Litchfield Museum & Route 66 Museum - Senior Class Photos

Litchfield Museum & Route 66 Museum

This is such a cute museum and I definitely recommend making a stop if you're traveling on Route…read more66...intentionally. We were doing the east half of Route 66 during our most recent vacation last week and this place is listed on many of the guides. It is SO CUTE and has a ton of Route 66 memorabilia and newspaper clippings. There is also another Route 66 spot right across the street if you need to grab a bite to eat.

If you can't get your kicks on Route 66, you can at least get them at the Route 66 Museum…read more The Route 66 Museum is directly across the street from, Ariston Cafe which is the oldest restaurant on the historical Route 66. Did you know this year is the centennial of that highway? Which is a good reason to do a road trip to Litchfield and visit both places. The majority of the museum is history about the Litchfield, but there's enough about Route 66 to help you learn about this history making road and the importance it had in its hey day. The museum is run by volunteers and is free. They do have a donation box towards the entrance, so be sure to drop a few bucks in, so it can survive. Even better, be sure to buy a t-shirt or postcard in the small gift shop. Outside the museum office is a display about, Martha Jackson who made this museum a reality. One thing that I found extra cool was the display rack that had pictures of the seniors at Litchfield High School from the year Route 66 opened, to this year's graduating class. What a hoot, seeing how class pictures have changed over the years. I'll be going back soon, to take more time looking at the displays. A volunteer was painting and the smell of paint gives me migraines, so I made a quick exit.

What a great little town!…read more I happen to stumble upon Carlinville when I saw a house for sale. The house had been built in 1882 and that very much peaked my interest. I poked around online and found some great information about the history of this town and it all sounded so interesting. We went for a morning visit that Saturday, starting in STL. It was just over an hour to get there. When we arrived we were greeted with a small market in the town square with vendors selling everything from bonsai trees to homemade blackberry jelly to carved wooden items. We decided to drive past to go see the house first and found it easily from memory of the google street views. The house looked awesome, as did so many. You could really feel a history there. Back we went to the square, parked and had a look around. We took some time to look at and take pictures of the Loomis Hotel. What a sight it must have been well over one hundred years ago. We then visited an antique shop right on the corner. Holy crap! It was truly amazing and we made some really good finds there. It was truly an antique shop (with booth vendors) and not the usual homemade soaps, records of singers you've never heard of before, and used pairs of shoes you normally find at these types of stores. We found a desk that had an inscription on the underneath of the fold up top stating the maker of the desk and a date of 1905. We found no reason not to believe it. It was $190 with 20% off. I found that an amazing price for this bit of history. We also found an oak rocking chair with needlepoint seat for $45. $45! I wish we had room at our house because some of this stuff definitely would have gone home with us. After that we went and saw the jail that has a rich history all it's own. I look forward to visiting the inside some day. It sounds just amazing. We then took a short drive to the Ariston cafe in Litchfield which was originally in Carlinville. Again, amazing experience with great staff, good food, and somewhat a feel for how old it was, built in 1935. I honestly recommend a trip to Carlinville. Just driving around is quite a treat if only to look at the houses that scream out old town life. You can easily imagine how this town was 150 years ago it hasn't changed much!
