We have struggled to find a knowledgeable and reliable tax prep service in the 7 years that we have been married and filing joint taxes, and 2021 was the first year that I was self-employed, so we decided to reach out to Liberty Tax based on all of their positive Google reviews. It was by far the most seamless and straightforward experience we have ever had. This is a family-run business and they have been experts in the field for 40+ years. We met with Steve, who was so welcoming and had such calm, personal, and professional demeanor. It wasn't until the end of the process that I was hit with a $500+ tax prepation fee - and note there was nothing special about our documents, a few W2s and that was it! And there was nothing spectacular about their preparation; in fact they had a new hire do it! Having shopped around now and asked for quotes upfront I am blown away by how equally competent firms in the area are able to offer the same service for less than half the cost. I first went to consult David back in March 2022 and he was great. He answered all my tax questions and I was in and out of the office in no time. I thought to myself, great, I just found an amazing accountant in my neighborhood. During that time, I explained to David about my situation and he responded to come back to me when tax season is over and all he has to do is to file a 1040x (to amend my tax return - 1040). (Side note: The issue that I had was that I initially e-filed my taxes. The federal rejected it but the state accepted it. Which is why I went to seek professional services in resolving the problem). So on December 12, 2022 at 1:30pm I went to see David and his office was busy. I told David I did not have an appointment and I asked, "should I make an appointment"? He decided to hear me out at first but then he passed my case to one of his employees. The employee explained to me that since I did not file my taxes 2020 taxes with them, there is nothing that they can do and I would have to come back during tax season. I tried to explain to them what David told me back in April (to come back after tax season) and David told his employee in Chinese "just ignore him, he is too annoying". Yup, just because someone doesn't speak the language, doesn't mean the person does not understand. The funny thing is that, just over the weekend, the same family friend asked me how was my experience with David because she wanted to file her taxes with him for the upcoming year. I raved about how great he was the first time around but after this experience, it got me to think: if a family friend doesn't even use your service in the first place, it is extremely telling of your professional demeanor or the lack thereof. This review will probably not affect the business but if you are looking for a tax accountant in Elmhurst, stay far away from this place.

He would only agree to pay for $1000. He claims it's my responsibility to audit him and tell him that they were not filed. I am suing him in small claims.

Mustafa saved me a lot of money and I have been going to get my taxes done there for the last three or four years. In the past, I dreaded getting my taxes done, but now I love getting my taxes done because it literally takes less than an hour and I get money back because he knows about the various credits that are available. He really knows the ins and outs of taxes and all the different rules of accounting. In addition, one of my friend's has a business and he set it up through Mustafa, and Mustafa saved him a lot of money in the process. I thought I could do my taxes myself since I'm a student; however, my friend assured me that I would probably save money if a real accountant did my taxes. So, I went to Mustafa, and I was very happy. He saved me over 3,000 dollars which I got back from the government. He's extremely knowledgeable about the tax code, and is also kind as well. Was I scammed or was it incompetence? If any one out there…read morehas had a negative experience with the Forest Hills CPA Mr. Torres, please give me your feedback, I'd love to know about your experience. Update: * On April 1, 2025 I entered into a verbal agreement with Edward Torres, CPA PC Tax & Accounting Services for the "xxxxxxxxxxxx" trust taxes to be prepared and filed to the IRS before the 2024 tax due date deadline. * A tax extension was filed by this CPA to the IRS, but the CPA failed to file the taxes by the extension filing date deadline. * At the initial meeting with him I left the previous year tax returns and any other data that I thought would be helpful in completing the preparation/filing of the trust taxes. * At that meeting Mr. Torres requested two additional items/documents, which the trustee (me), later that day I complied and emailed the CPA the two (2) attached documents, that he had requested. * I have the copies of emails that reflects the requested documents were sent to the CPA, and I also have an email acknowledgment/reply from Mr. Torres. * What I believe happened is a matter of plain old incompetency. * Mr. Torres for whatever the reason erred/failed to file taxes on behalf of the trust by the tax deadline. * When I confronted him he chose to tell a bogus story that he needed more information about the beneficiaries of the trust in order to complete the tax filing task. * He blamed me, saying that the taxes were not prepared and filed by him because I neglected to contact him and supply him the documentation that he requested/needed to complete the taxes. * If that were true, why did he not contact me concerning his documentation needs before the tax filing deadline? * Something I would expect any professional to do. * There is no record of any communication between Mr. Torres and me until after the filing deadline had passed. * You would expect that a professional CPA that was charging a total fee of $2500.00 to complete the taxes, would contact the client, reminding/requesting from the client any missing docs. * That did not happen. * As trustee I am also the sole beneficiary of the above trust and he had all my trustee, and beneficiary information including my tax ID number and the original trust documentation to work with/from. * There are no other listed beneficiaries besides me that have any standing. * He also had a copy of the managed fund yearly statements for the tax year of 2024 where every penny of the trust money is invested. * I also provided him with a copy of the previous years tax return that he could use as a template and simply update the data for the 2024 tax year. * All the necessary info was in the previous years tax filing document forms. * Besides capital gains, no money was withdrawn from the trust fund during the year of 2024. * Unfortunately, my dealings with Mr. Torres was like talking to a brick wall, and is one of the most exasperating, frustrating, people I have encountered. * The question is, why did he not contact me to remedy his so called missing docs. * The reason, he just screwed up, forgot about me, and failed to prepare the trust taxes! * That's the reason he didn't contact me. * Mr. Torres attempted to twist my account version, to justify and hide his failure. * If we are to believe his version of this story to be true, (again) "why did he not contact me for the additional documents that he needed?" * At this latest meeting he did offer to complete my taxes but I would still have to pay him $2000.00 for the task which I no longer felt was viable. * Furthermore, I would still be responsible for any tax late fees incurred. * You know the expression "fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me". * I asked for the $500.00 fee back but he refused to give it to me. I'D LOVE TO HEAR YOUR OPINIONS, PLEASE TELL, ME WHAT YOU THINK!

Ely is SO SMART and was so kind and patient with my mom. He knew the right questions to ask even when she was not necessarily familiar with the implications of everything. This made a huge impression on me because New York can be a very rough place for senior citizens and I feel like he treated my mom as if she was his own. He also offered some very helpful suggestions to both of us for some investment planning. Ely knows the tax code inside and out and looks at the big picture for the financial health of each of his clients. I've been using that Brooklyn accountant for 20 years now and my taxes are somewhat complicated but I will be giving my business to Ely going forward.
