Almost didn't leave a review since they already have so many great ones...but yes, I agree, Nan's store is awesome! Came on a Wednesday so Nan wasn't there, I was helped by Joy, who is pretty awesome too. I was looking for a nice dress, but not formal, told her what I was comfortable in and my favorite colors. I picked a few and she did as well. There were 2 other women shopping as well, over 50 like me, and Joy found time to help us all and was so friendly, helpful and fun. I actually had a good time. Oh! She also showed me some dresses from the sale rack. Its not an inexpensive store, I appreciated that she didn't just ASSUME I didn't want to see the sale dresses too. I never got any pushy vibe either.... I ended up with a dress that I just LOVE...perfect! If you need a nicer dress and appreciate some attention, I highly recommend this shop! I was peering in the window after the shop had closed but Nan invited me in as she was tidying up. She offered to let me try something on but as it was a very hot afternoon and there were too many beautiful & fashionable items (the Indian block light cotton fabric really caught my eye), I told her I would return although I live about 1 hr away. Nan Winters is a goddess. She's been in the fashion/retail business for 29+ years, and entering her store filled me with relief. I hate shopping, I hate trying on clothes, and I hate wearing dresses. When I asked my fiance if I could wear pants at our wedding and he flatly refused, I started to sweat a little bit. Okay, a lot. A coworker recommended that I stop in at Nan Winters' store in Petaluma. On a fluke spur-of-the-moment trip to the coast that turned eastward to aim toward wine country, I saw the sign for Petaluma and decided to make a pit stop at 23 4th Street. Nan normally requires brides to make appointments because she only has two changing rooms (and the racks of carefully-selected, eclectic wearables do really beg to be tried on). She, however, made a concession for me given that I had dropped in on a slow Sunday afternoon. Plus one star. While I pored over racks of gorgeous, gorgeous gowns, GT browsed through vintage nudie postcards of women. Plus one star. Nan carries some of the best and brightest in bridal fashion. Sue Wong, Watters and Watters, and SCALA, to name a few that made it into my dressing room. Plus one star. She also carries an exquisite line of locally sewn dreses that are custom made to exactly fit your measurements, at a decent price. Plus one star. During this particular trip I came away empty handed. The dress that GT liked best, I thought made me look like a lampshade, and the swirly skirt I liked best wasn't available in the color I wanted. However, I'm plotting my next trip to Petaluma because Nan can do custom orders for most of what she carries in her store, she is nice enough to let me buy off the rack if I need to (because I am procrastinating beyond belief), and who knows: if I wait a few more weeks maybe she'll have gotten in new shipments of more fabulous threads. I wish her store was closer. Sacramento, in all it's retail glory, really doesn't have a proprieter with the same level of taste and elegance that Nan possesses. The quality of what she offers, though, really is worth the trip. Plus one star. read more

My daughter purchased her prom dress here last year. This shop was a life saver. Long story short; the dress my daughter originally chose didn't work out. We had ONE WEEK to find the perfect dress! There's usually not much to choose from one week before prom; however we came across this lovely shop with a lovely lady. She had the PERFECT dress in the PERFECT color, which fit... Knowing that my daugther's fiance was going to be deployed to Iraq, they decided to wait until his return for the wedding, so plenty of time to shop and plan. Right.... My husband and I were across the country for a weekend. Got a call from the betrothed couple who said -- we really don't want to wait after all. We want to get married in 9 days because he ships out then. Yikes! Nan Winters to the rescue. My daughter found a beautiful Nicole Miller gown right off the rack that day. She went back the day before the wedding and found a beautiful veil. When i returned to Petaluma on Tuesday, I went right to the shop to look for a dress, only to find the shop closed. A pang of panic!!! But, Nan was in the shop and she kindly let me in. I found a dress. She referred me to a local seamstress who altered it in time for the wedding. Her service and calm-but - rapid responsiveness helped us with one of the most important elements of pulling together a small but very elegant event. BTW, he returned safely from his deployment and the newly weds were happily reunited a year later. read more

Visiting from Boston as my sister lives in Petaluma, and having been on the prowl for months to replace my favorite worn-out black leather bag, I walked into Nan Winter's boutique with my daughter Allie. Usually I peek in the window, sometimes I'll step inside, but rarely do I buy anything at overpriced (retail +) places. Cool styles, but then Nan's card says "Cool Stuff", so no surprise. Then I spied it: my new bag. Aubergine (deep purple, eggplant) leather bag with outside pockets, roomy, and I could afford it. Who'd have guessed? On my final hour of a 4-day visit in Petaluma, I purchased my new bag. I made a bridal appointment with Nan just the other day. Let me just say that after going through the wedding dress shopping experience at other stores, Nan's store is so refreshing. I have found that the wedding industry is a totally inorganic and rigidly constructed... rip off. A wedding is the beginning of a marriage, and it should be as colorful and unique as the couple is. The reason I say this is that Nan has created an environment that allows the bride or bridal party to be themselves. So, the facts: Pretty small wedding section, about a quarter of the store (however, most brides like to shop around... and this place should definitely be on your list.) Dresses of every color, pattern and description... sequins, silk, jersey. Dresses with vintage styling and modern, too... beautiful seems to be the main requirement. A good range of sizes, and Nan seemed to be very aware of how pieces fit. Only two dressing rooms, though Nan was kind enough to allow a girl to use her backroom to change in. Nan also carries dresses in multiple price ranges, and is just as enthusiastic about selling a sale item as she is selling a full price piece. My experience was great there... ultimately it's completely worth the trip! I did not expect to walk out with a dress on my first time in, but I was so charmed by the environment and the dress (on sale, off the rack... perfection.) Really, just fantastic. read more

Each dress was prettier than the last. I loved the slightly alternative bride look; very few poofy dresses and instead found endless elegant dresses perfect for every type of wedding. I had a wonderful experience with Nan at her adorable store! I have been searching for my wedding dress for a year and ended up finding it at Nan Winters!!!! I highly recommend this store if you are on the wedding dress hunt. As a last ditch effort I drove the 2 1/2 hours from where I live to Petaluma to check out Nan Winters, because I found out that two of my friends had found their wedding dresses there. I went in with an open mind, hopeful that I would find something different -all the other dresses I had tried on at other shops over the past year (about 30) had been pretty far from what I was hoping for; big, too busy, unflattering cuts, and two much fabric and rouching in my opinion. I was pleasantly surprised by Nan's taste. She picks lighter weight, flattering dresses and I found my dress, among a beautiful collection of unique, stylish and simple wedding dresses! I was in shock to have found something so perfect! If you are looking for a beautiful, flattering, and slightly less traditional dress check out Nan Winters! Nan is the sweetest lady that made bridal dress shopping on a Saturday afternoon really fun with my newly engaged girl friend. After a horrible experience at Bliss (only because of the obnoxious attendant that was helping us), we found a potential "winner" at Nan's. One of her designers (Olvi's) creates wedding dresses in an ivory color with stretchy lace (The Lace Collection) in a variety of styles but all form fitting and apparently really comfortable. This place is a cute little shop, and I would recommend calling ahead to make an appointment or make sure there aren't other appointments when you want to go because only one bride is allowed at a time. Nan herself is an incredible lady. Her shop was the first shop I visited when shopping for my wedding dress. I found the perfect one but I looked around. After visiting bridal shops after bridal shops all I could think about was the 1000 times better service Nan gave me, and the dress nan had. I called her from an hour away explaining my day hoping she'd hold the dress for me. I got to her shop two hours after she normally would have closed due to the traffic on the way there, the sweetheart waited for me, doing some work around the shop. I got the first dress I tried on in her shop. If I could give any bride a bit of advice it would be to visit Nan before you do anything else, she and her shop won't be beat. read more

Nan is so great! Her selection of dresses feels unique and well picked out. Some items are well discounted and from previous seasons. But she also has great new and contemporary dresses. She has a great knowledge of the items in the store, and it was such a fun exerience. I wanted a non-traditional wedding dress and she was right there with me helping be decide exactly what I wanted. The shop feels intimate, and Nan feels like an old friend that is there to help in any way. Also, the store is welcoming to shoppers and they sometimes will weigh in on what you are trying on :) Will definitey recommend this store to anyone shopping for a special occasion (it was recommended to me through word of mouth). read more

Her wedding dresses are so gorgeous and unique, not like those chain wedding stores. This is the place to go if you are looking for unique handmade wedding dresses AND they are completely affordable! Nan Winters is a "boutique", and not just geared towards wedding apparel either. She has a great selection of quality-made casual clothing and also great evening gowns and dresses. Her stuff flys off the racks too so its best to keep checking in about every few weeks because she's always brings in new styles so you want to get them while they are available. Nan Winters is a treasure! I've loved her store for years - she has wonderful unique clothing and accessories. Several times a week someone admires the purse that I bought there. Then when I was planning my wedding, and I just wanted a simple elegant dress, her store was perfect for me. I looked at all of the local bridal shops, and the dresses were more expensive and I saw very little that I liked. At Nan Winter's shop, the whole experience was relaxed and comfortable, and she has a great selection of elegant dresses that are unique and don't make a woman look like a giant cake. I ended up with a gorgeous Nicole Miller silk dress for about $400. She also has a great selection of dresses for mother of the bride, bridesmaids, prom, and parties. I found this place by accident and stumbled upon The Dress. My wedding is in two weeks and up until I came in here, I wasn't sure what to do about my dress. Nan was very sweet and helpful - but not pushy or bossy. She showed me some dresses I wouldn't have thought of - and ended up getting one. She helped me accessorize with earrings - she called me when a particular pair showed up that she thought would go perfect with the 40's flair of the dress. I love Nan Winters! She actually went to school with my mom. The best dress shop in town! I walked in there one day with my mom and I had one goal in mind.... I wanted to get my wedding dress from Nan. I wasn't going to go anywhere else but her store. She was so helpful and fun to work with. I walked in and I didn't need an appointment. She let me try on all her dresses. It was such a fun day. The first dress I tried on, I ended up purchasing. The dress was in my budget which made me so happy.
