Great experience! As soon as we got in touch with Jack, we knew the AV for our wedding was not going to be a concern. We knew we just needed something simple and Jack was incredibly helpful in helping us figure out the best option. We rented a speaker system for our wedding and Jack made that whole process extremely easy. The system worked great. We hired DJ Stoney for our wedding back in June 2019 and he was so crucial to the success of our wedding! One of the most important things we wanted out of our wedding was that it was fun - and that was MORE than satisfied with Stoney's charm and emcee skills and how he kept the atmosphere of the night upbeat and enjoyable. Weeks after the wedding, we repeatedly heard from guests complimenting Stoney and expressing how much fun they had. Leading up to the wedding, Jack was actually our main point of contact - believe he's the owner of Music Now. For music preferences we mainly communicated with Jack, and he had us fill out the questionnaire describing our style and any strict do-not-plays. That questionnaire was then passed on to Stoney, who had a check-in call with us one week before the wedding to make sure we were on the same page. We retained Music Now DJ Services to provide the DJ services for our wedding held at the Seymour Marine Discovery Center in June 2019. We worked with the Owner, Jack Crawford, and DeAndre James, the DJ who ran the wedding day event. Music Now provided all of the equipment needed. And by working with Jack in advance, we were prepared with the customized playlist we wanted to create the various moods we wanted throughout each part of the special event. DJ DeAndre responded immediately with all live adjustments requested, and his DJ skills were matched with a great attitude and friendliness that several guests commented on. We hired Music Now DJ's for our wedding in Carmel Valley and I can't say enough good things about our experience. A few weeks before the event they contacted us and we submitted our play list and all our special little requests. On game day the owner himself, Jack, arrived with his crew nice and really put together a genuinely impressive performance. We had Music Now DJ at our wedding at the Chaminade in Santa Cruz. Overall we had a very pleasant experience with them but there were some snags along the way. There was a lot of communication back and forth prior to the event. We felt they were pretty well organized and they were very responsive to our many concerns. Due to some last minute out of control events, Jack our coordinator and DJ told us he was unable to work our event a couple weeks before our wedding. We eventually found a DJ in the company we thought that would work for us, Jessica. Jack made us feel like he was very concerned with making our day perfect which we appreciated a lot. On the day Jessica showed up on time, was professional and very nice. However there were several glitches that occurred we felt Jessica was not in command of. Examples include music not playing at certain times, misplaying our dual first/second song order request, and most importantly mispronouncing the bride and groom's last name upon entry to the reception. Most people did not notice the details but of course we did. As I said the overall experience was generally that there was an amazing dance party and that was the main concern. In that effect they did very well. We even requested an extra half hour of music to keep the party going. Music Now DJ is not without faults but they do try very hard to make your event a pleasant one. read more

Woohoo! As good as it gets! Let me first say that I was directed to Music Now by 2 recently married friends, 1 past high school friend, my mother's entire stitching group (different generation), and another 2 college friends I knew from UCSC's student activities office. After talking with a total of 11 friends who have used Jack and his crew before, price checking every DJ in the Central Coast and Bay area, and scouring the internet for SANE reviews from couples who at least appear to be level headed online (there are always those impossible-to-please Brideszillas out there), I booked Music Now for the following reasons: #1) they have seriously competitive prices for the SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT JOB DURING A WEDDING! #2) Was told by several Dominican Hospital nurses (family friends) that they had thankfully just used Music Now at their wedding - and had been told by ALL of their guests what a blast THEIR wedding was in particular because of the DJ that they had hired! #3) they were excellent communicators - and never were difficult to reach or disappearing at the most inopportune time (don't all event planners know EXACTLY what I am talking about?!). #4) they bent over backwards to find my groom's most random request ever: an instrumental version of a very inappropriate song from decades ago. He was insistent that the guys walk out to this song (think "Akinyele"). Even though it was embarrassing for me to ask, Andre and Jack never let a hint of awkwardness pass between us all. That is what I mean when I say ",These guys are MASTERS at what they do!" Weird request? They got you. Awkward family moment? Crisis averted by your Music Now DJ. Scared of a lull in the day's events? NOT GOING TO HAPPEN WITH MUSIC NOW! They are already 10 steps ahead of you. Music Now served as a full Master of Ceremonies during our event; regardless of whether you have a wedding planner or not, they are the ONLY ones conducting the entire ebb and flow of the wedding. My wedding planner didn't even make it to dessert before she was out the door. But our Music Now DJ Andre was right there with us, directing everything from set up until the last guest left. I was told as a newly engaged but budget conscious gal that there are always going to be things that go wrong the day of. BUT there are really only 2 rules you have to follow when holding the best wedding ever: #1) Hire your favorite photographer - do not dare skimp on those lasting memories you will still have when you are 90 #2) HIRE THE BEST DJ!!! There is no ipod or fun loving third cousin who "DJs on the side" that can replace the experience, tenacity, and seamless transitions of someone directing every single element of your wedding day; start to finish. Music Now DJs were amazing at my wedding! Seriously, my only regret is not hiring them for longer! They were so accommodating and really understood the type of music I wanted to play. I got so many compliments about how fantastic the DJ was, and really I can't think of a single thing they could have done for it to be more perfect. They were so friendly toward everyone, played to the feeling of the room, got everyone dancing, and never missed a beat. Everything from the music for our entrance, first dance, daddy/daughter dance, mother/son dance, the special song for my mother, and the TWO farewell songs (I couldn't decide, so he played both and it worked SO well) were just perfect. I wish I could go back in time and tell myself "book them for longer, trust me" because I just can't get over how perfect it was. I cannot say enough good things about Jack and our wedding day DJ Ryan. Jack was super helpful and very willing to meet, email and chat about what we needed. They offer very competitive prices and we were also about to get a discount for booking near the date of the local Bridal Expo! What an awesome surprise! I met our DJ Ryan shortly before our wedding and was so happy with him. Jack did an awesome job pairing us with him. Ryan and Jack had some great ideas and walked through all of the 'important' songs with me. When deciding on the song my fiance and I would walk down the aisle to (after being married!), Ryan and I got to chatting about my Lord of the Rings loving fiance. Turns out, Ryan is a total inner nerd, too and was sooo excited to help come up with the perfect song. I'm much less into LOTR so I was feeling a little skeptical about walking down to anything LOTR. Long story short, Ryan compiled a version of the Shire song for us to walk down to! The nerds in attendance loved it and everyone else just thought it was a pretty and cheerful song!! Thank you so much for that, Ryan! I was also feeling kind of worried about our crowd getting their groove on but Ryan was incredible about picking the right songs and getting everyone dancing! We had so much apprehension after our initial meeting with the DJ and unfortunately all our worries were multiplied during the wedding reception. Growing up in Santa Cruz Music Now would always DJ our school dance and even though it wasn't my favorite I understood they were trying to play to a diverse crowd. We began by filling out a questionairre about what type of service we were expecting. It included a question about the DJ being allowed to eat along with our attire and our choice of songs. We asked the DJ not to eat in the questionairre because its a job we were paying him for a certain amount of time to work for us. It was less than six hours so he could eat before and afterwards and we wouldn't have a DJ chomping down on chicken wings as he called out songs. He immediately had a problem with us stating on our questionairre that we didn't want him to spend the time we were paying him to be eating. After that he asked us about the type of songs we wanted to play. I told him I liked folksy songs similar to Mumford and Sons, a group that we had as our first dance song, we also stated that we really enjoyed '80s music like New Wave. His response was to ask us if we liked LMFAO then. I turned to my fiancee and explained the band he had suggested and kinda laughed with her at how horrible a suggestion this was. Little did I know that after making fun of the song and fully stating that was the exact opposite of music we would want he would play that exact song. He asked about our attire and I explained to him that I would wear a morning suit. He had never heard of it so I told him it was day formal wear equivalent to a white bow tie affair. If you ever see pictures of the English royals at horse races you know what I was wearing. He came in a suit that looks to have been entirely purchased in a Sears clearance bin. All black would have been completely fine or if he wanted to properly match the attire a tuxedo would have been proper. This suit was an affront to what I had mentioned. After we mailed in our song request form and intimated what type of music we like; Music Now called us to generally imply they don't have any of the music we requested. For a DJ service that brags about how many songs they have I was surprised they had huge disparities in the type of music they own. The day of the reception, after our wedding, I went ahead and shrugged off his lame jokes and inability to change introductions from what was stated on the chart. I even tried to not pay attention to the horrible selections they have listed for the Father/Daughter dance and Mother/Groom dance. After we received our food I took the opportunity to use the restroom and the DJ quickly walked over to my wife and told her that the caterer had said it was ok for him to eat so he just wanted to get the ok from her. She did not say yes. She told him to find me, the husband, and ask me. He never found me nor did it seem he attempted to and the next time I saw him he was sitting down at the guest tables and eating while he had some background music playing. It would have been totally fine if he had wanted to eat the food I paid for after the wedding reception had completed about two hours later but he chose to not listen to my wife and grab a plate for himself and ate at the tables while the guests ate as well. It took a level of audacity and selfishness to have done this that I cannot fathom. For the Father/Bride dance and the Mother/Groom dance he didn't observe the cues both myself and my wife's father tried to give him to transition music or invite people onto the dance floor. My wife's father has bad knees from his time in the U.S. Army and he attempted to get the attention of the DJ while he was dancing because he was in so much pain but the DJ did not pay attention. After the traditional dances ended the DJ played one warm up song that everyone tried to put in a good effort and jumped on the dance floor. The DJ then played the LMFAO song previously mentioned and it was like throwing a grenade on the dance floor. Something that would become a habit for the DJ. Immediately, every single guest left the dance floor but the DJ continued to play the same song until completion. We had told him what to play because we knew our guests. After playing no '80s music and continuing to play music no one wanted to hear he came and asked about my feelings about the songs. I asked him if he had our request list and his answer was unintelligible. I suspect he didn't even bother to bring it, otherwise he might have thrown me a bone and played a song or two off it. The DJ did play requests. That was not the issue. The issue was that after each request he would play something entirely inappropriate to our guests that struck us as out of touch. We had no guest under twenty six yet all we heard was the worst of the newest pop culture songs. Horrible service. read more

We used Music Now just this past weekend for our wedding: PROS: 1. Our DJ did an amazing job with the ceremony music. He did a nice job timing the songs just right and did a nice job managing the volume of the ourdoor speakers throughout the ceremony. 2. Our DJ did a nice job with speaker placement and set up - our venue had many different areas which needed to be covered so that announcements could be heard, and he did this flawlessly. 3. We actually got a lot of compliments about our DJ from our guests 4. Our DJ did a nice job introducing my husband and I into the reception after we were done with pictures. 5. Our DJ, once he calmed down enough to do so, was apologetic of his mistakes. 6. He made some pretty large mistakes, but our guests did not know, only we did. CONS: 1. We had a detail meeting with our DJ specifically for the purpose of going over musical taste and other details for the wedding... during this meeting my husband I expressed a desire to have our first dance in a very specific way. We had 2 versions of the same song (one slow, one fast) -- our plan was to start slow for 1 min 30 seconds, then to have our parents invited to the dance floor for another 1 min 30 seconds, and finally to have the music bumped up and the wedding part called onto the dance floor. In our detail meeting, we explained this to the DJ several times, but he seemed not to be taking it in and he seemed not to like the idea. I guess in the "DJ world", going from that slow to that fast is too jarring for people. In our meeting he kept saying "Well, I've been doing this for 20+ years, so I know best" and I kept saying, "I hear you, but THIS IS WHAT WE WANT". He finally agreed to do it the way we wanted... but then completely messed it up when it came down to the moment of our first dance. We had to yell to him during our first dance to remind him to invite our parents onto the dance floor and he responded "what? no, not yet" and we were like "um YES! do it". ...it just ended up being one of those moments where we had our hearts set on it being a certain way and it just did not end up that way. We ended up having the SUPER AWKWARD 4 minute long first dance followed by the same song repeated again with the wedding party. It really should have been part of the first song and then the second song. This first dance was something we really wanted and was really special to us. It was ruined. 2. During our first dance, when we were trying to get our DJs attention, he was not even paying attention, it took us like 10-15 seconds to get him to notice us waving and yelling at him to invite our parents onto the dance floor. 3. The DJ forgot to have us give a small speech at the end of all the speeches, as we discussed in the detail meeting... and we also forgot... but it was our wedding day! In the flow of the event, it is not our responsibility to remember, he should just say "And now the bride and groom will say a few words". 4. I asked my father to share with the DJ that I was feeling frustrated, and upon hearing that the DJ came up to me while we were trying to fill out our marriage license and started BLAMING ME FOR ALL HIS MISTAKES. Now--- this is the thing that realllllllly got me going and this is the reason for the 2 star review--- our DJ's handling of this situation was so incredibly unprofessional, I can hardly stand it and I started crying during our reception. He came walking up to me on the defensive saying "Um you didn't tell me you wanted to speak after all the speeches" "I've been doing this 20+ years, this is not my first time around the rodeo, I didn't write that down so we didn't talk about it" ...I mean, it was ridiculous. He was super egotistical!! I asked him to leave me alone and not discuss it now (IN THE MIDDLE OF THE EVENT/RECEPTION) as I was signing my marriage license and feeling very frustrated with him for messing up our first dance as well.... Oh my gosh do I regret saying that because he became MORE reactive and accusatory toward me. I had to ask him several times to stop. He then stormed off and did his thing for a few minutes before coming back again to apologize for being so reactive... While I appreciate his apologies, I felt that he should not have acted in such a way to begin with as he is there in a professional capacity. He also accused me of being a "different kind of bride" ...whatever that means... But it felt like he was justifying his mistakes with the first dance and blaming me for asking for something that was not in line with the stereotypical norm that he is used to doing. But again, we went over all the detail in the meeting! 5. He made a super inappropriate comment about our friend/officiant (he apologized for that after the fact too... but still...) 6. For the remainder of the event, he would not let anything go and kept coming up to us when we were talking to guests and profusely apologizing! appreciated the intent, but not the time.. wait until after the wedding read more

Before you read further, please know that the owner of Music Now has been responsive to concerns raised by my wife and myself and changes are likely on the way. This review many not reflect the current state of things at Music Now. Our first warning sign should have been the positively antique modes of communication. There is an e-mail address but for most communications and the actual song request sheet Music Now sent us a paper list through US mail. They insisted that the list of song requests be faxed back; e-mail not an option. That is sort of weird but the real problem came in when they completely refused to send a new list when we requested it; my fiancée/wife and I had made something of a mess of the original sheet (corrections, changes, etc) and it would have been in the Music Now's interest to have a cleaner working document. But they refused. They actively refused a simple request for a few cents postage. Red flag number one. My fiancée/wife had numerous conversations with the owner of Music Now about what we wanted to have played. Some of this was not available on their standard lists and there seemed to be some problems with the staff locating Youtube videos and/or making MP3 files for the purpose of expanding their song repertoire. My brother in law was able to do this in a minute or less and was fortunately interfacing with the DJ on the day of the event. Unfortunately my brother-in-law had to not only supply the music we wanted but to convince the DJ (John) that plugging an iPod into his mixing set-up would not "hurt" (actual words) his equipment. I understand that not everyone is technically savvy but a man who plays music at weddings should be able utilize modern music equipment. I suppose this should not have been a total shock as the DJ himself doesn't have an e-mail address; he just gets communications from his boss. Complete lack of technological sophistication = red flag number two, but at this point it was too late because it was the day of the event. Intransigence in communication, outmoded equipment, and a superstitious fear of technology that has been in use for many years do not necessarily ensure a poor performance by a wedding DJ. Alas, our DJ John was not up to the task. We had clear and detailed conversations with him about the timing of processionals/recessionals, music to be played for the countdown dance (i.e. "everyone not married for at least five years please leave the dance floor", etc.) and our preference for modern dance music. During the procressional there were lots of abrupt stops. He forgot to play music for our recessional until we were actually most of the way down the aisle. During the mother son dance there was a complete meltdown of his equipment such that "By your Side" (Sade) was interrupted after about 90 seconds by a cacophonous shriek and a jump to a dance song. John's "apology" when I went over to ask about this was a lop-sided grin and the phrase "technical difficulties!" Not an apology (or even an expression of concern) for screwing up my dance with my mother. To his credit he was clear and articulate when making announcements for special dances (bouquet toss, garter toss, countdown dance). Of course that does not necessarily mean he did them well; he played the wrong song for the countdown dance and the progressed through the various cut off points ("Who's been married 5 years?" "10 years?", etc) so slowly that the song ran out and he had to reloop it...he then went up from 35 years in 1 year increments from there despite having been told that the song was intended to honor my wife's grandmother for her 66 years of marriage. Setting aside his technical and timing problems, the next problem came when John decided to stick not only with technology but music from the 1980s, essentially disregarding our requests for modern music to be played during the dance part of the evening. Case in point, a family member request for "some Jackson 5" turned into a 15 minute Michael Jackson medley that essentially felt like he had put "Thriller" into his cassette tape player and let it run. The bride stopped dancing to ask him to change the music. Let me repeat, the BRIDE STOPPED DANCING TO REQUEST A CHANGE OF MUSIC! The DJ chose to ignore her and continued with the medley. Again, THE DJ CHOSE TO IGNORE A DIRECT REQUEST FROM THE MOST IMPORTANT PERSON AT THE WEDDING. As the second most important person there, I confronted him and used rather strong language to do so. Poor John seemed shocked and aghast that such a thing would happen to him. He insisted that "someone" had told him "This is what the bride wanted." I articulated to John that perhaps the bride knew what the bride wanted, hence the list and numerous conversations before and during his little performance. Technical incompetence and outmoded technology is unacceptable and grounds for a poor review. But refusing a direct request from both bride and groom is unacceptable read more

While we had heard great things about Music Now, we were disappointed by their services. We used Andre as a our DJ and I would not advise using him or Music Now at your wedding. Here are the experiences we had that you should be aware of if you are considering using them: 1) ORGANIZATION: They were very organized in gathering the timeline/information for our wedding and were timely in their e-mail responses. However, on wedding day, we were extremely disappointed in the series of events that occurred. During the reception, the DJ announced that he was going to play a song for the Mother-Son dance. After 3 minutes of silence, he played a different song. While the owner said the song was not working and we understand this happens, Andre did not take the initiative to smooth over the situation and quickly play something else. 2) MUSIC/TRANSITIONS: While most of the songs played stayed within our requests and Andre did a great job keeping the dance floor full, we noticed that there were hardly any transitions between the songs. The music went out 2-3 times during the reception and between a few of the songs, it took about 10 seconds for a new song to start playing. We thought it demonstrated a lack of professionalism and preparation. 3) PROFESSIONALISM: After the wedding, I(the bride) noticed a text message from Andre from during the wedding that read "I'm tired but its going." The owner explained that Andre meant to text this message to a friend. Even if it was a mistake, it demonstrated a serious lack of professionalism on the part of the DJ. 4) FEEDBACK: The groom and I made a mistake when signing the contract and did not realize we would need to pay overtime to cover the length of our reception. This was not brought up to us until minutes before the contracted end time. Fortunately, the owner did not make us pay the overtime to compensate for our negative experience. He integrated our song requests in very seamlessly while somehow staying true to the wedding vibe (i.e. music choices were country, top 40, pop, etc., in other words all over the place). His wedding packet is extremely helpful and organized-- by knowing the genres of music we were interested in and the percentage of the audience over 60 years old he was able to intuitively play a lot of great music to pace the night accordingly. I met Jack at the Intel event. As a caricaturist of many years I have seen many DJs. Some better than others. Not only did Jack play music of all genres but he was super friendly to all he interacted with. A lot of times a DJ will "hide" in their booth and run a boring playlist and not really interact with the crowd. Not Jack. My wife and I hired Music Now to do our wedding reception in April. He fulfilled his duties at the reception wonderfully! We received compliments from guests on his style and overall effect he had on the wedding. However, behind the scenes there were a number of incidents which definitely put a foul taste in my mouth. 1. During the initial conversation over the phone the owner of Music Now assured us he would personally DJ our wedding. He sent a different DJ. 2. After promising us everything was in order, the owner called the day before our wedding and told us he did not have the Mother-Son song. 3. During the wedding, the DJ interrupted my wife while she was talking with our pastor and family, and informed her that his contract was quickly expiring and he wanted to rush through the cake cutting, garter toss etc, so he could leave. This is despite the fact we agreed beforehand that should we go long, he would gladly stay, and my wife's mom could pay later. Even with our card on file, he refused to stay longer until we gave him cash. 4. The three songs we requested he not play, he played. Again, he was professional during the reception, but very very unprofessional behind the scenes. I cannot recommend. read more

I wanted to rent some equipment and found out that he rents crappy stuff and ridiculous prices...don't rent equipment from him, get better stuff at a better price from Santa Cruz Sound. Jack was the DJ at my daughter's July wedding. He did a superb, professional job. We were all a little reluctant to even have a DJ, as we've been to so many events where the DJ takes over the wedding and seems to think he's supposed to be the entertainment. Jack was professional, friendly, kept the timeline moving as planned, played (and didn't play) exactly the type of music and specific songs requested, even a few he had to hunt for in advance. He provided great background music during the dinner and cocktails, and then wonderful dance music as the evening went on. I never met Jack or Andre in person, but spoke to Jack many times and communicated through email a lot! I also got a chance to speak to Andre the week of the wedding and did a run down of the timeline. And we had Stoney as our DJ...he was the best! I clicked on one star because I'm not sure I can register a 0 stars. We hired Music Now for our daughter's recent wedding. Having heard such good reviews, we opted to pay extra for Jack. The wedding was lovely, the music not so. Our daughter and son-in-law spent many hours choosing music off the Music Now list, listing songs they wanted to include and songs they DID NOT want included. They also made a CD with extra songs, discussed this with Jack and delivered the CD. The day of the wedding, Jack appeared, in poor health. He shared this fact with us. I don't know what happened but none of the songs requested were played. I know as I looked over the list beforehand. Not only were the songs played not requested but there were two that my daughter had specifically asked to NOT play. He did not read the audience and many people who would have danced at the wedding did not because of the music choice. My daughter was not happy. I am not happy. We wondered how this could have happened. The only plausible explanation was that Jack was not well - in which case he should have contacted us and sent someone else. My husband, who is a wonderful speaker was the MC of the reception. Was Jack angry about that? So I can read all the wonderful reviews and know that this company usually comes through, but when it doesn't, it impacts an important life event. read more

I write this review later because I didn't realize there was a site like yelp that you could write reviews on and I was not aware that anyone could even do such a thing but either way that isn't the point the point is you as a company are wrong about what you are saying. I expect you to try to wiesle out of things as you did the same thing on my wedding day. First of all I never said I would write you a review at all hints I didn't know you could even do such a thing and second we had two uplighting not 4 as stated on our contract and one was broken but did get the second one when they happen to magically find one that they had all along and third you Jack and Jessica personally promised us a mirror ball which was a must have but didn't deliver and before we signed the contract I asked why it wasn't noted on the contract and you personally told me over phone that it was already included in the package so you guys don't put it on the contract but that is what the package meant which I now know to make sure I get every detail written down before signing guess I just trusted you knew what you were doing. Also you still didn't explain why the dedication song wasn't played until I said something to Jessica and you still didn't say why you guys played the wrong song for our entry song which I have solid proof that it was provided to your company and agreed you guys would play it and had it and what tines the music would start and when it would be played but if you want to defend your company even though it is lies then that is fine by all means go ahead . I am not here to argue just stating facts and giving my opinion so others know so it doesn't happen with there wedding too and as I looked you have more than a couple bad reviews stating a lot of the same things. Again viewers the choice is yours and I wish you the best of luck if you decide to go with this company for it might be the worst decision you have made I HIGHLY suggest a different company to go with so the bride to be is not screwed like I was read more

Jack was our DJ and did a great job! I felt badly as our list got to him late, and even after that, we sent more songs we wanted him to play. I would say that we were a bit confusing, yet he still pulled it off beautifully. He was extremely professional in every way, and it was very important to him that we were satisfied. He noticed that not many people were dancing for awhile and promptly changed that around by picking up the music, and he even did a run of the "chicken dance" which got many people on the floor and continued to be much more fun. He came to me a few times during the evening to check in with me to make sure everything was exactly as I wanted. When I approached him at his station, he never hesitated for a second to see what I wanted.
