This cemetery runs along Barons Creek and is hidden from view from Highway 290 just a couple of…read moreblocks away. It was established in 1846 and there are quite literally thousands of interments here. This is a very orderly, well-maintained cemetery which has different sections. The vast majority of graves are surrounded by neat and orderly concrete borders. Three sections of the cemetery are completely covered in concrete, while the other sections have earth and grass separating the interment sites. You'll find one area near the entrance where many graves are surrounded by the original ironworks of the early 20th century. At the back of the cemetery is a section where victims of the Spanish flu were buried enmass at the turn of the century. There is also an African-American section, but there is little in the way of representation of those graves. Also, near the rear of the property is a section reserved for infants and children. After talking with one of the volunteers who care for the grounds, there will eventually be a website and hopefully a chapel coming in the next couple of years. Currently, there is no kiosk or information booth pertaining to who is buried where on the property. By far one of the most interesting cemeteries I've visited outside of New England! After reading…read moreabout the mysterious, historical seashell covered graves, I had to add it to my list! There are many beautiful gravesites scattered around the grounds just covered in beautiful seashells of various colors. Most of the headstones of the shell graves I saw were dated in the 1800s as well! Some of the graves were completely covered and some just had a cross or heart shape made out of the large scallop shells. All were oddly lovely to behold. And the most fascinating part about it is that no one really knows why these graves are covered in the shells! And only the older graves from that era have them. A lot of the graves are of the earlier townsfolk that came over from Germany and some speculate this might have been a custom from the "old world". Definitely adds an extra element of curiosity to ponder while wandering around the lovely grounds. It's easy to find and very pleasant in the spring with wildflowers everywhere and cooler weather. There are gravel paths large enough for cars to park. The entrance is well marked and the GPS will take you there easily. And while the shell graves are scattered around the grounds, they are obvious as you walk around - so they are easily found.

Fast forward to us not only being emotionally crushed by a sudden death, but the fact we had no funeral plans. It was unerving to call them while my fathers body was still in the hospital room next to me, but the woman who I talked to on a weekend evening calmly explained the process and assured me we'd get through this as quickly as possible to start the grieving process. They handled everything as they coordinated certificates, transportation, and even got us in touch with a cemetery I had been trying to find a contact for years to for myself. They helped me create a customized service for dad, and were very accommodating to help keep my mother's stress levels down during and after the funeral. The attention to every detail and the personalized care made me get funeral plans for my entire family with them. I cannot thank them enough on thank you Thursday for helping me get through the worst days of my life.

They met with us the same day, listened to what we were attempting to accomplish in terms of a memorial service, had references readily available, and allowed us time to use their conference room and pull all the elements together. On the day of the service, they were more available than we had ever expected them to be, and didn't rush us in any way. Everything went perfectly, and their services were an important reason why it all went so well. For an extremely cost effective way to handle final expenses, we didn't feel like we were getting sub par service; far from it. I've been to the full service places that come with plenty of guilt to push you to spend more money during a time where you are ill equipped to make good decisions.
