I ordered takeout from here one night and found myself asking "how have I not ordered from here before?" The restaurant is on Westcott Street and has been open literally longer than I've been alive. It very much has the vibe of a local spot that probably has regulars. Parking can be tight on Westcott itself but there is a small lot that they share with Mom's diner. Inside there's a bar and a second dining room with a stage where I think they do trivia. Lots of nice decor. It feels very homey. I heard they had a hummus shake and was intrigued to try it. They have a bunch of syrups they can mix in to flavor it. It was interesting. Very very syrupy sweet, and the taste is unusual at first but kinda grew on me. The real star was the savory food though. I went for a shrimp gyro. As a pescatarian, I was psyched to see this on the menu because most places around here only have falafel or meat, so it was nice to have another option. The shrimp were SO PLUMP and well seasoned. Very big size and quite full inside the pita. Felt that I was getting my money's worth. The vegetables were very fresh, pita soft, and sauce perfectly tangy. To be honest I'm still dreaming of this. I'd try more of their options. Also worth noting, when I called in my takeout order the hostess (/server?) was so incredibly courteous and friendly in a way that feels fairly rare anymore. read more

I think these guys have the flash in the kitchen. Within 10 minutes of ordering the beautiful pictures below were brought to us. My chicken gyro bowl was packed with flavor and well arranged so I could eat different things on the plate as I wanted. This included the chicken, rice, a salad, toasted pita bread, pickled onions, and a zesty cheese dipping sauce I couldn't quite place but I lived. Had to take the rest to go. I went to an event with about 25 people a few nights ago. Our servers were wonderful, getting drinks, checking back in for refills, taking the orders, making sure everything was going well. The meals came out one table at a time, which was nice because sometimes in large groups food comes out some here some there. I shared the large Mazza Plate with a friend, which came with 9 samplings of their appetizers and warm pita bread. Some of my favorites on the plate ...babaganoush(eggplant dip), falafel (chick pea fritters) and the feta and tomato salad. The spanokopita was very good too, crispy pillows of phyllo dough filled with creamy spinach. The tzatziki sauce was perfect for dipping. Great every time. My go-tos are the loaded Greek fries ($10), Majida's Chicken ($18), and the hummus. They have my favorite hummus around--it's just slightly creamier than everyone else's. Their tzatziki is also my favorite around--packed with flavor. My biggest takeaway here is that they know how to flavor their food and balance their dishes. I held a dinner event here for 27 people and they executed it flawlessly. They don't have a cocktail menu but they do have a full bar and a fair selection of beer and wine. They are knowledgeable on gluten free needs. The dining room has a nice ambiance and can be rearranged to accommodate different party sizes. While visiting Syracuse, got local reco to visit Wescott street for good restaurant options - we picked Mediterranean cuisine and it did not disappoint. Service was friendly and had a very relaxed, casual environment. Ordered spanakopita as starter, was not as temperature hot as I thought it might be served however was very tasty and well presented. Importantly, the Gyro dinner and Kiftka wrap both hit the mark ... plus fresh cut fries (plain and sweet potatoes) were hot out of the fryer, seasoned excellently and outstanding sides for any meal! Finally I think their tzatziki sauce was one of the best I've ever had - smooth, creamy and thick with nice garlic flavor, you can add this to anything on the menu for great flavor! The lounge was a bit empty and gloomy in the early afternoon, but we were served fresh, delicious food with very attentive and friendly service.Everything was prepared by people who know how to cook. The appetizer platter was a great choice, but so was everything else we tried. All of the meats were super juicy and flavorful. Salads were fresh. Falafel were crispy and well seasoned. Even the grilled onions were particularly delicious. The one thing that could be better food wise was if they served homemade pita. The decor is kitchy and going for what seems like an Arabic theme. Very disappointed. If you're looking for a real Gyro, from the rotisserie- this is not the place. The menu says that's it is, but don't be fooled. They apologized for this and offered us free dessert- but honestly I chose this place because the menu specifically says "off the rotisserie". They tried to say that other restaurants don't have the rotisserie either- we called King David's and they assured us that they do. Also, their coffee is just just regular gas station drip- nothing notable for a Mediterranean restaurant. With all that being said, the service was solid, atmosphere was okay, and other food was decent. We had a sampler which included Greek salad, dolmades (on the smaller side), and baba ghanoush. The baba ghanoush was great and we recommend it. I'd be afraid to try any traditional meals here because I wonder what other corners they cut. Again, this place isn't terrible, the food isn't bad, it's just really really not what I expected based on the website/menu. read more

Attended an event that was catered by Munjed's and was WAY impressed. Sampled the moussaka, hummus, greek salad, and grape leaves. Everything was very tasty and I left with a big plate of leftovers that I excitedly gobbled down the next day... just as good as I had remembered. There are a few very good middle eastern places in and around Syracuse, Munjed's is one of them. I've been here a few times and I have always enjoyed my meal. It doesn't hurt that it resides next to the famous local mexican joint, Alto Cinco and the Wescott Theater. Although it always seems half empty, that just makes the wait shorter! The place is also quite affordable. I had the Falafel dinner (mildly spiced, fried chic pea patties (6) served w/ hommus, salad, and pita) which was excellent and very filling. A couple friends loved the waffle fries (which I thought was weird in a middle eastern restaurant, but I'm happy with waffle fries anywhere!). I've been to Israel a few times and the pita there is incredible, so it's hard to live up to with pita here in the US. It was ok, but the hummus was fantastic. The Souvlaki (grilled chunks of "marinated" tenderloin tips served w/ greek salad, tzatziki sauce and pita) got a thumbs up from one friend, but the Spanakopita (fillo pastry dough, filled with spinach and feta cheese, topped with tzatziki sauce, served with hommus and greek salad) got a thumbs down from another friend for being extremely dry. Wifey got the Moussaka (layers of ground beef, eggplant and sliced potatoes topped w/ bechamel cream sauce and served with greek salad and pita) and had no complaints and she's been all over the eastern mediterranean multiple times. Munjed's is very affordable with quality dinner dishes from $9-12. I will definitely go there (and to King David's in Fayetteville) whenever I get a craving for falafel and hummus in Da Cuse. When I saw the place was empty at 2 pm except for one man at the bar I was worried. However we sat down and greeted by a friendly waitress. We started with the falafel which were very nice, we followed by a gyro, and a souvlaki, not sure what third sandwich was. Munjed offers consistently good Middle Eastern food - the combo platters are huge and give you a good mix of flavors. The Greek Salad with their house dressing is very good and I usually substitute it for the tabboleh. Not that the tabboleh isn't good, I just like the salad better! We ordered dolmades, shwarma, souvlaki and dessert. The dolmades were very good. The shwarma was gristly and tough. Souvlaki was ok. The accompaniments: falafel was crispy and tasty; the salad a soggy mess of iceberg lettuce; humous was runny. The pistachio bihrma was crisp and flavorful; the baklava, however, was old and soggy. We sent it back and the staff kindly replaced it with a fresh one while deducting the price. The waitress was attentive and cheerful. I was writing a review of King Davids on Marshall Street recently. While I have not been to King Davids in some time I have been to Munjed's for takeout quite a bit. I had friends in the neighborhood and whenever I was in Syracuse we would get take out from Munjed's. Unfortunately I could not remember the name. I just knew that it was located on Westcott. Syracuse has several good Middle Eastern Restaurants and this is one of the best. Munjed's is a lenten favorite among Orthodox Christians in the area. Personally, it is one of the things I look forward to when I go home for Holy Week every year. Their sampler with hummus, falafel, and other sides is wonderful. It's always very fresh and flavored well. It never sits heavy in your stomach or tastes too oily. The best part is the location. Started with dessert first. Our Son got the Baklava cheesecake... oh was it delicious! Smooth cheesecake with a melt in your mouth base covered in walnuts and sugar rose water syrup. She enjoyed them all the home made Babaganouj was really good and flavorful! Our son picked the Souvlaki he really enjoyed it the steak was really tender and very flavorful. Just not a big fan. To be fair, I've only had their food two or three times. It was okay -- just not to my taste. And one time I ordered a side of "olives and feta" -- turned out to be crumbled feta with sliced black olives, clearly ingredients for some other dish. I found this confusing. My rating is based exactly on Yelp's description of two stars: "Meh. I've experienced better." But if you're inclined and in the neighborhood, check it out -- why not? Went there on a Saturday evening, not many people seated but service was horrible. Food was just okay. Falafel was crispy and I liked the tabbouleh but the pita bread served with the hummus tasted old. It had a stale refrigerator taste. My favorite Arab food in Central New York, Munjed's is classier than it used to be, but still has great, healthy food and good (but increasing) prices. A vegetarian standby, and on a street with some of my other favorite area restaurants, as well as a nice movie theater that is preferential to independent, foreign, or arthouse films, some nice shopping (see if you can find the Second Floor Bookstore), and places to get a drink. My favorites are largely basics (and I've never had the meat dishes but my friends never seem to tire of them). The dolmades (grapeleaves) are great and I love the spinach pie, and of course most especially the hommus and the falafel (a vegetarian patty) sandwiches.Their veggie combo also includes tabouli, and they also have good babaganouj (an eggplant mash). And you can top it all off with some cheap pastries from their bake shoppe. read more
