The grooming is the very best. They pointed out a symptom that pointed to a life threatening infection for my dog. She (and her sister) both had surgery and are fine now. This place is amazing, and I wish we had one in our city! We visited Eureka on a summer vacation, and being able to drop our dog off for one day of daycare allowed us to tour the zoo and Redwood Sky Walk and hit the Old Town neighborhood for souvenir shopping -- none of which would have been possible with a dog. The staff was friendly and professional, and Mickey seemed happy and relaxed, which made us feel good about our choice to leave him there -- we all had a great day! We even bought him a few new toys and collars from their large retail selection, which was fun too. I highly recommend the center! Be aware that they have vaccination requirements for pet boarding -- I was lucky to fit in a Bortadella vaccination at my home vet in *just* enough time. read more

We took our very shy dog to stay for two overnights. She had such good care. I knew she was safe and had people around her who love dogs. They even were able to trim her nails! She seemed happy when we got her. She will be staying there next time we have to go out of town. read more

If I could give them no stars, I would. We left our fur babies in their care for 6 days. We picked them up and they have both lost a considerable amount of weight. My parents were both very concerned as well as the entirety of my Facebook friends as I posted before and after pictures sharing my experience. I called them this morning and spoke with Laura who was helpful and told me that the stress of boarding can cause them to lose weight and sometimes it's necessary to up their food intake while they're being boarded. That's all great, but if that was the case, why weren't we called to authorize them upping the food? I spoke with Alex who took care of them for part of their stay. She also told me she noticed they were losing weight and was surprised by it. She has only worked there a couple of weeks so I hold the establishment accountable as opposed to her because the poor training is really the problem. Once she told me she hasn't worked there long, I asked to speak with the owner who had just stepped out so Alex took my number and said the owner would call me back. That was at 11:30 this morning I just went in there after work (5:30pm) and was able to speak to the owner. She first told me that Laura's information was false and upping their food intake wasn't necessary. She then told me that the only explanation was a parasite. So her establishment must've given them the parasite because they were healthy and happy dogs when they went in, and now their ribs and hip bones are sticking out. Even if it was due to a parasite and wasn't their fault, I still don't understand why we weren't contacted. If your staff is telling me that they noticed the substantial weight loss and it was worrisome, why wasn't I or my emergency contact called so we could figure something else out. The way it appears is that the owner is just in it for the money. Boarding dogs is very pricey and I would hope that for the price we would at least get a phone call if something is wrong. But according to the owner, since they weren't vomiting or having diarrhea, they didn't call. I can understand the fact they were very busy as we boarded them over Thanksgiving. But if they can't handle a full kennel, they should figure out solutions such as less dogs or more staff. I am incredibly disappointed in how my dogs look and even more disappointed that the owner looked me in the eyes and told me she saw no difference from when they came in. I find it hard to believe that everyone else is concerned with their health and well-being while she makes excuses and tries to say there's been no difference. Next time I'll be spending the extra money for a room with a camera at a different kennel and I strongly suggest everyone else do the same. read more

Our dog loves this place! We've used both their boarding and grooming services frequently. They take good care of our pup every time. She just loves all the groomers and other employees and is always excited to see them. As for taking care of the human family members, all the employees are very friendly. We've never had trouble getting a booking, even on relatively short notice. I have had multiple interactions with the staff in-person and over the phone that have been truly exceptional. For example, I was reminded of some upcoming vaccinations needed for my dog on a recent call with Silas. This was just a friendly reminder that I had some coming up. It wasn't going to impact my upcoming stay. I also recently had two phone conversations with a young woman (I didn't get her name) to change my boarding, and she couldn't have been more pleasant. We have been boarding our dog Kenai here for years (several times a year) when we go out of town. We have never had anything negative happen during her stays. The staff are all super kind and handle my dog very well. He comes back home exhausted, which is as to be expected with so many dogs away from home barking. I've been meaning to write a review for a while, but let me just say we absolutely love this place! Not only are the extremely friendly and outgoing, they're also quite knowledgeable! We moved to Eureka in April and haven't even tried another pet store because this one is so great. Sylias helped us recently when we were trying to find the right dog food for our pup, and also told us he'd hold some of the products we picked out for the next day because they were having a huge sale. This review is for the boarding facilities, not the veterinary office. I have never boarded my pet here nor purchased anything, just want to say that first. I need to board my cat for a week so am shopping around the area for where to board, and I stopped here. I asked to see the boarding facilities and- after a very looong wait -which was very suspicious- I was taken to the cat facilities. TERRIFYING -- Tiny metal cages barely large enough for the cats to turn around in. Food and litter boxes crammed into these tiny metal boxes. Horrible stench -although they said they "just finished cleaning"! All the boxes were were crammed into a room similar to a walk-in closet-, there was no air flow, it was suffocatingly hot & smelly. This review is for the kennels, not the store. I live right next to this store and am constantly having to watch where I step because there is dog poop around this ENTIRE BUILDING. And today my husband and I watched as one of the dog walkers let the dog she was walking poop and then just left the poop in the middle of the sidewalk. My husband then went inside to complain and the person he talked to basically shrugged it off, said it was no big deal and they would clean it at night...Well like I said, I live right next to this place and no they do not pick it up! This is extremely unsanitary, spreads diseases and leaches into water systems. This place should be ashamed of itself. read more

Nail trimming day......we were in town and decided to give this place a try. They have a vet next door so if anything went wrong we had a close plan B. The wait wasn't too long and they were nice and sweet to both pups. The staff did cater to regulars first but that's to be expected since those people are returning customers. I moved to Eureka about a year ago from San Fran, and was very happy to find a full service pet center so close to my house. I don't drive regularly(I use a wheelchair and am underconfident on the road) so I was beyond thrilled when the woman running the pet center said she would deliver my dog's heavy bag of food. They've done so monthly for a year now, and I couldn't be happier. Thanks for making it possible for me to support a local business! We took our late Miss Kitty there to have her hair clipped off a few years ago. They told us to bring her in at 10am. I assumed that was literally an appointment and they'd do it fairly quickly- at least within the hour. Apparently it wasn't exactly an appointment. The wife had her there at 10am but was told that they'd call when they gave our cat a haircut. so she came home. After it got to around 1pm I got a bit upset thinking about Ms. Kitty being stuck in her kitty carrier all that time. I called to ask if she was ok and they said she was. It wasn't until around 4pm we were called and told to pick up Miss Kitty. Maybe I wouldn't have been as upset had we been told up front that it could be hours before they could get to the grooming job. Fair enough, but I still don't like the idea of Miss Kitty being stuck in a kitty carrier for 6 hours. Otherwise, they did a fine job on the haircut for a very reasonable price and Miss Kitty seemed none the worse for the wear. read more

I have boarded my dog here now three times. The last time I picked up my dog after a three day weekend. He was dirty, smelled of urine and most of all he had lost 6 pounds, I know this because he had a vet visit two days before, and took him to the vet next door to be weighed. The owner was unsympathetic and uncaring, she offered no appology and no moniitary refund of any kind. Needless to say my dog will NOT be going here again. I have only used their boarding services and self wash, but all of my experiences have been fantastic. I have used their boarding services for my own dogs and for foster dogs that had very specific instructions. Each time I was pleased that they followed my instructions and I could tell the staff genuinely enjoys animals. They were very honest with me regarding how each animal did during their stay. Dog abusers as far as I can see left my dog all day to be groomed dropped off at 7:30 am picked up at 5pm when I walked in o heard him barking which is rare I asked why is he barking ? I had boarded my dogs here 2-3 times and was pretty happy with the pricing, which was fairly consistent, and more importantly, with the customer service; the employees were pretty nice. Until today, when I returned from a trip and was charged a lot more, maybe 30% more, than I had been the previous 2 times and found out that my dogs had been boarded separately when I specifically asked for them to be boarded together, meaning that the whole time we were gone they were lonely, anxious, and miserable. While a cashier was trying to ring me up, she was told how to do it by an incredibly rude employee who could not stop bragging about how she had "worked there since 2006," implying that she was a GENIUS on their pricing structure and knew EVERYTHING. Molly had all sorts of crazy illogical theories about the pricing and told the clerk to do it in a way it had never been done the other times I boarded my dogs. For example, according to Molly, when dogs share a kennel the customer is charged A LOT MORE, which makes no sense and is not the way any other kennel has ever done it -- I've been a dog owner for about 30 years and used at least five other kennels all over the country. It's also ridiculous for a business in which space = money. If they charge more to board dogs together, that results in them LOSING MONEY, because customers are incentivized NOT to have their dogs share. This is also bad for the dogs who need each other! Terrible!. The rude and strange groomer's name was Molly, and if this business is to survive, she should never be allowed anywhere near a paying customer again. I believe she was the same person mentioned in CC t.'s review below from 2011, when she was already bragging about how long she had worked there. Of course, her response that she is the brilliantist/smartest/knows everything about the way customers are charged is NOT either good customer service or likely to calm a customer down who has just been JACKED on higher rates than they have ever been charged. By the SAME BUSINESS with the SAME OWNER. This place did NOT follow my directions about boarding my dogs together and then charged me a lot more than they ever had. And I never got anything near an apology from the dreadful Molly. Instead I felt that she was attacking me and talking down to me. Ok, dog groomer. While there is nothing wrong with being a dog groomer, maybe you should try to work things out with paying customers instead of insulting them and telling them ridiculous lies that make no sense. I also paid for one of my dogs to have her nails trimmed and they are all jacked up. Several nails look like they cut into the vein and had to use styptic powder and at least 4 or 5 more look like they were not cut at all. It's kind of how the Joker might cut a dogs nails, except he would probably also paint them purple and green. And the Joker would probably skip the styptic powder too. They were supposed to have bathed my dog, which I paid for, and it does not appear to have happened either. Very disappointed, don't recommend this place: there are good staff and terribly bad staff, and you never know when you might draw the hideously rude and bossy Molly the Smartest Dog Groomer in the Whole Wide World. Trust me, you never want to. The thing that makes me most upset is that my dogs were split up and when I picked them up they seemed very, very unhappy. read more

The prices for food are great, however, the grooming quality has declined. I have been taking my dog here for 2 years and these past few months when I pick up my pooch her grooming just looks rushed. Sometimes they don't even clean up around the face and her ears are choppy and different lengths. Also, their system to hold their records apparently doesn't work. I have to bring in my dogs vaccine records every time because they claim "they lost them, or didn't record them." When I explained to the lady on the phone that I shouldn't have to bring them in everytime she was rude to me. So now I take my dog elsewhere for her grooming and I'm glad I did. read more

I am rarely angered or pleased enough with a business to offer a review, as most experiences usually hit somewhere in the middle, or average. However, I am motivated by a notably negative experience I had with the Myrtle Ave Pet Center recently. My dogs spent ~48 hrs in the kennel, a Friday afternoon ~2:30 pm to Sunday ~ 3 pm, yet we were charged a full 3 day kennel rental charge. I called to get an explanation for what I considered significant overcharges, and I was given a lame excuse about how the owner had designated 3 pm as a cutoff time for the day charge. Essentially meaning that if you dropped off your animals anytime before 3 pm you will be charged a full days rate?!?! How does that seem fair? This would mean that a 12 noon to 12 noon rental (24 hours) would amount to a 2 day rental charge!!! That is how I ended up getting bilked out of an additional 2 days of kennel charges for my 2 dogs, who were extremely happy to leave their very cramped and stinky facilities, of which I have seen the inside of personally. I would not even have used their business except that it was close to our home, and we booked a larger kennel for both of our dogs for the second night, which they did not even use for them. They also did not disclose their scandalous billing policy in advance, and, after a rude and defensive phone call with one of their employees, the owner never contacted me as I firmly requested for her to do to explain their egregiously unfair policies. That was nearly 2 weeks ago, still waiting for the call, MAPC!! Here's the bottom line; I will never, ever spend another dime at your business, and I'll make sure that everyone I know hears about my negative experiences as well. Very disappointed in the customer care and service. I am new to the area, had my dogs papers sent over and had him groomed, I bought all of my pet supplies at this establishment and referred friends. When I called to make a second appointment the girl at the counter was rude, defensive and told me his papers were not on file and he had never been there. "I've worked here for five years" she quipped. Hmmm, well you haven't learned anything about how businesses stay alive these days. Good luck, I will never return to THE PET CENTER. My daughter and I called and made appointment to board my dogs one week in advance. When we arrived the girl at counter was very confused about the check in process. She looked at our dogs papers and we filled out the appropriate paperwork and left. Approx 24 hours later while we were away on our trip the manager called to inform us that we didn't have the correct shots for one of the dogs to be boarded. She said she had to isolate one of the dogs from the entire group of dogs being boarded and that I would have to pay an extra $35 per day (4 day min charge). She said the girl at the counter was new and didn't check us in correctly. After a long discussion she did agree to waive the $35 daily fee.....but stated "if your dog gets sick it's not my fault." She also informed me that because of my dog..she would not be able to take any other dogs and would be losing money. I won't ever take my dogs back again. We'd been using Myrtle Ave Pet Center grooming for about 10 years whenever we came up here on holiday, or when my husband would work for the summer. I'm an older woman with epilepsy and one arm, leaving my service dog for long periods at groomers isn't an option. They were always pretty fast and right down the street from where we'd stay, convenient. Until last Friday (7/3/15) anyway. I dropped my little guy off at 7:30 (they have a 1st come 1st served policy, we were first to check in). I was called @9:15 and was already in the parking lot expecting the call for pick-up (we'd been doing this a long time, even though time out SAYS 10AM she has always called before that), girl says woman doing his hair 1st wasn't there, then she said she was doing a cat! They'd need to keep my service dog until after 11am. I said that couldn't happen because we had 1 car and husband had to work. They said "we can keep him all day" at that point I went into FULL PANIC MODE. Thinking to myself, what if I had a seizure on the street or somewhere else without my dog? Oh no, that wasn't happening. Then one of the many large dogs they let run free behind the half door jumped up and stuck it's face in mine and startled me, instinctively I put my hand on it's chest and said "down". (They do nothing when these dogs routinely jump up here) One of the girls said "don't hit our dog"! WTF??? In no way could defending myself be construed as hitting that dog. How do I know it wasn't going to bite me? I collected my pooch, he was partially shaved down his back and looked terrible. At no time did I swear, cuss, yell or call anyone a name. I did say I was disappointed, that we'd been going there for 10 years & never had this problem. I was almost in tears, I think I kept repeating this. I was called the following day and told (before the call failed) that we were no longer welcome in their shop (due to my panicked behavior?) AND another "line" that it would have only been another 10 minutes for his haircut to be finished... 1) That 10 minute story was not told to me when I walked up, nor to me on the phone, if it was I wouldn't have panicked. 2) If the correct person doing the grooming wasn't there in the first place, I would have elected to reschedule. 3) I find it inappropriate to stop grooming an animal to start grooming a different one, that's violating the 1st come, 1st serve policy. read more

Took my dog here just before Christmas with very specific instructions of how I wanted my dog groomed, including how short. I even agreeded to pay extra for the works so he would look well groomed. I brushed him out before taking him in because I know he can get tangles. When I picked him up I was shocked to see him completely shaved to the skin. When I complained the groomer would not even look at me she just stated he had mats and she didn't have time to brush him out. That was a total lie! I had brushed him out plus he is a very well cared for little guy that gets brushed and groomed often. They should have called me. Plus I paid extra for him to be well groomed not shaved. I could shaved him in 10 minutes or less at home. They would not talk to me or return my phone calls. I would never go back. If I could give them no stars or minus stars that's what I would do but I can't review without a star. read more

I come here very often due to me aging and the store being close to my home. The employees that work there are kind of a hit and miss. Sometimes you get the girl who talks all to fast and never lets you finish a sentace, sometimes you get absolutely no help at all, depends on the mood of the girl working the front but when i went in there last week i had the most plesent experience. The little blond working that day was amazing, she was assertive, sweet, and went above to make sure my needs were met. Mind you she had 5 people in the store and she was able to assist us all. The groomers were very busy so she trimmed my Calis toenails and was so wonderful with my baby. I was very pleased with the experience my dog and I had there. read more

Took my dog to bathe her in the self bath, which is $15. First of all it was so filthy in there. Dog hair from other dogs everywhere. When I was drying her, the dog hair that was there from so many other dogs ( all colors, many textures) was flying everywhere on my dog and myself... so disgusting. Secondly, they do not provide towels, dog brushes, nor cotton balls and ear cleaning alcohol. If you use the towel you have to pay $1.00 per towel. I told them that the area was dirty and full of hair and they said they bathe (in the same area of the self bath) about 12 dogs per day, in addition to the people who self bathe, so they don't clean the area until the last bath for the day. You can imagine how how much hair is in there. I will stick with The farm store who provides towels, ear cleaners, brushes at no additional price. They have their own separate area where they bathe the dogs. They also clean up the after every bath in the self bathe area. read more

Shopped there many times for food and other supplies and it has been just fine. (which is why this isn't a straight up 1 star deal) However, we just scheduled a grooming and was told to drop our dog off between 7 am and 10:30. This gave us the impression that they would keep her all day. With this being our dog's first grooming we wanted to stick around during the appointment. So we called the store and let them know that. The woman talked to the groomer and told us that it would be fine if we stayed and that we should bring our dog in around 3 pm. When we arrived at 3, we were told the groomer was on lunch and the woman behind the counter told us we should have brought our dog in between 7 and 10:30, there were a couple dogs still left to be groomed and the process takes 4 to 5 hours. We explained to her that we spoke to another employee AND the groomer who instructed us to come in at 3. She then told us that they usually charge a cancellation fee if less than 24 hours notice is given but she would let us slide this time....... Needless to say there won't be a next time. If these employees can't even communicate with each other to stay on the same page, we can shop elsewhere. We wanted to give a local business our money but it looks like Petco's grooming service is where we will be taking our pup. read more

I have been using Myrtle Ave Pet Center as my go to for pet supplies and self serve great grooming for years. I have watched a complete transformation of the boarding facility and the grooming area. The grooming area has a spacious raised tile tub with secure steps for your pooch to climb with confidence, I love using this tub and the self serve service! The boarding kennels look bright and cheerful after a remodel and the new cat boarding enclosure is a large room with perches, cat trees and a sunny window seat. The staff work hard to maintain a sanitary environment, you can see how much they love caring for the pets! The owner is a generous contributor to our local community, including the hospital, our no-kill pet shelter and so many other local charities! I love coming to their customer appreciation days where they have free baths and huge sales. I buy at least a few bags of my favorite dog food since it's always at least $10 off during the sale!
