Fun target golf course. You almost have to make a decision on whether to lay up or go for it on most holes, decision, decisions. Most greens are elevated with false front so it is quite challenging, which I love. It is tucked away from highway 80, quiet and peaceful. The course setting is Beautiful and many of the holes are breath taking. The course needs some TLC. The only employee that was above expectation was the man checking in us in. The so called starters were kids and need to attend some customer service and soft skills training. At the prices they charge for green fees one expects a level of service as well as professional appearance. I am glad I got to play hear although I dont think I will be returning anytime soon, to many other options in the area. read more

I was so excited to play. I'm a 12 index and my son is 4.1 index. We drove over from Tahoe. Killer clubhouse, but the course needs to be reworked. Not worth $135 a round. I wouldn't play it if u gave me $135. I feel bad for the review (it's my first ever), but I hated the course. Blind shots, heavily sloped fairways, and greens that made no sense with slopes to severe. Greens are very rough. Killer views. Would have been better to leave my clubs in the car and just go for an 18 hole walk. read more

I played a round here with my Brother in Law on a Sunday morning, 7:30 tee time. Here is the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: The Good: * We booked a GolfNow tee time and the rate was $65 with a cart, the lowest rate in the area courses for a Sunday morning. * Pace of play was not bad, we ended our day at a little over 4hrs. * The views from most of the holes are absolutely breathtaking. The Bad: * The course was in pretty rough shape, weeds all over, brown spots on the greens, tee boxes in bad shape- the bunkers...forget about it. * We did not see one Marshal or cart attendant the whole day, it was a weekend so they probably would have made a killing. * One of the holes on the back 9 was just a flagstick in the middle of the fairway. For a high-end golf course, it was kinda weird. The Ugly: * When we checked in, the lady at the desk was not helpful whatsoever. She never asked if it was our first time there, which being that it is a little out of the way, probably was the case. It took us getting lost looking for the 1st tee for her to realize we may have needed some help. * Can you guys throw up a few signs telling players where the next hole is? The distance between holes is significant and at times it can be easy to get lost. * Many of the holes here have blind tee shots, so if you play here for the first time be hyper-aware of this. We were almost hit by a drive due to this. read more

Drove 7 hours to get to a 4:30 tee time. It's June 20th and the sun doesn't set till nearly 9. Told that carts need to be back by 7:30. Apparently they are under staffed. So we paid for 9 even though i was really looking forward to 18. Quickly realized that the understaffing extended to maintenance. Now, i don't think i'm much of a critic as i'll play all sorts of courses, but the conditions were farm-like. Tall grasses in the fairways, tee boxes that looked as bad as the greens (both had nearly equal length grass). It's the middle of prime season. If the course looks like this now, they really should just shut it down or sink some serious money into it because i have zero desire to play here again and any real management would be appalled. The cart paths are horrid and the fairways not much smoother. I'd prefer to walk and this course is basically unwalkable, but is also a terrible cart ride. Moving along, i wanted to buy some new golf shoe's, they had none. The 2 basic cocktails we ordered amounted to $34. It was a total fail from start to finish. We are at this resort for 4 nights and am worried the rest of the resort is operated as poorly now, hope i am wrong. Oh, there was no beverage cart and the restrooms were closed. read more

We came up for a little getaway to hike and enjoy the Fall colors. As a treat we upgraded to the Nakoma Resort to include the dinning and upscale Resort. Upon arriving we were impressed at the architecture of the hotel, how well it fits into the surrounding Sierra foothills. After checking into our rooms, we becoming change our minds. The room had to have the worst floor plan ever. The sink, although attractive is almost unusable. The bathroom is the same, I refer to both the sink and mirror as bathroom, but yet there in the bedroom, very odd. And does not allow for any privacy while getting ready together. Our toilet ran continuously, and we had luke warm water not hot water. I should add that upon to the front desk with the bathroom issues they did refund a portion of one our room rate. read more

What a terrible waste this place has become. Finally have given up on thinking that the staff is going to care what golfers think here. We've been playing here for over 20 years -- the course is ridiculously difficult, with crowned greens, some of which are terribly small with little area for bailout, and other holes where a few modifications would make the course much more playable and enjoyable. The staff has received overwhelming feedback on this over the years. Have they done anything about it? Nope. They believe that focusing on everything BUT the golf course will bring people here -- the restaurant, bar, outdoor dining, the rec center, the hotel, the market, the real estate..... It's almost like they consider the course to be an anchor around their neck. So while it's common to see a full parking lot at Whitehawk, Grizzly Ranch and Graeagle, the parking lot here is almost always empty. No one comes back to play a course repeatedly when they get their head kicked in every time out. They've done nothing to soften the course and we know TONS of people who never want to play it again and ask to play the other courses in the area when they come to visit us. We used to play this 6-10 times a year. This summer, I played it for the first time in three years..... and even more disheartening, it was in terrible shape. Just don't plan to bother ever again until/unless the people who run this place finally care for it as much as the surrounding community would like them to. They don't deserve our dollars at this point. To the staff/ownership: Get your act together. Cut trees down on the right side of #11. Rework the crowned greens, especially on #1 and #9. Fill in bunkers on #4 and #5 to give golfers a chance to hit a decent shot into the green. And for Christ sake, FIX THE CHIPPING GREEN. Have you forgotten it's there? It's been left to rot. (Oh, and would it kill you to make it easier to get food / drinks at the turn? Little hint here: we've started bringing our own stuff with us when we play here because it takes too damn long to go all the way into the bar to pick things up that we ordered from the 8th tee and get back to the 10th tee box.) The layout has the potential to be incredible. It's terribly unfortunate that management, who apparently aren't golfers, are too stubborn to care about what the actual golf community thinks about their course. Until they do, very happy to spend my money at Grizzly, Whitehawk and Graeagle, even though they're 10-20 minutes further away. Much better experiences, much more playable. read more

This place is terrible and terrifying. Paper thin walls. Crazy man next door screaming and banging on the walls starting at 12:30 am . Screaming "Crazy B***H, F***ing W***e" to no one in his room. He slammed doors all night. Visitors should also note that no one is here at night. Staff and Management leave and don't return until morning. I can't believe we were suckered into staying here with the sleek advertising. One restaurant open at "Resort". Not the Frank Lloyd inspired restaurant fifty44 . BTW there is an extra charge that they sneak in for "resort fee". It is 25.00 nightly. We paid for a Winter getaway.. suppose to be 20% off , but nowhere noted. Beds hard, pillows old. Save yourself from this experience and go somewhere else. I've stayed at a holiday Inn that was better than this place. I can't wait to go home so I can sleep! read more

This is the most beautiful course I have ever played. There's something on every hole. It was maintained and you're nice and far apart so it's hard for people to catch up to you. The staff was super friendly and amazing. The gentleman greeting us and getting us carts was extremely kind and very helpful. His tips on the 6th hope definitely kept me out of trouble there. It was the best golf experience I had. I read a lot of reviews on how challenging the course was (and I'm pretty new so I shoot high) and it was definitely challenging but the best game I had. I'd say no matter what your handicap it's a good course for anybody. Just know your limits and what you can shoot. The club house is gorgeous and so is the scenery. I wish I could give this club 10 stars! read more

Nakoma Resort & Golf - Deer at the 11th Tee box - Golf Near Me - Clio, California

We stayed at the Nakoma Resort for 2 days and golfed at dragon today. This place is incredibly mismanaged and seems that whoever owns really doesn't care if people have a good stay. There is no coffee on the property unless you use a Keurig and powdered creamer. No staff on the property from 8pm til 8am. The pool closes at 7. The restaurant stops serving at 630 pm. With nothing to do after 7 we tried to watch a movie. The movie channels were "not working". Two hours later the power went out (no one on property because it was 8pm). The only place to get breakfast opened at 8am which is when we teed off so no breakfast for us. The sprinklers were on on every hole the whole four hours we golfed. Many times we had to switch tee boxes to stay dry or do a "run and hit". That being said, the few staff members we saw were nice. They obviously do there best with no support from the owner. Such a shame. We will never come here again. Plenty of nice places to choose in the area but this isn't one of them read more

This is not what I expected at all. There was no mention or pictures that show that the pool and hotel are separate buildings. On Expedia it shows and tells of an indoor pool but no employee could tell me if there was one .. we couldn't find it. The rooms and lobby are very sterile. The shower is beautiful with a glass door but you have to reach in, get all wet with freezing water to turn it on and then wait .... we had lunch up top and waited over a half hour to be acknowledged at our table. Three waitresses bustled about helping the other 2 tables and ignored us completely until I said something. Halfway through our meal - which was delicious - the table next to us full of golfers asked for shade and the General Manager took ours and gave it to them. There were 5 other and empty tables from which he could have taken an umbrella. When I said something he said 'I'm sorry, they just got off the golf course'. I spoke to the woman at the front desk about the shade thing and she Pretty much brushed it off. So if you aren't an important golfer and still want to pay a ridiculous price for a room, I suggest you go elsewhere. Does anyone out there know if there actually IS an indoor pool? read more

Not sure where to begin but here goes: The restaurant which was advertised as high end food fell was short of expectations. The food and cocktails took an eternity to be delivered (20 mins for the drinks and 11/2hrs for the overdone cold steaks, elk special or so it was advertised and cold venison). With drinks and terrible food came to plus $100 per person. The waitress was constantly apologizing, and to other tables, knowing the experience was very poor. The rooms are very nice but zero service when we returned from there lousy golf course. No service at all to the two other rooms that were booked. No new towels, no coffee, not toiletries, no nothing. Extremely poor service for such expensive accommodations. I wrote to the GM and front of he house manager to explain why everything was below customer expectations but zero replies, hence this very poor review. read more

Just want to say I don't know if I want to write this review because I feel like I want to keep it my little secret. That said, the 15 people I have told about this place in the last 2 days will start to spread the word anyhow. What first? The amazingly beautiful Clubhouse? The Nakoma Lodge? The fact that Frank Lloyd Wright designed the clubhouse? The amazing Adventure Conceierge Frank Gulla? Well then, we stayed at the Nakoma Lodge. An oasis of contemporary design among the Plumas County valley of God, Green, Streams, and energy of goodness. I suggest staying on the golf course view with a balcony. We stayed in the Forest View, more like parking lot view, but yet a better view than anything I've seen in the last 4 years. Check in first. Call Frank and let your imagination go..... He's a true Concierge. Horse back riding today? Okay! Golf for 4 on your back patio? Spa services for 2? Okay! River Rafting? Okay! Sledding in winter? Okay! Reservations at the 5 star restaurant? Craft beer tasting? Okay! Let your imagination go..... Like for Reals! In the winter month we enjoyed play time at the heated pool, sauna, hot tub and a fresh brew. I await the indoor Olympic sized play area, pool and movie theater. I should also mention, it is surrounded by an amazing community of homes, that should you want to invest in now (before all the amazing homes are sold) do it now! Now I let the world know my secret, well I will have to put up with having a wait, which I did not experience. I would call the front desk ahead and ask what is "open". It is seasonal for some things, but don't let that stop you. My heart, mind and body was revitalized here (cell services are limited unless your on Wi-Fi, THANK GOD) I checked out of work for 2 days and checked into quality time with my family and myself. No, I didn't see any minorities other than myself. However, the golfers I met at the course were very friendly. The staff I interacted with were welcoming and friendly. I truly enjoyed my day here. The course was in good shape, except the greens were in rough shape as noted by others. That fact did not prevent me from enjoying my time here. Beautiful scenery. Passing thru Sierraville on my way to the course, I saw before my eyes the definition of bucolic. Like something out of a novel. Just beautiful. The course is fair in my opinion, just move up a tee as others have stated. Definitely will play here again. read more

Spent several days there for a business retreat. Golf was excellent. A challenging course set in amazing part of nature. The club house is beautiful architecture. Dinner was slowly to appear, but the kitchen did get hit all at once with a very large group. The food was excellent. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Excellent facilities, but not really set up for handling business meetings (ours were held in rec room of the lodge). The lodge itself is new and clean with decent rooms. The rec facilities were new, clean and excellent. Nice size pool and gym. Note, the gym is not open early if you are used to an early morning workout. Rock wall and kid room. Even a Netflix based movie theater. This is an excellent getaway vacation location. read more

Played the course today after last playing here more than a dozen years ago. Someone in the pro shop reported that they have worked a lot on the course since then to make it more playable and less punitive and I think they have succeeded. I played the course from the white (#3) tees and found it to be challenging but fair (mostly). Course was in great shape and the discount I got from using a GolfNow HotDeal made it super economical to play. I sent a photo from every tee box to my son who was unable to play with me. The two of us will definitely be back to play this course again next time we're in the Reno-Tahoe area. read more

We came up here to look at Nakoma for a wedding venue. Getting up to the area was a bit of a struggle. Altitude was awesome. The food was great. The rooms in the lodge were not so great. There were two showers in the one bathroom (one with a tub that looked older). We supposedly had the nicest room in the place. The bathroom floor was extremely slippery & cold. I am not sure why they would install that material. I didn't like that the different facilities weren't walking distance to each other (unless you are wearing sturdy shoes). Staff was very nice. I felt like for off season, it was pretty pricey. read more

Maybe one of the worst resorts we've stayed at. The staff at the pool treated my brother and his girlfriend and I like we didn't belong there. The pizza was somehow both burnt and still undercooked on top, the burgers were dry and the lettuce from the salad was wilted and old. The rooms are decent but nothing I would pay as much as they charged us for one night. Overall one of the worst experiences we've had at a hotel. I don't see a reason to stay here unless you have to like we did for a wedding. read more

I had the opportunity to play the gorgeous Dragon at Nakoma course yesterday.  It was my first visit, and I was reluctant to play the Dragon in large part because we had heard so many reports about the course being "too difficult" or "unfair."  I found it challenging for sure, but not too difficult or unfair. The course is beautiful, the landing areas are easily discernible and large, the fairways are like carpet and the greens are true.  When played from the tee box appropriate to the individual's abilities, the course is an amazing venue.  The challenge is there, but the rewards are great when a hole is played the way it was designed to be played. Club selection is key to a good round, just like at any other course. read more

Golf course review only. What has happened to this golf course? The course is in terrible shape. Fairways burnt out, greens with bald spots and moss, tee boxes with no grass and sand traps with tons of grass & weeds. There is no way this course is worth the price. There is no way this course is worth half the price. Too bad, it has a great location and an interesting layout. The course was in decent condition in 2018. Hope they can get it back together soon! We usually play it a couple of times a month, but won't go back this year as is the case with friends and colleagues we have spoken with that have also tried it this year. read more

We had planned to play 2 rounds here in a day but already after 5 holes we decided to try to live through one round and then go to another course in the area to play the second 18. The course is not as well maintained as others in the area but most of all, this course is extremely difficult. For us (10-20 handicap) it was all to difficult even though we didn't play that bad. So I would strongly advise to think a second and a third time before deciding to play here. Or as the locals told us: "Sure, everyone plays Dragon.... one time". read more

The golf course is very difficult and I recommend moving up one tee box from what you would normally play. Definitely explore the wonderful Frank L. A dear friend of mine took me here to play here and Wowzers!!! What a wonderful experience. A clubhouse designed by none other than the great Frank Lloyd Wright for starters. This place has the look and feel of a private course. Kind and gracious staff. Stunning views. Well maintained and challenging mountain course. I always like a course that has character and this is it. Even if you aren't here for the golf the ambiance of the lodge and the food would be worth the trip. The half chicken I enjoyed after the round was succulent and perfectly seasoned. Truly a beautiful experience!! read more

In the past I had heard many less than complimentary reviews about this course's unfair and overly difficult design, and I admit I never played it before the revamp in '14 ,but I found the course to be very fair and not overly difficult. there are a few sloping fairways and a couple drastic greens but no more than most any mountain course. that being said my advise to a golfer playing this course for the first time is to check your ego and play the proper tee box for your playing ability (as a 6 hcp I moved from 5 to 4 tee box and was able to shoot my hcp). The condition of the course was great, especially for a mnt course On my weekend trip I played here and Plumas pines and for similar price point there is no comparison the Dragon is head and shoulders above. aside from golf, the proshop is well stocked and clean (altho somewhat overpriced). We had lunch afterwards and that was right on par with the golf course GREAT. dining on the patio on a great weather day was very nice and everything we tried on the menu was very tasty (lamb sliders were unbelievable!). If there is one drawback that I should mention it is that the driving range is only long enough to hit irons. ~M read more

I played golf there on Sept 22,2016 we were in a frost delay so I decided to get a bite to eat at the bar.The server/bartender was colder than the exterior temp.When she asked what we will have, I ordered the breakfast sandwich and for $12.00 I might add,she asked bacon or sausage and I chose sausage and ordered a coffee for my playing partner.Well by the time the sandwich arrived(20 mins) we were notified by the starter we needed to go out the delay was over.I opened the sandwich and informed miss congeniality that the sandwich came with bacon instead of sausage she said,"what do you want a piece of sausage also"????,like I ordered it wrong,not I'm sorry let me take care of that,and to top it off we were the only two people in there at the time,It wasn't like she could have confused the order with someone else or that it took so long to get wrong because the cook was busy. A smile, a nice greeting and getting a customers order correct goes a long way read more
