After driving the Ring of Kerry and visiting the Cliffs of Kerry to see the Skellig Islands, we found a small place that we could get gluten free food. We ordered Fish and Chips and BBQ ribs. The service was as friendly as anywhere we visited in Ireland, but the food was incredible. The fish tasted as if it was caught this morning, but the ribs were spectacular. Visited this restaurant while waiting for Skellig boat tour. We ordered the seafood platter and found it to be quite good. The platter for two has a little bit of everything. Breaded mussels, crab claws, fried fish, fried calamari, shrimp salad, crab salad, and accompanying chips and salad. The meal was very good. They do a nice job on just about everything and the portion was great for two people. They have a nice selection of whiskeys and beer. We really enjoyed this local place. I have no idea why this restaurant has received high ratings. My husband, brother and I stopped here for lunch yesterday and we very disappointed about the quality of food. We ordered the seafood stew which was lacking taste and minimal fish. We also had the fish cakes which were the worst I've ever tasted. They were prepared with more breading than fish. We couldn't continue eating them. The service was good but it can't make up for the lack of quality in the food they serve. read more

We stumbled into this family run bar and restaurant on our way out from Valentia Island. We walked in, with most things closed on St Pats day in Ireland - it was like we had walked in on a family gathering unexpectedly. Once they realized we weren't from around the nearby small seaside towns, they welcomed us in and we ordered at the bar. The place was very cozy with a fire going. The smell of sea and boats filled the space, the only way an authentic aroma can so permanently. Highly recommend the delicious chowder with local fresh caught fish chunks and hearty brown bread for dipping. Wish we could have stayed for a bigger meal! read more

If you ever, for whatever reason, happen to be in this town, you cannot miss this place. Also given there's only two other spots to get food. The seafood platter was great (see picture), great portions, not too greasy, good combination of tastes. Bar food is what you'd expect. Not overly great or bad. Fish and chips is the strongest item on the menu but they keep the skin of the fish on it before it's breaded. I'm not too sure how I feel about that. It wasn't terrible but it definitely gave it a weird texture. Fries were pretty good. Beer was alright. Be sure to load everything with salt and sauce or taste nothing at all. Fish was fresh and pretty good but the skin really threw me off. read more

My family and I were driving through the Skellig Ring and needed a place to stop for lunch. Portmagee has a little Main Street with a few restaurants dotting it. We went to the end of the street where we found The Fisherman's Bar. We walked in to a tiny bar area that seemed to be filled with mostly locals. Next to the bar area was a small(ish) restaurant area. We were delighted by the tiny tables and chairs (or maybe they just felt tiny to us because we're a tall group, who knows). There was great Irish music playing in the background as we perused our menus. Not a ton of choices but that doesn't matter. My husband ordered the seafood platter and it had the best stuffed mussels and fresh crab claws. My mom and I split the fish and chips. Everything was about as fresh as you can get. Stopped in here 8 months ago after visiting Skellig Michael. Great interior - intimate, pubby, and, yes, quaint small tables! I had mussels which were some of the best in all of Ireland, and my husband had a fried shrimp dish - which to this day (after ordering 30 shrimp dishes from all over the world) he still swears is the absolute best shrimp. So fresh and tender, almost like a fish or crabmeat. It's was a lovely meal, prompt service, and great beer. We can't wait to come back and visit - and get the shrimp! read more

Wife had cottage pie and it was ok but underwhelming (no veggies just hamburger gravy and lots of potatoes- like every dish in Ireland.) eat seafood in this port town and enjoy the freshness. read more

Seafood platter was tasty with generous portion, and seafood chowder was good but it had only fishes in it, no clam or shellfish. Seafood chowder comes with bread but you can ask to replace it with a side salad. read more
