The staff was so helpful and accommodating -- they worked around my schedule and made everything feel smooth and stress-free. What really stood out to me was the follow-up. They checked in to make sure the adjustment was going well, which meant so much. You can tell they truly care about the animals and the families they're placing them with. I absolutely love my puppy -- she has been such a wonderful addition to our family. I'm so grateful for the support and kindness we received throughout the process. Highly recommend!

I was told I would receive it in my email upon adopting, and that they would mail hard copies in the next week (still havent recieved 4 weeks later). My vet got in touch with the rescue this evening and were informed my dog, that I adopted April 10, will need all her vaccines again since they expire May 23. STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS RESCUE...they should NOT be adopting dogs out knowing all the vaccines expire in 6 weeks without informing the new owners!

I feel like they try to get to know each animal and support folks who are fostering as much as possible. I can't speak to the adoption side, but they seem very accommodating to that as well, trying to find the best fit and take time to understand the behavioral info that I shared with them. For fostering, it is our call if we want to meet potential adopters at the shelter and elsewhere - this can be a little confusing but I think it's better to have those in-depth conversations with those who have spent more all-day/all-night one-on-one time in advance of meeting of creatures.

My experience adopting a kitten from here was wonderful…read more These people really love cats - from what I can tell, it's a pretty small group that rescues and fosters on the side while working full-time. I fell in love with a kitten online, but there was already an applicant ahead of me, so I resigned myself to accepting I probably wasn't going to get him. But Pam was so great - she stayed in constant communication with me, and when she hadn't heard back from the other applicant in two days, she emailed me at 10pm to say I had first dibs (which I feel is fair) and that she'd make sure the kitten was at the adoption event for me to come see the next afternoon. So we headed over to Pet Valu in Clifton to meet the kitten and adored him right away. Kristen was so sweet, helpful and genuinely happy to see that one of her kittens had found a new home. She provided us with tons of info and advice, along with a Pet Valu adoption coupon kit. Their vetting process is pretty standard; you fill out an application with details about your living situation, current pets etc. In the final stages, you sign a contract promising not to declaw and that you'll send them proof of having the kitten spayed/neutered. The experience was quite painless (unlike interactions I've had in the past with some larger/more well-known rescue groups), and these women are doing a fantastic job. The quality of their Shelters environment is hazardous to women & children. There's no real…read moreaccessible walking trail or safe parking cause the distance to the door is dangerous . According to Exterminator professionals the Director of Programs Megan Goffney ignores their pest control needs knowing rat holes complaints were made by local SGI members. The grievances made to the CEO J. Meyer but he doesn't seem to care that the staff keep their shelter like a living ghetto. The poor conditions of infestation within the walls & floors were so disgusting in June they kick women out for complaining to the owners. If their rat issues continue to persist or they refuse to get their standards up to County Code they risk the action of NBC4 media investigations if they don't clean up the trash outside the grounds & get their buildings in compliance they'll probably be condemned. They use Federal Grant money like faucet water to pay their wages & salaries instead of keeping the living environments of their buildings under code. They put the health of their residents at risk to diseases just for the sake of having a job.

Shelter House first came on to my radar a few years ago when I was searching for a homeless shelter…read morein the area that accepted food donations that were leftover from a company holiday party (something that is surprisingly hard to find in the area). I became interested in their mission which was to provide safe housing and life skills to homeless families due to domestic violence situations and soon started volunteering every Monday afternoon in their children and teen's room while their mothers attended professional development sessions. I am not going to lie -- it was tough work! I was a 24 year old girl working with a wide range of children ages 2 - 16 with all different personalities and needs all by myself. I would spend my afternoons cuddling children, attempting to play football, teaching the Soulja Boy, and picking up blocks. But after coming in week after week, I found my groove and found myself falling in love with these children and their families. I actually tasted my first bite of daal here and it is now the first dish I order whenever I go to an Indian or Pakistani restaurant because one of the mothers at the shelter used to cook me an extra plate whenever I was there. I unfortunately had to leave the program because of time constraints but I am writing this review in hopes that someone who is looking to give a little piece of their heart finds this place.
