I went to Music Go Round after several unsatisfying trips to the big box guitar centers. I am returning to playing after many years so I can play along with my grandchildren like I did for my kids. I wanted to buy a guitar but have some problems with my shoulder and needed help selecting a size and style I could use comfortably. I got no help from the big box stores. I walked into Music Go Round and was immediately greeted by a friendly guy named Jeff. I explained my problem and Jeff showed me a variety of styles and sizes. When he saw how uncomfortable I was, he showed me how to hold the guitar like I was playing classical and it was a revelation. It took all the pressure off my shoulder. He brought me a variety of guitars without trying to upsell at all and I landed on a beautiful Alvarez Parlor size with all Mahagony top, sides and bottom. This guitar new at Guitar stores is selling for $1,100. I bought this slightly used guitar for 1/3 that cost. And, to top it off, the store has a wonderful dog walking around. So, if you want personal service, no pressure sales, and a great bargain on a great guitar--I would stop here. At least that was my experience. read more

I have had hit or miss experiences with this place. They have a great variety of guitars most of the time but the staff is sometimes sort of aloof. Perhaps they don't even realize it. I can't say they actively discourage me in any way. It's just that some of them have a hard time feigning interest. Maybe I'm just not a cool person. I dunno. Some other places have no trouble treating me like I matter, so perhaps it isn't just me. Perhaps I have been encountering an employee who doesn't like his job. Regardless, I keep coming in to see their incredibly good, constantly-rotating inventory. One time, I even sold an amp for them just by being myself, playing some pretty tunes on a nice little setup. A nice older gentleman walked up and complimented the sound I was getting then politely asked if he could buy the amp. We had a wonderful talk and then he bought it while I walked out the door. That made me feel GOOD. That experience has sustained me over a few of the more negative experiences with aforementioned aloof employee. read more

I was having issues with the volume on my Fender Jazz Bass, so I took it into the shop. Christian joined me to discuss my bass and the issues I was having. Christian walked me through some of the reasons for why I was experiencing different volume levels on the strings. He loosened, rattled, and then tightened the flat wound strings and just that created a brighter sound and with more punch. Christian described his recommended adjustments to the saddle, to the height of the pick-ups, and observed the neck, which didn't need an adjustment. He advised me that my strings were in good shape and recommended I not change them. I left the bass with Christian and it he set it up in a few hours. It wasn't until I plugged the bass in that I realized how much better it played. The action was lower, the sound was even across all the strings, and it was just more fun to play. A great store, a great collection Of imstruments at very decent prices Their guitar tech Christian is very knowledgeable and helpful. Only annoying thing I can report as I recently went in to buy a foot switch for a new amplifier and the salesman would not sell me one, He told me I should bring my 75 pound amplifier in there and try some out. It's not very complicated it's just a single action footswitch and yet he wouldn't sell me one without my amplifier being there. I told them well I will buy one and I will return it if it's not the right 1. No He didn't want to do it. So I went down the street to Guitar Center or they like did research for maybe 30 seconds and sold me the foot switch I needed. I just think in this era of all these online music stores to turn away a sure sale is not very intelligent read more

The store owner and the employees have no integrity, horrible business ethics, and are not with wasting time on. They promised one thing, and then basically in so many words told me they'd make more money to be go back on their word and basically give me the shaft. When GC rejected my 1980's US made Fender amp (for no particular reason), I took it to Music Go Round. They gave me an offer in 10 minutes. Of course, the offer won't be as good as selling to a private party, but I was just looking to thin my collection. They have a fairly large used guitar collection. They have an impressive used amp collection as well. Most guitars are low to mid end, so if you're not looking to spend tons of money and don't want to deal with Craigslist, this store could be a great option. However, you need to examine carefully as some guitars have dents, repairs, etc. I happened to find a really nice Squier strat by chance, which I bought. It plays nicer than my vintage US strat. Staff was courteous and helpful; it's a laid back environment. read more

Loved the selection and variety of guitars that were in stock during my couple visits to the store. Staff were approachable and didn't have that arrogant and annoying "I'm better than you, so why are you asking me all these inane questions complex" Instead, all staff were very down to earth, and allowed space and ample time to put several instruments through your sampling needs. Unfortunately, two of the major items I purchased ended up not being a fit for my collection. One of the items was a used amplifier that wasn't quite punching through on any of the modeling options. However, when I correctly attached the correct foot switch (not included with my original purchase) it did a world of difference in improvement in tone, volume and punch. The staff were very understanding and didn't question my request to return for a full refund and even extended their 7-day trial period -+1 day to accommodate my schedule. Prices were generally in-line (or cheaper in a few cases) with competitive outlets online and sticks &bricks. I would love it if this store was closer to my home but I think it worth the drive to Natick if you're the type that likes to see, try and get a feel for your next musical investment. This place is a hit or miss. You can sometimes find great amps and maybe a guitar but nothing over the top. Plenty of effects pedals and accessories. I noticed most used things were priced a high for what they were, pawn shop prices. Now as far as the employees... eh. Some you have to watch out for. Think they're big shots in a small music store. Not the most friendly. Vic the owner is a douche bag, cusses and threatens people on the phone so be aware. Not exactly who you wanna deal with. Big baby if he doesnt like what you have to say. None could make eye contact as I asked for rosin. I was told they had rosin on the counter. Yes - the cheapest rosin that only a beginner string student uses, the stuff that comes free with your $20 violin rental. After getting screwed around by the Natick, MA store for an online purchase of a bass amp, I decided to look at the online reviews of this store and MGR overall. Shockingly, I found much more 1 star bad reviews than I had even expected. These guys are an absolute joke and I totally believe all the bad stories now because they actually pulled the same crap with me. They wasted no time in processing my payment for the purchase of the amp ($299.00 plus $60.00 UPS ground shipping. Then I get like 3 calls from someone at the store over the weekend making sure that I want the amp (MIND YOU, AFTER I ALREADY PAID IN FULL). I was assured that the amp was going to be packed over the weekend and shipped out Monday morning. Then I get this email: Dear Mr. Robin, Rob Hammerton here, from Music Go Round Boston's shipping department. I have packed the Ampeg BA500 Combo which you ordered this weekend ... one small wrinkle: our sales staff charged you $60 for shipping, and we are discovering that UPS would like about $170 to ship this item. My son and I went here for the first time. We both are avid beginning guitarists. We loved the place, Big airy and lots of guitars, ukelleles and drums to play. We liked that we could try anything, there were plenty of stools and lots of staff around. We liked seeing families coming in and all sorts of musicians popping in. I liked their used amps too. We were asked if we needed help 3 times. I was even handed a pick to play. I'm going to go back. I did read reviews and respect other reviewers. The first time I went there there was a very nice dude who let me play a 1965 Jazzmaster. 10/10 would recommend that guy. This time there was a guy who refused to let me play a 1962 Jazz Bass. Great new music store in my hometown of Natick. Great to see something with a little more character than Guitar Center here in town. 95% used gear. Which, if you ask me, is what you want. No need to buy new when you're grabbing a new axe or drumset or whatevah. Unless you just have to have the new Slash Appetite model Les Paul for a mere $2600. Instruments are like cars, you're better off buying used. Anyways, great selection of guitars. Cool, harder to find 60's style surf machines with lots of knobs and switches, the standard Telecasters and Stratocasters....they're lacking a bit for Gibsons...just saw one LP Studio and one SG with odd colors but the prices were about right. Plenty of amps, tube, solid state, bass amps....decent amount of basses too. Drummers, no high end shiz like DW kits or anything, but a must-visit if you're in the market for a cymbal or 2. They had some very reasonably priced Mapex and Sonor kits. Again, not the top of the line stuff, but good intermediate kits for $4-500. Also unique outside stores that specialize in the orchestral/band instruments - they have some brass and woodwind, plus cellos and upright basses. Sick. Not to mention one of the cooler touches - a couch to sit on to try out axes. dope! pass the doobie. Friendly and non-pushy staff. Feels like a mom and pop but it's actually a chain with decent reach here in the USA. Will definitely be back to see their changing inventory. I got 3 great quality pedals for a ridiculous price. Seriously, if you're looking for like-new gear then you';; have a tough time finding better prices. Guitar selection obviously isn't as big as GC, but every guitar looks restored-like-new and well-cared for. No problems here. The owner, Phil, was a great guy who really knew his stuff. He was open to conversation, very friendly, and even kept the register open past closing time so I could make the right decisions without feeling rushed. Shout out to the floor associate Anthony who worked that night - awesome knowledge, accommodation for the customer, and enthusiasm. He lugged a huge Marshall amp back to a practice room so I could test the pedals! Then set me up with patch cables, etc, without being pushy. Love that kid. If I need to sell some gear back, I would come here first. If I needed to buy some new-to-me gear, I'd come here first. read more

My boyfriend called about a week ago to ask about a Tacoma acoustic guitar that they had in stock. This is a guitar that is fairly rare, as Tacoma is no longer is business. He was looking for a Tacoma to replace the one that Fedex broke. When asked if they could hold this guitar, the staff said they would hold it for him until he could get there. My boyfriend was assured by the staff at this place that the guitar would be held. We live 90 minutes away, so it had to wait until Saturday. He arrived at this place around 1pm, only to find out it had been sold out from under him about an hour before he got there. The staff said, since the person who bought the guitar brought in a bunch of gear to trade, and since people always say they are going to pick up a hold but often they dont, they decided to sell it to the other guy. Ive worked in customer service for almost 30yrs in many different capacities. If you tell a customer you are going to hold a product, YOU HOLD IT!! If there is another interested party, then you call the person its being held for! You dont just sell it out from under them!! How unprofessional! The manager offered a $75 store credit. Whoopie. My boyfriend drove over 3 hours, round trip, plus tolls and wasted time. He spoke to 3 different people and told them how much he wanted that specific guitar. It cannot be found anywhere now. I recommend staying far away from this business. They lied to him (by saying they would hold the guitar), and clearly engage in lousy customer service. We know a lot of local musicians, and I would tell them all to avoid this unprofessional, incompetant company. read more

I love Music Go Round. I've shopped at a couple different locations and they consistently have friendly, helpful staff. What I love most is the selection. And I don't mean that they have everything you could ever want; in fact I find massive music stores to be kind of overwhelming and unproductive when shopping for gear (if you want that, check out this kewl website eBay.com and have fun going down the wormhole). They have a good amount of mid-level gear, with some beginners stuff and some higher end lines as well. Mostly they carry a lot of "work-horse" gear, stuff that you can take to gigs that will hold up over time. I have bought a few amps from them. I am a huge Peavey fan and MGR carries a generous collection of them. The pricing is SPOT ON for what you should expect at a (mostly) used music store. If you go on Craigslist you might be able to get an insane deal on some 'old SYMBOLS" or a 'base guitar'. You won't find any symbols or bases at MGR. But you'll find a used pair of Zildjian new beats for $150-$200. Or you'll find a cheap mexi Fender bass for somewhere between $200 and $300. Respectable and honest. They are fair with trade-ins as well, taking most things that aren't total crap. I've sold a bit of stuff to them over the years and the only thing they wouldn't take are some no-name drums that I had repainted... that seems totally fair. read more

I am a bit surprised by some of the negative reviews in Yelp as my experience was excellent. I went there today to buy a drum set for my 11 year old daughter. It took me about 10 minutes to get someone's attention as they were super busy with last minute Christmas shoppers. Once someone came to help me, the experience was excellent. They had 4-5 complete / almost complete drum sets to choose from, plus many single pieces. The guy patiently explained the different things to me, and even talked to my wife via FaceTime. In today's market, MGR is your best source for used instruments. The ability to try things out before buying is crucial, and difficult to do with CL and the like. MGR also offers a knowledgeable staff of cool people. I recently went into the store to buy a guitar that looked good on paper -- on CL or eBay, I would have just bought it -- and found I just didn't like it..The manager of the store pointed me at another guitar (a model that wasn't on my radar) and suggested I try it... And I went home with it at a very fair price! I've also traded in many items to the store. As long as you understand how it works -- they'll give you 1/2 of what they can get for the item -- they're fair enough, and make the experience very pleasant. read more

ALL THE PAIN WITH NONE OF THE GAIN.... This is in reference to the Natick MA 01760 location... I emailed this "store,more like a pawn shop"no less than four times.. Calls just received voicemail and when I called and actually reached someone the manager named "vick" was more concerned about denying that i had emailed them at all rather than to send the photos I asked for or take even 20 seconds to make sure he had the information I wanted.. So he wasn't concerned about not receiving the emails as in wanting to get the information to me but more to be defensive and deny emails had even been sent... However.. He couldn't deny that i had called as he backed off of that but he sent zero photos ,and had hung up on me because he said he was busy,and when he finally ACKNOWLEDGED THAT HE HAD THE KIT",chose to do nothing to right the stores complete lack of decent costomer service or much else.. Did i mention I had emailed them three times and called four times previously? Vick didn't speak to me for even 2 minutes... He could've cared less.. He must own a goldmine as taking care of my simple requests meant nothing.. He couldn't bother to give me 4 minutes not to mention that our time on the phone was spent with him just questioning if the drum kit was even in his store or if I had called the right store? Really? Well Vick you really pissed me off with your pawn shop attitude.. I didn't get one question answered about the drum set... But..I will seek out the music go round corp contact to discuss how they make money since Vick did not want mine obviously... He made guitar center look like pure nirvana. I had thought I wanted a drum set and I could buy one there and get some solid attention in terms of costumer service but no.. And at the end of the day if you can't get basic solid service,photos of the gear you ask for or details of the gear because the manager is busy defensively questioning if the gear is even in there store or if you emailed them at all ,well... I think that tells you everything you need to know and exactly what other music chain deserves your hard earned cash rather than this hot mess of a store.. And when you do go to guitar center nested..tell them"Vick sent me"... My Dad was a musician. Sadly when he passed, I received a lot of his equipment. Over the years I kept contemplating whether or not to sell his prized Fender amp from the 60's. I kept the things that meant the most to me like his guitar, but had never really used the amp. When I brought it to Music Go Round, the men who helped me were not only very knowledgeable about the amplifier, but handled the transaction with a lot of care and sentiment, after hearing how much this meant to my late Father. Different people want different things out of a music store. And if you're like me, you'll love this place. If you want to look at a wall full of brand new Fenders and Gibsons, go to Guitar Center. If you want to encounter something unexpected, go to Music Go Round. The selection is interesting and always changing. I don't think they have any brand new guitars, but I might be mistaken about that. But really, there's almost no reason to get a brand new guitar. And you'll see stuff here that you'll never see at big chains. Like a Harmony Rocket. Or some weird Vox clone. Or several Dan Electros. Or maybe a super cheap beater to take apart and tinker with. I've bought guitars, amps, a bass and an electric organ from them. Each item is still going strong. I traded in a guitar and I was very happy with the price they gave me. I even returned a guitar I bought from them and they didn't give me a hard time. Nothing was wrong with the guitar--it just wasn't the right one for me. The staff has always been super friendly and helpful. I can be a bit bashful playing at guitar stores, but these guys never give off that cooler-than-you vibe. If you're looking for a very specific item, you might have trouble finding it here. But if you're an opportunistic shopper like myself, this place is just awesome. read more

My experience in the store has been poor, which is too bad because with a little effort, it could have been 5 stars. I have purchased a guitar, and an amp from the store, as well as, brought items for trade-in. In general, I find their used guitars in poor shape and very over-priced. The amount they are willing to offer for trade-in's is extremely low. Sell it yourself on Craigslist. Some of the staff is very friendly, but the owner is not. I could have been a frequent customer, but will not make the effort to go back. I think their target is the poor kid who doesn't know accurate prices. read more

Nice people here. As a drummer I found the selection lack luster for drums with a decent supply of cymbals. I didn't enjoy the drums being kind of stacked right at the front door for the most part. A couple of nice deals on entry level stuff though, so I might return if my kids ever show more interest. The store is clean and well organized with a wall of guitars. I think the prices are pretty competitive as well. I hope they do well enough to grow into a larger store. read more

I ordered a cymbal over the phone from these guys. I paid for it to be shipped to California. They said, "No problem, it will go out today." That was a Thursday. I called back Friday because I didn't get a confirmation email or a receipt for my purchase. The next person I talked to said, "Oh yeah, it's still here. It'll definitely go out today. Sometimes it can take 3-4 days to ship something." ??????? Ok. It's now Monday. I call again because I still don't have any confirmation my item was shipped. "I'm not sure what happened. It should have already gone out. Do you still want the cymbal? It will go out today." Do I still want the cymbal????
