It often seems like life is just one long series of bad decisions or, at the very least, episodes of wasted time until you die or some crisis stirs you to action. You know what I mean. But every now and then you do something that makes you think, "hey, maybe I have what it takes to make it in this world." One of those decisions that is so good that it gives you the confidence to go on making decisions all over the place, in contexts you never even thought about - the grocery aisle, the ballot box, the online shopping cart, the airport. That's what it was like when I decided to go make some pottery with Bailey. There is literally no better choice you can make for your mental and physical health or your long-term solvency as a human being. I'll say a few words about the pottery but more important now is that after that experience, my skin took on a healthy glow and more than one person told me I had a "pep in my step." My performance at work and my stand-up paddle boarding group improved, I became a better son, and my friends told me I was a better listener. For various reasons that I have pored over with the same diligence and attentiveness as a biblical scholar, I can tell you that this was all because of my pottery class with Bailey at Nashville pottery. I have only encountered people like Bailey a few times in my life. Once was on an island in Borneo but all the other ones were in literature. He is a superlative human being. Just meeting him justified the class price so getting a lesson and a piece of pottery at the end feels like extra. When he speaks, it is as though the knowledge flows directly into your amygdala and motor cortex, so that you feel like you have been throwing clay for decades. I remember thinking that it was a good thing he wasn't teaching jeet kun do, or else Nashville would fill up with deadly fighters in a matter of days. Full disclosure: I have known Bailey for years, but since starting Nashville Pottery its like a new being has emerged from a 6-and-a-half-foot long cocoon. I barely recognize this guru of clay. As for the class, I recommend bringing a recorder so that you can listen to these words of wisdom for the rest of your life. I listen to them when I am commuting to work but I also turn to them when I am dealing with stress, starting a new project, or having a confrontation with my partner. Also, wear a cheap shirt as the revelatory nature of the experience might cause you to tear your clothes off, spread clay all over yourself, and run out into the street to share your new and profound universal insights. No matter what you make you will cherish it. I made a mug. It made my drinks so special I became consumed with a fear that I might break the mug and never be able to use it again, so I use it as a pot for basil now. I can plant a new seed in it and get a full plant in three to five days. read more

We had the BEST time here! My husband and I signed up for an intro to pottery class while visiting from out of town, and it ended up being the highlight of our trip. Neither of us had touched a pottery wheel before, but Garrison, our instructor, made the whole process approachable and so much fun. Nashville Pottery passes the vibe check! They use quality materials that allow me to make pieces that will last, even if I'm not very good at making pottery yet. And the experienced instructors are really helpful and can give guidance for any skill level.
