We've been seeing Dr. Malcolm (Richardson) since he moved from Sunnybrae years ago. We absolutely love him! He is so gentle with our pups and they get excited just driving by. Our boy, Diesel, started acting weird and not eating. We took him in and were told he had a tumor on his spleen. He went downhill fast. When we took him in, Dr. Malcolm met us outside on the grass and gave him a sedative and he rested on his favorite blanket. Dr. Malcolm gave us the time we needed to say our goodbyes. Then the second shot and he was gone. It was so gentle, yet heartbreaking. Dr. Malcolm grieved with us. It's odd that all the reviews are either 5 stars or 1 star. It sounds more like a staffing issue, than anything else, but I've never had a problem. Perhaps they need an in-service training to teach respect, professionalism, empathy, and kindness. Or maybe a Team Building event like bowling. read more

After taking my cat to a specialist who has completed a residency and additional studies in addition to significant experience, they caught low grade kidney disease as well as slightly elevated thyroid levels. She didn't recommend a prescription renal diet, although she gave me some from Hills to see if my cat liked it. The most important think with his triaditis is that he eats or else he risks hepatic lipidosis or diabetic shock, for example, which was I was upset that they didn't see him immediately for his ultrasound, which is a relatively quick procedure. The specialist said it was important to feed him small, frequent meals, but to check the phosphorous levels so as not to damage his kidneys. She also prescribed steroids, and he's gained almost a pound since his visit. Myrtle Ave made a note in my file that I refused medication for my cat, when he didn't have nausea and I didn't think it would help him. They were not only rude and expensive, but also incompetent. read more

I had an horrific experience. My senior cat got extremely sick. vet tech was nice. I asked "is it okay if I record you talking so I can remember how you say it, because the print out of notes is confusing?" and she said yes! and I didn't even record her face or anything I just set it down. well, then the vet came in. Dr. Prado. She was not very compassionate. I politely asked (and my phone was down and not recording ) "Is it alright if I record you talk? It is so much information I get confused" and she immediately got really angry. I am not exaggerating either, she got hostile. It was incredibly inappropriate and unprofessional. "She said no! we do not allow that here! are you recording??" and my phone literally was down in my hand. I was taken aback, kind of like shocked, just stuttered "No Im not thats why I am asking, I asked the tech too she said its okay" this is all happening while I am trying to handle Utred possibly dying, I am alone in this life just me him and my dog. I am not exaggerating she literally grabbed my phone out of my hands. She demanded let me see your photos, and literally touched me and grabbed it herself. She asked me for my passcode and opened up my photos app and scrolled through. Yeah,my personal photos. To make sure I had no recordings of her. She didn't trust me. Why kick me while I am down? It felt terrible. Was uncomfortable after that. After that she explained to me the bloodwork, the levels were off, she didn't know why. She gave me a water dropper, and told him to make sure to give him water. She told me to call right at 8am, and tell the office to get me a same day appointment with the other vet by name cuz she wont be there. She told me to tell the front desk to do the same round of bloowork again to see if there was a change. I later found out that she did not communicate this to her colleagues. I drove away crying bc of the situation and also out of anger and just so many emotions after being treated with so little kindness and outright hostility, which made the whole thing just more stressful. I went home, and i stayed up the entire night watching Utred dying. Feeding him water every few hours, feeling his head go limp at times, me panicking thinking he was dead. My dog laying there on the bed too, looking at me so devastated because she knew what was happening. I stayed up all night long. I counted the hours until 8am. I called right at 8. The front desk answered and I relayed everything she told me, I had written it down. The front desk girl just said "uh no we cant do that." Just shut me down. And I was confused, because I told her what the other vet said. She was talking to me as if I wasn't making sense. She said the other vet wasnt going to take an appointment for more bloodwork beause they did bloodwork the night before. I wasn't being rude, I was being polite, but kept trying as I spent hundreds on a credit card the night before. Then I talked to another front desk girl. She said all I could do is bring him in and they would monitor him. So I politely asked if she could go ask the vet personally and ask him. She was clearly annoyed and was being rude to me. I have worked in all kinds of service industry serving unreasonable people. I am kind and polite and reasonable. I told them multiple times I was just doing exactly what one of their Veterinarians told me to do. Its like they didnt believe me. She came back and said the vet said there was no point for an appointment so just bring him in and they will just monitor and give him fluids. I hung up and thought, no way. Arcata animal hospital had me bring him right in. They were super compassionate and kind, so much more so. Offered me snacks, coffee, put me in my own room. The vet was impressive, caring and just on it. She did all the tests, and was SO thorough. She weighed all options. Immediately she noticed he had unusual muscle loss. How did myrtle avenue not caught that? I thought he was just aging. And also she figured out it was probably neurological just by the exam because the way his feet were folding in. Myrtle didn't catch that either. They were excellent and you could tell the quality and thoroughness of their care, it was like night and day. If I listened to Myrtle Vet, he would have suffered and spent his last hours on this earth in a metal cage with an IV hooked up to him and maybe I wouldnt have been able to say goodbye. I spent hundreds of dollars I didn't have on a CC for nothing. Instead he spent his last hours with me, sitting in the dark, wrapped up in my hoodie, listening to redwood forest sounds on youtube as I whispered to him , giving him prayers as he transitioned into the next plane. He started purring when I did that and he purred until his heart stopped. Myrtle was incompetent and forget how they should treat people whose pets are dying. They do this everyday but I don't. They probably don't remember this but I will never forget. read more

We have had excellent experiences at Myrtle Avenue Veterinary Hospital. We take our cat there for yearly health exams ($88 in 2024) and she has always been treated with care and respect. The clinic is so popular, we schedule many months in advance for preventative visits. When mom's senior cat became ill, we were able to get him in for an exam immediately ($88) and get all the "senior cat tests" Dr. Malcom Richardson recommended to search for every probable problem (less than $200 total for tests). Dr. Richardson was so gentle, sencitive and concerned with our cat, we felt comfident that our cat was receiving great care. When blood work showed that a liver ultrasound was needed (less than $100), we were able to get that scheduled for the very next day. The steroid drug we needed to reduce inflammation was available at the front desk (40 pills, $12.95) and the doctor gave us detailed instructions, telling us what to do and what to watch for. He let us know how to get a prescription for pain management medication if our cat ended up needing it. Although vet trips are never fun, I have always had very good experiences with the doctors, veterinary technicians and office staff here! read more

Beware of this Veterinary Office. If you love your pets, you will take them elsewhere. I had an appointment for my pregnant dog to make sure she and her puppies were healthy. The Vet (Betsy Ninekirk) made it pretty clear she didn't believe in having a litter of puppies. She never came out and said that, but she made a lot of rude comments. I let a lot of unprofessional behavior slide because I felt lucky just to get into a place to make sure my dog was ok. She just didn't seem to give two sh*ts about my dog or her puppies. I'm not a backyard breeder. This was my dogs one and only litter. All the puppies were loved and had loving forever homes waiting. My dog and I are inseparable and she is most important in my life. I'm writing this because Ninekirk actions were negligent and I want her to know that her unprofessionalism and negligence caused loss of life. If you're that miserable and unprofessional, you should consider retiring. What was supposed to be a very exciting time for us was completely overshadowed by her judgey attitude. We did X-rays and my dog had three very healthy puppies but they were HUGE. Vet stated yup, there's three. Should be good. Good luck. I left there feeling anxious and uncomfortable. I knew that the puppies were too big for my small dog. I left there and knew something was wrong. It didn't take a vet to tell me this and when I showed people her X-rays and ultrasounds, they said the same thing. But I trusted the vet. A professional vet would have given some warning right? Not say, yeah she's having a small litter, good luck. When you do some research, small litters are actually much more dangerous because the few puppies get all the nutrients. My dog had another week to go. Well the two huge ones got stuck and didn't make it. The small one made it. I had to rush to another vet office during her pregnancy for fear of my dogs life so they could get the last puppy unstuck. The vet at the office said Myrtle should have said something about their size. I want Ninekirk to know that I fully put the blame on her and that her unprofessionalism resulted in two beloved puppies dying. I write this to warn others. I'm simply devastated, as is my dog, as we lay two of her puppies to rest. Yes, I could have chosen to not have one litter, but I also made that decision knowing her puppies were going to forever homes and were not for profit. I also made sure I had saved money so my dog could have the best care possible. There are no lengths I wouldn't have gone to make sure those puppies were born healthy. Edit: AND they mischarged me. If I hadn't questioned my bill, I would have been overcharged by nearly $400 dollars. I will be filing a complaint with the California Veterinary Medical Board and everywhere else I am able. I strongly believe that the office staff needs to learn how to triage. I sat there on an emergency fee while 10 healthy pets went before me. The vet was good but the staff was rude. My emergency fee was over 300. I was anxious. Why pay an emergency fee when you are not taken seriously? Again someone needs to teach the front desk staff how to triage and good manners. I live in Smith River, my local vet is under evacuation order due to the Smith River Complex fires. His office is currently closed. I called all the other vets in Crescent City, Brookings, Bandon, Coquille, Oregon. NO one could get my boy in, either not taking new patients or maxed out due to the fires. I called Myrtle Avenue Vet Hospital, they must have had a cancellation. She said, can you be here at 2:30? Hot damn!!! I drove the 2 hours to Eureka. They were kind, courteous and efficient. The Vet, Dr. Kylie Tatro was fabulous, more than that she knew her sh*t. What could have become a nightmare was a dream, what could have cost me a small fortune set me back a few hundred. When we moved from Maine back to Eureka after 30 years, we needed to find a vet for our dog and our two cats. My whole family uses Myrtle Avenue veterinary, so that was a no-brainer. They have been amazing over the last several years, and were quick to have us come in with our dog when she got into some chocolate. The doctor was able to reassure us that the dog hadn't eaten enough to need serious intervention, and gave us some treatment options. She said that if it were her, she would take her dog home and watch it, so that's what we did with Duchess. Duchess acted like a crackhead that whole night, and she could not sit still, but ultimately she was fine and we were thankful that the vet did not unnecessarily induce vomiting. We couldn't be happier with them. Great vets, best in the area. That's why they are hard to get into--but worth it when you do. read more

I have a very stressed 12 yr old rescue Chihuahua who suffers from a closed head injury & serious PTSD. He's a terrible biter & must be muzzled for all exams. Dr. Robinson had to extract several teeth, leaving him with a mere seven teeth. I cannot begin to tell you how amazingly well this potentially stressful event went. This appt was Pre Covid and they allowed me to hold him while he was given a light sedative, then we sat in the quiet exam room with the lights dimmed until he was quite calm. I am so impressed with Dr Robinson's patience, calmness & Veterinary skills & knowledge. She is one of those special people who speaks "dog" and displays a true and natural love of animals. A friend whose judgement I trust recommended this place and it did not disappoint. I spent years and 100"s of $ going to another local animal center with dwindling satisfaction. My cat, Arabella had a really really serious case of fleas that nothing was handling. I brought her in, in a box (long story) and the desk staff was super kind to me. Dr. Robinson held her as if she was her own cat. My cat after freaking out and being taken to the vet for the 1st time since she was a kitten who was losing it, was calm and of course no more fleas after Dr. Robinson helped her. Then my other cat, Wednesday had a bad infection. This was at the beginning of Covid and we took her to Dr. Prada (sp?) She was a good match for Wednesday and handled it all beautifully. We've been taking our pets here for years. They usually have all female vets and our pets seem to feel less frightened by soft-spoken female vets. We just had what I hope was the last surgery for our aging dog. She's thirteen now and getting very shaky in the legs from arthritis. She sleeps a lot. I love her dearly and always ask for them to be gentle with her. We have to take her in to get her nails trimmed and anal glands done every 6-8 weeks. Sometimes the assistants do a good job, sometimes not. I've tried to do it at home, but it's hard. If they don't get them clear, she continues to scoot and chew and it can be a real mess. I think this vet clinic is the best in the area. They just moved into their new offices and it's much more spacious and inviting. The staff is always really nice. I would recommend them to anyone in the area looking for vet care. read more

We had been looking for a vet in Eureka for a year and no one was accepting new patients. We have a 10 yr old dog and have been traveling across half the state to our old vet. A few days before Christmas we were blessed with a puppy about 8-10 weeks old who was found in a parking lot. As the newest member of the fam I was anxious to make sure he had the care that he needed. I give this facility 3 stars, because I appreciate that they were able to see the puppy the same day to provide him his first set of shots and set up an appt schedule as a new patient despite them telling us previously they would not accept our 10 yr old dog. The twist is that they WERE willing to accept the 10 yr old dog as a patient now that we were in the system since they were only accepting puppies as new patients. Strange loophole... but, thanks? Seemed a little odd, but considering care is most important I did not look a gift horse in the mouth. What made me step back is that unlike other vets where you accompany your animal in the room... someone just came out, took our puppy from us to another room, and then handed him back a minute later and that was it... kind of impersonal and when we asked exactly what the shot was so we were clear and what the series of shots consisted of and when... he did not know what he just gave our puppy, nor could he tell us what was next or when. I was not confident in my interaction so we're continuing to look elsewhere where it feels like they care more about the patients and not just pushing animals in and out without the knowledge to articulate what they were doing... read more

This has both good and bad. Maybe a little TMI but I wanna give my full review in as much detail as I can on what happened and the service were given here. At the beginning of February, we took our small dog in because her eyes were really bad. She couldn't keep them open for very long and we noticed they were getting cloudy and had slimy stuff in them. We kept her eyes clean and put saline in them to flush them out. We figured it must've been allergies because one we live in a gulch area or two because a couple of days before that she sniffing around in a bush that a skunk had sprayed and we thought maybe she got something in her eyes from that. Thought it was because she was in heat and was on her period. We thought maybe she's gotten some blood or something in her eye and she got an infection from it. She wouldn't eat drink and barely wanted to go out and go potty. potty time is her favorite time because she gets to run around more. She would run into things and looked so helpless. During this appointment they also did an ultrasound on her uterus we didn't know until afterward. (Which upset me up because I didn't have a whole lot of money at the time and they knew this.) they came out and told us that she had pus/liquid in her uterus and an eye infection. So they gave us a round of antibiotics and eye drops and sent us home. The antibiotics and drops worked just fine and she was eating again and feeling better. Then 2 weeks later we noticed that she wasn't eating again and just wanted to lay there and not do anything she was having discharge from her vagina it turns out it wasn't blood. We called the vet to get her in and we didn't have a whole lot of money as we had just spent almost $400 2 weeks ago for the first appointment. They told us on the phone we need to get home ASAP and it could be serious and deadly from the details we had given them. I told them I was afraid to make an appointment because I didn't have the money to pay them if there was a need for anything serious to be done. We were stressing it for a good 30 minutes to an hour. We made multiple calls to the vet and called numerous pet charities to see if anybody could help us with the funds and I posted to numerous social media platforms asking if any vets would take payments. No luck. we eventually just said screw it took her to the vet as we did have the money for the appointment fee we would just figure out the rest later. My partner took her and they did an ultrasound and came out and said that my baby needed a full emergency hysterectomy ASAP She had pyometra. If we didn't get her fixed right then and there she wouldn't make it through the night. The doctor was amazing. He was so informative and very nice. The bill was under $2000 but we still couldn't pay the bill but thankfully my neighbor paid $500 towards the bill and the rest of my community called in and made donations and paid our bill in full for us. But there was one random Anonymous donation we didn't know where it came from but we have an idea. So I called the vet later on that day they told us that they had to do a full hysterectomy down to her cervix and that her uterus was so full that the pus was leaking out her vagina and we assumed it was blood since she was in heat and it was not anything new. The doctor told us that she'd made it through surgery just fine and that she did great. We were so happy. Sadly we never got her fixed because when we took her in for her first vet visit 5 years ago the lady told us that it wouldn't be safe to fix her due to her hip issues. She has a laxing platella. We just went to went along with the doctor and didn't get her fixed. I am so grateful for this vet and the doctor Malcolm Richardson He saved our baby, Bella. If it wasn't for him we wouldn't have our baby right now. Of course, all the people that helped him as well we can't forget them. I highly recommend Dr. Richardson. read more

I came in to pick up meds for my dog. I stood at the counter for 4 minutes before anyone acknowledged me and when someone deigned to, all she said was "Yeah"? There was no "how can I help you" or "we'll be right with you". It was just an attitude of "fine, I guess I'll see what you need." I had to book an appointment a month in advance but that's to be expected this late into the pandemic. When I first arrived, I started off a bit annoyed because I was standing outside waiting and a few vet techs passed by and no one said anything to me. A patient was by the door so I didn't feel comfortable approaching it. After she moved, I read the sign saying to sit in your car and call. After that everything ran smoothly! They worked fast, were understanding, and, most importantly, made my (grumpy) dog feel comfortable. Everyone I spoke to knew what they were talking about and could answer my questions as a new and concerned dog mom. I would highly recommend this place, just keep in mind to be patient and polite! My greyhound needed help on Friday. They were very short staffed but were able to help us out and got is in to see Dr Richardson. A wonderful, caring person. He was able to get a large shard of bone out of his mouth. He took great care to keep him stable and with all his the staff they were ale to get him stable once again and we were able to bring our dog home again. An awesome place to go. I've been going to this vet for nearly a year now. First with my 6 year old lab and then with my 3 1/2 month old puppy. They have been nothing but wonderful and perfect. They are always looking out for my dogs best interest and my dogs always leave with the help they needed. The vets and receptionists have all been kind and know us by our dogs now. It does get busy so if you need an appointment, make it as soon as possible and don't expect to get an appointment that week depending on if it's during the holidays or the end of the week. Best time to go is later in the day, mornings are usually the busiest. They don't recommend any unnecessary procedures, they look out for your wallet. They also have a great pet supply store next door with decently priced food and treats. read more

Had to come and leave something to offset these negative reviews. I have two cats, one who needs regular dental cleaning. Was doing it at another place across town that required a checkup first ($80) and then for cleaning it was $800. Also about a month out on appointments. Switched to myrtle and they can get you into an appointment In a week or two, did the checkup before the cleaning for free and the cleaning was $450. Almost half what the other place charged. People complaining about price are simply not familiar with pricing elsewhere, certainly not locally. Staff is polite and actually seem like they love animals, not as cold and clinical as other vets I've been to. read more

I was treated horribly by a receptionist there who attempted to overcharge me, and when I called it to their attention, she was very rude, she ended up threatening to not credit my low income voucher, send me to collections and told me I couldn't bring my dogs back. HumDogs was generous enough to donate funds to help with this procedure and I don't feel like she has the right to take that away. Because as she said, "I'm not honoring it if you don't pay the full bill." She took some off of the bill off at the expense of my puppies well being. She falsified the paperwork and said I refused his pain meds and tranquilizers. I never said I didn't want his medications. Thats not what was agreed on. She should not have taken a disagreement out on a puppy. That's the opposite of someone that works at a veterinarian office should ever do. He just got neutered and needs those medications. A vet came out told the vet tech that she would pay for the meds until they straightened all of it out. She made sure he got his meds and I knew how to give them to him. The Vets and techs are wonderful. The office staff is not. I've been a customer here for over 10 years and never saw this lady before. I've never been treated so horribly there by anyone. I got a next day appointment and staff was amazing! Due to Covid 19, Dr Ninekirk saw my pup without me present, but called while I waited in my car. She was very nice and did not try to upsell me. She helped with my questions and is obviously an animal lover. They checked him over and even clipped a nail that was growing into the nailbed. I was quoted a decent price for dental work and made an appointment to also have this done. Veronica went above and beyond and helped me out when my car battery died! She did not hesitate to help, along with other staff. I would not hesitate to go to this office. Not only do they do a great job, they are kind people. read more

We can't say enough WONDERFUL things about this place!!! Our sweet pup had emergency surgery with Dr. McConnell and her tech Jessie. Not only did she explain everything about Sammie's condition in ways that we could understand it, but she also kept us informed throughout the entire recovery process. She spoke to us with a calmness, optimism, and warm-heartedness that you'd hope for from someone handling your pet's care. She is an extraordinary surgeon, and because of her knowledge and skills, our boy is able to have many more adventures with us! The staff and crew at Myrtle Avenue Vet is welcoming, kind, generous, friendly, knowledgeable, and patient. They made us feel at home, and like part of the family! We recently changed to MAVH from another, due primarily to proximity to our home AND the positive community feedback (informal, verbal). We have 3 dogs and a cat. We like that there is a boarding facility (which we would not use), grooming provider (service of which we are VERY PLEASED!!), pet supply store at the same location, and no-appointment vaccinations. Best of all, prices are very reasonable, as compared to the prior Vet facility from which we transferred. Our experience for all our pets is that everyone we have been in contact with has provided superlative, caring service for routine procedures - which is what we expect, right? Then the unthinkable happened: Our newly-rescued (owned less than a year) high-strung, skittish border collie got spooked as she was getting into the car in our open garage, and took off; a block away, she ran into (or was hit) by a car on a busy street. She was rushed to MAVH and was immediately taken in; fortunately, Dr. Richardson - he is THE BEST - was present. She was seen right away. Dog still in recovery - survival 1st 3 days was uncertain; after that, she had surgery to repair her broken jaw. It's been 2 weeks and she's still on the mend, but Dr. Richardson has taken the time to personally reach out to us, giving us details on the surgeries, reporting on updates and progress during unplanned / unscheduled follow-up visits. She still has a gimpy paw, and may lose it, but Dr Richardson has prepared us for that possibility. We appreciate his candor and direct communication. Best of all, our dog LOVES him, despite what she has undergone. I cannot recommend MAVH and Dr. Richardson - in fact the entire staff, including Dr Ninekirk, who carved out some same-day time, even though standard appointments are 3-4 weeks out, to see our other border collie's ear infection. read more
