My husband and I had a fabulous dinner at Murphy's Restaurant in Castletownbere. We started with an excellent prawns and chorizo appetizer and then had the duck dinner and the leg of lamb dinner. We finished with the pavlova. Each dinner had plentiful sides of potatoes, carrots, green beans, parsnips and red cabbage. Everything was fresh, abundant and delicious. The service was very good. We had a lovely chat with the 3rd generation chef/owner who not only cooked a great meal but also made some nice recommendations for our trip. It was be very difficult to beat their Seafood Chower! It was probably one of the very best I've had so far. We also had the Pan Roasted Hake and it was just average. The Lamb roast and stuffing was better then average. Very generous portions of food. Service was very good, friendly and welcoming. The level of noise was a bit on the loud side, perhaps due to 2 families with young children. Oh yes! Must mention about the Murphy's draught beer, it was excellent! read more

I was hanging out in Castletownbere, with my husband, & we were really enjoying our day out that we decided to go for something to eat. We looked at the menu in Murphys Restaurant, thought it looked good, we both found something that we would like to eat, so we decided to ask for a table for 2! We looked through the menu and the special's and decided on what we wanted to eat &, oh boy, it did not disappoint, so much so, that we have been back a few times more. The food for starters, mains & desserts are MOUTH WATERING & we can't wait to go back again. The staff are very friendly and great to have a chat with, when they are not rushed off their feet. Great little spot for seafood - the seafood chowder wirh brown bread is a must! It's technically a starter but the portion is generous and the chowder is filled with delicious prawns and bits of white fish. It comes to the table piping hot and warms the tummy. It would be great on a rainy West Cork afternoon - or even better on a warm summer afternoon! Order one of the specials off of the giant chalkboard that they bring to your table and you won't be disappointed. My monk fish was delicious. Docked them a star for bland veg from a freezer bag and potatoes- so order yours with the salad and chips option. From the moment we met Mr. John Murphy outside watering his hanging baskets, we knew we were in for a warm and friendly place to eat. We were not disappointed in the least! For all of you who have written about.... and tasted....Mr. Murphy's seafood chowder, you are 100% correct! The very best I have ever "slurped"! Local restaurant in what is sayed the largest fishing harbor of Ireland. They serve meat and fish. The lunch menu is not that much of what you might expect from a seafood restaurant. Two choices: catch of the day haddock in two flavours (fried and deep fried) and crab claws. The crab is delicious. Would love to try the diner menu but we have to move on. Next time. Service and restauran is family style. They don't sell beer, but if you order one they get it from the pub accross the street. Very nice. read more

If you are in Castletownbere and are looking for a place for great food in a restaurant that is family run then look no further than Murphy's. The proprietor, John is a gracious host and one heck of a pastry chef so be sure to try the deserts. His son is the chef, at least the night we were there, and created several fresh entres. Our group ordered two fresh salmon, one fresh white fish (forgot the name) and chicken Kiev. All were great. Did I mention we had a great desert! During a recent stay in Castletownbere, our family found this to be the only place serving food after 5:30. Thankfully, Murphy's proved to be outstanding. There were many menu and specials to choose from and everything was wonderful. Our family included seven and all found something they were happy with. We also found the price to be very reasonable. Please note they do not have beer on tap, but did serve wine and bottled beer. They also do not accept credit cards. We found the restaurant to be charming and bright. I like this place. The food was pretty good. And it was very well priced. I ended up getting a hamburger. It was delicious. It had bacon and onion rings and it had a great flavor. I would order that again Anytime Anyplace. With that said, I did see the creepy owner. Nothing like having a sex offender in your midst. I would come back here again. So glad other restaurants were closed on Sunday evening and we stumbled upon Murphys. I had a prawn and lobster dish in brandy cream sauce. It was divine. My husband had a stuffed lamb dish that was equally as delicious. We also shared the chocolate cheesecake at the owners insistence and devoured every morsel....my husband came close to licking the plate. Lovely spot, lovely service, all family, and a congenial owner intent on making you feel welcome. Don't hesitate a moment. Go and enjoy! read more
