Nor Cal pets used to be our local go-to pet store but we'll be taking our service elsewhere from now on. Bought a bag of raw dog food and realized the bag had a rip when we got home. Tried to exchange it two weeks later (delayed bc our dog happened to get super sick around that time) with a receipt, and both the clerk and manager basically said they wouldn't do an exchange bc they couldn't guarantee we weren't the ones that ripped the bag. We literally had no reason to do such a thing and do a direct exchange. We've also spent hundreds of dollars at Nor Cal, if not over a thousand, and it is a huge slap in the face and terrible customer to not work with us on this. Will not be wasting our time or money in the future on a store that won't exchange defective products, or make decisions based on logic. read more

We were sold 2 Finnish Spitz dogs 5 years ago, and were told the spay fee would be free. After calculating our 2 disability checks we get per month, we found out we did not qualify! Not only that, but one of the dogs had obviously been abused by its previous owner-- she will bite you, sometimes without provocation. We have certainly come to love both dogs, after much hard work training them. We took one of them to NorCal several days ago, to buy a muzzle, and the only muzzle they had they had to use for their grooming clients! The manager was supposed to call us back, but never did! NOT a good way to run a business. We will never use them again, ever. read more

Terrible customer service. Bought an inflatable collar for my dog that just had surgery. I was told I could bring it back if it didn't fit. When I came back 10 minutes later the lady asked me if I had blown up the device, which I said yes to see if it would fit. She then told me they couldn't take it back. Did not disclose this to me when I purchased the item when I was saying I was unsure of the size. Didn't apologize or offer a discount or anything for not disclosing this to me 10 minutes prior that I could not actually blow the item up. They had an opportunity to make a customer but instead I will not be shopping here and will be telling my local family to do the same. read more

We've been taking our rough collies (Lassie Dogs) to Nor Cal for some years now and it's always been a pleasant, positive experience. Something seems to have changed, and not for the better, since the owner sold the business. My last experience was one of misunderstandings, confusion and being charged $80 for a service I was not told about or even knew they offered...a "deshedding" instead of the "bath and grooming" I specifically set up with the person at the counter a couple of weeks earlier after I went in at the wrong time. She was totally cool about it. However, when I did bring one of the collies in, the confusion, for me at least began. I had signed him up for a bath and hair and nail trim on the website. I was told that the groomer hadn't arrived yet. Fair enough. Left him and went home. I always leave a set of small drawings indicating what I want. I get a call from the groomer. What she says doesn't make sense. Then she says it will be three hours?! Now I'm really confused, but whatever. Then she calls me again and again it doesn't make sense since she's talking about golden retrievers. So I go in at the three hour point, go back to the bathing/grooming room and there's the groomer repetitively brushing him when I can see that he's dry. Finally go in, get him leashed up and head up to the counter to find out what's going on. Staffer not helpful. Groomer comes up and starts talking while I'm trying to finish the transaction and go home. By now it's getting dark. I just need to get me and my dog out of there, pay and leave. I will admit to being irritated and exasperated by that point and I'm sure it showed. I realized after we got home that none of what I'd drawn and labeled for her, and then explained to her over the phone, had been done. Routine things like paw and nail trimming, soft stuff behind the ears, sanitary trim under the tail, etc. She did do a belly trim and it was fine. She clearly knows how to do grooming but never seemed to understand what I was asking for, which had never been an issue with the previous groomers. Got home and wrote a calm, polite, fact-based email to them (which I let sit overnight) about what my experience had been, giving them space to respond and also assuring them that we would continue to patronize them (and I meant it). Never got a response. I was left with the feeling that the new owners need some training or professional help on running a business and, well, customer relations. This morning I went on the site thinking I'd make a bath app't for our other collie. And I find that next to my name in capital letters is "DO NOT TAKE CUSTOMER AGAIN". Needless to say, unless I have an indication that things have changed for the better, sorry to say that they won't have to worry about that. I greatly respect the rescue and adoption work that NorCal does and applaud them for it. I wish them all the best and would like to be able to patronize them again in the future. They get three stars for how good they've been in the past and because I'm sure none of what happened was intentional. read more

Nor Cal Pet - What I found when I tried to make an appointment this morning. - Pet Stores Near Me - McKinleyville, California

This local Pet store is more than just a pet supply place. Just off the main drag in McKinleyville if you look you will find a great organization with a very committed staff of people, helping place families together with little fur friends. These fine folks make the trek down to So-Cal regularly to rescue the abandoned and often discarded from "kill" shelters - Nor-Cal Pet is a true No Kill facility and they will keep the animal(s) forever if necessary - but usually fur friends find a home. Nor Cal Pet offers the standard of most pet stores; various types of pet feed, supplies and equipment, wash stations, advice, etc. but what really makes them a stand out is their commitment to their rescue service. They save and have lots of dogs, pups, adolescents, pit bulls, little dogs and even a few seniors - all looking for forever final homes. We recently adopted an old man (over 10) who just needed a place to lay down his old gray head, he had been hanging around a couple months there at the store, just a sweet old dog and we had seen him a few times - laying there quietly kinda sad, anyway we brought him home for a weekend to see if he would mesh into our family. After that time we wanted to give him a couple more days to make sure he would fit in with our other old dog and the owners completely understood and wanted exactly the same thing. They will work with you and give you as much time (weeks if need be) to make sure that everybody and everything is happy. I wanted to love this place for dog grooming, but after several truly weird and horrible interactions with Dawn (who claims to be the only actual groomer there), I have to warn others away. It started with several mix-ups between the front desk staff who schedule the dogs over the phone for grooming and the groomer herself. It seems that the front desk will schedule dogs whenever, but when I showed up I was turned away multiple times (first appointment because the person my dog was scheduled with was not comfortable grooming a dog post-surgery even though I was told over the phone it would be fine and the next time because the dog was scheduled too late in the day for what breed he was in terms of hair). So I get over these internal mix ups and finally get an appointment. My dog comes out looking great for not too much money with some other girls there who do grooming (not Dawn). So I schedule the other dog. This is where the real trouble begins. Dawn is the groomer this time; she talks in circles and bulldozes people with her lecturing. She also insists that she's the only person there authorized to groom long-haired dogs even though my other dog was long-haired and was done by someone else at the shop. After a suffocating conversation that seems to go nowhere, I leave my dog with her to be groomed. 4 hours and $185 later he is done and looks like a freak and she tells me he still has mats. She also tells me that she's not accepting his breed anymore for grooming but that she will work with him again (?). None of the services are itemized out, she just says it's $185 because it took a long time and that she's being generous about it. The next time I scheduled my dog, I found out it was with Dawn and I rescheduled to a day I knew she wasn't working so I could get someone else, someone easier to work with. Dawn found out and cancelled the appointment without calling me, and when I called she said that I "seem confused a lot" and that she's not going to take either of my dogs anymore. She's making that decision for everyone in the shop as well and I can find another groomer. The front desk had also input my email address wrong and had been emailing some woman in another state about my grooming appointments, and that woman had apparently called to straighten it out earlier that morning. I had been told about it by Dawn's manager and we solved it, but then Dawn accused me of calling from another state and being confused about my appointments! Lol. I had to explain to her that that wasn't me, but she stuck to her guns and said I was confused all the time and she wasn't going to groom my dogs anymore. Dawn seems to live in a quagmire of misunderstandings and generates them for customers constantly, not to mention the inappropriate lectures and blaming. I really tried to be nice, but now I'm blacklisted apparently and 100% cannot recommend this place. read more

I really like the people here. But I will say my cats lion cut was a bit odd. She is Himalayan and gets cut once a year for summer. She's been groomed ooddles of times. This is the first and last time she will have her paws and HER WHISKERS trimmed. WTH? Everyone knows you do not touch these areas. Whiskers are her little curb feelers. Plus they were so curly and cute. Additionally, you never trim below a cats glans on her legs. Bad bad bad. I believe just a tad of education may be required. But that's okay. She was treated well and came home feeling wonderful. So I know they treated her as I would have. Overall I'm Very pleased. Anyway, the groomer was delightful and I will be back and I look forward to giving them 5 stars. I recommend that you use their services and humor them with details! read more

The staff here is so amazing. Knowledgeable about animals and have such big hearts. They rescue dogs and cats and care for them so well until they can be placed in their forever homes. This pet store is GREAT. The reviews here are just out of date. This store is staffed by the nicest people. They have good supplies, great treats, and best of all, the pet wash station. You can bring your dog here and wash them for free. Just bring soap and towels. We bring our dogs here several times a month for a bath and pick up treats on the way. They have a whole CBD line if you need special things for your pet. They have great toys. THANK YOU NOR CAL PET. YOU RULE. read more

Love this store they always have my bull mastiffs food! And all the good flea collar is sold here as well as healthy organic raw hides! Some what expensive but ....they have a very wide variety of toys and chews and I believe you can kennel them during the day and they groom too! Two full thumbs up! Nor Cal is amazing!! I am so glad they opened up. I first went there when they were having a "pitty party". I love pit bulls and I dragged my boyfriend a long with me. It was an adoption event so there a TON of beautiful dogs there. Someone brought out the cutest 3 month old puppy and I fell in love. My boyfriend and I ended up taking her home that day with the intention to foster her for the weekend and see how it worked out. On Sunday we called Leah and asked if we could take the rest of the week. The next weekend we asked for another week, then the rest of the month, then another month, then we were taking to in to get fixed so we could adopt her. We've had her 8 months now and she is such a sweet girl. She's a border collie mix so she is absolutely crazy with energy but it just gives us a reason to go to the beach all the time. I am so glad nor cal pet is here and helped us find such an amazing companion. I have recommended them to multiple people looking for dogs and they have adopted from them too and are incredibly happy as well read more

What a disappointment! I have special ordered the same pet food from NorCal Pet three times. In the past they were fast, courteous and very helpful, placing my order on the spot and letting me know when to expect it to arrive. This time though, I ordered the same food, left my phone number and waited three weeks for them to get it in. I finally called them and was told they have my order request but don't know where to get the food from. The least they could have done is call me to let me know they were not going to place my order. My pet has only a couple of days of food left. Before you take a dog home be aware it might have giardia, kennel cough, et. It's not their fault but it is something to know. They need clearer policies on pet adoption. Also, the older intense guy is not the best to customers but clearly loves dogs. read more

Love the awesome service here! They answered all of my questions very clean place gave me samples of everything they recommend. They also have a self service dog washing station just bring your own shampoo and a towel and there is no charge. The hours on here are incorrect however. This place sucks since the ownership changed. They can't keep their shelves stocked with product and did not have my product for over a month. When I requested my loyalty card from the store so that I could continue buying NutriSource from a different area vendor, the owner, Jennifer Wrask, refused to provide the card. Unfortunately, so many people have already taken their cards to A&L that she refused to surrender my card and then verbally attacked me for wanting to take my business elsewhere. She almost assaulted my family and I, all over a loyalty card provided by the NutriSource company for their customers. Thankfully A&L understood the whole mess and replaced the stolen card upon my next purchase. In addition, I reported the business to the NutriSource vendor and they assured me that this business owner's conduct is not representative of their product. Unfortunately the behavior of Jen Wrask IS representative of this business, so do yourself a favor and keep on driving down to A&L Feed for your animal needs. read more

Nor Cal Pet is getting by with the bare minimum as far as customer service and grooming goes. It's been a revolving door for unskilled groomers, but if you're lucky you'll get Lynn filling in between idiots. My dog always looked weird and wrong after a groom, except for with Lynn filling in, who has decades of experience. It took 6 hours one time to do my little dog once, so next time I wanted to bring my dog in early so he'll get out early, and made an appointment for 9:30am. I stood around for 15 minutes then asked where the groomer is, and a terse lady says, "Oh I don't know when she'll get in, maybe 10:30". I mentioned that I made a 9:30 apt, and she shrugged her shoulders. Then I mentioned I wanted the dog cut a certain way, and could she give some info to the groomer. I said "You know how these dogs have 2 kinds of hair, some soft and some coarse?" She replied, "I'm not stupid." Yes ma'am, you are stupid. You are very stupid. Have since taken my dog to Pampered Pooches, and have been happy. I think with this place we're dealing with some WT owners who will take a couple more years to run the place into the ground. Until that happens and someone better comes along, I won't be patronizing that store any more. Rude, dumb, & lame. read more
