As a novice of woodworking, I was blown-away by the intricate woodwork and finishings throughout the home. The three ladies that lead our tour of the home shared many interesting details about the property, its restoration, and details of Clara and Henry's years at the estate. Many of the restoration stories, like finding a tub for Henry's bathroom or how Clara had a section repainted white were intriguing. Even though much of the home, especially the second floor, is still being restored it was a fascinating experience.

The juxtaposition of the estate of an industrialist (or robber baron, or visionary, or racist, depending on your point of view) with a distinctive immigrant community makes for a striking reflection on Americana. The grounds include some gardens, and a lake with a path around it. Access to the river is limited, but it didn't look like that impressive of a river. The greenery is more worthwhile.

Uniroyal was founded 1892 as the United States Rubber Company in Connecticut as part of the merger of nine separate companies which was one of the biggest corporate consolidations at the time. They became a major supplier for General Motors as an OEM manufacturer. In 1985, Uniroyal merged its tire operations with B.F. Goodrich, forming the Uniroyal Goodrich Tire Company and they were later acquired by Michelin in 1990, ending its run as an independent company. And I can't remember ever having a Uniroyal on my many vehicles. The Uniroyal Giant Tire was built for the 1964 New York World's Fair as a Ferris wheel styled structure. There is a huge sign outside the location naming the site - however, that's the only information on it. There is only an unremarkable street address fastened to the chain link fence (which I am reasonably sure is not historic) which surrounds the place. Parking is limited to two spaces. The windows are closed off with steel grates - and they don't look like the original inhabitant put them there, either. The steps and doors are in poor condition. The woodwork around the building is in a state of rot. It may be advanced but the thickly applied and questionably historically correct paint doesn't allow full examination. The building is filled with a collection of junk. The walls, ceilings and floors have obviously been reworked over the decades with the result that what is in there is a confused presentation. It looks more like a museum of do-it-yourself failures than a historical site. The storm cellar door is rotten. The windows are filthy. The yard is mowed but that is all. In the grass and yard there are several hidden items like stones, wood and metal that are a hazard to simply walking. There is no trail to the door. No supporting material. In any case - it's an eyesore and dangerous to approach.

Unfortunately her flight cancellation, prevented her arrival. The Henry Ford Museum was gracious to pivot and offer everyone FREE admission to the museum for our inconvenience. I thank my Yelp Bestie for an annual membership pass that she won for two people. I am truly grateful. This was a prime time to turn lemons into lemonade! We decided to check out the DaVinci special exhibition, shop the Museum Store and have lunch at the Plum Market Kitchen, too. The DaVinci exhibit was amazing. I had no idea of how many inventions Leonardo DaVinci made. I was only familiar with the Mona Lisa painting and the Safety Bridge. The Room of Mirrors was pretty cool. Parking was within the parking and for the most part, parallel parking without marked lines. Finding the location is easy and the park is definitely marked on the road. The tea was lovely with various tea sandwiches that you would except to see at a fancy tea house. The real life Rosie's all came with at least 1 family member and were mixed in with the other guests. The tables were seat up in groupings of 4. The food was quite good. The history that was provided by the people who put on the Event provide interesting information about the local area. There was also a sing quartet who sang songs from the Era of the Rosie's. You also were free to see the rose bushes named for the Rosie's after the lunch and or tour the other buildings. I will definitely be back.

The beautiful site has historical homes and structures that have been converted into exhibits. You can visit the Eloise Hospital exhibit, find your old Wayne / Westland yearbook, or explore the natural and cultural origins of Westland. The museum is open most Saturdays 1-4 (closed temporarily due to covid-19) and is ran by the Westland Historical Commission / Society. They give awesome tours of the park and are very knowledgeable about the city's history. Their archives are located in the office which is a great source of information that they are happy to share with you!
