While on route to Andover, we noticed a free standing Munson's store on the side of the road. An interesting placement, but I understand this is their original location since the late 1940s. This is the Munson's factory location. This is where they manufacture all of their delightful chocolates and distribute them across all Munson's stores. The inside is filled with all sorts of truffles, barks, raisin covered chocolates. They had a whole line of chocolate lovers waiting their turn. Once it was my turn, the young man behind the counter asked what I would like and in what size box. I got mostly dark chocolate covered raisins and just a few truffles. Everything is sold by weight. For fancy, premium, locally owned chocolate this is very appropriately priced. If you like chocolate you'll love Munson's, if you looovvvvvveee chocolate you'll be in heaven with each bite. The truffles are rich and creamy, with outstanding notes of orange, raspberry, or mint. If you haven't yet tried Munson's, please do, or give them to a very happy recipient as a gift! read more

How do you get good small batch chocolate? Go to a Connecticut family owned chocolate maker whose family has been doing it since 1946. I had the opportunity to visit their Bolton location located on Route 6 (after a visit to the Ren faire). Bolton may not be their original location from the 1940s, but its the store situated next to their factory that sources all chocolate to their other locations. The outside of the store is BEAUTIFUL and big. You can't miss it when you drive by. I promise. I know because I've driven by it like 10x over the last 15 years and just never pulled the trigger. Well I'm I finally did. The inside of that store is also BEAUTIFUL, modern and immaculate. The chocolate options behind the glass displays and in other sections to the left and right give you overwhelming amount to choose from. My daughter and I literally spent an 45 min - 1 hr in the store just to decide what we wanted for a take home treat. They work with UCONN so they have some UCONN themed or packaged products (Storrs campus is just 25 min down the street). They have packages for that special someone and other themed wraps/baskets. To get the most bang for our buck we ended up going with the "leftover" bags which were broken pieces of various chocolates during the production. Beat decision as it allowed us to try different chocolates. They even have a wall on right when walking where you read about their history with a digital sign. I created a digital fundraiser with munsons for a school PTO fundraiser and it was a positive experience. Setting up the online fundraiser was fairly easy and communication from them was clear. They were very precise with getting orders right and communicating regarding pickup and conclusion of the campaign. There was a steady stream of customers for a Saturday morning but the girls at the counter were extremely patient as I perused the window case. We had hoped to use these for an upcoming wedding. We bought a box of truffles in a box of assorted to see what we wanted to put in our custom filled boxes. We received them OK except all the packing material it was melted on the hottest day of the year, - - I will chalk that up to the whether or not them. when we try them, my son said they tasted like dollar store chocolates. Looking at some of the Yelp reviews I knew what to expect when I walked in that I had to go to the register and wait for somebody to wait on me. There was about eight people there yet it actually didn't take a long time. I was waited on by a very pleasant lady named Sarah who helped me make hard decisions, lol, on picking my assortment of chocolates. I decided to go with 2 milk chocolate pretzel rods , a cube called Bolton Bear Traxx(fudge & peanut butter mixed with peanuts w/ carmel inside) , a macadamia milk chocolate and white chocolate bark, a cube of almond butter with pink Himalayan sea salt, to graham cracker minis with brittle toffee on top and too small chocolate fingers. (13.99 for all) each weighed individually due to weight variation prices. I should have ordered 50 of the Himalayan sea salt they are that good I want some more !!! Creamy in texture in a nice touch of the salt made the butter Pop!!!! They ended up all being delicious. I also had to get 1 red rock candy for my youngest he loves them, but you can't find them everywhere. I ate both pretzel rods while driving back the 50 minutes it took to get here. read more

Tried Munsons at another location, then found out that this is the main store/factory. We've tried the barks, nuggets, and even the tubs of seconds, and they're all good. There are slightly better tasting chocolates at other places, but to me, they're too pricey. Maybe because they're not mass produced, or fully hand made that commands the high price, but dollar for dollar, this is the place to get your chocolate fix. The staff is very friendly and helpful, and if you're buying more than one type, they do mark the box so it eliminates the guessing when your home. Most of the items in the deli type case are selling by the pound. Items at $23 or $27 a pound sounds expensive, but after tasting them, it's worth it. Also remember if you're buying a run of the mill candy bar, and you figure out how much a pound for that piece of crap, that's when you realize the price for Munsons is worth it. read more

Placed a quick order for chocolates for mothers day to be shipped on a Wednesday approximately 2:00 p.m. Paid for two day shipping so it would arrive in plenty of time. What I didn't know was on the bottom of the website is a shipping tab which states in the fine print that warm weather shipping only goes out three days, M-T and Wed......the website allows me to pay almost the cost of the product extra for shipping but does not clearly state that it only applies to three days a week! I went to Munsons in Bolton on a Monday, a few weeks ago. I've been going there for years. I'm pretty overweight, and sometimes enjoy their candy at the end of a long day. So when the sales lady sees me, I say hello, like usual, and she replied, "Hitting the candy a little early this week, aren't you?" I'm 44 years old. Originally from Manchester. My family moved to SC in 1997. My first memories of Munson Chocolates was with my mother and grandmother. We went weekly. Seriously. When we moved here I've ordered chocolates atleast 4 times a year. For my wife always a pound of dark chocolate orange cream and a pound of dark chocolate raspberry cream. I'd ordered the same for my mother. Then of course the turkeys and Santa's for the kids. My wife ordered assortments for customers here in SC. Every time I have ordered chocolates it's never less than $150.00. Some would say that's too much for chocolate. But I'm a firm believer that you get what you pay for. I ordered my family the same order last month. And unfortunately as my wife has passed away it was only for my mom. This Evening I figured I'd place an order for my mom. Pick up some hot cocoa, and other things, probably $300 worth. But I couldn't find customize your own selection. I figured it must be a problem with my browser. So I called. The woman that answered told me, get this, "they are all out of the packaging for customizing your order, and won't be able to offer them until after the holidays". Not an offer of another way around that. I know when I drove up to Munson's last year all the way from SC they just piled the candy in on top of each other in the white box and sent me on my way. 1200 miles of hell to get to Munson's Chocolate in Bolton. I'll never spend another dime here. EVER. I'd gladly have paid overnight shipping and taken 3 pounds of each. But they're unwillingness to provide to customers at the holidays is preposterous. Stopped by at 3pm on a Saturday and it was quite busy. Very well staffed, though not very clear as to the best way to order from the case. I got behind a crowd of people waiting in front if the case to order only to find out about 10 mins later all people should form a line near the registers regardless of what you're ordering. There is a sign, but hanging from the ceiling and not noticeable to most. Very clean store and friendly staff. This is their flagship store. Many improvements since I was here years ago, but I miss the display of second hand chocolates, that was my favorite part about this location. read more

Overrated chocolate with no vegan options. I came here for years as a kid, but was never really impressed by the taste or prices. They're your typical chocolate and candy store and they have zero interest in offering even one dairy-free chocolate. Try their dark chocolate you might say. Nope, even that has butterfat in it. Really? Most fine dark chocolates are just that, chocolate. If you want added sugar and other fillers, then Munson's is for you. I won't be returning, unless they offer something vegan in the future. We arrived and didn't realize that they were 4 minutes past closed but she let other people in that were right in front of us and couldn't be bothered to tell us they were closed. Just let them in, closed the door on us and locked it. Cute shop! The staff here was super friendly and helpful. The shop was clean and organized which is always nice. There isn't a huge selection or anything here but there are still plenty of choices. This is more of a testament to creating good quality products vs making a ton of mediocre quality items. My only complaint is there are only a few fun flavors? I'm a dessert lover and love chocolates especially dark chocolates so when I go, I go for the pick your own truffle choices and they weigh it for the total price. They like to have you pick by sections since the chocolates in the same section is the same price per lb. it makes it easier for them to calculate the total price. My friend told me they also have ice cream sandwiches in the back if you ask for it which I didn't know! I like to support Munson's since I do like their variety and it's a CT brand. The only thing I don't find myself going there too often since I don't want to eat too many and always have these in the house to munch on. Delicious chocolate! Ordered 1/4 chocolate covered espresso beans, peppermint patty. The kids got peanut butter cups and truffles. Everyone was happy with their choices. We spent $11 and received a free mini milk chocolate bar as a thank you in celebration of their 70th anniversary! Options include prepackaged chocolate, or options behind the glass that you can pick and choose. For the fall season they had themed chocolate bars - ghosts and pumpkins. Great chocolates, but do not order them on line for delivery. You pay an arm and a leg for shipping, and then they don't get there on time. The website is not clear/misleading on that when you select expedited shipping. They don't package or mail anything on Saturday or Sunday, so won't even get your order until Monday (or next business day). Stop by the store, but don't order online. Rocky Mountain Chocolates are just as good chocolates, and better for online orders. read more
