Musso & Frank Grill is the quintessential Hollywood watering hole, and part of its magic is that it feels as though it has barely changed in more than 100 years. It is the perfect place to bring out-of-town guests who want a taste of authentic old Hollywood. Come for a martini lunch, but be warned: one martini is really closer to two, since it arrives with the ice cold glass (with just a rinse of vermouth of course) plus your own chilled mini-shaker that is also full. The ancient wait staff take their work seriously - they've seen it all and have served EVERYone, so the service has that classic, professional polish you rarely find anymore. You may well spot a celebrity, especially at lunch or dinner at their favorite booth or table If you do not have a reservation, try the grill counter or the grill side that is less formal. The steaks are excellent, as are any of the grilled meats really, lobster mac and cheese, and chicken pot pie are hearty and comforting when you need to carb-load and wallow when you didn't get the part. Try not to fill up on the baguette and signature salted butter, and absolutely save room for dessert. I've been twice and the second experience was absolutely awful. The first time the food was not the best because we came at closing and the steak was way overcooked but the server Theo was amazing and he had them redo the steak and when done properly it's one of my favorites in the city. So I brought my mom again for her birthday tonight since she's visiting from out of state. Tonight the server was one of the worst I've had in a long time. From the time we got there he acted annoyed at literally everything we said or asked. Didn't even greet us or make an attempt, the second we sat down he asked what cocktails we wanted and rolled his eyes and walked away when I said we just sat down and hadn't seen the menu yet. Acted like he hated working there and hated us for being there. I asked them for a different server even (which I've never ever done in my life) but my mom was embarrassed and asked me not to and we kept him and she regretted it later when he was still the worst we've had. No personality, acted annoyed at everything, rarely checked on us, would ignore us when walking by even when we needed something, never told us the bar or kitchen was closing, just zero service from him besides the brief moment after he knew we complained and he pretended to try a little bit. That lasted .2 seconds. It was frustrating because we could see other tables with different servers get great service and truly the server can make or break your evening. I've worked in hospitality for 15 + years so maybe I'm more aware of when servers are spectacular or terrible. And the first time I went, even though my friend was late picking me up the server was still really wonderful. He even remembered me tonight and took a picture of my mom and I instead of our server who should have been the one offering for the special occasion. We were celebrating her birthday and I left saying I never want to come here again. To top of off, I'm a big wine person and they served their port in a rocks glass. I've never I bought an expensive Madeira or port and had it served in such an awful glass for tasting. It ruined the pour, it didn't smell or taste right. Glasses truly matter and it showed a lack of care. The pour is usually smaller for ports and Madeira but this was laughable how little they gave. My mom lost her pearl earring to just top off the worst dining experience we've had in a long time.. in the video singing happy birthday to her she has both on but right before we left one fell out and we couldn't find it on the floor. They were trying to close down so they said they'd call us if they found it but I'm not feeling super hopeful after the bad experience. read more

We were looking for a little class and old-school elegance before heading off to the Smiths/Morrissey Convention, and Musso & Frank delivered on every level. The doors opened at 4 PM, and we were genuinely surprised at how quickly the place filled up. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly greeted and escorted to the bar. My first impression? It felt like stepping into another era. The timeless atmosphere, the bartenders in their classic dinner vests, the polished wood, and the unmistakable Hollywood history surrounding you it all adds up to something special. The bartending team was a show in itself. Watching them effortlessly craft two and three cocktails at a time with precision and confidence was impressive. The Dry Martini was absolutely flawless about as good as it gets. Even better, they didn't blink when I ordered my signature Black Manhattan, a cocktail that's often met with puzzled looks elsewhere. Here, it was prepared perfectly and without hesitation. We kept things light and ordered a few small plates. The shrimp cocktail was so good we immediately ordered a second round. And the famous tomato soup? My oh my. Some things simply have to be experienced firsthand, and this is one of them. What really stood out was the service. Even though the bar was filling rapidly, our bartender went above and beyond to make sure every detail was right. The attention to hospitality never felt forced it felt genuine. First time at this establishment. Arrived on time and parked on their lot. Fifteen dollars to park your car and dine. They validate the ticket to pay the fifteen dollars. I don't know if it's more if you don't valid. They have a dress code too. No hats during dinner time. The chicken pot pie is tasty. They present the meal and transfer to a plate to cool off the pie. The roasted chicken is delicious. For dessert the key lime and apple pie are a must. Save room! We will definitely dine again. Dining experience was nice and quiet. Walked over to Musso and Frank Grill after the Sound of Music at the Pantages, always a great time. Try to sit in Marco's section of the counter, always a nice vibe! Last night had the Veal Schnitzel with prosciutto along with a side of broccolini and hollandaise sauce. My wife had 8ounce filet and we shared a 1919sundae. 5.5.26 Hubby wanted to try this spot while we were in LA after seeing it featured in Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood. I made a 9:15 PM reservation, and surprisingly, the restaurant was still packed that late. We arrived early and grabbed a seat at the bar--where part of the movie was filmed--while we waited. Even more surprising, I received a text about 20 minutes before our reservation time letting us know our table was ready. Service was a bit slow, but our server was very friendly. We split the New York steak and the chicken Parmesan, with mashed potatoes on the side since sides are à la carte. The chicken Parmesan was absolutely massive--it took up the entire plate. If it wasn't for our second bar host, I would've given this place ONE star for the service from the first bar host... Arrived on opening with our party of 4. 2 of us got seats at the bar, while the other two stood by. So...the first bar host was incredibly rude and looked like he hated being there. He was stationed on the far right if you're facing the bar. Like dude, you just opened. Why are you grumpy. He approached us as soon as sitting down and asked "you know what you want?" and we stated we were not ready yet. I asked if he had a menu of specialty cocktails and the dude actually rolls his eyes and half tosses a menu at me that I had to catch on the counter before it fell off. We were in shock at this guy's behavior. Thankfully he was not our main bar host because he shifted attention to other customers closer to his side. I'm not going to lie.. drinks were flowing so I can't quite remember the side dishes I was eating. I just know that the potato dish we ordered was delicious! I love vintage and places with history and my husband surprised me with reservations at Musso & Frank's! We got there at 6pm and parking lot in the back with Valet ($15)was super convenient. Walking in you truly feel like you teleported back in time. The place has a very cool, classy vibe. The waiters are dressed in red coats and mgmt in full suites. You can hear live music playing at the bar and people watching the steaks cook on opposite bar. Our table was a private booth and felt very exclusive. Our waiter was a delight and made us feel so welcomed. The steak and rib eye were perfectly cooked and everything was delicious. We ordered the 1919 sundae and we highly recommend it. The atmosphere and vibes are incredible, the service was truly next-level, and the food and drink are second to none. The scallops were wonderful. The steak, of course, is exceptional. The Potatoes Au Gratin were the surprise star of the meal, and the creamed spinach is a classic. Cocktails were great, as well. The ambiance is just simply amazing know you are sitting where many historic and current celebrities have dined. The best part is the staff treats everyone the same with great respect and great hospitality! As for the food the steak was perfectly cooked and had great flavor. The Key lime pie was awesome and probably top 2 I've ever had and I've eaten that because I've eaten key lime pie in the Florida keys and Miami where they have some of the best. We arrived on a busy Friday in late January to celebrate a long overdue holiday dinner with my work colleagues. My boss really does love this restaurant. The food was very good, and we were having a great time with the appetizers and drinks and entrees. Then it came time to pack up our left overs. Another staff member came to our table and asked how many to-go containers we'd like. Two of my colleagues said they'd like a to-go container. He returned with two small containers and scooped their left overs into them. But there were still a mountain of sides in the middle so we asked for more containers. The man then became very irritated and said "But I asked you how many containers you wanted, and you said two!!" and stormed off. He brought back additional containers and very aggressively deposited the remaining food into them. My boss thought it was funny. I felt horrified, like we'd done something wrong and should apologize. Our waiter then returned and we carefully ordered dessert and drinks. During the remainder of our time there, I felt uncomfortable each time the to-go container man would appear. I didn't want to let it bother me, but I don't think good service should ever make a customer potentially feel bad. Was he joking? Was he serious? Meals were tasty; however, 20 minutes after I left - I started having dramatic stomach pains and spent the next 2 hours with explosive results on the toilet. I called the manager and he couldn't have cared less. Even a low quality restaurant would have competed the entry OR would have sent a gift card as an apology. He didn't even apologize; he just said others ate the same food and haven't called yet! You would expect more from a supposedly high class restaurant. I've eaten here several times before and always had a good experience, which made this visit especially disappointing. The dirty martini was fine, and the non-alcoholic drink was just okay. My sister-in-law ordered the salmon and had to send it back twice -- first it came out overcooked and dry, and the second time it was raw on half of the fish. Clearly, the kitchen struggled with a very basic dish. On the positive side, the steak was cooked perfectly. What truly ruined the experience, though, was how management treated my brother, who is disabled and has a legitimate service dog (not an emotional support animal). He has proper documentation, yet the manager repeatedly questioned him about why he needed the service dog -- which is inappropriate and not their business. They were already provided with the legal paperwork stating the dog is permitted. When I tried to speak with another manager, he was dismissive and smug, talked over me, and claimed this was "protocol." It is not -- what they did was illegal. Because of how poorly my brother was treated, our family will not be returning. This experience made it clear that this restaurant does not value its customers or respect the disabled community. read more

We came to Musso & Frank Grill because Michael Connelly talks about this LA landmark in his books, and wow--it lived up to the hype. We stopped in on a Friday night just for a drink at the bar, had such a great time that we came back Saturday for dinner. Connelly always mentions ordering a martini which comes with a sidecar (a little extra pour on ice), so that's exactly what I got--and it was perfect. The bartender was incredibly friendly and engaging, and told us that many of the servers and bartenders have been there for years. Once you're hired, you don't leave--and it shows. Apparently all of their mixed drinks come with a sidecar, which is such a cool old-school touch. We ended Friday night with a slice of their house-made chocolate cake, which was rich, classic, and absolutely delicious. I couldn't get reservations for Saturday, so we walked in and specifically asked for seats at the bar on the restaurant side, which put us right in front of the grill. We waited about 15 minutes, and they call you when your seats are ready--easy and painless. The cook working the grill was friendly and chatted with us throughout the night, and we learned that all grilled items are made right there, which was awesome to watch. Since it's a steakhouse, I ordered the filet with a salad, and we split a baked potato--classic and done perfectly. The service was outstanding. Every server was professional, polished, and clearly knew exactly what they were doing. The entire vibe screams old-school steakhouse: the decor, the jackets and ties on the staff, the walls covered with old menus and historic photos. This is clearly an LA institution that has stood the test of time for a reason. 10/10. Highly recommend. As Taylor Swift says, "we hit the best booth at Musso & Frank.." so I had to do that. This is such a historic Steakhouse being the oldest restaurant on Hollywood since 1919. They are known for many celebrities having their own booths here, which have been named rightfully so. Upon entering, we were led to our booth and presented a birthday card which is so thoughtful as we were celebrating my husband's birthday. The service was great as they brought out bread and butter for us. I always appreciate when the butter is actually soft enough and they even got us a second plate. It might've been a mistake, but we ain't complaining. For the meal, I ordered the Roast Prime Rib ($70), which includes a baked potato. The husband got the Bone-In Ribeye Steak ($68) with Truffle Mac and Cheese ($22). Wow, the food was all very delicious and the vibe really enhanced this classic Hollywood feel. I also liked how private many of the tables were, which makes sense why celebrities enjoyed coming here. The prime rib was super tender although there are some fatty parts. I could use some extra toppings on the baked potato, but it's a nice side to pair. Everything was very reasonable for what you're getting. We ended up taking leftovers home and I liked how they packed everything for you. My husband also had an Espresso Martini ($18), which was basically two glasses so a great value. At the end of the meal, we were brought a complimentary birthday dessert as well. This was such a nice gesture without us asking at all. Loved the food, service and vibe here, especially if you're into the classic Hollywood history. The only thing I didn't like is the fact that they are located on most touristy street of LA, which means parking sucks. They have a parking lot behind the restaurant with validation for $15 for 2 hours or $25 for more. Instead, I ended up parking at the Cherokee & Hollywood Parking Lot for a flat $18 fee after 6pm. Had a 4pm reservation and walked over from the Pantages. We were a little early so we waited outside with quite a few others who were there for a mix of reservations and walk ins. Once they opened we were seated quickly and efficiently. We had a small booth for two with high walls so you can't really see anything else going on in the restaurant which made it feel very private and cozy. It was my birthday and they had a cute birthday card waiting for me on the table which was such a nice touch. I ordered a dirty martini which was delicious and my mom had a glass of rosé. We shared everything starting with the Caesar salad. Yelp steered me wrong because it didn't come with anchovies but our waiter was able to add a side for $10. Then we had the onion soup and you absolutely must get this. It was incredible. Next was the gnocchi with Gorgonzola which was very good. To finish they brought me a warm brownie with ice cream for my birthday and it was so delicious. They kept our waters full the entire time and our server was nice though there was an obvious difference in service compared to the table across from us who was getting the full history of the restaurant and lots of recommendations. M&F is unbeatable when you combine the progressional service, quality of food, genuinely nostalgic environment and rich history. Despite all that, the prices are reasonable especially when compared with many of the chain steakhouses. The moment my vodka martini (served with a carafe) arrived, I knew we were in for a special experience. The steak tartar was fresh and tasted clean and not overpowering like many other steakhouses that over flavor it. Ribeye was perfectly seared with a well balanced crust while it remained medium rare. The dish that made the strongest impression was the veal schnitzel, which had a light and crunchy batter, tender inside topped off with savory prosciutto. It's always packed and from my experience it's best to plan for a reservation about 3 weeks in advance so you get the table that you want. There is the original dining room and a new dining room. I prefer the original, but there is no tangible difference as far as dining experience. Leather banquette seating and dark woods with a nostalgic vibe. The service is impeccable. The menu is mostly American comfort foods and grilled entrees. Personal favorites: The onion soup, any grilled meat from the ordinary chopped steak to a filet is grilled to perfection. We asked what are the favorites on the menu. He said the steaks. We started with 2 lobster cocktails and steak tartare. Both good not amazing but good. Next was an onion & tomato salad, Cesar salad and avocado salad. Ceasar salad was the better one of the 3. The tomato wasn't very ripe or flavorful in the tomato onion salad. The Buratta salad was decent. Then we had a linguine bolognese for the table. It was tasty but mushy overcooked pasta. I ordered filet mignon med/rare. It was cooked perfectly and had a nice rub. Husband got sweetbreads which looked pale and like chix nuggets. That was the most disappointing dish. We had veal Milanese which was very good. Also had the ribeye it was ok, not great. Sides of spinach which was mostly cheese and no spinach. Truffle Mac n cheese which was cooked perfectly and pretty good. Mushrooms which were not my dish but they said not bad. Then dessert we had a brownie on the house since it was my bday. The brownie was awesome warm and gooey, the best dessert. We also had an apple tart w/ vanilla ice cream which was very good and chocolate cake which was dry and not worth the calories. Overall the service is what made the place. Luis was outstanding. It's Hubbies birthday and he opted for a staycation. So we're doing the touristy stuff in downtown Hollywood. Which means dinner at the famous Musso & Franks. As I was getting ready we were watching Ocean's Eleven. Brad Pitt and George Clooney are sitting in the restaurant we will be dining shortly. We're very excited! Hubs made the reservation online. We couldn't be seated at 7 so he looked for the next available time slot which was 8:30. Unfortunately he missed the little detail that it was 8:30 three weeks from now as the host made us aware. As our brains are scrambling trying to think of where we could eat, the host smiles and says "I'm going to squeeze you two in." Overjoyed and relieved!! The place was buzzing with laughter and excitement. Mostly group out for a fun Friday night. There were waiters in red jackets making their way through the crowd. We were seated in the large dining room. It was like stepping back into old Hollywood. Our waiter, Robert, brought fresh sourdough bread for the table and told us that many of the old school stars had dined there like Marilyn Monroe and Robert Redford. Very cool. Hubby ordered an Old Fashioned and I got a Dirty Martini as we fawned over the menu. Of course my carnivore spouse got the ribeye. I ordered the Grilled Salmon so I could sample both the surf and the turf. The salmon had a butter and caper sauce that bumped this dish up to the best salmon ever. The ribeye was melt in your mouth and juicy! We shared the creamiest mashed potatoes and perfectly grilled broccolini. We took the cheesecake to go. I took a couple of bites before bed and it was smooth and sweetened with fresh berries. A perfect night! Musso & Franks is a must if you want the total Hollywood, CA experience! Pretty much everything about our experience was great come over with just a couple of minor details keeping me from giving it the fifth star. Once again, it would be great if you could give 4.5 stars on yelp. But you can't. Going to Musso and Frank is like stepping back in time. We were greeted like old friends upon entering. They gave my son a birthday card and seated us immediately in a booth in the room with the open grill. Our waiter was everything you might expect in an old school steakhouse. He helped me choose the right gin for my martini. The martinis are legendary for a good reason. We had the bone in ribeye steaks, a Caesar salad, the wedge salad, and three sides, the truffle, mac & cheese, the creamed spinach, and the sautéed mushrooms. I also had a glass of good Cabernet with my steak. And of course, the good sourdough bread was on the table almost immediately after we sat. The pace of the service was unhurried, though we felt our waiter could have stopped by a little more often. My only complaint about the food was that my steak had a little more gristle than I would've preferred although it was delicious and I would say cooked a little more rare than medium rare but still excellent. My son and I both ate the entire thing. To be honest, we wanted a special experience because it was a birthday, and I don't mind paying for a special experience, but overall, I feel the value was not great because the meal for three, with only one person having drinks, was more expensive than we felt it should be. But otherwise, no complaints at all and quite an enjoyable meal and experience. I will add that originally we were supposed to be seated in one of the private dining rooms. A good friend of ours who comes here frequently said to make sure we were in one of the main dining rooms. He said we wouldn't have the full Musso and Frank experience. Luckily, despite the fact that we had a 7:30 reservation in the private dining room, I had a notification with OpenTable if they had an opening, which was allowed despite the time conflict, and we were able to secure a booth, though the maître 'd took credit for the upgrade. Finally got a reservation here for our group of eight. We were seated in the "private" room -- though honestly, it's not really private. There were four other parties in the same space, and with the way the room is built (and one very loud group next to us), it was almost impossible to hold a conversation. I could barely hear anyone at my own table, which made the night feel less enjoyable and definitely not as intimate as I hoped. That said, I'm not faulting the restaurant for that. The staff was super friendly all around. The bartender made some great drinks -- the lemon drop and the grasshopper were both excellent. But once we sat down for dinner, the service slowed way down. Even though our whole table was ready to order shortly after sitting, it took about an hour before we got our food. Now, onto the food -- which was honestly really good. I had the chicken Parmigiana, and it was excellent: perfectly pounded, not too thick or thin, with the sauce and cheese baked right in so it stayed juicy and flavorful. The portion was definitely big enough to share. The truffle mac and cheese was also a standout. They got the balance just right -- you can taste the truffle, but it doesn't overpower the dish. The top was crispy and golden, and underneath was pure comfort food. We also tried the spicy rigatoni, which was packed with flavor. It wasn't actually spicy, but it was cooked perfectly al dente and super tasty. The ribeye and New York steaks (which I forgot to photograph) were both excellent -- cooked just right, juicy, and tender. Desserts were the only miss for me. The chocolate cake was too dense and heavy, the bread pudding was just okay, and the crepe was probably the best of the three, but still nothing I'd rush to order again. One thing to note: the portions are large, but the prices are pretty steep, especially for drinks. And parking adds up -- valet is $25 if you stay more than three hours (which we did, thanks to the slow service) and $15 if you manage to get out sooner. Overall, you can really feel the old-school charm and history of this place, which I appreciated. But the lack of space and noise level made it hard to relax or enjoy the company. You're practically shoulder to shoulder with the next table, and even getting up means bumping into someone. Food-wise, no complaints -- it's all solid. But for me, the experience wasn't quite worth the price or the noise. I wouldn't go out of my way to come back, but I'd definitely join again if someone else planned it. read more

We had reservations at Musso & Frank last night -- made about a month ago -- just before the release of Taylor Swift's new album. If getting a reservation was tough before, I can only imagine it's going to get even harder now! The place was already bustling, with a nice mix of tourists and quite a few locals, which was great to see. We started with the French onion soup, shrimp cocktail, and house salad. The French onion soup was flavorful and not overly salty -- my husband's only complaint was that it could have used a bit more cheese. I enjoyed my shrimp cocktail; the sauce leaned more sweet than spicy, not heavy on the horseradish. My friend's house salad was huge -- definitely big enough to share. For our mains, we had the New York strip, filet mignon, and fettuccine Alfredo for my vegetarian friend. My filet was cooked perfectly -- tender and flavorful. My husband liked his strip but wished it had a bit more marbling. My friend was pleasantly surprised by the Alfredo -- really good, especially for a steakhouse. We finished with the bread pudding. It was okay -- a bit different than what we expected, and it could've used a caramel sauce to bring it together. Not bad by any means (we still ate the whole thing!), just not the standout of the meal. Overall, a classic Hollywood dining experience -- great service, timeless atmosphere, and solid food. Definitely worth the visit, but plan ahead if you want a table! read more

Super nice!!! Had to try this iconic spot while we were in Hollywood. I loved the ambiance here and the servers were all so friendly. They also validate parking which is so nice and hard to come by in this area. They bring out sourdough bread which was good but I wish it was warm rather than cold/room temperature. For my meal, I had a delicious Filet Mignon for my meal and it was so juicy and flavorful and didn't even need a sauce added. The Truffle Mac and Cheese was so delicious and had a crispy cheese topping, and is such a large portion that is certainly shareable. read more

Since last eating here decades ago, I took Diane to meet with a cousin who lives in Hollywood, to share a memorable dinner together. Musso & Frank did not disappoint! The restaurant was nicely furnished with white tablecloths covering tables, and burgundy upholstery for booths and chairs. It was packed with patrons on a Wednesday night. In fact, the only reservation I could obtain days in advance was for 5:00 p.m. We began with a Shrimp Cocktail that included five truly jumbo shrimps that for once were not just meaty, but also sweet, and served with a mild Cocktail Sauce. Complimentary rustic Sourdough Bread & Butter was also a nice starter. I followed with a bowl of Beef Barley Soup, which was savory and delicious. And then we moved on to entrees. My cousin ordered Prime Rib, which was large, very thick and inviting, and accompanied by a Loaded Baked Potato; and Diane and I both selected hard to find Lobster Thermidor. This cheesy and saucy version made with Bechamel Sauce and Gruyere Cheese, and with the crustacean's shell still mounted in the serving dish, was the best rendition of Lobster Thermidor that either of us had ever tasted. Large, perfectly cooked morsels of Lobster in abundance awaited our eager taste buds. It was simply superb in flavor! For sides we ordered both Potatoes au Gratin and Cottage Fried Potatoes. The Potatoes au Gratin were a superior version of this French staple, and the Cottage Fried Potatoes were okay, but tasted better dipped in ketchup. I had planned to skip dessert, but when I saw the dessert menu could simply not pass up the inventive 1919 Sundae made with Vanilla Ice Cream, Caramelized Banana, and Peanut Brittle. This unusual sweet treat included copious amounts of Vanilla Ice Cream, and tasted much like an elevated Bananas Foster. Service was very good, with regular unbidden Iced Tea refills. But our principal waiter was absent for most of our meal. Multiple managers were friendly and helpful. I look forward to one or more quick returns to this classy and historic restaurant to sample several other intriguing dishes that appear on its expansive menu. read more
