I was super excited to make an appointment with Dr. Stigen after hearing so many great things. As a practicing Catholic, who recently had a miscarriage, I really wanted to see her. I called and Karen at the front desk said she could help me. When I told her my situation, Karen said "we can't see you until January" which is fine, totally understandable. My aunt referred me and she was also a new patient a couple of weeks ago and they got her in quickly. Not only that, but Karen proceeded to say, "you can call your primary doctor. They can help you". It all just felt like a huge slap to the face. I opened up about my miscarriage and they showed no compassion. Definitely not a pro-life interaction. read more

My wife and I had previously experienced a miscarriage, and when we finally got the will to start trying again, we were not having any results. (My wife is 37 and I am 35.) We came to Dr. Stigen and Mystical Rose in September of 2019. We signed up for her six month NaPro fertility program. It has been nothing short of life-changing. I was a patient since December 2017 until recently. When I began my search for a natural fertility doctor, I knew that I wanted to work with Dr. Stigen based on her yelp reviews and because she's also Catholic. Although we live over an hour away from her office, that didn't stop me. I was impressed by Dr. Stigen's expertise in infertility. She really knows her stuff. I like working with her because she is thorough, detail oriented, and patiently answers all my questions. She is very competent in her field. My office visits were on time and never rushed. Her office staff - Amanda and Karen were pleasant and always had a warm smile. Dr. Stigen was the surgeon who removed endometriosis from my uterus. A condition that I didn't know I had until I began working with her. She taught my husband and I how to be healthier through diet, exercise, and living a more natural lifestyle with less toxins. She provided us with so many helpful videos and shared her knowledge of a better, natural way of living to promote our chances of successfully conceiving our first child. Dr. Stigen recommended I change my diet to anti-inflammatory and when I did, there was a dramatic improvement in my cholesterol and overall results. I did not achieve natural pregnancy under Dr. Stigen's care, but I will carry the lessons I learned throughout my life. We thought we had one positive pregnancy, but it turned out to be a false positive from the medication and we were not told that could be possibility. Heartbreaking! If there is something to improve on, I would say better communication and more support to couples going through the program. There were 5 months in the beginning while we were detoxing and making lifestyle changes that we did not hear from the office at all and there were no check-ins. I have a few friends who highly recommend Dr. Stigen, but unfortunately I cannot. As a devout, practicing Catholic, I wanted to practice natural family planning in the most natural approach possible tailored to my body--with no hormone supplements if my hormone levels were appropriate. With this is mind, I visited Dr. Stigen, who ordered blood tests to check my hormone levels. When my results came back that my progesterone levels were fine, Dr. Stigen still recommended I take progesterone. Every woman I know who has seen Dr. Stigen has been proscribed progesterone. Her staff also told me she prescribes progesterone to every patient, to confirm my suspicions. This is not the sort of treatment I wanted--a one size fits all. The whole point of me visiting Dr. Stigen is that I wanted treatment that was in tune to MY body and what my body needed, and not just given a blank prescription of progesterone. I became pregnant a month after I completed my blood work testing through Dr. Stigen, and already had a phone consultation follow-up appointment scheduled to go over my results. When I declined the $300 progesterone monitoring during my pregnancy, the staff told me they going to cancel my phone appointment to go over my blood work I had done before I was pregnant. I had to convince them to let me keep my appointment since I already paid over $200 for the blood work and wanted my results so I know what my hormone levels are after I'm pregnant (it's not like I'm staying pregnant forever. It's only 9 months, folks.) Also, Dr. Stigen raised her progesterone pregnancy monitoring price for $200 to $300 literally the day of my phone appointment. When I asked if they would honor my signed contract, which I signed on my first visit and said I only had to pay $200, both the staff and Dr. Stigen refused to honor that rate and said the rate was now $300. This was a turn-off because it then seemed like she was more interested in the money than her patients. Finally, I had a terrible experience with Dr. Stigen telling me I had an "emergency" during early pregnancy and had to rush to the ER. I called her office and I told her I was spotting during early pregnancy (which I later found out that spotting during early pregnancy is extremely COMMON and NORMAL.) Telling a pregnant women she has an "emergency" and to rush to the ER is very unprofessional and very traumatizing. After I told Dr. Stigen that I was experiencing a small amount of spotting during my pregnancy, she immediately told me to go to urgent care for an ultrasound because the pregnancy may be ectopic. After going to urgent care and calling many others, I discovered urgent cares do not even offer ultrasounds. I then went to an imaging center to get an ultrasound, but they needed a prescription. When I texted Dr. Stigen for a prescription since I could not reach her after hours through her office, she told me to go to the ER and to not text her anymore. (I had literally no other way of contacting her, and I was a panicked pregnant woman she told to go to the ER. Not really the understanding response I was looking for.) I decided to call a local OBGYN group that specializes in high-risk pregnancies instead. They calmly told me to relax, come in the next day for blood work and an ultrasound, and reassured me that spotting during pregnancy is usually ok and is NORMAL. I was able to get blood work (they monitor progesterone during pregnancy FOR FREE, by the way), and an ultrasound the very next day. They confirmed the baby had a heartbeat, the pregnancy was ok, and that the bleeding was either from an irritated cervix or from implantation bleeding, which is very COMMON in pregnancies. (You would think Dr. Stigen would know implantation bleeding and cervix irritation are normal during pregnancy, and that ectopic pregnancies are rare.) Also, the staff are very unprofessional--they would call me at least 5 times a day leading up to my appointment. I work full-time at a very demanding job, and do not have time to answer multiple phone calls during working hours. The staff even told me on one phone call they would cancel my appointment if I did not fax my fertility charts within the next couple hours. To me it seems like Dr. Stigen has ZERO regard for costs of medical care and does nothing to be considerate about how expensive everything is and that some patients may not be able to afford such expensive treatment. I don't have $1,000 laying around to pop into the ER any time someone "thinks" there may be an emergency with my pregnancy. Her refusal to honor the $200 price of progesterone monitoring during pregnancy was a huge turn off, specifically when I had signed a contract with her stating my costs would be $200. Finally, regular OB offices provide progesterone monitoring during pregnancy for free. I honestly feel like Dr. Stigen just scammed me out of money all in the name of Catholicism and NFP. Then when results came in, she ignored them and told me I must just be depressed and tried to manipulate me into taking an anti-depressant, even though I wasn't depressed. For me, she was able to diagnose a small tumor on my pituitary gland - which had caused me to have OB/GYN related symptoms. She ordered all the right tests, which led to her ordering an MRI of my head (which her office cleared with my insurance as "medically necessary" beforehand) and then put me on the best medication and dosage for my tumor and then referred me to an endocrinologist (who was also very impressed)to follow up! After one short visit I decided not to be a patient anymore. I was referred to Dr. Stigen by my primary care physician for possible infertility issues. I had to wait over four months to be seen since she was about to go on maternity leave when I made the appointment. My issue wasn't urgent so I did not mind waiting. However, when I arrived, she had clearly not even glanced at my file before walking in the room as she had no idea why I was there. It is unprofessional and, frankly just rude, to be so unprepared. I had to take time off work for this appointment and felt like my time was wasted. After the 10 minute fruitless visit, the daily phone calls and emails telling me I had labs ready started. I knew I had no labs. After I informed them I no longer wished to be a patient, I received a bill in the mail for a copay. When I left the office I asked if there was a copay and they said no. If I had been told at the time there was, I would have paid it. So now it has been nine months since I was referred, four months since my appointment where no useful services were rendered, and they are still harassing me for a phantom copay. read more

I have spent a few years in the medical profession and I can say that Dr. Stigen and her entire staff are as compassionate, holistic and professional as they come. She doesn't rush through the process of taking a detailed history, performing a physical assessment or discussing and prescribing diagnostics while treating her patients. If you have an appointment with her to go over labs or need to discuss a potential surgery or medical procedure her office is going to schedule a respectable block of time to go over important topics of discussion and to make sure that your questions and concerns are addressed. I never once felt looked over or rushed out the door! She sits down with you and is conscious and present while she is with you. Her office is located in Fallbrook, in a peaceful, easy to find location. The environment she and her associates work in is welcoming and clean. Her nurse, Amanda, is very pleasant and efficient and her receptionist has always welcomed me with courtesy and a smile. I love their patient portal because it updates you on lab values and appointment reminders. It is easy to access and navigate and you can use it communicate directly with Dr. Stigen and to make payments online. Their response times by phone or email are prompt and always executed with courtesy. It's because I've spent time working in healthcare that I know how jaded, cynical and unprofessional the medical field can sometimes be and I believe that this is just one of the reasons people who work in medicine are sometimes reluctant when they encounter people who they need to trust with their dignity and medical care. "Physician Suicide Letters Answered" by Pamela Wible, Md. is a real book. Read it if you ever need examples of what I'm talking about. That being said, I felt completely at ease and confident in Theresa Stigen's care and I pray to whatever Gods or powers may be that this woman continues to spread the culture of empathy, compassion, professionalism and competence in this sometimes bankrupt profession. read more

I am currently on pregnancy #3 I am not a regular patient of Dr. Stigen's but I have ended up in L&D twice this pregnancy. Both times she was very short and lacked compassion. Pregnancy, hormones, and different complications are already difficult plus being sent to the ER and not even having the comfort of your own OB is scary. I have worked in a few medical offices over the years and try to act as an easy honest patient yet I've never been treated so poorly. She was rude and acted like I wasted her time. If i come across her again I will refuse care because I do not deserve to be lectured, accused, and talked down to from someone who has known me for 5 minutes and only knows the little information she would let me tell her. read more

I drive about an hour and a half to see her and it is worth the time! She even had me come in on a Saturday and Sunday to run some tests! I saw Dr Stigen back in 2017 after many failed attempts to conceive. My primary Dr referred me to Dr. Stigen for infertility issues. The best decision was to make the appointment to see Dr. Stigen. She is caring and very informative, she explains in detail what she needs from you and reasons why she does what she does. After only 7 months of being in treatment with Dr. Stigen I became pregnant with my first son "our miracle baby". Thanks to the guidance and compassion of Dr Stigen and her staff. I have been a patient of Dr. Stigen's for four months now. I have been so impressed with doctor Stigen and her staff! They have answered all my questions and lead me in the right direction with my paperwork and insurance questions. I am currently moving forward with supplements to lower my high estrogen levels, a diagnosis that came through in my DUTCH urine test. All this was because Dr. Stigen is so thorough and educated. Dr Stigen was helpful in all of her detailed tests and i found out why i was having infertility for the last 3 years(low progesterone), and ended up getting pregnant and having a healthy child praise God 1 year after her testing and surgery. Dr Stigen is infact very compassionate and detailed which we highly appreciated! However, she advised me to not use you the natural progesterone cream because she couldnt monitor the levels correctly but i got some on my own instincts after and got pregnant 5 days later. The progesterone pills she gave me did not work and caused me to have an ectopic pregnancy for some reason when i had no tube issues. She then told us via portal that i was having ectopic pregnancy and my husband had no idea i was pregnant so i started crying in his arms and he was upset this important information was not given through a porfessional phone call. Her very rude receptionist who made me feel so uncomfortable every time i called for a question or had an appt, then proceeded to ask me if my husband abused me. This devastating news of ectopic pregnancy and that we should go to the ER over email was very hurtful to us after a year of quality care with the doctor. Then for my husband to be accused as he did, we decided to go with another doctor for future testing. Dr stigen had great care and compassion but she made some mistakes reporting a possible ectopic via computer and hiring an absolutely terrrible office Manager Receptionist that lured me in and was friendly in the beginning and then humiliated me for asking questions during an already difficult time of infertility during every phone call and appt. Her terrible receptionist was the reason I chose another doctor. Infertility can already be a shameful embaressment and to have a cruel receptionist with no care or compassion made the entire experience 10 times more depressing and worse for us. This review is long but I want to be thorough. I visited Dr. Stigen after being referred to her for a (in)fertility workup/consult. I knew going in that she did not perform or recommend any sort of Assisted Reproductive treatments (ART), and that was fine by me, as if I could find my issue without resorting to ART, all the better. The positive - she was very nice and attentive. And now my experience - She ordered about 7+ days of hormone profile blood work, which I did. All that came back fine, with just one issue relating to MTHFR (I'll get to that later), so she suggested I do a full surgery (Napro Robotic Surgery) with would include an hsg, hysteroscopy, and robotic laparoscopy as well as a series of ultrasounds. When I got 2 second opinions from fertility specialists, they were shocked at all the blood work I had done. When I saw my regular OBGYN, she had to order ANOTHER test which I learned is very standard (the cycle day 3 blood work) - so I have no idea why it wasn't ordered by Stigen. Basically I was told that the blood work Dr. Stigen did was sort of a waste, which is so unfortunate as I ended up spending about $1500 on this blood work. The one thing I did discover from one of my blood tests was that I have MTHFR - I was told this via the patient portal. I would think that for a result like this that needs explanation, they would at least try and call me. I was definitely put off by that. Again, after seeing my OBGYN, she referred me to a hematologist, and based on my MTHFR results, they are suggesting several more blood tests for me to take as I may be prone to clotting during pregnancy, which Dr. Stigen's office never even mentioned I might need. I ended up getting an HSG (which was going to be done in the Napro Surgery), and it came back completely clear. Based on those results, 2 other doctors told me it would be ridiculous and unnecessary to get the hysteroscopy and laparoscopy. I am sure glad I didn't go through with the surgery. Lastly, my husband had to get tested. I received through the patient portal a message that my husband looks fine on all levels. Because I was getting second opinions, I got a hold of all lab reports myself and saw that he was on the lower end of the scale in a couple categories. 2 other doctors said it could be a factor and suggested some simple supplements for him to take. I have NO idea why Dr. Stigens office would tell me he was fine - other than the fact that if it was him that was the issue with our infertility, they wouldn't be able to help us since they do not perform any ART. But why not at least inform us and let us know of supplements he could take to at least boost our chances? That was sort of the final straw and I have since been seeking help elsewhere. One last side note - in an effort to do complete research on this whole Napro Technology, I took to the web, and was very surprised to find little to no unfiltered/uncurated information on it. The only information out there is on the official websites. If it is so great and works so well (which it might), why aren't there more people talking about it freely and posting their experiences to forums? It was just unsettling not being able to find a lot of information about it. read more

I have suffered with her almost one year going in her facility and I could not deal with her negligence of not having the right instrument for surgery. You will feel horrible like I did after going through anesthesia and surgery she didn't have the tool and wants you to repeat surgery so she can bill your insurance again. How does a patient know of bedside manner of a doctor during surgery when the patient has had anesthesia. That's something that make me wonder looking at one of the reviewers reviewer. Please make wise decisions and give true feedback to discourage the medical professionals become commercial than in actuality are supposed to care for you. Dr. Stigen was referred to me by a friend. I was quite desperate to see an GYN because of an infection I had and knew had to be taken care of. So I made an appointment. I answered questions over the phone--age, insurance info etc., gave all my information and then was emailed forms to fill out and was told to bring the forms with me the next day. I filled out all the forms and went to the appointment. Turned the forms in and sat and waited to see the doctor. Then the receptionist said, "Oh so sorry, we no longer take Medicare patients. The doctor stuck her head out and also said - no medicare patients. They knew my age and that I was on Medicare. Why didn't they tell me this over the phone initially? I have an excellent supplemental insurance plan and thought I was able to go to any doctor. I've never heard of being turned down because you're on Medicare. So, sorry ladies, if you're a senior citizen on Medicare you won't be able to see this doctor. Don't waste your time as I did only to be turned away. It was humiliating and frustrating. read more

I was referred to this office by a good family friend, I waited a couple months for the appt and was eager to meet a good physician since I just moved to the area. Initially when I came to the office I was greeted by super friendly people at the front which was comforting cause you know no one ever wants to come to these appts so it's better when you have a warm welcome. I was taken into the room and was surprised I didn't have to get in a gown or anything. Shortly after, the dr came in, she asked me some general questions and asked if I had any questions to which I asked a couple questions, nothing real complicated or anything but general things I've asked at previous ob appts if I have any concerns etc. the conversation was super brief. The dr then left the room and told me to get in the gown to prepare for the exam and she came in and did the exam which was the quickest yet most painful exam I ever had. I didn't feel like I had time to get relaxed like I have at my previous dr offices as I felt like she was in a rush. I've had three kids so I have had my share of Exams in the past and can say this wasn't pleasant but I figured it was just from me being tense. Needless to say I bled heavily for 8 days after the exam. Shortly after the visit I received a bill for a copay, which I thought I didn't have since it's a yearly exam which is fully covered by my insurance. I called the office and they said that since I asked questions about pain I had (which didn't require any additional testing or evaluations that day or ever) that it's now no longer considered a "well woman exam" and there's a whole extra visit charge. Mind you I didn't get any extra length of an appt yet now my insurance and I are expected to pay an extra visit charge. I was shocked because if I had an extra long visit or required additional testing it would seem understandable but that's not the case here. I've never had a dr visit charge extra just for asking questions during the exam that I'm there having anyways, it's not like I left and came back or sat there asking many questions it was rather casual convo throughout the already scheduled visit . Had I known I would be paying for an extra visit I would have asked many questions since I would be paying for it. If you give your email and phone number to their office you will be bombarded by their system calling you every other day with messages and emailing you after your appt. I can't believe how often it calls or emails me. I really wish I could have felt positive about this experience as I don't like leaving less than a 5 star review but i feel others should be aware that if you go outside of just straight out having the exam done by asking a question or two about your women's health you will be double charged. I had to move cross country last year, and I have since seen two more OBs, an RE, and my husband has seen two urologists. It has only made me even more grateful for the thorough testing Dr. Stigen did when I was seeing her. The way she tests hormones shows so much more than just having one blood draw (progesterone levels can fluctuate greatly throughout the day, for example) to base a diagnosis upon. No other doctors recommended supplements that she did for myself and my husband, and they didn't seem to care about whether I had endometriosis or not (I did have mild endo that Dr. Stigen removed). When I had a miscarriage, she was incredibly comforting and supportive.
