Sidebar at Whiskey Row - dropping in this downtown bourbon bar I didn't expect to have one of the best burgers of my life, but that's what happened when I strolled in on a Saturday afternoon. The place was empty but the bartender was a good guide. His bartender patter had a rhythmic cadence as he extolled the virtues of their fare offerings. I went with the Death Penalty to chase a little heat, although the name is more menacing than the bit. This isn't a mouth scorching, heartburn inducing culinary dare, but quite simply a perfectly delivered burger with toppings that work well together to deliver a robust flavor with a nice touch of heat. Being my first time in Kentucky I asked for a recommendation for a nice shot of bourbon to sip while I waited for my meal, with the caveats that I'd like for it to be from a lesser known, small distiller and under $25 for the drink. He delivered with a shot of Minor Case Straight Rye Whiskey that has a sherry cask finish from Limestone Branch Distillery. It was smooth with no bite and a nice linger. Three solid hits between the burger, bourbon and bartender - would definitely recommend. read more

Terrible service! And then when I complained about the bad service, I was refused drinks. This felt vindictive and/or perhaps even discriminatory because I use a magnifier to read menus due to my visual disability. They were unwilling to give me their rationale for refusing service. I wasn't originally planning on writing a review for Sidebar but after finishing my dinner I decided I needed to because the burger was so great. I started with an order of 4 mozzarella sticks because I saw them on a table I walked past coming in. They turned out to be some of the best I've had in a while. Perfectly cooked and they come with a large side of marinara sauce, which is a welcome change from many restaurants that give you a skimpy side of marinara. Back to the burger. Over the past few years I've been disappointed by thicker burgers, and have mostly ordered smash burgers. I took a chance with this thicker burger at Sidebar and I'm glad I did. I ordered it medium well and it came out perfectly cooked and was even tender and juicy despite ordering it that way. I just ordered the normal burger, but they have a large selection of specialty burgers that I will definitely try next time I'm in town. The restaurant itself has a nice decor, cozy and welcoming. I sat in the bar area and the only have a couple comments on how it could have been better. All of the barstools, even at the high top tables, don't have seatbacks on them. Although the cushions were very comfortable, sometimes it's nice to have a seatback to rest on. The only other weird thing was, although they had a lot of TVs, they were all playing really random and weird programs. One was the news, one was food network, two were different women's softball games, and one was paramount network with some boring Hallmark-style movie on. I was watching the NCAA baseball college World Series in my phone and probably could have asked to them to change one of the TVs to the game, so I won't fault them for me not asking to change the channel...but maybe the server could have obviously seen me watching it on my phone and asked if I would like one of the TVs changed. Besides that, the service was friendly, prompt, and attentive the entire time I was there. I'm glad I stopped in and would definitely come back again next time I'm visiting Louisville. read more

Had some clients for a casual dinning experience. Reservations were easy online, we showed up 15 minutes early and needed to add a couple more to the group, Lissa, easily accommodated us. We had a sampler plate of appetizers it was great. I got the side bar cheeseburger, I'm a bit of a cheeseburger snob, so I don't usually have high expectations. They make their burger from blend of Certified Angus Beef with chuck, brisket, and short rib. I will say it may be the best flavored burger I've had. Friendly staff quick service and fair prices. It was definitely loud, but we were able to carry on our conversation without any issues. We all ordered burgers, and they were good overall. The drinks, however, were nothing special. I loved everything about my experience here. I was traveling alone and just passing through Kentucky. I stopped at a museum and saw this restaurant was a short walk away. I sat at the bar and it was easy to find a table. The bartender was the waiter and he was very attentive and knowledgeable. The burger was wonderful all of their burgers are served medium or medium well I believe that was noted on the menu and it's not normally my style but was overall delicious. The Cajun fries were good perfect combination of spicy and crispy flavor. It's nice inside a little dark but nice. The bar was comfortable and for a quick solo meal everything went perfectly. They have a great selection of bourbon if I had more time I would have gotten into it but the old fashioned I had was good just wish I had more time to explore and enjoy their menu. read more

This place was great. You walk down the hill of Whiskey Row and find this hidden gem. Burgers are their specialty. They have many different burgers, mostly with a legal theme. You could get just a regular burger, but with the great options I wanted to try something else. I had the hung jury burger with parmesan truffle fries. This was a thick burger, cooked to a perfect medium. Grilled mushrooms and onions topped with beer cheese. The flavors mixed wonderfully. The fries were served with aioli on the side for doing, this was great as you could use less or more depending on your preference. Great place for a quick dinner. read more

We wanted food while spending the morning and afternoon at the chow wagon and didn't want to eat vendor food. So we walked to the Sidebar. We opted to sit outside on the patio which entailed ordering food at the bar and having it brought to us. We split a burger, fries and cole slaw and i always request hot fries or i will send them. The fries were cold but they did bring hot ones upon request. The slaw was nasty and inedible. They switched that out for brocolli which was steamed and buttered, served hot and delicious. Cool setting. So many differnt nooks and crannies for seating. Be sure and out the patio, which is a small, narrow spave betwern two brick walls. I have not been here since before covid and will not be back after last nights nightmare. There is a big convention in town and Louisville restaurant week . Staff claimed there were 2 servers on , not sure you could call them servers . I went in and stood at the hostess stand for 5 minutes. I was wondering if they switched to seat yourself . I stepped in several feet from the hostess stand then a guy in the kitchen alcove steps out from being on his cell phone. Ask if want the bar or a table. I picked a table. I was seated across from the kitchen . From that point forward I started to become sick because there was this heavy fryer grease Oder coming from the kitchen it was overwhelming. Made me loose my appetite. I sat here another 5 minutes and still no server . No I will be right with you . Just nobody. Table next to me had recently got food and was putting condiments on it and cutting so I thought there surely would be one by soon before I passed out or barfed from fry grease smell. I finally got up and stood by the middle of the stairs waiting for any staff. Then the tattooed host guy and what turned out to be a sever . Short dark hair glasses chubby with an attitude. I asked if there was a server in my section since now I had been there 10 minutes and they were not that busy . The response was a nasty growl of there is only 2 servers. We will be there soon. Now I was debating leaving as almost another 5 minutes go by. Been there almost 15 Minutes and nothing. In fact tattooed host guy was also running food . Where were the servers , seriously? The tattoo host guy came and took my order at this point I knew I was getting no service because they just couldn't do their job. I just order the milk shake .the bourbon ball milkshake. It took from 7:11 pm to 7:23 pm another 12 minutes just to bring a shake . It like it was a burger that had to be cooler 12 minutes. Even the couple who had just got their food was done eating now. In the upper deck the had 3 tables, a couple , a group of 4 women then a table of 6 guys . On the main level they also only had 3 tables with about 3/4 guest each . All already had drinks and had ordered . The tattoo guy continued to bring food out . The 2 females that were hired to be servers literally did nothing. Then could not handle 3 tables each . Then the dark hair fat one complained to me there were only 2 servers . Seriously most restaurants give you 6 tables and you can't handle 3 without crying. No work ethic there . Not my fault you can't handle the job . Wasn't not busy enough to justify more servers . Maybe if the 2 there Jody worked. Oh shake was mediocre. I'm in Louisville a good bit for work. Most of the food downtown skews bar, which means not so healthy. So I was happy to see some healthier options on the menu of Sidebar when I came here for a work dinner during my most recent trip to Louisville. We were a party of 8 and since it was a Tuesday seating wasn't a problem. We ordered drinks and the benedictine dip and nachos for the table. The dip was like tzatziki without the garlic...really fresh. The nachos were good too, kind of standard nachos with a nice amount of toppings. People ordered burgers but I was excited about the salmon sandwich so got that with ancient grains and kale as the side. I didn't know a kale salad was an option or I would have ordered that. The sandwich was good and I ended up adding the leftover benedictine dip to it. The grains were okay. A little bland but I was happy to not be eating French fries again. I really enjoyed this place and will come back, I'm sure, since I'm here a good bit. read more

Wow. I am celiac and this place was great. I had a fantastic burger that came with a gluten-free bond. I avoided the fries since they are cooked in oil that is cross contaminated. I finished off with a vanilla milkshake which was out of this world. I like Smokey old fashions. I was there a while back & the 50ish bartender , not sure if his name was Dan. He wouldn't smoke the drink because he didn't like them or didnt want to smoke it in general because he didnt like them smoked himself. What kind of customer service is this? The 2nd time I went, the blonde spiky haired manager was happy to do so. So if u want one smoked, ask 1st. If they dont do it then head over to Jeff Ruby's, they the best one , they open at 5.
