I followed the sign for AirTrain once I got off the plane. It was easy to navigate as I needed to get on AirTrain to get to the SFO BART station. You ride the blue line to get to the bart station. Once I got to the bart station, there were already trains waiting for you. I had to figure out which one to go. Either one works cause I had to do a transfer later to another line. I end up getting off Balboa Park to transfer from yellow line to blue line for Dublin. Overall, the AirTrain is very convenient. If you are taking bart to go to SFO, you will need to take the AirTrain to go to your terminal. Very convenient. read more

What a great system here. We kept our bags with us when we arrived so all we had to do was exit plane and make our way to the AirTrain. It was a short walk from the terminal to the platform, which is always welcoming. It was a very short wait (under two minutes) before the train came and we took it over to the Car Rental Center. The cars were clean and while there were a lot of people going in, there was plenty of standing room for our bags and ourselves. It was a few minutes to the rental center so it was nice that we came in the morning and the view out the windows was wonderful. Looking at the planes at the gates and on the runways with the mountains in the background is always a pretty picture. Returning my rental car, checking my baggage at a remote location inside of the car rental return area, heading towards the air train. SFO truly makes this a extremely easy transition from returning your car to checking your luggage to boarding the air train. I love the way they run, I love the maps and have found that getting around on them is much easier. It's easy to find from the BART station. However, if you are looking for it from the airport, it can be a touch tricky. But once on, it's a breeze. I love this because I had an experience many years ago of running through the airport. I was on my way to a funeral for a relative in another country. I was with two cousins, one of whom fell. Her suitcase flew open and clothes were strewn about. Her sister went to help her and my cousin said, "No! Run, Diva, Run." And thank goodness she ran because I couldn't keep up. But, we wouldn't have had such an experience today. We could be dropped off at our gate or we could catch an AirTram and find our way to our gate in a much calmer manner. Also, did I mention that it was free??? The only hiccup is at night when it doesn't seem to run as often, but other than that, it's A-okay! read more

The Air Train at SFO has Always been consistent, there's never been a break down since I've used it since 2003. Unlike the one at McCarran in Vegas, on one occasion, the train broke down and when it finally stared running, it got dangerous by the number of semi-angry people packing each train car. But thankfully, there have been no issues here. Thumbs up Air Train mgmt. and facilities staff!! The nice views of 101, fog rolling down the adjacent hills, the panoramic views of SFO itself - what's not to like about this elevated rail. Now there aren't too many places to hold onto, so be careful. But it's clean and I never sensed any danger nor have I heard of any pick pocketing. The ride is very quick, probably 8 minutes from end to end. I usually take the Air Train to get my rental car or to get to the terminal after dropping off my rental car. It's quite efficient for getting to all terminals and for connecting to BART (public train system). Although I've never taken Bart, I'm sure that can be tricky. You've guessed it, I've got CTA PTSD, but that's a review for another day. read more

Came by the other night to hop on the AirTrain from International Garage A to the Hyatt and it was a decent experience. The Air Train station from the International Garage is located on Level 7 of the International Garage 7 and is also accessible via escalator on level 8. The fully automated AirTrain would stop by every ~4 minutes. The red train that I took had no A/C and was hot and humid, like the Underground in London or Metro in Paris. Interestingly enough, the blue train had A/C on full blast like the NYC subway... Signage at the station was plentiful and clear. AirTrain is complimentary. read more

AirTrain is how you get from A to B at SFO. DFW's system is more impressive, but both get the job done. When we were last here, there was a convenient stop for the Grand Hyatt Hotel at the airport, but the you had to walk from the International Terminal to the new Harvey Milk Terminal as that station was still under construction. Trains run in 2 directions (including to the Rental Car Center), and became available fairly often. Signage is good, including directions to BART. The other option is walking, which is actually a reasonable choice if you want the some reasonable exercise. read more

Air Train connects the SFO Terminal with the other main buildings in the area, including Long Term Parking, the Rent Car Center, and the various other parking lot buildings. The trains seem to come every 4-5 minutes and it takes about 4-5 minutes to go between stops. It runs pretty efficiently as opposed to my past experiences to shuttle buses to get from the terminals to rental car centers. Lately I've been parking at Long Term Parking and using the Air Train to get to Terminal 2 and I've always made it there and to my flight with plenty of time to spare. I hope I didn't jinx it with my review, but it seems like the system runs pretty well and on time. read more

I fly in or out of SFO about a hundred times per year. I use AirTrain only intermittently. It is fine system. I write only to note something I did not realize. This falls in the category of stupid things I have done and persisted in doing, only then to have an epiphany. But I have not researched it thoroughly. So someone else would have to explain it as to each terminal, because it varies. What it is, is riding the Airtrain rather than walking to reach the BART Station connected to the airport. I had been doing that. Then this morning, after landing on a JetBlue flight from JFK, in the Harvey Milk terminal (I love that his name adorns a terminal, number one), a helpful ambassador asked me where I was headed. I answered BART. He pointed out how to get there on foot. That is probably comparable in time expended, but I'm a fast walker due to living in New York City. The benefit is the exercise. I intend to proceed in this manner henceforth. PS I have posted here an analysis of mass transit versus taxi/rideshare. My destination is in the middle of the city. The BART and Muni option takes slightly more than twice the time. The cost is a fifth though, at most. So when I hit the ground in the morning, versus at night, with nothing on the agenda, it is much preferred. It also is better for the environment. read more

The views are spectacular during the day, and you feel like the Jetsons cartoon, as the train is so modernistic and quiet. SFO's AirTrain is a groundside (outside security) train that takes passengers between the central rental car pavilion, the parking lots and between the many terminals at SFO. It runs both clockwise and counterclockwise, so you'll definitely want to make sure you are boarding the correct train at the station. Easy, free, clean and relatively quick. I think it was less than ten minutes from the rental car station to Terminal 1. The train is above ground and the cars are glass-enclosed. AirTrain is the fast and easy way to get around San Francisco International Airport (SFO). There are two lines, red and blue. It's best to look at a map, but in simplest terms, if you need to go to the rental car center, take the blue line. Otherwise, take the red. Both lines hit all terminals at the airport plus the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) public transit station. Since the blue line goes to the rental car center, it has a longer route (about 20 minutes round trip). The red line is shorter and quicker. Trains run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and arrive/depart approximately every 3 minutes. Note: The two lines travel in opposite directions (red clockwise, blue counter-clockwise). I've ridden SFO's AirTrain multiple times over the years to both the rental car center to rent a car and to the airport BART station to catch a train into the city. I haven't had any issues. The train is free and efficient. The cars are well maintained, nicely lit and ventilated, clean, and spacious with big windows. The tracks are above-ground, featuring elevated views of the airport and the 101 freeway. There's seating on either end of each car reserved for handicap folks and senior citizens. The rest of the space inside each car is standing room only. The good thing about this is it's easy to roll luggage and push carts on and off the cars. Functional and practical. The cars are Canadian Bombardier Innovia APM 100s, the same model used for the underground train system known as "The Plane Train" at my home airport in Atlanta along with many other airports around the world. Clearly marked signs inside the airport will direct you to the AirTrain which is located on the mezzanine (level 3). The maps are very easy to read and show all of the airlines for each terminal as well as all the rental car companies located at the rental car center. If your rental car company is not located at the rental car center, there is a free shuttle that will take you from the rental car center to your off-airport rental car company. read more

Likely my first and last trip on the Airtrain. Contrary to the description, trains are not guaranteed to run every 4 minutes and are fairly unreliable at night. On a late Sunday night arrival into SFO, I waited 15 minutes for an Airtrain, which, when coupled with the ride, meant that it took 35 minutes to get from terminal 2 to long term parking (1:05am to 1:40am). In that time, I could have driven from SFO to SF and back. read more

The AirTrain will take you to the different terminals, terminals garages, and the BART station at SFO. There are two AirTrain loops....the blue and red lines. The difference between the two is that the blue line will take you to the the rental car section at the airport. The Red line will not. It may be confusing because I felt lost myself during my first time. I had to actually read the signs....there were no buttons to just press, no automatic-anything, lol. This is one of the most convenient additions to the San Francisco Airport. It is clean and fairly fast getting around the airport area. I fly in and out of the United terminal a lot. It is a quick walk over the elevator to the 3rd floor, then across to the garage and up to the AirTrain. Granted, it would have been nicer if they could have avoided the additional elevator ride up to the AirTrain platform, but it was added after the terminal was built. When you get on the AirTrain platform, one platform takes you on a train that just circles the airport terminals and the BART station. The other takes you to the rental car facility. Quick tip. If the airport is really crowded and you have to drop someone off, just drop them off at the AirTrain station at the rental car center rather than taking them all the way in to the terminal madness. read more

Why all the poor reviews?I think the Air Train is WONDERFUL! It is super convenient and easy to use. There are signs on each platform that show you which way you need to go depending on where you want to go. I found it easy to access and use. Unfortunately, due to the amount of the humidity in San Francisco (fog), the cars smell a little funky. I'm not sure if it was mildew or mold, but it definitely had a scent. Signs getting to the Air Train can be confusing. We had to stop off by the information desk to find out where to go. The upward arrow signage that they had either meant straight or upstairs. We were confused but eventually figured it out. Air Train is on the upper level from the main level where we deplaned. We needed to get to the car rental area and Air Train took us straight there. We also took Air Train from the car rental area to the airport terminal. Both ways were easy to commute to. read more

Air train is nice for getting to one part of the airport to another. Before one would need to walk the whole area. This was a big airport and walking with families or older adults would be hard. Just that these trains are confusing. One train only goes around the airport and the other goes to the parking structure. Nice segue from terminals to car rental. Clean and efficient!

It was just odd seeing this as a 'check-in' option on my trusty Yelp app on my phone, which means I could actually write a review on this thing, sure, why not! There wasn't any real clear signs when getting off the plane to get my luggage to know how to go to the rental car area and I had to ask the information desk where to go. Eventually, after spiraling upward to get to the platform to the AirTrain we were on our way... or were we? You have to look exactly at where you are going cause one of the AirTrain's just circles the terminal, while the other actually goes all the way to the rental car area. The one thing about these train's is that they are roomy. Enough to haul your big (super huge) suitcase and golf clubs without any problems, the problem I see is that there are no seats in these things, some people have to ride a far distance to the rental car company, and I think I saw two seats for the handicapped, but others, like seniors, or people that are tired on their feet, it would have been nice to put a few more seats, as these trains are wide. The trains are good though, as I didn't realize how big SFO really was until riding it, and it beats travelling on some trolley bus to other parts of the airport! read more

One of the best things about your domestic UAL flight arriving at the international terminal is the quick and easy access to AirTrain. The downside is hearing "Please hold on, please set luggage cart brake to on" six or seven times as you return from the auto rental center. I'll post the rad photo I took from the train. read more
