Hands down the worst MVA I've ever been to please go anywhere else. The people here took forever to find my ticket number that was somehow lost, then when I finally got to the kiosk they asked for a receipt for a ticket which was not sent to me. I called the district court to try and retrieve the receipt and the lady got mad and said I'm not gonna wait for you to call them and called another number and made me leave. This is the worst MVA in the state. All of the staff are mean and impolite. The lady at desk 12 was rude and inpatient. When I got up to my seat to get my bag she said to reschedule and come back another day because I took too long. Mind you, I took no longer than 30 seconds. From my experience at the Gaithersburg location (as well as online) the Maryland MVA could be a model for DC and VA counterparts. Their online services are plentiful and, apart from a duplicate title which never arrived, was easy and efficient. The key to making visits to the Gaithersburg office is to make an appointment. I went once without an appointment and was told that I couldn't be seen that day. But, with an appointment, upon my arrival, on my iphone I clicked "I am here". I did not need to line up at a counter to announce anything. Within a minute, I saw my information on the board and new that I was "in line". Within 2 minutes, I was called to a numbered desk. I found the people to be interested, engaging, helpful and experienced. As opposed to DC, they did not interact with the clients begrudgingly. Instead, they were helpful, efficient, and friendly. Boy, that was easy! There is a whole office dedicated to people with appointments. I was at the desk of my assistant within 5 minutes of entering the building. I called ahead, so I had the proper documentation. It took ten minutes to file the paperwork and pay for my real ID. Unfortunately, since my license was due to be renewed in 2022, I will have to come back and repeat this process. But, it was easy and efficient, so I don't mind too much. You can pay an extra $15 dollars to expedite the process, but I chose to wait the ten days. The cost was $20 dollars. I was pleasantly surprised by the whole process. Just make sure you bring the correct documents. Another woman ahead of me was unable to complete the process, because she didn't have the right documents. If you can, make an appointment! I've been to this location several times to renew my license, Real ID and most recent visit was to transfer the title of a car. Arrived a few minutes before my appointment time and there were MVA staff outside checking people in. You still have to go to the counter to check in and get your number though. This location is efficient. Most of the folks there are friendly and try to take care of things efficiently. My title transfer took about 10 minutes and I was out the door. Watch out though. Parking lot is small and now that some of the businesses in the shopping center are re-open, parking may be limited. read more

I had to go to get my emissions test done. Ok no problem, I see Gaithersburg had a 24/7 kiosk! Thinking I would be in and out pretty quick because they probably have multiple, I went somewhat early on a Friday morning. I arrived and ended up waiting (no problem), but only realized as I got closer the wait was long because it's JUST ONE kiosk! I'm sorry, but what..?! Why can't the MVA have a few of these self serve kiosks that don't cause a long wait line of cars?! The test itself only takes a few minutes and was easy to use, but they would decrease the line if they added in a few more around the MVA. Disappointing to say the least, especially since j think this is only one of two self serve kiosks in Montgomery county. This is actually MVA express. Smaller version of a full service MVA * I came here thinking, oooh boy what foolishness will I have to put up with. However that was set aside when friendly customers and MVA reps helped me get what I need with getting MVA stuff done for my car. This location is a lot smaller, though there's plenty of parking. No need to circle the lot. They practice social distancing. I was pleased that all my stuff need to be done at the kiosk. I paid and I was on my way. Make sure your wear gloves or bring disinfectant wipes. As ppl go in and out and its such a small space,.and they don't wipe down. ;( Any other stuff without using a kiosk, you will need to make an appointment. You can't walk in, you will be stopped by the MVA reps. I've been here a few times before for title related issues, and employees are professional! They smile, greet you and really want to help you. IESHA O. at Walnut Hill was the most pleasant and efficient MVA employee that I have had the pleasure of working with in the 30 years since I got my initial license. I have been to MVA offices in Texas, DC, Elsewhere in Maryland and in Massachusetts. Never have I had such a pleasant experience! First of all from what I'm aware of everyone had an appointment before they got there. I was told by an employee to sit and wait until about 20 minutes before my turn. I saw people trying to use the kiosks and not being able to get much if any help from any of the employees working there. Eventually, it was less than half an hour before my appointment so I got online. For some reason, when it was my turn, the machine reader brought up a different name, phone number and address. I cleared them out and put in my information. However, it turned out that I selected the wrong thing. It was not a renewed tag sticker or registration so I got on another line to complain. Good thing I did because what I had gotten from the machine was a copy of. Another registration card, so I said excuse me loudly to get the attention of one of the employees. She had me go over to a particular number desk and joined me over there that was when I found out that somehow I had transacted the wrong thing she was able to correct the situation And did. I left after that, but not without adding a parting shot to her. I told her "This is about the worst service I have ever had here!" The employees seem to think that the machinery is self-explanatory when it is not necessarily self-explanatory! At least a few seem to have major attitude about helping the residence of the state of Maryland who come for services. we are not crap under your feet! Thank you are not entitled to your state job! So stop acting as though we are your peons, and that you do not need to treat us politely! We are not your recruits! Don't treat us like we are either stupid or are mentally deficient! Other than on the screen, I did not see any instructions on how to use the machine how to make it go back or do anything else. No one likes being treated as though they are stupid so cut it out!! Ok....maybe I was very fortunate on this particular visit, or maybe my yelp buddy Mia S.'s review prepared me for the worst, but overall my experience was truly 5 stars. I was promptly checked-in when I arrived, and I hadn't even taken my seat yet when my number was called. My MVA service person was Victoria, and she was fantastic. She was efficient and kind, and literally had me out of there within 15mins. She even offered me the opportunity to re-take my photo if I happened to not like the 1st photo taken. So here's the low down: this MVA location is within a shopping center, so there's plenty of (free) parking. For Real ID license-make an appointment!! and bring several "approved" documents that qualify for your proof of residency, age/identity, and social security...DO NOT JUST BRING THE MINIMUM amount of documents. ex. For proof of residency, I brought in my income tax return, and credit card bill-both of which include my residential address. btw, you are only required to bring in 2 documents for proof residency. Well, Victoria politely stated that they have been having issues with the real ID folks accepting tax returns, and then she asked if I had any other qualifying documents. Fortunately, I also brought in my vehicle registration card and a Maryland state issued professional license just in case. After that, Victoria took care of everything! done and done. I went in today for the Real ID shizz and just a warning for all...depending on who you deal with they might just give you a hard time just like the MVA is known for. I went in with the necessary documents that I picked online (tax document, passport, SS card, and a regular piece of mail). You have a choice of what to bring and the gentleman I dealt with still asked for a car registration card on top of everything else. It wasn't a big deal to get the card from my car but it wasn't one of the documents I originally picked...crazy right? I made an appointment ahead of time which helped and I only waited for 5-7 minutes and the whole process took 15 minutes. *Make an appointment* A few of the staff were tolerable and some were not. I still choose this location since it's express over the main location in Gaithersburg. The key is to always make an apportionment and bring your whole filing cabinet just in case you deal with someone like I did today. read more

On September 16th at 11:45 am, I had an appointment at the MVA. The staff member at counter 12 was incredibly rude and openly mocked me. Her behavior was blatantly racist. She told me I was her source of entertainment and insisted I should fill out a survey saying I was satisfied. Let me be clear--I am not satisfied. This review reflects the treatment I experienced. Came here to drop my tags off after I sold my car and saw a big line down the street. Upon closer investigation I saw there is a separate dropbox for people who just need to drop off tags. There's a paper form next to the box along with pens. I filled out the form and used the provided rubber bands to wrap it around my tags and dropped them into the box. Within 48 hours I had an email confirmation that my tags had been received and my refund was processed. Definitely the quickest in and out at the MVA I've ever had. ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE SERVICE!!!!!!!!!!! I came to this Walnut Hill DMV express office today (Friday, 07/07/2023) to get my driver license upgraded to real ID and needed assistance on which tabs/service to select on the kiosk computer. On this day, an older gentleman and asian police officer- were both sitting. After a very short wait when I got to the front of the line, the older gentleman said I needed to make an "appointment" at the kiosk, which I started to do at the kiosk computer, however I could not figure out the type of service (e.g., New customer) I needed to select. Unfortunately, their was no available person that usually stands near the Kiosk to assist me or other customers if questions arose. The police officer was not helpful at all and did eventually get up from his seat after I requested his assistance several times. Not sure if he was just lazy; did not a good attitude; was not in a good mood this morning, or in need of remedial customer service- but whatever the case- he did not seem to want to help me at all. The older gentleman ("may I help you") basically ignored our plea for assistance, even though it was apparent we needed assistance. In conclusion, both men were not helpful at all and somewhat curt (almost rude) with their response and behavior. I sincerely hope DMV can provide some better customer service training for their employees, especially the staff who work in the the entrance area (near front door) of this particular Walnut Hill DMV express office. This place is what you'd expect of a DMV. It's a mixed bag of people who are genuinely glad to be here to help, mixed with some people who wished they didn't work here and the attitude to match. I've been coming to this location on and off for years and it's always a gamble which type of person I'll get. I had to come in today to renew something and the first lady that helped me was okay, but compared to the other people I interacted with who were actually upbeat and glad to assist. I just seemed like another number, so it's an alright location but you get a mixed bag of helpfulness mixed with often attitude or rude. It's a DMV though so my expectations are always tempered with both hopeful preparedness because you'll want to make sure you have all your documents and things in order before you arrive. Please make TWO appointments for services. I finally got an appointment after a month long wait for drivers license renewal and title registration. Turns out they can only work on one service with one appointment. I got my license, but have to make another appointment for title registration. Next available appointment is after two months!! They wanted me to make a second appointment on the same day for title registration. The website doesn't mention requiring different appointment for different services. Wait times are long despite making appointment. My appointment was at 4:30. I waited for an hour to renew license. read more

Not sure why it took 25 minutes just to turn in some old tags. There should be a drop box and a kiosk that can turn this into an automated process, instead of waiting in line for a transaction that took less than 60 seconds. Plus, the system called the last 4 numbers before mine, then skipped mine and called a few other numbers before coming back to me. You can bet that I was not happy about that. I had to visit the MVA Express after having to get my license renewed. I was about 4 months behind schedule and when we were trying to sell our car we couldn't complete the transaction until I could get an unexpired license. There's motivation for you! We went around 10:30 on a Friday and it wasn't too crowded, the place was clean, the staff member who met us as we walked in had a smile on her face and asked what we were in for. We grabbed a number and waited. Less than 20 minutes later it was my turn. I sat down, had my picture taken, took the vision test, hubby paid and a few minutes later my name was called and I got my shiny new license. We proceeded to the car place, made the transAction, went back to the MVA EXPRESS grabbed another number, sat down, opened my book, number comes up after I read two sentences, we turn in our old plates, get a receipt and are back in the car in about 5-6 minutes! As a new(ish) resident to Maryland I knew I had to get a new Drivers license within sixty days #trivia. I went online and the MVA website was super helpful. I was able to find information on everything from changing names to getting your first license. The website even has a list of everything you need to bring before coming in for your services. After reading through everything online I made an appointment for this location. I showed up ten minutes prior to my appointment and was pulled out of line due to having an appointment. My number was called about five minutes after my schedule time which wasn't a huge deal. I had everything I needed and after taking my photo and completing everything I was told I needed photo copies of everyone on my lease. This made ZERO sense. The only person the state of Maryland cares about in this situation is me. I had my passport, current drivers license, original social security card, bank statement with my new address, and my current lease. This was everything the website told me to bring, no where did it say photo copies of rommmates IDs. The woman was so rude and asked why I wouldn't have brought other documentation. I informed her that the utilities are in the landlords name and I'm not in school so I brought what I had. I left without my New drivers license and wasted SO much time. I ended up calling the MVA hotline (don't ever do this) to ask if this information was correct. The woman who finally answered after twenty minutes told me she's in a call center and couldn't confirm if it was needed. Wow, how helpful... not. I ended up getting the photo copies of my roommates IDs and headed to the other MVA because this one is a joke. The other location looked at me like I was crazy when I explained what happens and insisted that photo IDs of rommmates are not needed. I wouldn't recommend coming here espically if you're new to the state because you literally have no idea what's true or not. read more

I love this MVA Express and very much prefer it to the other bigger Gaithersburg location. Every time I've come here, employees have been friendly and efficient. They deal with some really difficult and mean customers sometimes, and most of the time it's not their fault and they are trying their best. I appreciate their friendliness and help during times I've needed it, such as when I needed to replace my lost driver's license. I simply used the kiosk, which was so easy and painless. I was in and out in 15 minutes. I am very grateful for everyone who works here and wish people would have a little more patience when dealing with employees. They are people as well handling many different issues all day long and it's not their fault you're in a rush and can't wait your turn, especially during rush hour. 24hr Kiosk Didn't Work!! While the officer on-site was polite in informing me the branch was closed (that I did know), he also directed me to the location of the 24hr self serve kiosk. Unfortunately ... IT WASN'T WORKING!! This was the SECOND branch I had driven to, in attempt to renew my registration. I don't get off in time enough to make it to a branch before they close, and I didn't want to wait on a sticker through the mail. I tried looking up what documents I needed to bring to get it done and they offer no direction on what you need to show them I've gone twice now and both times was told I needed different documents and was turned away again. This MVA is an oasis of efficiency and awesomeitude (shut up, it's a real word), in the sea of crappy MVAs that plague our lives. For the past month, my parents have been calling every day to remind me to get my driver's license renewed. However, like a truculent 14 year old, the more my parents want me to do something, the more I resist and dig in my heels. So lo! Before I realized it, it was going to expire that day! I book it down there on the night of my birthday, in hopes to get it renewed by the hair of my chinny-chin-chins...but of course, they close at 4:30. Which makes no sense, but then, many things in this world makes little sense to me. So on Saturday, I book it back over to the MVA and this time, I stroll in and grab a number. I sit down, and before I could finish tweeting and updating my FB with whining about spending a hungover Saturday morning in the MVA, my number was called! I get to the counter, and I tried to look pitiful (not hard on an early Saturday morning), and began the epically tragical song and dance about why my license had expired. But before I could even being to tack on the "it wasn't my fault..." the lady at the counter waved away my tale of woe and told me to look into the eye exam machine. Bam! Done! She asked a few questions about being an organ donor (yes), being registered (no), and the next thing I knew, she was taking my picture and telling me how utterly adorable and hilarious I was. Which of course, made us BFFs right there on the spot. All in all, I was done in less then 10 minutes. My husband, who had dropped me off, while he ran to get coffee for us, took *way* longer. I can't believe it, but that was probably the most efficient government building that I've ever been to! I was in and out, and the lady was fast but pleasant. As I hung around the MVA Express office waiting for my husband to return with coffee, I noticed that they got people in and out with a minimum of fuss. Wow. Much less crowded than the full service MVA. You won't feel like large ranch cattle being herded, more like small ranch cattle. Still, don't go there on a Monday, you will have to wait, and wait, and draft another Yelp review on your phone. Now (2 weeks later) that I have finished renewing my driver's license, a word of caution. If you are a foreigner like me, make sure you have all the innumerable documents that the Department of Homeland Security and the paranoid Patriot Act require, otherwise you will be visiting the MVA quite a number of times. read more

Absolutely the best MVA / DMV experience I have ever had! First of all, Maryland has recently adopted an online appointment system which seems to have successfully streamlined their flow / day-to-day fluctuation of visitors. Traditionally I envision myself sitting in a crowded room waiting at least an hour to be seen. Here, I would say the waiting room was at 33% capacity. I got in at around 8:50 for a 9:30 appointment. Went to the desk where the gentleman at the desk told me that I had to wait until at least 9:15 to check in for a 9:30 appointment. No problem. At 9:15 am I came back and checked in. By 9:20 I was sitting at a booth. By 9:38 I walked out the door with my Maryland driver's license. For the icing on the cake, the employees at this location that I encountered seem to be genuinely happy and friendly with customers. read more
