I have gone to this business for years now I'm 3 different states. This was by far the best of them. The folks that work in the front (hey Pam!) are super sweet. They weren't quite sure how to deal with my exhuberance but they were helpful and friendly. The physician assistant was very business like and didn't want to have light banter and the doctor didn't once look me in the eye. She was too busy reading notes and looking at her tablet. I went in for my first eye exam. The staff and doctor were friendly. When my progressive glasses came in, I couldn't read one word. I was told I needed to get use to them. So I tried for 3 weeks as much as I could. I need to read and use the computer a lot in my job so I couldn't wear them at work. I couldn't see out of them at home either. It turns out there's a lot that you need to be able to see on days off too. After 3 weeks I went back. They said the 2nd exam said the same thing. I told them several times that everything in the test was still blurry even though I can read the words and tell what picture was better, there were no clear options. I told them I wore positive 3.75 strength in my readers again. They increased to positive 2.5. When the glasses came in again, I went to pick them up. Once again I couldn't read out of them. I can read the words but they are still so blurry and they cause bad eye strain, which triggers a migraine. The lady up front then acted like it was my fault for not telling the doctor about the strength of my readers and the blurriness of everything during the exam. I told her I did several times during both exams. They don't listen or believe a word I say. Like, why would I lie? I want to be able to see. It's incredibly frustrating when I can't read and sometimes call people the wrong name because I can't see them clearly with just my readers. She had an attitude and told me somebody would get back to me. Nobody ever did so I have 2 pairs of useless prescription glasses and no exams left since they also only give 1 free exam. I feel like if it's their mistake, I should get as many free exams until they listen and get them right. I was so excited to see and 2 months later I'm still in the same position I was when I started. I'll have to wait for my insurance to cover another exam before I go someplace else. Very attentive staff as well as helpful initially but left to my own vices to pick out my first pair of frames. This ultimately lead to me picking the wrong type as I am not an expert and then being unable to return them leaving me out of a few hundred dollars. The frames were a rigid plastic and difficult to adjust to fit the shape of my head without reverting back to becoming loose and unsteady again after a few attempts. Nice employees and friendly (although quick in her analysis) Doctor but left a little to be desired as far as frames and explanation of lenses and such. read more

I took my son in for and eye exam and that part was fine. Looked at frames and none where covered by insurance get that not all are. The 5ech told us he could get new lenses in his old frames and that was covered so that is what we did. I picked out a pair of frames and had my order done while I was there under insurance paid for my prescription and we left. Wednesday they call me and now say my son cant use his old frames but have to buy new ones but was told different on Monday. Today Friday I was called and said I could not get new frames and had to pay for them even though I have not gotten any glasses this year. Two different people two different situations and apparently know one that works there knows anything about there job. Highly disappointed by there lack of knowledge about any of this as they put this information in the computer and pull up what is coveted and not but days later they tell you something entirely different. MY EYE DOCTOR needs to train there staff properly so other customers do not have to go through the same thing as my family. read more

I'm torn between giving one or two stars for the service I've received. Only because the initial service, that included an eye exam and selecting a pair of glasses was what you would expect. The Optometrist and technician and receptionist were professional, expedient and courteous. However, actually getting the pair of glasses that I picked out is another story. My wife and I both ordered a pair of glasses using my insurance. We were told that it would take 2-3 weeks to receive our glasses. My wife received her glasses at exactly 2 weeks. Me, it's going on 6 weeks and still no glasses. We were told when we went to pick up my wife's glasses that it's common for orders within families not to receive their glasses at the same time since the laboratory doesn't actually process them together. Understandable. My wife called a couple of times after we picked up her glasses to check to see if mine had come in. At 3 1/2 weeks after our appointment, the Manager stated he wasn't sure what was causing the delay but would send my glasses to their personnel lab to expedite receiving them. At 4 weeks my wife noticed on our account that it said my glasses wouldn't be ready until 1 May. My wife was able to speak with the Manager who stated the claim was entered incorrectly for my insurance but the date of 1 May was just a date that was entered in their system , but to expect them before then. Well, like I said, we're almost at 6 weeks and still no glasses. It's unfortunate that good customer service is so hard to find now days. Mind you, not once did anyone from MyEyeDoctor call us to give us a status update. It's as if they feel there isn't an abundance of places to choose from. My advice, go elsewhere because they obviously don't value their customers or at least try to keep their business. read more

Honestly the staff and potential is here but for me they missed the mark completely. My progressive prescription was done incorrectly the first time. Measurements by the staff were not done properly. They got these corrected. Office manager was accommodating. I then ordered a pair for close up computer work and reading. They arrived and I could not see out of them. The manager wouldn't believe me when he checked my strength. He suggested I see the eye doctor. The doctor checked the prescription and determined it was ordered with a strength much to strong. I waited another 3 weeks to get this correct. Manager said he would take care of me. Nothing happened. This clinic needs to train their staff. I was very disappointed at the poor quality service. I still don't have a pair of glasses that are completely correct snd comfortable. Oh yes last week I dropped by to get my glasses tightened. Update: I received a voice mail from a person in management who apologized for the result of my recent visit to their store on Monticello in Williamsburg. This manager said they will provide me with a new pair of glasses with new lenses at no cost. The manager said it is obvious there was an issue with the lenses, probably a manufacturing problem, and they will make it right. I was told it will take a few weeks to get my new glasses so we'll see. I was glad to receive the call from management. read more

Is your vision giving you problems and/or are you due for your yearly vision check? I made an appointment online there for myself and my daughter. That step was easy-peasy. We saw Dr. Ruff and she was great. My daughter has eye problem that I've been trying to get corrected for years, and she really took the time to help her in that situation. It appears as if some correction has been made with her most recent prescription. The optician, Ms. Pam, was so kind and PATIENT with us, especially my daughter, who took forever to select a frame... teens, ugh! I ordered a yearly supply of contacts and received a complimentary pair of sunglasses, which I really love. The staff there is great. It's definitely a more boutique eyeglasses shop, with a smaller selection, but there are still many frames to choose from. My husband even bought his most recent pair of frames there as well. We will most likely be back, since it is so convenient to where we live. read more

The Dr is great don't get me wrong. dr Ambrose was always helpful kind and courteous. However, I will never go back to them again. The insensitivity of the staff is astonishing. My house burned down with my daughter's glasses inside. I was told when I purchased the glasses through them there would be a 1 year one time replacement. When I called to try to get the replacement pair, I was told it doesn't cover "loss" so unless I have the frames to turn in they would do nothing. While I started out very pleased with the doctor and my exam, I will say that is the extent of my pleasure with this establishment. I drove some distance to get here and after my exam, I informed the person assigned to work with me that I would need my glasses mailed to me because I don't know when I would have another day off (I deliver mail). She informed me of the $10.99 fee, and I happily paid. Fast forward to Wednesday 8/18/21 when I get a text AND email that my glasses are ready to be picked up. I immediately called and reminded them that I was supposed to have them mailed to me, they said the notification was a formality and I should have them very soon. When Saturday arrived, I called again (I only live in Chesterfield) and I was told, 'We sent you notice they were ready, did you get it?' Ummm, sir.....they should've been mailed to me! Oh I see! Please let me investigate and call you back on Monday. Monday EVENING arrives and I have heard nothing, so I call back, same gentleman answers....Ms. Walker, I'm sorry but I've discovered that your glasses are still here in the building (it's 5 days past completion now). I'm unsure as to why, but it appears that the FedEX person hasn't picked them up......I'm so very sorry. Longer story short, the glasses left the shop on the 24th and I received them on the 26th. Now let's talk about the case.....I'm not new to glasses, hell, for years I even worked in an eyeglass shop....but I spent GOOD money on a pair of designer frames (COACH to be exact) and they sent my glasses in a generic MyEyeDr case. I don't want that! I have ALWAYS gotten the accompanying case to go with the glasses until now. You don't EVER have to worry about getting my money again, and I'll make sure I spread the word as loud as my voice can carry. read more

I came here last month because I needed to get my eyes examined to see if I needed new prescriptions. I found this place by reaching out to my insurance company and this was an in-network provider and very close to my job. Although it was very last minute I called them up to schedule an eye exam and they was able to squeeze me in for the following day in the afternoon. Every other place I tried to check were saying they were booked until next month due to kids going back to school. I came for my appointment and browsed around for frames as I waited. An associate came walked up to me to see if I needed any assistance and she directed me to the styles that I was interested in. The set up on the wall was somewhat confusing for me because the men and women frames were all mixed in together so I had ask periodically if the frames that I chose were for men. After waiting about 15 minutes I was called to the room in the back where there were a whole heap of eye machines. I swear every time I go get an exam there's some new machine. All I was expecting was the air puffer one that always catches me off guard even when they count down to the puff. I rested my chin on one machine which allowed her to look thru the back of my eyes.. I didn't even know that was a thing. She asked me if I wanted to have pictures of my eyes taken which would allow her to see deep into it and would be able to tell if there were any issues going on in there and I agreed to have that done. My eyes needed to be dilated first to have a good picture taken so she put some drops in my eyes and waited about 15 minutes to have them fully dilated. I did the "This one or this one" exam (I don't know what it's called lol) and discovered my vision is getting a bit worse so I needed a stronger prescription. Time to check out, I found glasses that I wanted and I told the lady at the desk I wanted the glare protection on my glasses. I normally get transitions but I decided against it this time. She measured the distance of my pupils with this eye machine. I paid for my glasses and went on with my day, dilated pupils and all.. I was provided some solar eclipse looking eye protectors though. I was told my glasses would be there in 2 weeks and they were there in like 1 week! I picked them up when I got my text message notification and they were perfect. It game with a little bag with the case, eye glass cleaner and I prescription card. I really enjoyed the whole experience here. read more

I will avoid this business in the future. I went to them a couple of weeks ago in good faith. I grabbed some frames for prescription glasses and a pair of sunglasses to purchase. I returned today to pick up my glasses but they were prescription glasses with regular lenses. I informed them that I had purchased the sunglasses and even refer to the example on their wall. They informed me that I was wrong and that I would have to pay a costly difference to re-order them as sunglasses. I just don't have the patience to deal with them when they could not honor the fact that they made a mistake. read more

The doctor here is really good my husband really likes him. He takes the time to really listen and doesn't rush you in and out. A few members of the staff on the other hand are awful. You need to really watch what they do and make sure they order the right things. read more

This all started with Dr Ruff closing shop at Courthouse Commons (Starbucks, Fresh Market), and then moving in with MyEyeDr down the road on Monticello. One would think that moving to a new location and company that you would carry your professionalism and records with you, but they could not even help me with a frame repair ($$$$), simply broken stems. I called DRAGON and they told me too bad, not quite two years old but you are out of luck, they don't make that model anymore. So, I had to get new glasses and frames and I am out $1400 for glasses in two years! I miss Doctor Sutherland, old school and not more interested in your money. read more

Wonderful service. They got me right in for my appointment. Dr Ambrose was very thorough and explained a lot about my age related vision changes. The techs were very helpful and explained everything insurance covered, copays, etc.... She even texted me when my glasses came in. Here is the kicker, hated my frames and lenses when I got them. 100% on me, just a bad pick. They swapped out the lenses and frame no questions asked. No refund for the price difference but I'm the knuckle head that picked the worst frames for my face so that is on me. Highly recommend!!! read more

Great customer service from all staff members, great hours, and overall wonderful provider for eye care.

I would not recommend this eye doctor if you need contacts. The back room where they have you put your contacts in is sketchy (felt like a storage room). They still use the old puff-of-air machine to check for glaucoma (much better options are available at other locations in town). And they charge twice the amount for contact fittings as other eye doctors in Williamsburg, VA. The staff was friendly, but that doesn't overcome being charged twice the amount that one pays elsewhere. read more

I was a new patient with this office and everything went great with the doctor he seemed very knowledgeable however when it came to ordering new glasses that's another story when they measured my pupillary distance I knew it was going to be wrong they had my look at their nose as they drew dots on the glasses sure enough I got my glasses tired them on and they were completely off I was told one of the staff members you just have to adjust give it a week i couldn't wear these glasses beyond a hour they were so off so I called back and went back in and sure enough it was off well after sending them back off and just receiving them Thursday (it's now Saturday ) my lens popped out yesterday so I went back up today and was told it was Normal for this to happen when I mentioned I didn't think the lens was cut correctly for the frame I've been wearing glasses for 20 years and have me ever had a lens just pop out you can clearly see this lens is not cut correctly does it fit in there yes but it doesn't lock into place I was then told with high prescriptions the lens being thicker can cause that my vision isn't really bad at all I just need them for distance so yea here I am with brand new glasses that aren't cut correctly that keep popping out read more

I came here for an eye exam and to get contacts. I left without contacts, and not knowing the extent of my eye prescription. They charged the wrong insurance and continued to try and up charge me. All I wanted was contacts and to know what my vision was. I continued to call back asking what my vision was and they were unable to tell me without "correction" (wearing glasses). They said I would have to come back for another appointment to receive contacts despite when I called to make my appointment I said I was interested In getting contacts. No one was on the same page in the facility and they were too worried with trying to up-sale me to answer any of my questions. read more

There are so many other better places to go in Williamsburg, I would suggest that you avoid this one at all cost. First of all this review has nothing to do with Dr. Ambrose who is the optometrist at this location. he is absolutely phenomenal! 5-Stars! This review is for the ladies that work the front area where glasses are sold. I consider this group highly incompetent. Three times our glasses were not to specifications as prescribed by Dr. Ambrose. Three times we were called to pickup glasses that were not ready to be picked up. For example, today we were notified that our glasses were ready. We get there and no frames! They asked us where are your frames. Well, we gave them to you because the prescription was wrong. The glasses came with lens and frames! Previously, your lab failed to add the bifocals and you failed to quality control at receiving to make sure they were ready. The frames had the lenses intact and you packaged them up for the lab while we were there. You called us today to say they're ready and here again you failed to quality control check them against what you sent out. We asked what next and you stated you need the frames and just looked at us. Your lab has the frames you sent them. Finally they understood they had to ask the lab for the frames. I left the store and well let's say the issue boiled. I went back in (no more than 5 minutes after leaving) and I asked them do you understand you share in the responsibility for these problems. Which are now systemic? They would not acknowledge that. I repeated myself stating that it's your responsibility to quality check the glasses and materials you receive from the lab. Still no acceptance. My next comment, it's time to take a picture of this group because this is truly what stupid looks like! I will not buy glasses from this location and I highly recommend others find another source for eye glasses...this one doesn't get it anymore! read more

I used to come here for many years, however a couple years ago the staff has changed, and they changed it for the worst. The employees were rude and gave me looks of disgust when I had problems with my lenses. The Doctor, Dr. Ambrose however is an excellent doctor and you should definitely see him, but I strongly suggest not buying your glasses from here. The employees do not seem to know what they are doing, they rarely take your measurements that are necessary for fitting your prescription to the frames you choose. (Basically they don't take your OC (ocular center, the center of your pupils), which is necessary so the center of the lenses match the center of your pupils to give you the best possible vision you could receive, even if you are single vision, if you have a high prescription it makes a huge difference, if that measurement is off by a even two millimeters, you could be getting headaches like I did. They offended me greatly even though I was a paying, loyal customer. read more
