if I could rate lower I would. this place has zero privacy when it comes to patient doctor information. they don't treat the animals well and they will talk badly about you to each other when they don't think you can hear them they aren't good with animals at all and act as if every animal is an inconvenience highly recommend NOT to bring them your pets!!! all i can really say is to not come here to put your companion to rest. i came in with my mother in-law and had the worst experience, my mother in-law was distraught that her kitty cat was passing away. the people here are not kind, they are inconsiderate. there was no support from any of the staff, reception was exceptionally rude and, like i said, inconsiderate. the vet would not speak to either of us, until she told my mother in law to "stop crying" very condescendingly. she has every right to be upset, as would anybody if their 17 year old kitty passed away in a violent way the way she did. they rushed the process, we stayed there for about 20 minutes before they told us to move along. our kitty cat was elderly, and needed to be put to rest. instead the process was rushed and she ended up vomiting violently before passing. i wouldn't say that's a peaceful way to go. you guys were terrible, im in school for veterinary care and this was a perfect example on to NOT run a successful clinic read more

I had two unfortunate experiences with Nansemond Vet. My dog gave birth and one of the puppies was gasping for breath. I called Nansemond Vet 10 mins before closing and explained my puppy needed oxygen. The receptionist told me I would need to go see the emergency vet which is 30-40 mins away. I explained there was no time because the puppy was having difficulty breathing and reluctantly they told me to come in. They gave oxygen to the puppy and luckily the puppy survived. They charged me with an additional fee for keeping them 5 minutes past closing. I was dissapointed to see that my trusted vet was unconcerned with my gasping puppy and without me being persistent who knows what may have happened. Same litter and a week later another puppy had partially suffocated in the whelping box. I called the vet for oxygen and was told I needed to come in for an exam. Arriving within 5 mins, Dr. Fleck took the puppy to the exam room and said the puppy was breathing fine and that she would not give oxygen to the puppy as requested. An exam fee was charged and I was sent home. I took my puppy home and she died 10 mins later. I don't understand why something so simply as oxygen could not be given to the puppy at my request especially given the nature for the visit. Needless to say I called to complain and the owner Dr. Cochran called me back and offered me an apology. This does not and will not bring my puppy back and it does not offer me peace of mind knowing we did not give oxygen to the puppy while in their care. I just cannot bring anymore puppies to the practice after that incident and neither of my dogs will be coming here again. The response from the vets at Nansemond vet during my emergencies and lack of responding to my request may have caused this puppy to die before it's time. This is not a chance I am willing to take again. read more

However, I have been very pleased with the kind & personal service by most of the members of the front desk staff & by all of the vets & techs. Let me start by saying I had not had any issues before this visit, but this time was extremely different. First, I was not informed that having my dogs given their supplements would incur an additional charge. They are merely supplements and did not HAVE to be given while they stayed at the kennel, so I would have 100% suspended giving them the supplements vice paying an extra $100 for them to get one supplement a day. Second, I was called about a couple little scabs on my dog's head. That was the extent of the description and information about the scabs. This was on their 7th day at the kennel. The person who called asked if I wanted the doctor to look at the scabs after saying they did not know if my dog came in with the scabs or not. I assured him many times on the phone that the scabs were not there when I dropped him off. This also made me wonder what kind of daily checks they run if they do not notice "scabs" on a dog's head at check in. I told him that I did not want to pay for a doctor visit since it sounded like the scabs were already healing. He said he understood that and they would let me know if the scabs got any worse and required a doc visit. He also said they made sure to call right away to let me know just in case. Fast forward to pick up day and I was beyond shocked at the damage to my dog's head. These so called scabs looked like ditches had been dug on my dog's head and they were huge! I asked to speak to someone about it immediately and they gave me the kennel master, who was the one that called me while I was overseas. he again claimed they did not know if the scabs were there when I brought my dog in and I again assured him they were not. He claimed they did not know how they got there, but then later said my dog was rubbing his head against the chain link fence. Something he has NEVER done before at any vet or kennel, or anywhere for that matter. Then he brought up how I could have had the doc look at and I reminded him that I thought it was not right to charge me for a doctor visit when the damage happened on their watch and he claimed he never said there would be a charge. I quoted our entire exchange on the subject from our phone call to him and he merely said, oh my bad, I never intended for you to be charged for that. I clearly mentioned not wanting to pay over the phone and he absolutely acknowledged and said he understood, never did he say there would be no charge. Next, I found out that the scabs were noticed on day 2 of my dog's stay, and they called me about it on day 7. So the "we called as soon as we noticed it" was another blatant lie. Then I noticed a healing wound on my dog's nose and when I asked about that they said he was trying to bury his food. I asked where he was burying his food and he said under his blanket. Again, my dog has NEVER tried to bury his food anywhere. My dog is also a Rottweiler, so it is not like he is a little dog afraid of his own shadow. Finally he asked if I wasted a doctor to look at; I asked how long it would take and he said he could have a doc in there in 5 to 10 minutes. I took my dog outside to go pottie and when we returned all of a sudden he noticed a note in the chart that said a doc did look at him. I found this odd since he was always looking at the chart and did not notice that before. At this point I was still livid so I just left. The kennel master said he would call Monday to check on my dog. no call on Monday, but he did try Tuesday during my work hours when I am unable to take calls on my cell (as I told him). My dog's "scabs" are starting to heal, but my dog is not the same now. He seems depressed and scared. My dog was always wanting to play and was very active. After this trip he is depressed and not playful like he used to be. Something happened during this visit that no one is telling me about. Be very cautious if you board your animals here. read more

She gives you various options to try in non- emergency cases, instead of just trying to take your money. I've boarded my cat, and two dogs, who received great care. Clinic is clean, doctors and vet techs are absolutely fantastic. Nice, understanding, give a genuine vibe of caring. Our pets are part of our family and we give them only the best, no matter the cost (which is fair here). We have boarded and been able to check in on them with phone calls. We've experienced the agony of putting one of our dogs down after a lengthy bout with cancer. They were very thorough with the care and compassionate in the end. We received a one year anniversary memorial card which was very nice. The only reservation is the front office and asking around comparing notes we've all come up with there is only 1 out of 4 that is NICE. The others are abrupt and act as though you're bothering them. They will give yes -no answers instead of offering, say, other appt times. If the care wasn't worth it, I'd be put off and in fact a few people I know have gone elsewhere because they figure they represent the care quality. And you have to be dilligent in YOUR record keeping, because they (Front Desk) often have different information between the computer and hard records. My dogs get reminders for shots they've had and I'm told they need something when in fact it's an error on their part. If it were a one time ooops I wouldn't mention, but it's ongoing and I'm not the only one. My favorite doctor is Doc Kessler. He is just so hands on and genuinely concerned while being able to calm you. I feel secure my animal is getting the best. He tells you what he thinks, the possiblities, and options. DVM Jennifer Cochran is very sweet my only problem is you almost have to pull the straight answer out of her. I would like her to bottom line it and give you options more directly. I took my new puppy here after reading the great reviews on here. I was really not impressed. Despite no one being in there waiting besides me, my appointment was 20 minutes late, and the people at the front, while nice, didn't even acknowledge me because they were bullshitting with another client that gave them a bottle of wine... (WTF?). Got in and had her seen, the vet was nice enough, until I mentioned we planned on crate training the dog. I could tell immediately by the look on her face that she disagreed with crate training and was cold to me after that. I understand there are philosophical differences, but I've been a dog owner my whole life, and that's what we find works best. I mean, even the dog trainer I take her to for puppy kindergarten recommends crate training. I definitely did not come back after that. read more

My boyfriend and I adopted a puppy dachshund, Elvis and today was our first veterinary appointment. Being a nervous first-time Mommy Nansemond Vet Clinic wasabsolutely wonderful, to say the least. I am so impressed by how genuine the staff was in their care for the animals they treat and how patient and informative they were to all of my questions. This was our first of many appointments, so we're building our relationship but I'm very happy so far! I was so pleased, it was a Saturday and my Emotional Support Dog was injuried by what we think was a part of the fence. I am not from the area originally and had a little trouble finding the clinic, but when I did it was amazingly clean, staff was especially friendly, and yes though the office had closed, due to my phone calls, they all waited for my to arrive. The technician, and Vet was on their "A" game, I was so pleased with the carring way the made Shadow so welcome and apart of the family.. I felt the warmth as we sat together on the floor as a team, to meet my four legged family members needs... The condition was not emergant just urgent. the Vet and staff at this clinic can handle any situation, and if they could not they would tell you in a most professional way... We have been long time lab owners who have always used Nansemond Vet Clinic from puppydom to the end.Our favorite vet has been Dr Woody Kessler and a newer Dr "T"(only because we can't pronounce her long name).We really like Cris-vet tech.They never treated our dogs like humans but rather pets but that is by choice.We are more about quality of life rather than longevity of our pets.They took care of Duchess ,Duke, and now Oliver the surviving cat with empathy and professionalism and we are forever grateful for everything!They never turned us away even on short notice if our pets were and are sick and in need of urgent care.Sometimes they even saw the dogs a little after hours since we both work full time.They always were there for us so they get 5 stars from me.Med prices are a little steep .Still not sure about boarding.We were to board the cat over the Fourth of July and were not informed that the clinic had closed early that day.Thank goodness for our great neighbors!!!!We'll try it again though.Anyway, very compassionate when it was time for the dogs to go over the Bridge.At a time when I felt it was time to put our last dog Duke down due to pain issues,Dr Kessler said,"Let's try one more thing" and gave us one more year of his company with better pain management meds !What an honor to share more time with him!After,they always left me have a final time with the dogs to say a final goodbye!Both were cremated at Baker Funeral Home .Thank You Dr Kessler! First time we took our dog we watched all others that came after us go in while we just waited. Finally when all others were done the Vet came in and told us that there was a mix up with their front desk and she did not know we were waiting. On our way out I mentioned this to the front desk but no apology was given. Few months later when we asked for our dogs Rx to be given to the pet pharmacy of our choice we were told that their vets don't fax Rx. We asked if they had a bad experience with the pet pharmacy we gave them but they did not. We were told that they do fax Rx to the pet pharmacy they have on their website. Price was a lot higher with that pet pharmacy and the discount code we were given did not work. I finally asked them to mail me the hard copy of the Rx to my home and they said they would. A week later no Rx had come. When we called the front desk the same person who we had talked to told us that that it was mailed on Friday. I asked her why it has taken four days to mail it out but she told us that she had to wait for the vet to sign it and again no sorry. read more
