I love to laugh. I love an underdog. I know I'm a snob who has seen the best in NYC and Chicago and tried to temper my expectations. The performers seem like cool people that are probably the funniest people in the friend group and would be a blast to be around. But I didn't laugh once at this show. First, they chose someone from the audience to come up and answer questions, the answers which were meant to infiltrate the rest of the show. Which is the only reason I would come back here--maybe next time they choose a better or more interesting person? This time they chose an obnoxious drunk guy who used an Arabic slur at the end of his time. To the point one of the cast made a visibly disdainful face. And then he spent the entire hour (right behind me) guffawing at every single thing and repeating jokes over and over to himself aloud. This is a small venue. Bar is cash only. My show was only about 11 bucks, which is more than reasonable, and the only reason I am not outraged or unwilling to try again. They also have even cheaper shows and different themes. read more

For my first Live improv show, I will say that i am pretty impressed. When i got invited to a comedy show, I had already prepared myself for someone telling jokes and potentially roasting random audience members.This was from the case, instead there were 6 performers that night that put on various skits with plenty of crowd engagement. They would ask for suggestions and based of crowd input that is how the scene would go, no easy task, but the performers handled it no problem. I understand why they only want to have to the bar open during intermission, to keep distractions and disruptions down during performances, but drinks and comedy shows kind of go together and if you need a new drink you need a new drink. Overall this was an awesome experience, to be able to get out and switch things up from the normal going out. read more

Wednesdays are the best time to go in my opinion. It's only $5 and the crowd is usually locals and regulars. It's more personal in my opinion. We've now been several times and always leave with belly aches of laughing so much and new inside jokes we take with us for life. Most recently we caught a "take the funny and run" show and were not disappointed. Greg and Brandi have performed at each show we've been to and man are the experts in their field. Being an improve show of course the crowd tries to stump or embarrass the performers but those two never miss a beat and roll with any and everything thrown at them and turn it into pure comedic gold. It's clear they love what they do which makes it all the better. Timmy was the third performer on our recent visit and he also did well but wasn't as seasoned as Greg and Brandi. The theatre does also offer a cash bar for select beer/wine/seltzers/ soda/water and a some snacks. We found the option to buy a round for the performers a unique and fun way to show appreciation for the team. I'd recommend arriving when the doors open if you have a large group or are seat picky. Also shout out to the back of house/ sound/light gent- he adds hilarious commentary and calls out hecklers. Will be back many, many times. read more

Theatre 99 is one of those places I keep planning on writing a review for but, I have so much to say I never know where to start. I have been coming here for years and have even been lucky enough to be a volunteer at the theatre from time to time. It has always been one of my favorite things to do downtown and is always the first thing I think of when I have out of town guests. It's a small improv theatre and typically has shows on Wednesday, Friday, & Saturday nights of each week. If you go on Wednesdays, it's laugh for a lincoln and the shows are only $5. On the weekend's shows are around $10 and if it's a festival like the comedy festival or Piccolo Fringe then expect to pay around $15. Either way, it's probably the most inexpensive and entertainment filled way to spend an evening. Unlike most comedy clubs you may be used to, there is no drink minimum and the beer and wine is actually really cheap. Make sure to bring cash though... no credit cards allowed jerks (they do have an atm though)! I have never left here without having some great laughs. Some shows are better than others but one thing is that they are always different. The people here are amazing too. From the company members, to the employees, to the owners, they all work very hard to continue providing entertainment at Charleston's only comedy club week after week. $5 for an improv show? Yes! It was good value for money. The first performers, before the intermission, were okay. Some of them were very funny, whereas some seemed like students that were just starting out in improv. The two ladies after the intermission seemed very experienced and were definitely funny. My only complaint is that the website says the show is PG-13. However, with the ridiculous amount of times the performers used the f-word, it was definitely rated R. read more

I need to come here more often. How have I lived in Charleston for so long, and this is only my first visit here? I bought tickets for the Stand Up Science show this past Saturday night, and we made our way downtown for some shenanigans. The theatre is located above the bicycle shop that has the orange VW bug parked out front, and you have to enter from the stairs in the back. Do not park in this parking lot or you will be towed. Plenty of parking on George St. We were welcomed to the theatre at the top of the stairs, and our names were on the list (nice!) which was good because I had only received my confirmation email regarding the ticket purchase. Seating is first come first serve, so get there at least 30 minutes early. There is a cash (or check) bar that serves beer, wine, and snacks. The seats were comfortable and there was plenty of leg room (tall guy here). The theatre is very cozy and the lighting and sound was perfect. We all enjoyed the show very much, and I can't wait to come back again and see another one some day. read more

Really loved Theatre 99! A group of coworkers and I stopped by 2 weeks ago for a happy hour event to support two of our fellow coworkers who were performing in an improv class/show. It was such a great time! They have a small bar that serves wine and beer and the theater itself is a good size! I've never regretted spending an evening watching The Have Nots perform some improv comedy! It's always a good time. Tickets are $5 on Wednesdays but $10-12.50 other nights. It's cash only but they have an ATM available when you walk in. Definitely grab some beer or wine at the bar before the show. The best performances are of course the ones with the most audience participation but again, they never disappoint. My favorite act is the one where they take people's cell phones and are only allowed to say dialogue from sent/received text messages. You never know what they're gonna find (and you'll really question some people's choice to volunteer...whoa). The only negative (as always with downtown) is parking but they do have a small lot if you're super lucky. The skits were mostly funny. The few that weren't didn't matter because it was only $5. The theater itself is old, but I like it. It gives that kind of retro feel. The painting on the stage isn't a vagina, but is Elvis' suit. I was asked what I thought of the Elvis and I had no idea what the guy was asking. When he said the painting, I told him what I thought it was. He said he thought that too at first, but there is a face of Elvis off to the right. Either way, it was kind of funny. Pleasantly surprised by this well hidden comedy club behind the bike shop on Meeting Street. It is an intimate setting with cheap drinks and food and really great fun comedy for all ages. There are many stand up and improv shows to choose from and the comics are very engaged with the audience. Prices range from $5 to $10 depending on the night. Another new favorite of mine in Charleston.. I actually found this place on a random blog when we were looking for things to do.. how happy am I that we ended up being in town on the day they had a show! The theater staff were so inviting and the theater itself reminded me of a place I visited in Chicago. They also were following pretty strict guidelines for COVID so we felt safe. Seat spacing was pre-set and everyone kept masks on during the show. My husband and I were laughing the entire time. Knowing that improv can be hit or miss we both didn't know what to expect but even though some bits didn't make a ton of sense.. it made it all that much more funny. I went for the first time last night and it seemed like I was walking to a Halloween house. You go down a small alley and then have to climb rackety stairs and open a big black door for you to get your comedy. Once you have concurred findings the place, it's laughter from then on. They have a bar with bottled beer, wine and snacks like chips candies and moon pies. It's very reasonable at 2 bucks for pbr, 3 for your classic light beers and 4.50 for a bunch of the local beers like Westbrook and holy city. For 12 bucks for my ticket, I def got good use. 6 of their 15 employees improv at a time. Improv has similar skits but it reminded me of second city. I will 100% be going back and bringing family and friends that come in. PS they hear dildo, porn and all those inappropriate things you wanna yell all the time. read more

So much fun in this cozy little venue. I came to town to visit my sister and she recommended that us and our parents check out an improv show at this theater and we had a blast. Venue: I would have gotten so lost trying to find this venue if I had to navigate. You can pre order your tickets to shows, which I recommend, especially on weekends because the show I went to sold out. The theater is so cool, every seat is a great seat, but get there early if you want to be able to sit with your group! Drinks: The bar is opened before the show and during intermission. Another reason to get here early! They have great craft beers available at reasonable prices and wine and bottles of wine, whatever you're in the mood for. Humor: The show was hilarious. I wish had these skills. The show was perfectly interactive, you get to yell out ideas when needed, or volunteer to go on stage. On a budget? Want to do something besides see a movie? Then come to Theater 99 for some good improv! We were visiting Charleston for a few days and this place came by recommendation from our Airbnb host and one of our waiters from the previous day. Some nights are free and some nights are $5 per person which is still an awesome deal. We came on a night that was a free improv show and it was first come first seat. Me and my gf have never been to improv show before so i am not sure what our expectations were, if any, for me at least. Please come to theater 99 for their improv because it was actually a pretty good show and some stand up comedy! If you're wondering what kind of a crowd is attracted to improv, there was a good mixture of some young professionals but there were also some older folks as well. The entire show lasted a little more than 1.5 hours, and had about 8 or more different pairs/group performances. Some were brand new to improv and some were a little more experienced. I think they actually stated that they just hit 99 members (ironically) so every night is bound to be different and have new performers. Parking is very limited, especially their lot in the back (about 7 cars max). Make sure to come early to grab good seats because that is limited to about 40 spots or so and there may be some standing room but i am not sure. There is also an intermission in the middle and a refreshment bar for all of those that need some fizzy. read more

Great little community theatre! This is an improv theatre with an on-site troupe along with many traveling headliners. They do a Laugh for a Lincoln special on Wednesday nights at certain times of the year, along with other specials, so keep an eye out and get on their email list. I think they gear these specials toward the college students who live nearby. Promoting the arts is so important, but it can be expensive. They really try to keep costs down for their patrons and I appreciate it. Catch The Have Nots! during the Spoleto Festival, or catch a show during the Comedy Festival. They have normally scheduled shows throughout the year, too. Parking is a bust, as they are located upstairs from a bicycle shop and the small lot is not available for the theatre. It's a little away from the main downtown scene, so street parking is usually easy to find, or there are garages within a few blocks. If you need a laugh and want to see some good performing arts live, this is the place for you! read more

Went to see the improv performance at Theatre 99 while family was visiting. Not sure if we just came on a bad night, or maybe all the great reviews I read were just written after lots and lots of alcohol, but I struggled to even give three stars. The first act of three, which consisted of about eight performers, was very poor; maybe two or three laughs over 15-20 min. Many of the "comedians" had better not quit their day jobs. The second act, which was just two performers, was better, but not great. Of course the bar was set pretty low by act one. We didn't wait for the third act, so maybe it redeemed the show....guess we'll never know. At least it only cost $5 each, plus parking fees. read more

This is by far my favourite place in Charleston. The actors are great and everyone always has a great time. Probably the most fun that you can have in this town. I always make sure to get out there at least once each time I'm in Charleston, and more if I can. Having lived in Charlotte and now Indianapolis, I must say the improv in Charleston ranks at the top of the list.
