We had a wonderful experience working with Gretchen and Kerry! They were professional and so talented. They played our ceremony and cocktail hour music, and they were terrific! Gretchen was super clear and responsive to all emails and questions. We had a few conversations with her before the big day to review our favorite songs and discuss the timeline. We also loved that they had a wide range of music selections, so we didn't waste much time thinking about what song to play. It saved a lot of our time. They were prompt, professional, and very talented. Their music was beautiful, and we could not have been happier! We are so glad they were part of our big day. We highly recommend them! Look no further and hire Musical Heartstrings, full stop. We had Gretchen and Kerry play cello and violin respectively for our November wedding at the Brazil Room in Berkeley. I love stressful situations only because they tend to be very revealing in terms of people's character, and great character is important when you're working on a potentially very stressful event like a wedding. Well, two weeks before the wedding, the groom decided to veto a key piece of music that was going to be part of my vows. Within a tight timeframe (and our limited budget), Gretchen took the initiative to search for a musical score that would suit a backup piece of my choosing and got me and Kerry into her home for a last-minute rehearsal. They didn't have to do any of this and yet they did. I am forever grateful for their grace, support, and willingness to accommodate us when they didn't have to. From the beginning, Gretchen was so communicative and well-organized, and I just loved the sheer volume of samples on their website (which was also very mobile-friendly). Other than our caterer, Gretchen was the most communicative and on-top-of-it vendor I worked with. It was so enjoyable working with both her and Kerry and they played beautifully for our wedding ceremony and cocktail hour. They played everything from pieces from The Hobbit to Lady Gaga, and many other selections from their extensive repertoire. Now, I am looking forward to hopefully having Gretchen as my cello teacher. Excellent musicians, excellent people. Lots of love to musical heartstrings!

Musical Heart Strings was a pleasure to work with for our wedding. Gretchen was super responsive any time we messaged her. Their repertoire is so varied that the inner nerd in my wife and I got to enjoy some studio ghibli songs added to our ceremony. We commissioned 2 songs from them and they delivered beautifully! Would definitely recommend Musical Heart Strings!

Musical Heart Strings created the magical ambience that we envisioned for our wedding! We had so much fun and ease picking out songs from their repertoire. When our wedding day came, we were absolutely in awe hearing the music come to life as they delivered on every song. From beginning to end, we appreciated their responsiveness, thought and care. They were extremely personable and detail oriented. We are so grateful that Musical Heart Strings was able to be a part of our wedding day to make it so special and memorable!

We have known Gretchen and Kerry for years and have the pleasure of listening to their amazing performance at a local cafe so when it comes the time to finding entertainment for my husband's and mine joint 50th birthday celebration, it was a no-brainer to book them. The booking process was seamless and professional. We were blown away by the huge selection of music in different genre. Both ladies arrived at our party early to set up and prep. They are total pros and we deeply appreciate that. We 100% will recommend them to everyone! Thank you!

Musical Heart Strings are the best! My wife and I reached out to a couple of different violinists to see who could play at our wedding ceremony. We got some responses back but none made us feel as comfortable as Gretchen did. From the very first meeting, she understood our vision. She knew exactly what was required to give us the best service possible. With the many meetings we had with Gretchen, she would always assure us that we had nothing to worry about, and she could not have been more right about that. Musical Heart Strings has a long and extensive repertoire of songs to choose from, which is one of the biggest reasons they drew our attention. We wanted a very specific song for myself to walk down the aisle to (Regalo De Dios by Julion Alvarez) and unfortunately, they did not have that song in their repertoire. When I mentioned it to Gretchen, she assured me I had nothing to worry about. We found the music sheet online and with ease, they were able to learn it and play it for us. It was beautiful. Our guests even told us how their music added to the ambiance and how every time they hear those songs on the radio, it reminds them of the ceremony. And these are the types of moments that I will cherish forever. And it was all thanks to Gretchen and Kerry. You can not only see the chemistry, but you can feel it between them as they are orchestrating. The professionalism and care given to my wife and I during one of the most stressful times of our lives, was second to none, and I cannot be more grateful for them. With that being said, I would absolutely recommend them to anyone and everyone!

Musical Heart Strings was a pleasure to work with for our wedding at Winchester Mystery House. They are so friendly and gave us many options, as well as a large playlist to pick from when designing the soundtrack to our day. They performed for our guests before our ceremony, during the ceremony and at cocktail hour. I'm so happy they were able to be a part of our special day and were the perfect touch to our wedding.

Musical Heart Strings went ABOVE and BEYOND for us at our wedding in April. We requested three custom arrangements and Gretchen was so responsive and gave us frequent updates to the progress of our arrangements. They even provided a midi version of our procession song for our rehearsal. On top of that, it's tough enough planning a wedding during the pandemic but they were one of the few vendors that already had their own safety protocols - evidence based and actually up to date!

I'm so glad we hired Musical Heart Strings for our wedding! They added so much to the day with their extensive and very diverse repertoire. Picking our song list was so fun because they have seemingly endless options to choose from! We ended up opting for the quartet option and couldn't have been happier. They sounded absolutely beautiful together! We asked them to play through guest arrival, our ceremony, and our cocktail hour. Working with Gretchen was a breeze - she's incredibly professional, responsive, and genuine. I had multiple people compliment me on their performances and even passed their contact information on to a friend who asked for it for another wedding! Pro tip: Think twice before letting your photographer take some pre-ceremony formal photos right next to where the Heart Strings are playing! It was an already emotional time, but the tears really started to flow with the beautiful sounds of Ed Sheeran instrumentals in the background! It was all I could do to keep it together and stay photo-worthy! :)

We'd ask them questions about their setup, change requests, or even simply excusing us to pass by to a door only. Each response was shockingly unprofessional and rude. I would think they understand after being in this business so long that not everything goes to plan on a wedding day and making changes/compromise is important into making the big picture of the event happen. Moving on... Music was delayed during cocktail hour because they had to move equipment from the ceremony to the dining area. When I asked kindly if they could play music as requested by the groom, they responded with "you'll get it when we get there." Really diminished the vibe of the cocktail. They left their road cases in visible sight instead of moving it back to the truck, making it difficult for other vendors to create a clean presentation for their area. The music for the dancing was not loud enough. Again, the groom personally asks to turn the volume up and it didn't happen. Also, the music had no transitions like a professional DJ! Basically, a fade with a new song cued up, sometimes the delay would be 5-10 seconds of awkwardness. Both the owner and his assistant were seriously frustrating working with. I would never recommend them to any future clients. The owner did mention that he is retiring, I'm glad they are. Oh, something positive. They had quality equipment.

This was our third time working with them, and each one has been consistently strong, even with different DJs and MCs each time. For this event, Kieu (MC) and Trey (motivator/dancer) stood out. They brought sustained energy, joy, and they kept the kids dancing and engaged throughout. The lighting setup exceeded expectations and included a few elements we hadn't anticipated, which added to the overall atmosphere. The LED screen behind the stage was also a great addition. In the lead-up, communication was clear and structured. Dan from the office and Kieu made sure we understood what they needed, and the process included multiple emails and a productive Zoom call. This is not a low-cost option, but it's also not just a DJ service. They effectively drive the event. Several of the kids told us it was the best bat mitzvah they'd been to, which is probably the most relevant feedback. For context, they also handled our wedding years ago, and that experience was similarly well run and high energy. The consistency across multiple events is what stands out.

Unfortunately, that was exactly the experience we encountered. After receiving payment, the musicians left the venue without any communication or explanation. The venue has a strict noise ordinance, which required additional coordination, setup adjustments, and effort in order to proceed with the performance. Despite being aware of these circumstances and after having already been paid, they chose to leave rather than communicate or work through the situation. Their lack of professionalism and communication created unnecessary stress and disappointment for my friend on what was supposed to be a special and memorable day. Clear communication, especially when unexpected challenges arise, is essential when providing services for important events. Based on this experience, I cannot recommend their services. I truly hope they listen to everyone's feedback and do better, no one deserves to be ghosted during any special event, and we do not wish to hinder people who love to work and love what they do. They were hired to provide live music and arrived at the venue, but couldn't use their speakers because the venue wouldn't allow them and instead offered alternative equipment. Everyone agreed to the change, and they were paid in cash at the moment. Shortly afterward, they left without performing and stopped responding to calls and messages. Although my friend eventually received a refund, the stress, confusion, and last-minute disappointment they caused on her wedding day were completely unacceptable and completely ruined what should have been one of the happiest days of her life. No bride should have to deal with this kind of experience, especially on such a special occasion. We are extremely disappointed with the lack of professionalism and communication and would not recommend this vendor to anyone.

This review is long overdue. My husband and I went back and forth multiple times about whether or…read morenot to post a review, but we ultimately decided that we wish we had known what our experience would be like prior to booking Jessica as our DJ. We got married in the summer of 2023 and below is an account of the things we noticed. When we reached out to Jessica following the wedding and reception, we initially received a response which included a rebuttal to each of our observations, but when we followed up with two more emails about how we were open to rectifying the situation, there was no response. 1. The incorrect song was played for the bridal processional. We are willing to take partial credit for this mistake, as Jessica has a clause in her contract which states that all music must be available on iTunes. While we mistakenly assumed that the version of our song was on iTunes, we don't understand why Jessica didn't tell us beforehand that she had trouble finding the version. We would have sent an mp3 to her right away. Instead, she played a different version of the song and as a result, the part that we told her to fade into did not line up with our version and the fade in was awkward. The mishap started things off differently than we had expected. It impacted me (bride) on a personal level because of the emotional aspect of finding the "perfect" processional song. 2. Our first dance song was cut in half unexpectedly. We double checked that the questionnaire we filled out for her indicated that we wanted it to fade out at 1:52. Instead, the song faded about a minute in. We were very confused (as guests could see on our faces) and were disappointed because we had practiced a lot for our dance. She responded by stating that we gave her a "look" to express that we had stage fright and she faded out early. Neither I nor my husband looked at her during our dance. We also never discussed a "look" with Jessica, so we were even more perplexed when she brought that up. We were smiling, looking at one another, and having a great time until the confusion came. 3. Much of the music from our playlist(s) was not played. As in, almost none of the music played was from our playlist(s). We indicated specific "vibes" that we wanted in our music and that wasn't followed. We don't remember hearing most of the music we indicated for cocktail hour or dinner and neither did our guests. We think we heard a couple of songs for open dancing, but just a few. She responded by stating that we might be surprised about songs we simply missed because we were away at photos and whatnot. We asked her to send us a list or screenshot of the playlist to confirm, but did not receive a response. 4. We spoke with her over the phone about her playing the role of "emcee" in addition to DJing. We hoped that meant she would take initiative to check in with us about making announcements, hyping the crowd, etc. From our perspective, she did not present with the energy level we were hoping to see. This may have been a personal preference on our part, but her presence as a DJ was more on the passive side as compared to every other wedding we have attended. Ultimately, we would have gone in a different direction if we could go back. We are not the type to leave a less than stellar review for a service, but we feel that it's important to have the things that we regretted laid out as objectively as possible.
