With her Tesla parked at the hotel, and both of us still a bit tipsy from our continuing on/off drinking, my friend and I decided to take a Muni 1 bus. My phone was dead so I couldn't call an Uber and she thought it would be fun to ride the bus again (I never stopped), so off we went to the nearby bus stop and I used my two clipper cards to pay for us ($2.50 each) and yes, I was prepared. Once boarded, we enjoyed a fairly crowded rush hour ride, cruising through Financial District, Chinatown, Nob Hill, and then the crowd eased as we went up Pac Height, further and further we went until we reached near my place. We got off, walked a bit and got in to see my little pup just finishing his din din and jumping up and down eager to see us. And my hubby was just as surprised since he thought I would be coming home until much later. Not that anybody will read this and care enough to try being better. The drivers constantly lay on their loud bus horns- every time they approach Clay/Mason LOUD aggressive honking for no reason. Seriously does it not occur to anybody the apartment buildings and condos are full of people paying a lot for a little chill spot- instead baby's woke from naps, meetings interrupted, and just a generally high level of noise pollution Lots of Muni drivers blast that horn all day for nothing worthy- they are just obnoxious and angry at everybody. Recently moved to SF and take the muni to and from work. Love the system of having these trains but some of the drivers are complete assholes. My stop that I get on after work is a stop when the drivers will switch shifts so the bus will be off. This has happened a number of times where some of the drivers will leave the doors open so passengers can get on which is very nice but other times, the drivers will keep the doors shut, turn on the bus and drive away... like wtf. Pay nearly $100 a month just to wait 40 minutes for a bus. might as well run home. read more

Reba McEntire Growing up in SF, the "1" was, and still is, the main bus-line to take you from the Embarcadero to the Outer Richmond/Seacliff and back. I do recommend it to people, from time to time, because of the straight line the route takes through the City. You even have the "A" and "B" Express lines during rush hour to get you to work or home faster. Still, I tell everyone, ride it at your own risk and bring lots of sanitizing wipes to clean your seats and handrails! So, why only 2 stars? The DRIVERS! In all fairness, most of them are great. Unfortunately some of them are not, in a freaking DANGEROUS way. When they are running late they have no problemo charging red lights or cutting drivers off in order to make their time checks. You seriously have to look both ways and wait several seconds on California Street at stop signs or when the light turns green before, either walking or driving across, since there might be a late running "1 Californiazilla" on the damn warpath, charging down the bloody road! I will NEVER, EVER forget the day, about a decade ago, when I was jogging along California street and a speeding 1 California bus collided with a large fire engine that had its sirens on in front of my eyes...GEEZ!!! read more

The SF MUNI is a Stellar example of just how bad public transportation can get. Absolutely hit or miss schedules, particularly for the muni trains, no matter the hour. I take the muni 6 days a week to and from work and I can almost guarantee that I'll be late one way or another. Trains more often than not come stacked one after another because one of them is always late. Some trains are out right "out of service" when it comes around. I've ended up catching uber/lift on many occasions when MUNI was especially ridiculous. Be sure to hop on the 3rd or 4th one before your original planned trip. You WILL BE late! read more

This line has to be the most popular line of MUNI because without fail EVERY time I decide to use it, it is packed to the rafters with bodies trying desperately not to touch eachother but unavoidably doing so as our driver lurches around corners like he is Keanu Reeves in Speed "SF style". I like it because it gets me from point A to point B without too much drama. Meaning from my little hood in Pac Heights on Fillmore to downtown in 15 minutes flat. But the herd of little Asian grandmothers going to Chinatown perplex me because I swear they must go shopping every day every hour. WHERE do they go? WHERE do they come from? Took this bus a few days ago and I must say it ain't bad. Sure this bus goes by Chinatown but it is not so rowdy like the number 30 which totally sucks. It makes me mad when a bus gets really crowded. Best time to ride is when this hidden shuttle that goes by Chinatown is in service. I had to take this bus back to where I work and service is quick and easy. All you do is pay and go till you transfer to another bus. I still love the fact that it goes down streets that you rarely go down if you are not a native to SF. I do agree on this route being very "precious" like a luxury car which also #33 is also the same. Drawback: the frequency of this bus can throw people off so try your best to find this bus if you use it for your commute, if you miss it the worse case scenario is waiting 20+ minutes read more

This is my least favorite bus line in all of SF. If you want to ride a bus on a rainy day that decides with no warning to stop at Presidio and force everyone to get off, this is the line for your. If you're in a hurry and need to get somewhere on time, but also want to spend 7 minutes parked at Presidio while the driver jokes around with his bus driver friends while switching shifts, this is the bus for you. I can remember the day I decided I would no longer be taking the 1 as my main means of transit to and from work. I was standing at Clay and Hyde at about 8:00 a.m. one day, when the 1 pulled up, packed to the gills. Both doors opened, no one came out (because, seriously, who's getting out there at that time of day?). The small Chinese woman who had been standing next to me waiting walked up the the rear door---or rather, she walked until she was lined up with the rear door, but still about 3 steps away from it. Then, she took 3 quick steps and rammed into the pile of bodies. I lost sight of her for a second, but then she fell backwards out of the door, caught herself with an outstretched leg, stood on the sidewalk for 2 second, gathered herself, and vaulted into the bus again. A split-second after she vaulted, the rear door slammed closed and the bus went back on its merry way. Paraphrasing Danny Glover in my head, I said to myself "I am WAY too rural for this shit." By which I meant that I would have objected to traveling to work with a Chinese woman wedged in my colon. Or any other nationality of woman. Or any man. Or a tranny, pre- or post-op. For clarity's sake, let's just say this: Ben no want no one wedged in colon. Ergo, Ben no fit in on 1. So, I started commuting via cable car. The same monthly Muni pass covers cable cars. Here's what I found: A. I didn't overheat, because I could chose to be outside or inside, and could switch at will; B. The trip was just about the same duration, maybe 3 minutes longer; C. At least in the morning, the cable cars run on a more reliable schedule; and D. I no longer arrived at work in a homicidal mindset. So, no more 1 for me, thanks. I've had enough. read more

One day my former employer cheaped-out and made me take the bus to a meeting. I was mystified. They would spend what amounted to a bit more than cab fare on lunch, but then make me take a bus. Yeah, that's right, FORMER employer. I'm not bitter. : P It was my first ride on MUNI in 24 years. My previous experience on MUNI involved being an innocent young thing from the suburbs Back East who lied to her parents about traveling to be in a friends' wedding but instead came out to SF for a week to visit the recently-initiated luv-of-her-life. So as you can imagine, it wasn't my memory of a single ride on 'Joe Muni' that stuck in my impressionable cranium from that first West Coast trip that ultimately changed the course of my life. BTW, this month marks the 25th Anniversary of our first sorta-date. Yes, it's true: I'm damned old. Enough with the trivia. So here I was, decades later, face to face with the lovely 1 California. St. Hubbins had reassured me this route was pretty low-key, so I shouldn't have any issues to deal with. Right. I think it's fair to say a couple of things might have changed around here since the early '80's... I boarded the parked bus at the beginning of the route. Immediately following the first stop, a truck on Main Street nearly cut us off. Our illustrious driver felt compelled to answer that by speeding up so he could stop the bus at an angle across two lanes in the middle of the street. Reciprocity, Baby! He then jumped out and started a shouting match with the truck driver. Apparently extensive use of the word 'fxxk' is considered essential to getting the point across. I have to agree. In my experience, 'fxxk' IS the most appropriate term to employ after getting cut off. At this point, I couldn't actually see anything from where I was sitting, but I could hear lots of banging around at the back of the bus. I do not condone violence, though I couldn't help but wear a sinister smile. After all, I seriously hate getting cut off--how many times have I wanted to do precisely what was now playing out in the street? Not to mention the fact that I was still in a mood over having to take the bus in the first place. Hmm. Was someone getting his ass kicked? While that will remain a mystery, it was not long before the driver climbed back onto the bus, and without a word, sped through his route, complete with the too-fast turns mentioned in other reviews. Eventually, I arrived in Laurel Heights none the worse for wear, with plenty of time to make the meeting and quite ready to mix it up with anyone who crossed my path. Oh yeah! read more

Aggghhhh! I live right on the 1 California line - like RIGHT on the 1 California line, so it's the most expedient method for me to cross the city... but... AAAAGGGHHHHH! On weekdays the outbound service is fairly consistent - there are tons of buses going up the hill at rush-hour time, one every five minutes. While this is good, this rarely affects me, as I live in Chinatown and unless the weather is complete crap, I walk home from the FiDi every night following work. On weekends the outbound services is alright - but, the bus is SUPER crowded with tourists who don't understand the concept behind moving back so more people can get on the bus and/or stand in the fucking doorways so that you cannot board or get off said bus. Inbound? It's fucking hell. Pure and simple. HELL people. Unless I want to deal with walking over Nob Hill w/laundry and/or groceries -- or, unless I want to deal with the far more crowded #rs 30 or 45 to go down to SoMa for grocery needs, I have to take the 1 Cali to Whole Foods in Lower Pac Heights. Getting there is NEVER the problem - the problem lies in getting back. The inbound bus to Chinatown is *always packed* with *rude people* (most of whom I hope are tourists, as it would make me cry to think that my fellow San Franciscans are such assholes) who will not get out of your way or make space for you to either stand or set down your parcels... who shove you and push you out of the way to get a seat. What the hell people? What is it about boarding a Muni bus which turns you guys into such assholes? Seriously - try a little kindness towards your fellow Muni riders - make the world a little nicer, a little more civil... come on, people - I know your parents didn't raise you to be idiots who shove and push and are rude to total strangers!!! Here's another thing: Get your tourist ass OUT of the SEAT and let the 90 yo lady w/the two big bags of groceries and a cane SIT... get your tourist ass OUT of the SEAT and let the mother with three small children SIT DOWN so her children have someplace to sit and don't go flying about the bus... they are KIDS. You? You can reach the friggin' strap so as to stand and be fairly secure... them? Not so much. It KILLS me when I see jerkoff guys and their hipster girlfriends from Iowa or where ever they happen to come from - trying their best to be the SNL "couple of assholes" sitting in the front of the bus when little kids and old ladies are flung about the bus like pins in a bowling alley... really, people, REALLY! And, let's not get started on the Muni drivers on the 1 California line... !!! 1 California drivers (with the exception of three or four who rock) I have four words for you: LAY.OFF.THE.BRAKE Agggghhhh!!! After dark, don't try to take the 1 California from the outer Richmond to 6th Ave so that you can meet friends at 540 Club unless you want to wait half an hour before calling someone who cares enough about you to come and get you to come and get you. When he/she agrees to come and get you, the 1 California will magically appear, seemingly out of nowhere, but you'll be stuck waiting for your ride because you could have sworn the 1 California was never going to come. Luckily, it's only a short drive for your man/woman but in the time it takes for them to get to you, a big scary man may pull his SUV over on the dark street and get out and approach you, grab your shoulder, and try to convince you to get in his car with him. That is when you realize the 38 would have been a better idea and you swear up and down that next time you will wear 3" heels instead of 4" heels so that you CAN walk to Geary instead of waiting in the pitch black of California Street, like a sitting duck, for a bus that is never coming. During the day service is swift and regular but near downtown it starts smelling like all kinds of ethnic food in there and it's wall-to-wall rude people who do things like burp in your face and push you out of their way. I hate MUNI - everyone does. And everyone has the same complaints BUT I do love this line, here's why: 1) It is SO close to my house 2) It takes me to: - the ferry building - Chinatown area: which would be how I get to North Beach - My sisters old house - Polk Street - My eyebrow threader - Laurel Heights - Solstice - G bar - Fillmore St - My dentist 3) It is usually not too packed 4) Fewer crazies than the parallel 38 - that said, the BRAND of crazy on this line is often an older woman. And in my mind they tend to be OFF the rocker crazy. For example, the woman who repeatedly told Ali R and I to move to the back as the front was saved for seniors ---- when the bus was EMPTY and we were the only 3 on it. read more

Here are the top seven reasons I loathe each and every time I am forced to ride the MUNI 1 California. I know I could easily come up with an even ten, but these just seem to be the issues that have truly pissed me off over the past few days...please enjoy. 1. I leave my house every morning at 8:30am. Half the time the Muni arrives a few minutes later and I end up 15 minutes early for work, grumpy that those precious minutes could have been spent in bed. The other half of the time, I watch helplessly as back to back buses, filled way beyond capacity, drive right by me unable to pick up any more passengers, and I end up ten minutes late for work. Can they space out the buses more so this doesn't happen?? 2. I am forced to ride a total of three blocks through China town on the normal commute... At the first stop entering this part of town, somewhere around 35 elderly Chinese people shove their way onto the bus, I politely offer up my seat, which one of them always takes...and then I proceed to watch as every single one of them de-board the bus two blocks later. 3. Hoodlums like to ride this route during rush hour. Yes...hoodlums. I was recently on my ride home around 6:15 and witnessed a young lady get her IPhone stolen right out of her hand while she was texting. We all stared in disbelief as a guy grabbed it from her hands and sprinted out the open door during one of the stops. What did the bus driver do as we all yelled and a gentleman tried to chase the thief? Closed the doors and drove onward. 4. It takes twenty minutes to literally go 6 blocks sometimes. 5. When it rains, forget about these buses actually running on schedule...or at all. During a recent down pour I actually had to catch a taxi home because predicted bus times were listed as more than 45 minutes. How can this be when on a normal day they come every 3 minutes?? 6. Is it me or did they select the grumpiest, most foul-mouthed a-hole drivers for this particular route? 7. The evening commute on the 1 is essentially a death trap. Tonight, on my way home from the gym around 7:30pm, the driver packed the bus so tight with people he may have even had someone sitting on his lap. As we began to make the trek up the very steep hill at Sacramento and Grant, the electricity just gave out and we sharply shot backwards as the driver slammed on the breaks. We were about 2 seconds away from flying backwards into the Kearny Street traffic and meeting a really unfortunate death. Seriously people, the yellow line is no joke. Stay behind it!! If the bus is full, that sucks....wait for the next one, do not shove and push all the rest of the riders farther into this moving metal coffin. Each morning I walk into my office after my horrific commute and mutter to my co-workers "Never agaiin. I'm never riding the 1 again." I have decided walking to work is not only a good healthy alternative but saves my sanity as well. As for the steep uphill trek home each night? When rating Muni lines, my first consideration is the geographic layout of the line itself and whether the line is useful as designed. My second consideration has to do with other, real-world factors such as how dangerous it is to ride the line, how crowded it is, etc. The 1-California is a fairly straight line that has always gotten me where I needed to go. I would give it a five on that count. I've never needed it west of 33rd Avenue, but if I did, I'd probably complain because transferring to the 38-Geary at that point would be annoying. I have been on crowded 1's before. That's kinda part of taking Muni in this city. For as important a line as it is, though, the 1 isn't *that* crowded. Those people who complain about it should ride the 38, 22, or 24 during rush hour sometime. And I've never felt unsafe on a crowded 1, which is a lot more than I can say for the 9 or 14. I, being the odd sort, like the 38 Geary... it gets you where you need to go... it doesn't cost that much and it's around the clock... But if you're heading from the Inner Richmond to the downtown area, may I suggest the 1 California? It's like the younger, cleaner version to its grimy, "shut the hell up, we'll get you there" cousin. Marvel... as the electric-powered vehicle comes to a quiet stop. You step up, only to be greeted by the smiling driver, who doffs his stove-pipe hat, extends his white-gloved hand and offers you a complimentary toffee. You deposit your two-bits into the coin machine and smell the air. What is that? The smell of urine-less air? How charming! The driver carefully places his top hat back on his head and then grips the wheel as he wishes you a "Jolly good morning, Sir!" As you stroll down the aisle... not a care in the world... the driver hits the accelerator and you're thrown twenty-eight feet, face first, into the rear window. read more

I have a somewhat-love mostly-hate relationship with the 1 California. The two positives are that it's extremely close to my apt. and somewhat close to my work, and that there are usually a good number of them running throughout the day. The huge negatives are that this bus is usually jam packed. It almost always smells weird. It is the most violent/jarring muni ride in town. The Asian people shove and/or step on you as they get on and off the bus at the Stockton St. stop. None of the reviewers are lying when they say the bus is nearly empty once you pass Stockton and Grant. And believe me, you want to be nowhere near those doors when it approaches Stockton. It's a veritable flood, and you're spun around so many times you can't gather your bearings, and you're practically swept away with the tide of Asians exiting, hanging onto bars, seats, or whatever is stationary just to stay on the bus, nobody hears or understands your pleas, and oh why oh why did I ever get on this bus in the first place! PROS: -I have thighs of steel due to shifting my weight back and forth while standing, and hanging on to the beams through all of those hills! -they run frequently -they take me practically to my work's front door -they get you wherever you need to go pretty fast CONS: -they run frequently but I rarely ever get to board the first bus I see, more like the 2nd or 3rd -they are filled to the brim. if I could hang from the ceiling of the bus on the way to work I would. TRUST ME! it beats standing with your face pressed against the bus's windshield! -you better pray you get a driver that only opens the front door at stops (when doing a pick up), because if you're anywhere near Chinatown watch out. Oh, and I'm really tired of getting mowed down by women holding pink plastic bags, who are half my height, and 3 times my age. It's not fun in the least. P.S. You've been warned. P.P.S. Some idiot Muni driver on the outbound MUNI-1 line along California Street has this routine where he/she/IT takes up two effin' lanes for miles along California Street deep into the Laurel Heights district. Is he/she/IT trying to avoid a double-parked vehicle? No. Is he/she/IT defensively maneuvering this bus to not hit a bike/pedestrian? No. I see this constantly near the CPMC-Children's Hospital area. It's a crazy sight as you are driving behind it. Not a single soul can pass this bus. I'm assuming that he/she/IT lacks the skills, or is scared of shaving off the side-view mirrors of the parked cars. He/she/IT does pull into one lane to let off the passengers. how nice...not epic...lotsa fail. read more

I've come to terms with the fact that I am just a weirdo magnet. Normally the 1-California is my top choice for bussing it downtown (or just anywhere out of Fog Central.. I mean the Outer Richmond). The 38 is sketch, the 38-L only runs at limited times (hah, that's why they call it the L?), and the 2 is hindered by the hordes of Chinese people who cross the street at inappropriate times on Clement Street. The 1 is usually pretty clean and good about running on time. I've been yelled at twice by bus drivers, just because I asked them politely what time they were leaving (I used to live right where it started, so I'd head outside my apartment and hop on the bus because the drivers opened the door a few minutes prior to leaving). Half star off. I also wish this bus ran more often, instead of every 20 minutes in non-peak hours (as opposed to the 38-sketch, which goes more frequently, even around 10 pm). Oh, the many times I prayed for the "Next Muni" website to have a fluke and really have the arrival time of only 3 minutes, instead of 14 as shown). Another half star off. The last star off is for the one time I almost died. I'd managed to miss the express lines because my Bart ran late, so I took the regular 1 back home and managed to snag a seat. Score. However, I was overcome by an incredibly strong, powerful stench. Really. Bad. Body. Odor. For about 20 minutes, I tried not to hurl. I pressed my face against the side panel, I counted sheep in my head, I tried to breathe through my mouth. However, the smell was relentless, and I had no idea where it was coming from. The bus was packed (why isn't this bus longer, by the way?), and I had a sneaking suspicion that the stench was from the man seated next to me. After the bus shifted and people got off the bus, I turned my face towards the back of the bus to see if the odor had cleared. As it turned out, I was right; the man next to me was the culprit. As I turned around, he turned as well to look me in the eye and burp into my face. One star off. read more

Is it just me or does there always seem to be some bat shit crazy driver on this bus? This driver is not only the "back door nazi" (heh, back door...) but they will stomp on the gas throwing people around and then hit the break so hard that everyone goes flying forward. I seriously thought that someone was going to break their neck one day. Get your ass on the bus and grab a seat or hold on to whatever you can would be my recommendation... assuming you don't have a death wish. The cable car drivers on the California line can be obnoxious too but I tend to take that rather than the 1 california. I'd rather chance having a car crash in to the side of it than be killed by the bus driver. read more

Awesome! Because the driver actually stopped and waited after he proceeded to pull off. It was only a second or two. We all know the drivers have a huge rep. of being complete jerks. This driver saw that I ran up to the bus and actually opened the doors. This kind of thing NEVER happens w/ Muni drivers. Usually they pull off after the doors shut. If the light is red I've seen them sit there until the light changes and then takes off while people are banging on the doors. If the driver who waited for me to board in front of the Gap/EMC #3 about 1:00ish reads this, I just want to say THANKS! You're awesome. Wish there were more like you. Wish I had gotten his bus no. This bus line is on time about 90% of the time. Hardly packed unlike the 38 Geary bus. The buses are clean and free of misspelled graffiti tags When its cold out the drivers actually throw on the heater. I'm not going to lie, I never knew that the buses had heaters until I started riding the 1 California. read more

Took this last night after having dinner up the street on Montgomery. It was about 8:45p and I has just missed the previous bus by half a block! Luckily the next bus was due to arrive in about 6 mins. Thank you 1 California for not making me wait 20 mins for the next bus since it's no longer commute hours! I easily found a seat and took the line all way to the end. Fast and painless. I was the last one off the bus! Now if only I could have convinced the bus driver to drop me off on Fulton instead! Actually the only time I ride the 1 California is from Embarcadero Shopping Center to Van Ness and back. It's great that Embarcadero Shopping Center is the first/last stop, which enables me to usually get a seat. Once the bus goes down Nob Hill, it's like a fast roller coaster ride to Van Ness and I can get to my destination on time. read more

As far as public transportation goes, the 1 is a pretty decent bus line. Granted, by definition most all public transportation is pretty crappy simlpy for being what it is, publci transportation (this isn't a knock against MUNI, they do a fine job, but public transportation in any situation ends up being a little less than ideal due to an assortment of factors.) Like any bus, it is very crowded at rush hour. it also has it's number of rude and inconsiderate passengers. The number of homeless, crazy people and adolsecents on this bus is much lower than on any other I have exeperienced. That can be a plus or minus depending on what you are going for. In my expereince, the 1 has always been prompt, and during rush hour if I miss one there si usually another only 3 block behind. It's the easiest and most convenient way to get from work to home, and the best line for my money. I just wish some of the drivers would realize the gas and break pedals still work without pushing them all the way to the floor. read more

Man, this bus is GREAT for eye candy. You get men going to and coming from the FiDi....almost ALWAYS certain of a great gig at some financial institution. Okay..so they look great in a suit...*drool* Wait..am I reviewing the 1 or the men who ride the 1? Anyways..onto the Muni... For 1, this bus makes WAY too many stops. Jeezus...every 100 feet it seems. Is that REALLY necessary? For 2, you DEFINITELY know when it's going thru Chinatown! For 3, grab yourself a seat, cuz this is no comfy bus ride...probably the most harrowing I've been on since I've been in the city! *Well,...ignore 3 if you can strategically fall into the lap of some hottie CEO dude that you must apologize for over and over and only make it up to him by taking him out for a drink!* ;) Hahaha..... Yay for hotties in suits and a 30 degree incline slope and lots of bumps and jolts!!! Not good for days that you are A) Hungover or B) Feeling Nauseous! read more

Great. Usually clean & reliable, it goes from one end of the city to the other. Three stars off for the driver who, in an attempt to squeeze by me waiting for a parking space, ever-so-slowly plowed into my car and as I was screaming for her to stop, took off to her next stop. After running as fast as I could for a more than a block to catch her and tell her she hit my car, she rolled her eyes and then told me to settle down. Lady, I don't know if you really didn't know you hit me, or you were just pretending not to (I'll give you the benefit of the doubt), but the next time you have a huge metal behemoth just sort of easing into the side of your vehicle & then take off, I want to see how calm you are. Plus one star only because there were no injuries involved--people have actually been killed by MUNI accidents, I was fortunate in that respect. And because she actually stopped to deal with it once I finally caught her. read more

I waited an hour for the Embarcadero line and it never showed up !!!! I'm never doing this type of transportation ever again !

I wanted to take No 1 bus at 11:30 in China Town.The driver stopped the bus in the middle of the street instead of the bus stop, the customers got off, I thought he wouldn't stop at the bus stop again, so I rushed to get on,he closed the door,my hand was stuck in the door,then he told me the bus stop was over there, but why he stopped the bus here?Then he opened the door and loosed my hand. He didn't even say sorry, I never saw someone rude like this!!!!! He should not work as a sever and driver! read more
