A guy walked in to the Dutch restaurant to try his new pick up line on a girl. Hello, are you from the Netherlands? Because Amsterdamnnnnnnn you look good. Orange specks throughout the restaurant, windmills and that blue and white china pattern that they love ever so much. Now we're just missing tulips on the tables and 6'6 tall servers walking in clogs. It's all about the pancakes here. Meat, savory, fruit, cream, ice cream. Beer, wine, coffee, your choice. They have three locations in central London. We tried the proffertjes which is 16 mini pancakes about the size of a body of Christ they give you in church. Served with whipped cream, plenty of berries and some powdered sugar. Internal restaurant acoustics are terrible, like when you are talking and have to say huh, what all the time. The catty group of ladies loudly OMG-ing over each other didn't help. read more

An institution of 50 years... this restaurant is popular with local families - probably because the food and casual atmosphere (and relatively low prices) are very family-friendly compared to a lot of the other surrounding dining options. While there are a few token starter and salad options on the menu, the bulk of it centers around, you guessed it, pancakes. But not just your typical butter and powdered sugar topped variety - no, they've gone the creative route. Greek with halloumi and olives and tomatoes, Mexican with chilli meat and guacamole, or even make your own...the savory pancake options are limitless. By far the most impressive thing about these pancakes is their presentation (and not just because, for whatever silly reason, the kitchen is located in the basement so the servers have to run up and down a massive staircase just to get your pannekoeken to you - I feel bad for them, dashing up those stairs all day long...how do they do it?) as the other reviewers have noted - the pancakes are served on these unbelievably massive platters of blue windmill pattern pottery, so the initial appearance is rather grand, even if the product itself is not-so-much. In truth, these pancakes are really nothing more than open-faced crepes, scattered rather scantily with toppings that the French would never deign consider for their own signature thin confection; very reminiscent of nouveau pizza. I had the Italian and found it too-greasy to the point that I couldn't finish it, and the toppings inadequate in quantity and unimpressive in quality. Certainly not my favourite restaurant on King's Road, but definitely one that would please a crowd; especially a crowd that involves kids. read more

As you can imagine when a friend of mine told me there was a restaurant that specialized in crepes, my eyes glittered with hope and excitement. Too much glitter, too soon. As it happens my expectations were just too high or really it just wasn't that good. The salty crepes are sort of a water down version of a really nice italian pizza. They place the crepe on a very large ceramic blue plate (with windmills printed on them) and the ingredients are scattered on the top. The crepe was not fresh and the cheese and tomato barely covered the highly floured crepe. The food was even a bit cold when it arrived. I won't go back, maybe the sweet crepes are of a higher quality but I'd rather not know. read more

I've been here several times now, and can declare My Old Dutch to be a thoroughly A-OK place. In some areas it's better than this. In others, worse. Overall? A-OK. Let's start with the pancakes. They're not going to rock your world. They're not going to take you to the streets of Amsterdam or even Paris. But they will sustain you adequately. They're huge, probably approaching 14 inches (35 cm) in diameter. The savoury ones come in a variety of toppings. My favourite is the smoked salmon, cream and mushroom one, though I've had the Hawaiian one too (indeed, many of the other toppings seem quite pizza-like). The sweet ones start with the standard basic ones (lemon & sugar, maple syrup) and extend to fancier ones (e.g. chocolate, ice cream and banana). Come here on a Monday and you can gorge on any of these pancakes for a bargain £5. There's other stuff going on at My Old Dutch too, and it's a little hit and miss. The poffertjes and waffles I've had have both been disappointing: dry and rather tough in the first case, and straight out of a packet in the second. On the other hand, the beer and American-style 'Butterscotch' pancakes are definite hits. The beer range is comprised of the better Belgian fruit beers, and at reasonable prices too (around £4 for a bottle). The American-style 'Butterscotch' pancakes are good-enough, if at rather average value for 4 small pancakes for £6. Still, they're freshly made, which is not something you can take for granted in London-town. The service meanwhile is good: quick, helpful, friendly. Overall, it won't likely change your life, but still worth stopping by if you're in the mood for pancakes and it's a Monday or you need a American-pancake fix. read more

This is the place that introduced me to my love of sweet crepes! I used to go here at least once a week when I lived in London a few years ago. They have sweet and savory (pretty standard), but be prepared for a huge crepe unfolded on your plate. My fave was the plain with powder-sugar, but many others with veggies and cheese are very popular. Cute small tables to munch away at and it's the perfect spot if you are being indecisive and want a filling, yet inexpensive fix. Great food, overall good service, and nice place. Took same day reservations for a large group and wasn't busy at 10:30am on a Sunday. By noon it was packed, so my advice would be to make reservations or arrive before the brunch/lunch crowds. A couple negatives: One of the drinks was forgotten. No big deal; we told the barista. Then the manager came over and started snapping at the barista. Unprofessional! The manager should have just apologized, instead of belittling the staff in front of customers. If you're in the area, this is a filling and crowd pleasing breakfast. Not a 'destination brunch' by any means, but I have and will continue to return when it is convenient. Could it be better? Most certainly. Don't call it maple syrup. It certainly is not maple in origin. In America, we call this stuff "Pancake syrup" or "butter-flavored syrup," as there is no maple even in the ingredients. Not to say that the stuff they serve up here is awful, it just ain't maple. 'My Old Dutch' is a mini chain of 4 pancake houses. This Chelsea branch on King's Road is my choice of where to go for a GOOD pancake in London. The savoury ones include your regular Ham/Bacon & Cheese style offerings and more quirky ones like Chilli Con Carne or Smoked Duck. I am not a huge fan of savoury fillings but there is nowhere better in the UK I have yet tried. The sweet ones are what I usually go for and like the Banana, Chocolate & Nuts and the Apple or Pear Cinnamon. You can also "choose your own" with extras like Nutella available. The Waffles are excellent and if I DO go for a savoury pancake I still manage one of them. Prices are on the expensive side with savoury ones around £9.50 and sweet ones for £7 or so. Fries are good but at £4 they had better be. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! read more

My Old Dutch serves the biggest pancakes in town that I know of. I've been going there for years but haven't been in a while to find that they have stripped their cosy kitsch look for something sleeker, more modern and more generic, though they still serve the pancakes on these beautifully painted huge plates so some things are the same. I chose the smoked duck, something they had removed from their menu but brought back and to be honest, it was a little disappointing as in the old days you were given thick slices of duck breast rather than paper-thin slices of duck whatever. The peppers were also over cooked and a bit greasy and there wasn't enough sauce. The others, who like me, have worked on Kings Road and therefore eaten many a time here, ordered different pancakes like the Greek. Debs, thought it was too much batter and not enough cheese and Marie, was pretty disappointed with her Greek pancake too. The sweet pancakes such as the one dusted generously with icing sugar and served with three fat lemon wedges went down well and I have to say, my banana milkshake was really good. However, they also got the timing for Marie's birthday cake wrong and we thought there was a blackout for ten minutes when no cake emerged, so service was not exactly tip-top. However, if you are coming here the first time, come on a Monday as all pancakes are £5, which makes trying it out all the more better. I, was disappointed however, as knowing what they used to serve and experience what they offer now, maybe it's time to bring back the chintz. read more

This restaurant chain with 3 locations in London has been on my list for a while, but I never made it there before I started hanging out more in South Kensington and Chelsea. In fact, I find their choice of locations very weird - Who goes to brunch in Holborn? And what person living in the posh neighbourhoods of South Kensington and Chelsea want to go to a place that does simple pancakes for £10? We went on a Sunday morning right after it opened at 10 AM, and there were two families in the restaurant but it was otherwise empty. It's quite a large space with both a ground floor and a basement, both rather spacious, and the waitress was very attentive simply because she was so bored. We asked why it was so quiet and she said that it typically gets busy from 12 PM to 2 PM, so I guess people in the area like pancakes for lunch, rather than breakfast. I ordered the My Old Dutch savoury pancake, which comes with smoked bacon, chicken, ham, bell pepper, mushrooms, corn, and cheese. It was enormous and would definitely have been enough to feed two people. It was the size of those large pizzas that Italian restaurants try to pass off as personal pizzas, but in reality a normal person would struggle to finish it. At least it is super thin, much more so than even a thin crust pizza, and the toppings were in good proportions, so I did not feel like I was having too much of anything. The smoked bacon was Canadian style bacon. My friend got the butterscotch pancakes with bacon and eggs, which was a totally different thing with American style pancakes in a stack, crispy American style bacon, and your choice of eggs. The only thing was that they didn't have maple syrup and had instead Dutch style syrup, which was much thicker and tasted like caramel. It was good that we got such different meals, as two of the Dutch pancakes would have been too much! The food was good and the service was friendly and fast, but this place was not all that exciting and I'm not in a rush to come back. It does have a unique proposition in London, though, as I certainly don't know anywhere else that does these pancakes. It makes sense for a family outing when you have many mouths to feed and want to keep the costs down, but I much prefer the vibe of busy, trendy restaurants with good coffee and a great eggs benedict. read more

I love this place. The pancakes are what you'd expect - Dutch. You can get very similar pancakes in Holland. The pancakes look massive when they bring them to you, but because they are so thin, it's not as much as it seems like at first glance. I go for the savory veggie versions and if I can manage it, share a sweet version for desert. They're a bit more pricey than I like so I try to get one of the specials when I can. But when you add in a Dutch beer, it's a truly wonderful meal. read more

One large pancake/crepe is a fabulous way to start the day. I chose to make my own pancake with apples, pears and honey and it was delicious. I would say a dutch pancake is more like a crepe than a pancake but it is topped with icing sugar and it is breakfast goodness! This is an old favourite of mine - it's not a creperie in the French sense, they treat their pancakes more like a pizza: big pancake base served flat with a wide choice of different toppings. I'm always surprised at how filling the pancakes are, they really are huge. They have also added a range of delicious milkshakes to the menu. Great every time and I can't wait for my next visit! If I could give 4.5 stars, I would. My mother and I went to the one in Chelsea for some sweet crepes. First of all, even though it says pancakes they're actually crepes. Second, the crepes are huge and will not be folded (which can be annoying). They do have gluten free crepes which we thought was excellent. We ordered nutella crepes and they bring the nutella in a little cup. The crepes were really good, although they could've been warmer (the reason for our 4.5 and not 5 star rating). My children love eating at My Old Dutch. The menu is full of savoury pancake choices, but my lot usually go for something sweet, like maple syrup and banana. The plates are huge and the pancakes cover the whole plate, so you feel totally stuffed by the time you've finished. The menu is very inspiring, i didnt think it was possible to get a better vaiation than lemon on sugar on my pancakes until i went to my old dutch. However it does take time for your pancake to be made and it seems to me that their waiting staff do tend to have their hands full a lot of the time. Having saying that they do have great offers such as monday madness where all pancakes on the menu are for a fiver, which in some cases is nearly half price. This is well worth your money as i have never been able to finish my pancakes, not because theyre not tasty but because of their humongous size which seems to fill their wooden tables and my appetite to say the least. I have been here a couple times before and everything was fine. After my second time, I was given a loyalty card that allowed you get a free pancake after a certain number of visits. Two of the spaces were initialed by the server. However, after my most recent visit, a staff member said that the initialed spaces were invalid and that they needed a stamp instead. After ordering a pitcher of water, we realized that it had obviously not been cleaned as there were bits of food floating around inside. I love(d) this place and would visit frequently, usually opting for the chelsea branch which has the best service. However, recently the portion sizes and quality of the food have gone down hill. Specifically I used to feel this place served the BEST strawberry milkshakes and I would happily pay almost £4 for a good ice cream laden shake. Now the milkshake is constantly heavily watered down with milk and is disappointing and clearly no longer worth the price. The same goes for the monday £5 deal, where the sizes are smaller and more slap dash than the regular weekly service. I don't know how many more times I would visit this place now. read more

Ordered a full English breakfast from separate section of menu (there was no mention of a pancake in the item description as there was in, for example, the salmon selection). When the food arrived, it was a full English breakfast...cooked into a pancake. Our waiter could tell I was surprised and asked what was wrong. When I told him what I had wanted, he shrugged his shoulders and said, "This is pancake house, so..." and walked away. I knew it was a pancake house, so maybe I should have expected a pancake; maybe I should have asked exactly what I would be getting when I ordered.
