(please read updated comments at the end of this review) Friendly staff, plus a kind and respectful healthcare provider. Unfortunately, that's not where the saga ends. Their billing practices are flawed. In April of 2025 I tried this practice for an eye exam. They told me I had insurance coverage, which was a pleasant surprise. They collected my $90, and I was on my way. Months later I got a bill for an additional $210 (a violation of the No Surprises Act). I called the office, and the woman I spoke to told me the bill didn't look right, looked really messed up, and she would do some further research and get back to me promptly. I was very happy with how she handled the call, but I never heard back. I've since called on three separate occasions. On one of the occasions, I was told the practice outsources all their billing and they couldn't help me if they wanted to. I asked for a reasonable timeframe to hear back, and the woman told me 48 hours. That was grossly inaccurate. I'd call a fifth time, but this practice has clearly demonstrated that won't be effective. My time is valuable, and 19 weeks after my initial appointment this mess still hasn't been resolved. Perhaps someone will get back to me after reading this review. UPDATE: promptly after I posted this review, Caitlin from the practice called. She was polite, forthright, and literally used the phrase "We take ownership" for the mistakes that happened. Bottom line: these people are human, they made mistakes, and though they took too long to rectify the problem they ultimately made it right. If I could give no reviews for this place, I would. I went because they had so many positive reviews. Makes me wonder if those were paid for!! My son went and was billed for $189 outside of his insurance. The co-pay for the exam was only $10, how did he come away paying $189. They told him he needed a comprehensive exam, which he assumed was part of the regular eye exam. They nickeled and dimmed him for test that an older person should have. He's only 22. I have since educated him on how businesses will take advantage of you if you are not 100% sure on what you need and don't need before you get there. This place will absolutely take advantage of you and your money. Be very aware!!!! He literally paid for services that were medically unnecessary and I will filing a complaint the licensing board for this today!!! read more

Love! My son has been seen by several doctors at the practice and all have been absolutely incredible. Always explaining things to him in terms he understands and answering any questions he may have. When another son (not a current patient) had an eye emergency, they got him in within 15 minutes of my calling, telling me not to worry about giving information over the phone as they could pull it from my other son. Once again the doctor we saw was incredible and ensured my son's vision was not in jeopardy. Recently I went for my own vision -- affected by a dysautonomic disorder and while many other eye doctors have dismissed me over the years, Dr. Pierce knew exactly what I was dealing with, still made sure it wasn't just my eyes and is working with me to to ensure I find a solution for my uncommon situation. Frankly surprised by the negative comments, however most seem to have the same complaint, billing issues, which frankly seem like issues with people not understanding the own coverage or what is and is not in network. I paid $90 for myself and my son at that joint appointment. That's $45 each. I also had every exam in the book as we were trying to ensure it was not a retinal issue or worse. When I've needed anything the women at the front have gone above and beyond. I needed my son's prescription sent to me to order his glasses as I prefer a style provided by an online provider, and since they were on the phone with other patients, I received a text message asking how they could help -- I had the script emailed to me in less than 5 minutes. I was here recently with my brother who is severely disabled the assistant we worked with was wonderful I believe his name was Manual. However there were two black girls that I can only imagine they were also assistants since they were in uniform and quickly scrambled as I walked by, they smelled that of marijuana and were talking very loudly and poorly about someone and saying horrible things, I could clearly hear them in the waiting area. The taller one was talking about "fighting someone" while the other one just kept giggling. Very unprofessional, the management needs to reevaluate that situation. read more

If you wear rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses like me, then I do not recommend this place. As far as the staff and doctor they were very nice but never been in an exam room that the assistant acted surprised I didn't bring my own contact lense case and the only boston saline was in another exam room, which a patient was in there so he couldn't get it. This is an eye doctor office, right?? So now I'm waiting on my contact lenses to be made which is going on 3 months! Yes, 3 months!! I have wore RGP most of my adult life and have never waited this long, ever!! This is ridiculous! I've called twice, first time they blamed it on the holidays, Honey it's way past the holidays. Second call (24th of Jan.) they said they'd have the doctor call and check on them and let me know next week well, guess what, it's next week and no phone call. I will give them until the middle of February then no contacts I will be demanding my $500.00 back and go somewhere else!! read more

We came to this practice after leaving our long time previous practice (Eye Care Center of Virginia). We had a VERY awful experience at the previous place when they were bought out by Dr Shultz. Colonial Eye Care is awesome. They took care of my family and treated us kindly. Actually told us several people came to them after Dr. Shultz took over the other place. My oldest son needed glasses and they helped us with that. They are patient with my family of three silly boys who ask 5000 questions. The doctor here is quite competent, the office is nice and the staff are very friendly. The reason I gave it only two stars was because of the quality of the glasses I purchased here. I bought, what was for me a fairly expensive pair of glasses. Unfortunately, they seem to be poorly made and the eye and ear pieces rattle around every time I turn my head. By the end of the day I have a headache from wearing these. I went back a number of times to get this fixed and it seems nothing more can be done. SO I am stuck with an expensive pair of back-up glasses and had to go back to wearing my old frames. So go here for the doctor but maybe think about getting glasses somewhere else. read more

Doctor Brent takes time to explain your eye exam so that you can understand it. We like the procedure to take pictures of our eyes so he can compare them from year to year as we age. I've had glasses since 1st grade and going to the optometrist was never my favorite activity, so when I needed to get new glasses I dragged my feet for months. After going to a number of places to shop around I found Colonial Eye Care. Hands down they have the best customer service of any of the places I've ever been. The staff was accommodating, friendly and knowledgeable. When there was a snag with my insurance, the optician spent a good 30 minutes on the phone with the insurance company on my behalf to make sure I was getting the best price. I really would have given them a high rating based off of my eye exam and the physician but now I've waited more than 3 1/2 weeks for them to correct my lenses. I choose this practice keeping in mind it was not a Walmart or mall MD and lens location. Now I'm wondering, after paying close to $400 if this was the right choice. I have to keep calling to find out what is going on with my new lenses. They on the other hand keep blaming it on "shipment" problems. This baffles me when this is the generation of shipping overnight and next day. Makes you wonder. Think twice about this location.
