They never call you with test results or any follow ups. You have to call for them and they want you to make an appointment to get them - so they can get another co-pay. Then when you follow up they act like you are an inconvenience. Their only concern is getting a lot of people in and out of the office for more money. Point being you never see the doctor.

Getting in here for a "sick visit" can be tough. They are booked so far in advance that it's hard…read moreto get in if you actually have something wrong. I also have the impression that the office staff are not fully competent. For example, scheduling a 12:15 ultrasound, but the entire office is closed between 12-12:30. Empty waiting room, not answering phones and a closed window. Why are you scheduling people at this time? (I waited over 30+ min in a totally empty/quiet room). When I tried to ask if I was at the wrong time once the glass window finally opened, the lady was quite rude. Over the years there's been several "misunderstandings" with the office people. But it's not like I'm going to go find a new Dr or anything, so we just deal with it.

However, I did not know this until after I got to the hospital. When you're 37+ weeks along, it would have been nice to know in advance when your doctor isn't going to be around. But, there are bigger issues. Dr. Reining was the on call doc. Things were moving quickly. I got to the hospital around 4:45 am and delivered at 9 am. The baby's heart rate had a significant drop. My daughter was delivered by the hospitalist OB via forceps and an episiotomy. Dr. Reining came in after I delivered. Didn't say a word to me, and left. I was upset about this and wanted to discuss it with Dr. Meyer during my 6 week PP appointment. After all, when it's your first baby and: 1.) Your usual doctor isn't around 2.) The on call doc from her practice doesn't show up on time and there's an emergency. 3.) The hospitalist OB, although he was completely professional, delivers your baby using forceps. (Most younger docs would have used a vacuum.) It's a scary experience. I understand that OBs' can't be at the hospital all the time, nor do I expect them to be, but like I said, things were moving fast. I wanted to feel heard. Instead, she got defensive and snippy. I won't get into the details, but I felt patronized and dismissed when I brought it up. All I wanted was an apology and some understanding from her or Dr. Reining, but apparently that was unreasonable. I never expected to see Dr. Meyer in that light. Her personality went from hot to cold. But I lost all respect for her as a person and a doctor. For other reasons, like appointment providers being switched without my knowledge or consent, hour or more waits for the majority of appointments. I felt like a second rate patient at this practice. At one point during our conversation, Dr. Meyer told me, "If coming here troubles you, you can go to a different practice". That's exactly what I'll be doing. To anyone reading this...I would advise you to do the same. When it mattered, the doctors' and staff in this practice let me down in every way possible. I chose a practice of predominately younger women for a reason. Not the hospitalist OB who was older male doctor with antiquated techniques. I was looking forward to the wonderful experience everyone seems to have. Sadly, I got the opposite and was basically told to leave when I expressed my concerns.

I called SLUCare on the search for a new Primary Care Physician, and they happened to have an…read moreappointment open with Claire Shapleigh in a week, which is uncommon for primary care. I did a quick google and decided to go ahead and check her out, she is a Physicians Assistant which I actually prefer. I saw the same Pediatric Physician my whole life, then switched to Family Medicine where I was another 9 years, so I've been anxious to find someone new in St. Louis where I recently moved. I'll tell you what, Claire didn't disappoint. And to be honest, I think I like her better than my Pediatrician AND first adult physician combined. She was warm and inviting, listened to everything I had to say, had great advice, and was super knowledgeable. She's also trained on Pap smears, so for the women out there, check her out, she's a one stop shop. She would be an amazing provider for anyone. I could go on forever about how amazing she is, but you're just going to have to check her out yourself. If you're on the search for a new primary care provider, look no further, Claire is your girl!

Since SLUCare is associated with St. Louis University School of Medicine, the doctor you see consults with fellow professors, and instructs and mentors students. I think there's a lot of competency and accountability built into a connected system like this, and that makes me more confident about the quality of care I'm receiving. Of course, sometimes it means that an extra doctor or medical student is sitting in on your exam. This may not feel so wonderful if you're shy. In my case, when a couple of young doctors peel back my privacy gown to check me out, it just means I have more material to weave into the tall tale I tell my wife. During last week's visit, I started out with obligatory stops at stations for insurance-billing, registration, and nurse medical history review. Then, since my last dermatologist recently moved out-of-area, I was introduced to Dr. Tarbox, whose manner was just about the best I've ever experienced in a physician. She immediately made me feel comfortable, really listened to me, did the full-body skin check, explained thoroughly what she was seeing, went away while the nurse pricked the needles in to numb me up, then carried on a pleasant conversation while she sliced and bandaged my face and neck. After about a week, you can look at me and not cringe - I am no longer hideous!

This is because, we now know, the doctors are all paid more if they have 100% compliance for vaccinations for all their patients. Recently at a congressional hearing we found out that pediatricians are being paid by the HMO insurance companies for vaccinating kids. Payment is $200-$600 per child. Many pediatricians making $1 million a year just for vaccinating kids. Practices must keep a certain percentage of patients at 100% vaccination rate to qualify for the payments. Pediatricians stop seeing kids as patients whose parents refuse vaccinations. This is not about health. It's about doctors and insurance companies making millions and billions per year each. It was crushing. My child's former pediatrician who assisted with the getting the exemption due to what he termed 'adverse reaction' and the exemption was granted, retired and moved out of state. He even called them but they would not honor his calling to talk to the new prospective doctor. They are monsters there.

She is patient in sharing her expertise and has a kind way of interacting with my child. Now after the birth of our second baby, Dr. Shilpa sees both kiddos. I like that the exchange is very accessible and easy to use. We've called many times during off hours to reach a nurse from Children's hospital. They'll either answer our questions immediately or they'll contact the on call pediatrician and then call us back. It's pretty straightforward to schedule a sick visit the same day, though if you call right at 8:30 when their phone lines open, you might have to wait on hold for a few minutes. The nurses and other staff are usually very pleasant and helpful. I highly recommend Southwest Pediatrics and especially Dr. Shilpa to anyone looking for a pediatrician in south city!
