis place. As everyone has said, it's a small unassuming building, basically resembles the Kaa`ba in Mecca. Ya I went there, google it. Except the people inside are probably more chill and drinkin some saweet craft beers. I am definitely down with this place; It's open late, cheap, bartenders nice and the crowd was pretty positive. I went on a weeknight with some people after an elite event ::brushes some lower class dust off his shoulders:: and we were able to talk about everything at a normal audible level and get some great drinks. I'd definitely want to come back and check out this place on a weekend night when the real metal heads come out and the music is blasting more. Absolutely going to put this place on my, "Stop in for a night cap after drinking at a preppy bar and need to pick up a metal chick to bring home so we both can climax at the drop in the song End of the World by God Forbid album version" list. I love this bar! Cheap prices, I can always count on knowing at least 2 out of 4 people there and it's dark but clean! Sometimes they'll have an outdoor bbq with bands that's always fun- the food is really good too! You'll probably want to friend or like their facebook page for a heads up on these though. I guess I can allude to to the fact that it's a punk bar, but growing up punk, for me it's more of a haven where I can feel at home, converse with friends and hear great music all in the same spot.. If you are a little off the 'norm', you'll be welcome here. If the bar lot is full, there is additional parking across the street, sssshhhh! Well, it's my favorite bar. I debated giving it one star to keep tourists away, but if they go out of business I'll have no where to stare wistfully into space while I melt my brain, so here we are. I'm hesitant to call it a dive bar--it's not exclusively occupied by middle-aged folks bereft of hopes amd dreams, and feels lively and rambunctious before closing time--but college students would call it a dive bar. The tenders bar are far from surly, serving regulars regularly, be they peculiar, titular, or jocular party foulers, yo. The bar is dank, dark, loud, and air conditioned with pool and pinball. So, perfect. They usually play metal or punk rock (read: WuTang.) The daddio patio is spacious, relaxing, and there's a sweet swing seat that you have to share with Mike but he's a chill dude and pretty skinny, so there's room. After gathering with some new friends for a Mardi Gras / Blog Anniversary party there recently, I can safely say I absolutely adore the Scurvy Dog. Coming from Chicago, I appreciate a good dive bar - especially if it has good drink prices. Once a dive bar fully embraces its divey-ness, it usually becomes intolerable. (Not this bar though.) Though we arrived there late on a random Tuesday evening, the bar seemed to be hopping with a great mix of gay, straight and everything in between. Different groups that didn't arrive together began mingling, drinks flowed freely, and the music wasn't so loud that screaming conversation had to occur. All in all, I'd say we'll definitely be back here for repeat visits. read more

We got here around 10 or so, making entering a quiet affair. I had never realized that that small, grey box of a building was a bar, but once I heard that mysterious information, the anticipation of finding this place was excitement itself. Upon driving, (parking was easy!) and entering (we came in the back way) I was there. The eclectic atmosphere reminded me of Harley-Davidson and Día de Muertos at the same time. The alcohol list was varied and impressive. I myself, (being poor and such) ordered the cheapest drink on the menu and it was 1. something I had never head of and 2. really tasty! My take? This place is a fun place to see and hang with those who have similar tastes and an alcohol menu that satisfies. **Bonus Points*** The Taco Truck stops there around 11:30. read more

At the top of the pothole mountain that is the Olneyville Square exit ramp in a small unassuming black box is the Phenix known as the Scurvy Dog. Risen from the ashes of a crack house disguised as bar, this is the type of place I would like to own if I ever had the money to open a bar. It may not be the type of dive that is all things to all people (perhaps Chris R. misses the Green Bar), but its not some kind of "scene bar" if you know what I'm saying. Anybody can walk in here, grab a drink, and enjoy. I like this bar because they always have 4 or 5 good, craft, draft beers available all the time. Look on the blackboard and you'll find something tasty. Last time I drank Dale's Pale Ale which is not often seen on draft. And yes, PBR for the hipsters and good old 'Gansett to keep it cheap AND local. (Order a 'Gansett for God sakes and lets get a brewery back up and running in Rhode Island!) But if you want to get freaky and order some artsy martini your friend on the East Side told you was good, these guys will bust it out for you. The bartenders are laid back, they know their stuff, and they're also the business owners. They've got a great bar here, they're making a nice profit, and the Occupy Providence crew will still show up and drink with them. That's how f~&king cool these guys really are. A frind of mine brought me to this bar after seeing a concert, and I was already pretty drunk when we got here. After a drink and some pinball (in which the machine told me to stay off drugs!!!!), I was bought a huge shot from a random girl we didn't know since it had just become my birthday. Pretty rad. Much like the E&O, this is not a "dive bar", it's a dive-themed hipster bar. Its the type of place that people who say they "love dive bars" like to go - filled with other attractive 20/30something tatooed white people who are all part of the same social scene. These people never hang out at Gilligans, the City Line Pub, or The Acores Cafe. That's not to knock the Scurvy Dog. Much like the E&O, I like the place. What sets the Scurvy Dog apart is its music and hours. The music, as many have noted, is a lot of metal and punk - mostly from the 80s and early 90s. It tends to be the stuff that is going to be remembered as "classics" and recognized by folks who have at least a cursory knowledge of that type of music. It stays away from the truly obscure underground music as well as the MTV pop nonsense that was never really part of that music scene. So you won't hear AUS ROTTEN and BROTHER INFERIOR in this punk bar, but you also won't hear BLINK 182 and Avril Levigne. The hours of the bar are it's other big selling point. As one on the few hipster bars in the area open past midnight (the other option being Lili Marlene's on Atwells) it draws a good crowd from E&O, Avery, and Julians later in the evening. The easy availability of parking, and location close to the Armory district where many of it's clientele live make it a great destination as the last stop on a West End/Federal Hill bar crawl. The fact that there's usually a food truck in the parking lot when you're drunk and craving something hot and greasy is just icing on the cake. read more
