Been to Music Farm a bunch of times now for shows and dance nights. It's a pretty big, all-standing venue, which is awesome when it's not totally packed because you actually have room to move around and dance. ​The bar setup is super convenient. There's one in the back, it's open 360-degrees, you can still get drinks pretty fast from the other side even when the place is slammed. They also have a little kitchen window serving up burgers and fries--the food is honestly SO good, especially after a few drinks. ​The only real downside is that the sound engineering isn't the best. The audio bounces off the walls a lot, so I definitely recommend bringing earplugs to block out that extra echo. Luckily, if you forget yours, they usually have some at the front right before you walk in! read more

I'll make this short and to the point. It's a blacked out middle school theater. It does the job it should be doing - providing a good time with good music (if you yourself are a good time and enjoy the particular music played that evening). There was a stage, lighting, restrooms, a very large bar, a pit, and upstairs area, and an outside area to smoke. Check, check, check. One thing that did stand out was the kindness of the bartenders. What can you say? It's a music venue with parking nearby, a cashless bar, and a room full of cramped people listening to music. There are bathrooms. I've been coming to shows here off and on for years. The drinks are pricey, which is expected for any place downtown, and to be honest, they were not very strong, but it is what it is. Love this intimate venue for a show. The bar is easily accessible, staffed by friendly, attentive individuals. I recently saw Geoff Tate there and the bartender was super-friendly and engaging, noting my cute shirt while her head was on a swivel looking for others in need. This was such a cool venue for live music, I can't believe I haven't noticed it before. We went to a sold out Bowling For Soup concert and it really didn't feel that crowded and the lines weren't long. I would definitely come back here for more shows. What a cool venue and what an amazing show we got to see last night! Our tickets were only $25 and we got to see three artists/bands play, including on of our all time favorites Summer Salt. I love that there are two levels that you can stand on. This was the first concert I was actually able to see over folks heads/shoulders, because we came early and got a spot right along the railing of the upper level. It's just higher by a few feet, but it makes all of the difference. Other things to know: Plenty of paid lots and street parking around. Very nice staff/security. The bathrooms were way better than expected. And you can buy alcoholic drinks, nonalcoholic drinks, fries, and merch during the shows. read more

Not sure what's with the low rating, but frankly you Charlestonites are spoiled rotten with this place. We saw Sam Evian/Tennis here and there's not a bad spot in the house, really. We were mostly up front but there's a small step up 2nd level for a better view and then the bar area. People do tend to congregate in weird areas, like just blocking the merch table at the very back instead of getting closer, but whatever. Sloppy drunk concert girl was there but she's somehow at every show in the world simultaneously. The bar staff here was lovely, fast and patient right til the end. No issues with any entry staff. When we got out at 1030-11 on a Friday the whole area was overflowing with drunk college bros already wasted so I would guess you fall into that category if you were kicked out. I wish this was in my home state!!! Props to a killer venue and I'm sure no one sees all the hard work that goes into it. read more

Not sure what some of the negative reviews are about. Was there for the Son Volt concert 4/28. This place was very clean including bathrooms. Great little bar spot for live bands. The staff was friendly and very efficient. Never had to wait to more than a minute order a drink and it was near full/sold out. There's 3 tiers of sight lines so you can see over people from the middle and back of the room. Only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 was: The house sound system is pretty good, but they could greatly improve it with some suspended speakers and some room treatment for acoustics. Clarity of the sound was an issue. It's an old warehouse with bare wood ceilings, walls, and concrete floors. Makes for a lot of sound bounce. Overall, a very good place to see a band. read more

This is a local music venue in downtown Charleston. That is a lot of fun to go to. I've been twice now to see different types of shows. Every time I've been. It's been a good time. The staff has been super friendly, and quick. There is food available and a very good for a concert venue. The drinks have been very good and the acoustics are fantastic for a rock show. Online ticket purchase was easy but I'd love to have more hours available for their box office. All in all a fun date night to check out awesome bands! read more

In fact it was chilly before the bands started and then it was downright comfortable in the middle of May. Staff was exceedingly nice and helpful. Beers were expensive, but not enough to drop stars. Had a great night here seeing one of our favorite bands. Only a 4 hour drive from Jax right in the middle of beautiful downtown Charleston. I really hope a band we want to see plays here again. The bar service was quick but a little overpriced even for Charleston. The bathrooms also weren't clean. I'd definitely stop in for another concert though. I'd give them less than one star if possible! this venue refused my friend entrance with her service when she stepped out for smoke break. She was already inside, stepped out, then THOMAS refused her re-entry! in case no one here is smart enough to read the ADA states service dogs will not be refused entry into any venue, location. it's against the law to refuse entry. She had ear plugs for dog, but really not Thomas' concern, after he stated he's conscientious objector! He made his small minded problem my friend's problem by refusing re-entry! it's against the law! read more

Where do I start? For starters, I have now attended Soulja Boy at this venue twice. Once this year and once last. Both times of course the crowd was filled with messy drunk college girls who can't handle themselves who get told off. Eventually I noticed in the crowd people get ready to fight and I alerted security, they pretended to care and then went back to their corner. Each time, at both concerts might I add, after I alerted security and they brushed it off, the fight did occur and then they slowly went to take care of it. My friend tonight got hit in the face and DID NOT hit back for her protection from being removed from the facility and there were so many witnesses to attest to that she did not hit back. But indeed girl saw my friend get hit and came to her defense and did start fighting the girl who had hit her. A bald security man had a power trip and removed my poor CRYING friend from the concert after everyone and I mean EVERYONE around made him aware that she was hit and did not hit back. Eventually security allowed her back in but at that point she had waited an hour before the concert to secure her spot and she was stuck in the back to then be kicked out AGAIN unprovoked because she was seen speaking with a security guard for comfort about the situation by the manager JAMES. JAMES YOU ARE SICK. ALL OF YOUR WORKERS WERE SCARED TO DEFEND MY FRIEND BECAUSE YOU ARE CLEARLY A POS WHO "RUNS OVER" THE PEOPLE AROUND HIM. Disgusting how unaware and messy this facility is run with security dismissing attention being brought to obviously rowdy, troublesome attendees and abusing paying patrons. Can't wait to get in touch with the owner about how his employees are running this place. Same concert, two different years, and the same bad shit happening because of dismissive staff and house policy. read more

Building Review: Went to a fashion event yesterday here and it was just okay. It was really dope that they had a bar, but the drinks were pretty weak. The building was kind of cool because it has an older vibe (reminds me of Saint Andrews in Detroit), but it clearly needed some work. The bathrooms were gross and hardly any of the doors had locks. There should have been fitting rooms due to the fact that it's fashion week in Charleston and they had vintage vendors in the building that night. People were changing and trying clothes on in bathrooms and everywhere; not okay. Unorganized. Event Review: I wish I would have had more time to look through all of the separate vintage racks. I love vintage clothing and there were some dope pieces at the venue. Customer service at each of the booths was great and I even was able to get a henna tattoo. I have probably seen 30 shows at the Farm... okay maybe 29, but it always keeps me coming back for more. I believe the building used to be an old train depot and the curved roof inside gives a unique acoustic to the building. Because of its size and layout, there isn't a bad spot to stand in the house. There is a rectangular bar in the back and a small bar (only open on busier nights and cash only) to the side of the stage. This is a great place just to stop in without a plan to see some live music and have drinks, or plan ahead and go to one of their major shows. As a warning, sold out shows are elbow to elbow but you should probably expect that at any similar venue. The location is great being that you can grab dinner or pregame at plenty of restaurants or bars in the upper king area and there is a parking garage across the street. read more

Unfortunately this establishment is just sad. I really do enjoy a majority of the acts they have perform, but it's just reoccurring that I have had problems here. Tonight I went in as underage, sober, just trying to see my friends in the band playing that night. i did not argue nor make a scene, I just simply washed my hands after going to the bathroom and the cheap marker music farm used to identify that I was underage couldn't stay stay on my hands even if I just dropped one drop of sweat. I got escorted out by not one but TWO different employees grabbing my arms. I didn't say one word nor made an argument for the fact I was so terrified. Never I have I ever felt so violated for doing nothing but being sanitary. I wouldn't go here if u just want to listen to good music and not be filthy. read more

There used to be a place called The Plex in North Charleston, which hosted some great live music, but closed down about 3 years ago. Since then, for me, these is no better place that has the acoustics and warmth of sound, as the Music Farm has. I am not sure why, perhaps the wood ceilings but the sound is clear, loud and rich. I have been there about ten times, they do not get huge names (Bacon Brothers..) but if you like entertainment in the concert format, you have to check out the FARM more than once, go a few times to really feel the vibe the place definitely has, very soulful. up in NYC, I have been to CBGB's a million times, Lamour Brooklyn (and East) the Continental, he Ritz, Paramount, Hammerheads,etc.. and so many more, that's what me and the gang did. BUILDING: THIS is the coolest part of the venue - it is situated in an old warehouse. Make sure to take a look around if you go here so you can appreciate the architecture. BOOZE: The have a few 'craft' beers, several 'domestics', and mixed drinks. STAFF: The bartenders were surprisingly attentive, especially considering the crowd. The entrance staff seemed to hate their jobs. They were having to frisk everyone before they went in (which was also surprising to me - it was like TSA-level detailed). There was no real security, just one guy looking through the crowd, non-elevated, which meant he could not really see anything going on beyond the front row. It seemed like he was there more to protect the performer than to keep the crowd safe. At one point I was shoved in to a wall and could not move because of the crowd. BATHROOMS: I did not actually ever get to see them because the line was so long. From how slow it was moving, I imagine there were only a couple of stalls. In general, it is exactly what you can expect from the average music venue: a little dirty, mediocre acoustics, overpriced alcohol, and long bathroom lines. I am not saying I wouldn't go there again and decent bands go through it, which is the only reason I give it 3 stars instead of 2. read more

This is a difficult one to review. The venue is fantastic. It is spacious, right in the heart of Charleston and a great sound quality. Now where is the concern, the quality of the acts booked. I know, I am one opinion but if they got the acts the Pour House gets downtown, I would be much happiness. I have frequented this place for live music for a while now but I avoided reviewing because it just was not my favorite. I am ready to review because they have really stepped it up! Starting with lines waiting for shows to start, they have seemed more organized and better or more efficiently staffed to accommodate the crowds. Another modification is the ramps inside that replaced steps which were easily stumbled on when walking from the bar area towards the stage in the dark and vice versa. About a year ago huge fans were added on the ceiling to help circulate air and that helped considerably with the extreme humidity in Charleston. I am not sure what other changes have been made to the ventilation system but the past 3 shows I have attended have not been nearly as hot as even a year prior. Temperature control alone is enough to motivate a review from me because that was one on my few complaints about the venue. This has been a long standing leading facility of medium to larger bands. It is also noteworthy that this facility does a great job promoting and running a professional venue using both interns, and employees as well as street team members. read more

Music farm is a really fun, intimate venue with great staff. Despite the high heat of the day, the venue was very cool and breezy.

Comparing this place to the Tabernacle in Atlanta, I'll take Music Farm any day. They have the same level of well known artist perform but you have six dollar parking across the street. I don't have to board the MARTA just to end up too early and waiting in line for a decent spot near the stage. Maybe I just miss Charleston. Lol read more

Dear God, if I ever wanted to visit the regret of someones early 20's drunken phase--Music Farm would be the place to visit. It was like a huge frat/sorority party- minus the beer pong. I went to a near sold out show and had the chance to observe some very interesting behavior. In fact, the drunk behavior caught more attention than the actual headliner (whom were great by the way). But anyway, I'm not going to hate on the drunk college kids- we've all been there and done that. It should be noted that the venue is near the College of Charleston probably explaining the reasoning for the Girls Gone Wild show in the audience. The venue is fairly small and sound was pretty good. I always think a venue is clearly defined by the types of acts it brings in as well as the customer base--probably explaining why the 9:30 Club in DC and Orange Peel in Asheville, NC are my favorites. Both are really laid back, book some really great acts, and have customers that are there to hear some great music. Getting to another point---why can't the Music Farm book some better acts? I have to travel to Asheville/Richmond/DC to see some of my favorite bands. The venue is pretty cool...now if they'd only get some good acts in there. read more

My biggest advice is don't go when it's hot. I've never sweat so much in my life! There's no AC and it was jam packed full of people and there were two doors open. That was the only air-flow. Besides that, it was such a COOL venue to see a concert! It's small, intimate, and truly unique as a space. The bar is fully stocked and the crowd always seems fun. Dear God, put some A/C in your venue! I am pretty tolerant to heat, but this is just absurd. The crowd seems to typically skew pretty college aged, which is fine, but just a bit teeny bopper-ish. I think that's is most likely why the bartenders are surly. They are used to dealing with aggressive, blacked out college kids. Makes some sense. If you are a bartender here, or anywhere in the world, don't be a turd when someone asks for soda or water. They are probably the DD, maybe pregnant, or making a conscious choice not to drink. They are likely getting the rest of the idiots in the party home safe. So cut some slack. The 2 stars are for 1) The nice people working the box office during the day and 2) bringing in some alternative music to Charleston. If they get the sound, service, and A/C dialed in then it will be awesome. read more

Great venue. Great shows. The drinks are priced a little high, but the tickets are always priced super low! Usually $20 will get you into any show, no matter how big or small the act is. My only recommendation is that they add a couple of live cameras and large televisions mounted on the ceiling rafters so folks in the back can check out the action even if they are vertically challenged. Keep tabs on their lineup, you wouldn't believe some of the big names that come through such a small place in downtown Charleston. read more
