Mostly empty parking lot early in the morning in the middle of July.

I cannot recommend this resort unfortunately. I booked two rooms for two nights on short notice for work for a coworker and myself. On our way up to the area we learned that the client we were working for was postponing by two weeks. So, upon check in I notified the front desk that we would only be staying the one night. Since we were over 24 hours until day two I expected to be charged only the one night. No Sir. They charged the full bill as if we stayed two nights. The front desk employees are not empowered to make decisions here so I asked to see the manager. She was off of course...for two days. Nobody could help me for two days. Finally after several calls the manager (Carrol Martinelli) worked up the courage to call me back. She would not budge and refund the one night and said that is their policy. This place is clearly hurting for business. Many of the rooms were not sold during our stay and this is in the middle of the summer. That I was able to get two rooms on such short notice should have told me there are issues with this resort. I don't understand how companies that do business like this expect to stay in business. I will not be booking business travel here, nor will I consider staying here with my family, though I would have come back otherwise. Please book your travel reservations with a different resort. This one does not value its customers. They are petty every chance they get.

Picture of the light coming into the bedroom from the bathroom "window" Sooooo weird!

Went there for a wedding. I was in the bridal party. For such an elegant resort it was lacking. PROS- It was absolutely beautiful. The food was good. CONS- Many of the staff where simply rude. There was not the greatest communication between the bar staff and wedding party and we felt we were treated poorly and the guys got more drinks than we did and when I inquired because we hadn't been served anything in hours and we all were parched I was snapped at. It was rather odd. And I thought for the most part, of the few drinks I had, they weren't great. The hotel rooms SUCK! Who thought it was a good idea to put a window thingy from the bathroom into the room?!! How utterly stupid. If someone has to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, or shower when someone is sleeping, the light from the bathroom shines into the room! why?! There is nothing special about these rooms. They may as well be at the Best Western Plus. The bridal suit is nothing special either. When we got there, our room had no screen door. It was off and just laying on the ground. When I asked the front desk people if that could be fixed (we were there two nights and the AC is not good so we wanted to be able to keep the door open without bugs getting in. I think that's understandable. The front desk lady was kind of rude and dismissive but a maintenance guy walked by and heard so he kindly fixed it for us. The three buildings (hotel, altitude (pool and rec stuff), top wedding venue/restaurant/bar), are all uphill and you can walk it, but not all can/should do it. But there is no food in the hotel, so you have to either walk, drive or rent a golf cart (at the top of the hill). It's an odd setup. We had drunk people walking back to the hotel and getting lost and walking into bushes and in the street to get back. Not safe and not fun. All in all this place was a very beautiful disappointment. I left the weekend feeling confused and not at ease.

    Ceiling in the restaurant.

Don't let the website fool you. All the amenities are scattered throughout their property and are NOT walking distance. Their "lodge" is better described as a clean, quiet convenience hotel. I completely agree with other reviews - who thought a window in the bathroom was a good idea? My roommate used the bathroom in the night and the light woke me up! Stupid design! The pool, fitness center, and casual dining are in a building about 1 mile up the road. Unfortunately, they don't open early so the in-room Keurig coffee maker is all you have. We were there for a 2-day golf tournament played at Graeagle and Plumas Pines with a 7:30am check-in, so we had to drive to Portola to find a place for to-go breakfast and coffee. We had to double back to the golf course. Nothing in this area is close. Cars are a must, so if someone is golfing early and takes your only car, the rest of you are stranded! Up the hill further is the main lodge. The beamed ceiling room in all their photos is their restaurant. The food was very good. Local vacationers shared it is one of the two really good restaurants in the area (Iron Door is the other, btw.) Get an early reservation if you want to sit outside or at a view table. More than 1/3 of the tables don't have a view. The bar, adjacent to the pro shop in that building is tiny and has no view at all. Not much of a 19th hole! It appeared most golfers rejoin their families by the pool, where the casual dining/bar is. The pro shop for the Dragon had lots of souvenirs and men's golf merch. There was very little women's golf merch. Nakoma appears more interested in selling lots. There are a number of gates to neighborhoods that appear empty. If this area develops, they have plans for a Market on the property, but it's TBD. If you are used to mid to high end resorts, it will disappoint. If you want a clean non-rustic hotel room, this place works. All the other local options are either very rustic or vacation rentals.

I've been wanting to visit this resort for sometime now and finally got the chance to visit in August. I'm going to give 4 stars for the entire experience including food, golf, activities and lodging. First - the "Inn at Nakoma" it was clean and room was ready when we arrived. Richard at the front desk was awesome. Very friendly and offered lots of information regarding activities in the property and surrounding area. Dark haired woman who worked in the afternoon never bothered to look up from the computer to say hello/good bye. I don't know her name as she didn't engage with us at all. Room was just ok in my opinion. The bathroom has a stained glass panel in it so if someone has to use restroom at night it lights up the entire room. I also didn't care for the bathroom sink to be outside of the restroom - same complaint - you wake up anyone sleeping when you wash your hands. Bed was comfortable enough but could use another chair in the room so you don't have to sit on the bed. The Lodge at Nakoma is where you will find their main restaurant FIFTY44 - when we visited they were only open Thursday - Monday. We were able to have dinner on a Monday night and it was fantastic! We started with a small charcuterie board and some ceviche. For our main, we ordered pan seared elk tenderloin, it came with house-made labneh, blackberry port reduction, cacao & peanut crumble, and smashed potato. We also ordered the Chilean Sea Bass - pan seared, blistered tomatoes, grilled leeks, oven roasted fingerling potatoes, sauvignon beurre blanc. We were so stuffed. Dragon Golf Course - what an amazing course!!! My hubby was in heaven playing here. Luckily - there weren't that many people playing the day we went out. Felt like we had the entire course to ourselves. All the staff in the pro shop were very friendly. We especially enjoyed talking to Bob! FIFTY44 Bar - right outside of the pro shop. Fun spot to grab a drink and eat. They serve breakfast and lunch "to go" but you can eat on premises. I ordered the avocado toast with poached eggs everyday - it was that good. We also had the burger and fries. Hands down best fires I ever had!! Great outdoor seating area with tables and sofa looking over the course. Stacey and Athena were great, friendly and funny!! Altitude Activity Center and the Middle Fork Bistro. The pool is beautiful and I was happy to enjoy sometime there. Water was a little chilly for my liking but I still got in! The Bistro was just ok. Seemed like they were out of things each time we were there. I did have a wonderful heirloom tomato salad with Burrata. The flatbread was thumbs down for me - too "doughy" Our waitress Beth was super sweet!! There are in the process of building some sort of "store" on site by the Inn. That would be nice so you don't have to drive off sight to get some snacks, wine etc. Overall it was a great visit and I will definitely recommend and will return. It is a pet friendly hotel and currently they only have to pet friendly rooms but Richard let us know that they will be expanding that soon. Ps- great for families as well because they have some rentals on their property instead of staying at the Inn.

This is a chic and new place for a family vacation! We stayed here traveling from the Lassen National Park to Lake Tahoe. Nestled in nature, the resort feels like a mountain chalet with modern amenities. There are plenty of activities to do such as rock climbing, basketball, game room, hiking trails and swimming in the heated pool and enjoying the hot tub. In addition to that, this hotel has a state of the art golf course. There are two restaurants, a bistro and a more formal restaurant. The food tastes homemade, fresh and delicious. The architecture of the restaurant is designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The staff are friendly, happy and hospitable. The hotels feels new and everything is kept very clean. For 320.00 a night the value outweighs the services and experiences received.

    Peace and quiet to recharge

Absolutely stunning! This is a beautiful, quiet, secluded place if you need to come recharge in nature while having all the amenities of home. Amazing views, stunning sunsets, great places to hike, and you can visit the world famous "Dragon Golf Course" or just simply relax by the pool and enjoy the private villas. The restaurants are 5 star food with a variety that changes weekly. Serene atmosphere but close to Truckee if you are into gambling and a faster pace environment. If your looking for some prime real estate, this place also has open houses with lots you can purchase and custom build your dream home or vacation investment. The pictures don't do it justice. This place is truly magical

Secluded location with great staff. The ladies at the front desk were top notch with excellent customer service skills. The room is nice although the windows on the second floor do not open and hot days the hotel air-conditioning cant keep up with the demand. The hotel is situated across the street and down the hill from the actual recreation area and pool. This alone can be a deal breaker for some. Nice quiet location and if your lucky you get a view of the golf course. Some other issues is that the restaurants are closed on Tuesday and Wednesday so if you want a meal you need to drive in to town that really doesn't have anything upscale. Do your research before booking a room to make sure to have your expectations met.

Clubhouse/lodge in the background-- huge swimming pool

Wow! A hidden gem in the Sierra mountains! Stunning area with a newish beautiful and well maintained hotel. Large rooms with pretty views of the trees and golf course. The nearby club house/lodge is exceptional - gorgeous architecture with huge heated swimming pool, impressive gym, rock climbing wall, pool table, games room, big fireplaces and more. Don't miss out on a meal at the nearby Nakoma restaurant--the building was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and the chef was exceptional. I don't golf but the course is beautiful and we'll maintained.

Stayed 1 night for business. The lodge was beautiful and the beds oversized. Temperature control was perfect and tall ceilings give the room a spacious feel. In room has fridge and 2 complimentary waters . Microwave in the vending are. Front desk is staffed 8 to 8. The coffee is my personal way to choose a re stay location. It was "ok" coffee. If you want to eat you have to drive to a separate facility across the highway. That was disappointing, I didn't make my way there. Overall peaceful, clean and lovely for a nights stay.

Pulling up to our secluded mountain villa in a winter wonderland.

I stayed 2 nights at the Nakoma Resort. It's a nice looking building. The rooms look nice ,…read moretoo...but in my opinion were not designed for the user/guest experience. As I entered the room I noticed the coffee area. I was happy to see I could have coffee in the room in the morning. It was a bit strange to see the sweeteners, sugar and cream in a zip lock baggie?!. It just seemed cheap and cheesy...not to mention there wasn't a stir stick to be had...and only 2 regular and 2 decaf Kcup. I asked for get more for the next morning and didn't not find it when I returned after hours. No front desk, or any other service after about 7 I think. I got some from my sisters' room thank goodness I will say the beds were pretty comfy. I sat on it to check it out and saw the ?window? into the bathroom which really caused me to wonder why someone would do that. It is obscure, but anyone in there can be seen pretty easily according to my sisters who were sharing another room. They were quite surprised as well. Another thing that got my attention was the height of the shower head. I'm just under 5'-7" and could just barely reach it to aim it or change the spray pattern. There is nothing in the tub to get traction and I had a couple of slips that I wasn't expecting...no grab bars anywhere!? After my shower I had to exit the 'bathroom' to the mirror and sink to shave and brush?!? It's located right next to the coffee cabinet... which it right at the door!... a counter with a sink and mirror. The 'bathroom' sink! Seriously?! What a dumb place for the 'bathroom sink! It's RIGHT at the door and there seems to be no thought of privacy in these rooms! The faucet at the sink is quite tall and as the water hits the very flat square sink the water splashes onto yo and the surrounding area! I had to start laughing...but was not happy. I turned on the 'lights' for the sink and laughed yet again. There is 1 light over head for the door but behind you...and the 'lighted' mirror. There are 2 lights at top and bottom the just throw a little 'glow'. I can't call it 'light' because it was so dim. So with all available lighting, it was woefully lacking! I don't have the makeup thing to worry about...but for ladies that do, lol, good luck!!! It's really hard to imagine how anyone designing this room had any thought of the guests. If I was there with an intimate partner...that might be one thing...but other than that...I like to get ready after a shower in private. It really blew my mind...bad designer!! Way more interested the 'look' than utility!!! I was also disappointed that the only place to have a sit down meal was all the way across the street and up quite a long driveway! You have to order from the bartender and then it's brought to you. again, seemed cheap and cheesy to me...but whatever. The Nakoma Resort seems to brag itself up as a luxury experience and everything I saw and experienced was WAY under 'par'! It seems there was no thought put into the guests convenience or experience...and it isn't inexpensive either...just sayin... If you can, stay somewhere else!

We usually enjoy our stay here yearly. This year customer service was subpar. It started with a…read moresimple light bulb being burned out. I asked two days in a row for a replacement, even bringing it to the front desk to a woman asking for it to be replaced and currently am sitting here without a bedside lamp. Richard at the front desk was friendly, but was unavailable when asking for assistance. Next, the toilet paper holder was hanging by a thread. Last, we could not get dinner reservations at the lodge or massage appointments at the lodge or nearby. Dinner is tricky around here and the front desk doesn't tell you that. Many places aren't open beyond 6:30 or at all and some will only take reservations and are booked. Our last night here we had to drive to Portola and have pizza in order to have food. Thank goodness the staff at the pizza place were happy to have our business and the pizza was delicious.
