Came here for an early dinner and enjoyed the experience. This was my second time coming. We were initially the only ones in there, but several others followed suit. The person working the tables was alone, but efficient. We ordered two meat based entrees and a veggie sampler. They put everything on one plate for easy sharing (they asks your preference). The portions are perfect for sharing. The injera was a little bit more sour than my taste prefers, but it was still of good quality, texture and portion. The beef was so well seasoned. It is moderately spicy, so expect that. The veggies were delicious as well and pair well with the beef. We had the ground beef and the tips both. We got the ground meat cooked vs raw but you can choose. The restaurant is nothing fancy, but clean and decorated for the cuisine. The music playing meets the moment as well. The good: The restaurant is pretty. It's not much to look at from the outside, but well decorated inside, clean, stocked tables (and clean/stocked washroom). The food was very tasty, the portions are large, and the injera was warm and plentiful! Everything plant based is well marked on the menu. I also had hot ginger tea, which tasted fresh and had plenty of flavor without adding any sugar to it. I would be back for their food alone. Meh: The service was so-so. It wasn't busy (3 tables), but our server was not very attentive, did not introduce himself, or even ask if we'd ever had Ethiopian cuisine before (we hadn't). We asked if the vegetarian combo was good to share, to which he said no, but he also didn't offer any other information and seemed maybe a bit bothered by us not knowing what we wanted to order off the bat. My spouse is vegetarian, but I'm not, so we picked two vegetarian dishes so she could try mine as well. Check was slow coming and we felt awkward using the very loud call button on the table since the dining room was so quiet/calm. I'm not the biggest fan of Ethiopian food, but my wife loves it and so when there's a place we go wherever we are. Despite me not being a big fan, Nafkot ranks up there amongst the others that we've had in DC and Va. the food tasted fresh and flavorful and what I really appreciated above other places we've been is they don't make the food "Ethiopian hot" automatically. Most places the Berbere spice is on 10 and most of the dishes are set to kill not stun; but Nafkot makes the food to a nice medium spice level and so I was able to eat everything on the family style platter. Parking was easy, pricing was reasonable and all in all it's a place I'll def bring my wife back to when we're in the area. read more

This was my first experience with Ethopian food. I met a friend there who likes this place a lot. She's vegetarian and I'm not so I asked the waitress for recommendations. She asked me a few questions and gave a few recommendations. I went with the Lega Tibs (beef with onions, tomatoes and bell peppers) and it comes with Injera (Ethopian bread). My friend mentioned that the Injera by itself doesn't really have a taste. However, using the Injera to scoop up my food and the juices gave the Injera a pleasant taste. I was more than pleased with my meal. Plus it was filling. We also had a pot of ginger tea. It came with lipton tea bags if we wished to use them (we didn't). We enjoyed the taste of the ginger tea and other spices. All in all, a great first experience. I'm looking forward to going back and trying other items on the menu. read more

Nafkot is one of the best (if not the best) Ethiopian restaurants in the area! My friends and I came for dinner one night and shared the Doro Wot, Misto, and Vegetarian Combo. They plated it beautifully on the injera once they brought it out to the table. Amazing presentation and amazing flavors! The tea was also great. [Coronavirus review] They're kind of hidden away, but the restaurant was quite pleasant inside, and they were celebrating something when I stopped by, a celebration that involved a bunch of people speaking a language that I didn't understand, popcorn, and coffee. I felt bad declining the coffee, but Ethiopian coffee is strong stuff and I needed to get some sleep that night. Their indoor dining operation allowed plenty of socially distant space and they used appropriate caution and care, and despite the fact that I was obviously the odd man out, they made great effort to make me feel welcome. I wasn't sure what to expect in an area where there aren't many Ethiopian places (unlike my native DC), but they delivered upper-echelon cuisine from my perspective. The sambusas, flaky pastries filled with lentils, were quite spicy and hearty and I enjoyed them immensely. Ginger tea turned out to be an aromatic gingery drink that came with a standard tea bag. The star of the show was unsurprisingly the shiro, a hot and spicy chickpea stew. While I missed the variety of getting a veggie combo, they did offer their shiro with a small side of collard greens, which made for a nice contrast. The injera were quite large, and I canceled my dessert plans due to being overly full. For those who haven't had it, Ethiopian is a distinctive mix of flavors. The injera is a fermented flatbread, and the sourness of it is definitely an acquired taste for the American palate. The method of eating spicy stews by scooping them up with spongy flatbread may be a reach for those used to forks and knives. But as a convert myself, I do suggest giving this place a try, they do the cuisine well. read more

We had ... --- The Nafkot Vegetarian Combo (A combination of Split Peas, Lentil, Chick Peas, cabbage, beetroot, and vegetables) --- The Dora Wat (Chicken cooked to tenderness in a spicy Berbere sauce with onions, garlic, ginger and clarified butter. Served with a hard boiled egg). --- The Sambusa Lentils (Pastry shell filled with your choice of Lentils cooked with special herbs). The three dishes were more than enough for 2 adults. I encourage you to try an authentic Ethiopian coffee experience or tea. We had the Special Ethiopian ginger tea pot towards the end of our meal and had Nafkot Mix Juice which is Mango, Guava and Cranberry Juice. This is not a watered-down juice. It is nice and thick. Pure. In terms of service, the waiter was kind and helpful and service was quick. The atmosphere was nice and the music was the perfect volume. All in all, definitely going to be a staple restaurant in my book! I recently travelled to Ethiopia & had some delicious food. I was craving that same authentic cuisine once I came back. We happened upon Nafkot on Yelp after finding our favorite Indian restaurant in Raleigh closed due to COVID-19. What a happy accident! It's back in a strip mall so it's a little hard to find but definitely worth the hunt! We'd had Ethiopian before but this was by far the best! It was so sooooo good! Not only was the food divine, but the service was perfection. We ordered the Misto and the Awaze Tibs at the suggestion of our server and it did not disappoint. In fact, my husband and I had to force ourselves to stop eating when we got full because it was so tasty. We also got one of the Ethiopian hot teas which was the perfect complement to our meal on a cold night. Truly, this is one of the best meals we have had in Raleigh..maybe ever. Highly recommend this place if you're in the mood for a lovely food adventure. Just be aware that traditional Ethiopian meals are served on injera bread on a communal plate shared with the people at your table. You tear off the bread and eat the food with your fingers. Great for family and couples, maybe not so much for business dinners or first dates, particularly in light of COVID-19 right now. However don't miss out on this place. My husband and I visited this restaurant for the first time last Friday. They had just opened for the day so we were they only ones in the restaurant. We were immediately greeted by the owner (such a sweetheart and so helpful with explaining what we ordered) and the aroma of the foods. I ordered the Doro Wot (Chicken) and my husband ordered the Kaye Wot (Beef), both so full of flavor, and so delicious. We also ordered their Sambusa Beef, which resembled the filipino egg roll, lumpia -only 10,000 more flavorful, and we both had thier Baklava. Soooooo yum! Oh, and be prepared to eat with your fingers!! (Tradition in Ethiopia) I honestly think it made the food taste even better! The whole experience was different for me because I hadn't eaten Ethiopian food before or had a dish that you use the bread as a fork to eat your food. While we had our favorite place, you could close your eyes and pick good Ethiopian pretty much anywhere. Perhaps pay closer attention to your customers. I was waiting for my party for 40 minutes. Not even offered water as i waited. We Needed to wait on checks after dinner. Flagged a waiter a number of times We asked for our checks and we were told "oh sure we can get you a check or you can pay up at bar" It felt like an imposition asking to pay. You also had a lovely father with sweet twin boys who walked out because besides declining his request about food you also never brought water or anything to drink to his table.
