Or when I'm driving to the Poncey-Highlands for drinks. So basically, I still you see everyday. I appreciate the effort, Hill Street Beauty Spot if not the lack of creativity in naming you. Well, I guess they were really kind of limited in choices. "Hill Street." Ok, that makes sense. "Beauty Spot." Well, that's about the outer edge of superlatives that end of Hill Street can bear. I doubt many would accept "Hill Street's Location of Stupendous Pulchritude" nor would they swallow "Hill Street's Median of the Becoming" though, knowing how streetwalkers used to lounge in this area, if someone would be coming here, undoubtedly much swallowing would follow. So we're stuck with the Hill Street Beauty Spot, an area of median on Hill Street gussied up with plants and flowers and other assorted landscaping tricks. Oh and a huge wooden sign that declares in no uncertain terms "Hill Street Beauty Spot." Well okay then. In fact, since the city demolished the last of the projects nearby on Memorial, they've terraformed the remaining parcels into a land of rocks and mulch. Not much in the way of a park, but it beats the Squatters Sheraton/Hobo Hotel that was there. So, Hill Street Beauty Spot, you get an A for Effort and a C for Execution. Let's just average that out to 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

It's that place where the homeless stand and talk and that guy on the hoveround likes to "drive" out in front of me as I'm coming home from work. Then on the opposing corner is another gaggle of homeless sitting on the stone by the church. I'm not exactly sure why they mulched it all up, but it looks pretty great when driving down Memorial. Much better than it used to look, that's for sure. And you'd get a 5th star if that damn hoveround weren't always gunning for my car.

This new Saturday morning only green market in the parking lot of the Horseradish Grill…read more(intersection of Wieuca and Powers Ferry in Chastain Park) is a small neighborhood market of maybe 25 stalls with a fair selection of bakers, one great meat purveyor offering tastes and selling amazing pork sausage and bacon and just a few produce vendors. If you live right nearby or you are walking the loop at Chastain Park with your dog, it may be worthwhile to stop in and pick up a little nibble for breakfast or a treat for later from the charming couple at the back of the market with awesome ginger cookies, but it is not a large enough market (and it has no cheese purveyors!) to go out of your way to visit, at least not yet! I've been invited to the Liberty Park Chili Cook Off by my friend and coworker Ryan J. since the…read moreevent's first year (2008). However, I did not make it out to my first one until this past Saturday, the 4th annual edition and apparently biggest one yet. I was told for the first two years, the cook off was held at the organizers' home in Liberty Park, a townhome community in Westside Atlanta. The last two years, it's been held at Red Brick Brewing Company (formerly ABC) just around the corner. Nearly 200 people attended this year's cook off. Admission to the event cost $20, which was good for one beer glass of unlimited Red Brick beer and tastings of the 25+ chilis until supplies lasted. Proceeds above the cost of hosting the event went to the National MS Society. I decided to attend the chili cook off the week of and was pleasantly surprised to find out that my friend Jimmy M. (Angela M's husband) was entering his own chili into the contest for the first time. Even more reason for me to go. Each chili could win any of three awards: (1) Best Unusual, (2) Spiciest, and (3) Best Overall. Ryan won the spiciest category for the 4th year in a row. The reigning spicy champ has brought his leftover chili into the office in years past and burned the mouths of many. This year, his version was dubbed "Fire in the Hole" and made generous use of dried and fresh habaneros. I ate an entire small bowlful of it and was out of chili-tasting-commission for a good 10-15 minutes. I must admit, it did make me tear it up little. Ryan won by a landslide. If there was an award for best presentation, he would've won that too since his chili was surrounded by a plethora of dried peppers. The winner for "Best Unusual" was the "Pho Chili" based on the popular Vietnamese beef noodle soup. I think most everyone, including myself, voted for this one. It was the only chili on the floor that was not self-serve. You handed your bowl to the makers (one of which was wearing a totally awesome bright red Sriracha t-shirt) and they would add the ingredients in the following order: (1) chili meat, (2) pho broth, (3) vegetables. I smelled the broth before I ate any of the chili and it was hot and fragrant, just like an actual bowl of pho! How unique and original. "Three Guys, One Brisket" won best overall chili. One of my former coworkers, Megan P, was telling me how good this chili was and how she "helped" make it by watching and drinking beer. It was undoubtedly the sweetest tasting chili of the bunch. I liked it. The sauce reminded me most of traditional sweet Georgia BBQ sauces. Jimmy M's (and cooking partner Mark's) chili was similar to a Mexican mole sauce. Their chili was unique in that it made use of chocolate as a key ingredient. I thought it was the runniest of all the chilis, but still tasty and good enough to place 3rd for best overall chili. A good showing since it was their first time. Other chilis I enjoyed were Josh H's jerk chicken chili and Jimmy S's pork green chili. Jimmy S. is one of the organizers of the event and you can read his take on it on his blog, "Eat It, Atlanta" (http://www.eatitatlanta.com/2011/02/06/chili-cook-off-2011/). Overall, I had a good time. Parking was plentiful outside and since we were in Red Brick's warehouse/brewery, there was plenty of space inside (although some of the stations did get a little crowded). The City of Duluth has a fair share of restaurants in the area. A decade ago, I came to the city of Duluth for a friend's wedding. She had her wedding outdoors at the city of Duluth. No kidding. It was gorgeous! Since then, I've come every now and then for Food Truck Friday's and other events held there. It is a cute little park with lots of free parking everywhere! There's a water fountain with colorful lights. Kids could wear their bathing suits and just have fun. Some statues are for display with what the park has done for the community. A few restaurants nearby are Noona Steakhouse & Oyster Bar, Dreamland BBQ, Four Forks, PURE Taqueria, O4W Pizza, and more. It's a cute little town with colorful bike statues for take photos. Plus I saw pretty artwork on one of the walls but didn't take a picture. 55/2018

I prefer Joan's Creek to John's Crack, but John will have to do…read more John's Creek is an absolutely beautiful suburb of leafy Atlanta Georgia which is way way north of the town - in fact so far north that you can drive for quite a long time especially in traffic and still not get here. There are some cool ethnic places - sort of a spillover from Chinatown - and some cool local places as well. I like the suburb and it seems like a very friendly if slightly expensive place to live. I'm sure that within another 20 years there will be 7 or 8 suburbs even further out than these. There's a large Asian population here, and nearly 100,000 people if you include all the illegals in the spare rooms. That's a joke by the way. And I used to live in a spare room meant for illegals so settle down.

Kinda upset that Yelp is calling is John's Creek instead of Johns Creek (yes - people in JC do get…read moreoffended), but it's all good. I lived in JC from 2006 ~ 2015; a whopping nine years of my life and pretty much all of my teenage years. It was a brand new city when I moved here, and I honestly want to give this place 5 stars, but I simply can't for a few reasons. If you're living here as a teenager with parents and going to school, it's a great pace to live -- it's a safe and pretty high-class area, with great schools and little to no crime. Once you're in your twenties, you'll start to notice the downfalls here -- pretty much no night life, horrendous traffic and it's really the farthest place you can be from any highway. You have to drive either to Duluth, Alpharetta or Cumming to get to the nearest exit which is pretty sad, but that's why it has its own charms. Johns Creek is one of the safest cities and honestly one of the best cities you can live in Georgia. It has great school districts, plenty of diversity, great eateries and the people living here are really great! Lots of cultures in one melted pot, and any family will want to move here because of the terrific school districts. In terms of recreation, there really isn't much to do - there is a Lifetime Fitness, LA Fitness but no bowling allies -- there are a few parks (Shakerag Park), but nothing is like really great. In terms of schools, I went to Wilson Creek Elementary, River Trail Middle & Northview High. There are also Shakerag Elementary, Medlock Bridge Elementary, Findley Oaks Elementary, Johns Creek High School, but it's really just a district for higher middle-class families to live. Homes are expensive here for a reason -- there is a high percentage of Asians living here for education. With that being said, there is a Hmart and some Korean & Chinese restaurants in the area as well - the Korean community has been growing more than ever. I will say the only thing disappointing is you can't see anything much opening past 10pm. Again -- there is no night life here - you will have to drive to Duluth or Alpharetta to experience that. But my nine years in JC have been absolutely phenomenal, and again I was really tempted to give it that 5, but I can't because imagining myself living here as a 25 year old -- I'm not sure how I would feel about that.

This years Great Atlanta Beerfest at Turner Field was simply marvelous! I like to attend events…read moreearly for several reasons: good parking, time to network and of course first dibs on food. Unfortunately this is the last Beerfest to be held at Turner Field as the Atlanta Braves have a new home. With that being said they decided to celebrate this festival unlike any previous ones. This year we would party hard on the field! Wow. I have never actually been on the field before. The view was breathtaking. I received a blue commemorative cup and a listing of over 150+ breweries alongside with their location on the field. The big screen had college football on so everyone was at ease. The entire field was jam packed wall to wall. I cannot recall when I last saw so many people on the field. So many people but I had nothing but time. There was no possible way I was going to sample all 150+ beers and wines. Nor was I going to try. A few did catch my eye and I was most delighted. ABK had a beer/lemonade combination in which they called Rose. I was intrigued by the concept and decided to sample it. It was a light beer that was not overly sweet. I enjoyed it so much. It did have a rose-like flavor but did not have an overbearing taste. I savored every drop.  My next pick was a fruit ale by Jekyll Brewing titled Strawberry Bomb. And it was bursting with flavor. It was a light ale that encompassed a strawberry punch. This was a drink that made me appreciate them as an ale. Loved it!   The last but not least pick came from Monday Night and was named Drafty Cinnamon. This cinnamon scotch ale was a candy lover's dream. The taste was reminiscent of a cinnamon schnapps but very mellow. This one took the cake and stuck with me the rest of my time there. The food was sensational! Some of the food vendors included The Fry Guy, Tom & Chee and my new fave Roti Rolls. I got a veggie rice bowl that was a beautiful melody in my mouth. So much flavor! I love when eateries use fresh ingredients. It really does make a difference.    The Geeks entertained us with cover classics. I heard them cover Green Day, Cee Lo, Beastie Boys and countless others. Their energy was electric and they gave a stellar performance throughout the event. This years event was an astronomical success. There was literally something for everyone. If you weren't a big drinker but wanted to try drinks out of your comfort zone, you could. And if you were a seasoned drinker, you knew exactly what questions to ask. Despite all the negativity in the world, every person that I saw at Turner Field was having a great day.

I have attended events from this specific organizer in the past and they were all pretty decent…read more The last one was in Old Fourth Ward and was a lot of fun. This year..... was A MESS!!! I don't know what went wrong. Did they sell too many tickets? Did they not staff well enough? Who knows. The festival started at 1pm. Our group arrived around 1:20pm. We had to go to Will Call first to pick up tickets and were then directed to the line. Let's just say we had to walk 10 minutes to get just to the end of the line. So, our official wait started around 1:45pm. We finally entered the stadium at 3:55pm. That was a 2 HOUR 10 MINUTE wait. If I hadn't already paid $40 (plus the ridiculous $8+ for Ticketmaster), I was in it for nearly $50. Otherwise, I would have left after waiting and not moving for 30 minutes in the sun without anything to drink.... or a bathroom. When we finally made it inside, everyone was already irritated. Plus, then you stand in line AGAIN to get beers. To top it off, most of the beer was sub-par. it's a sad day, when the best beer served is Fat Tire, which I could've bought at any grocery store and then sat somewhere comfortable to drink. By the time I left, I had a total of 4 tastes of beer. $12.50 per taste. I will never attend another of their events again, sorry!
