There aren't enough stars to rate Nate and Nate's. He is very knowledgeable, very helpful, very talented, and very generous with his time and advice. We have a 12-year-old Prius that needed a new catalytic converter because someone felt they needed ours more than we did. Our insurance covered most of the cost of replacement, and Nate did all of the negotiations with them. We filed a claim, and Nate did the rest: discussions about cost, what exactly needed replacement, etc. Next thing we knew, our Prius was back on the road, and passed its smog test, no worries! We will be bringing all two of our Toyotas to Nate from now on. Top-notch, amazing, responsive, excellent -- all of these adjectives apply to Nate, and his business. Hey all. I came to Nates by way of a fellow prius owner. My 2015 prius has almost 99,000 miles on it. I have always taken my prius to the dealership where I bought the car, mostly because I didn't know what else to do. Then at my 96,000 mile service, I had a "service specialist" hit me with a $3,000 repair bill. He said the list consisted of all the maintenance that I was behind on and that it could be very dangerous for my car to not get the services immediately. I asked for a print out of the list and told him it was because I had to knock one repair out at a time. But the truth is I wanted a second opinion from my mobile mechanic. Turns out that out of the 6 repairs listed only one was due relative to my miles, the break fluid needed to be changed. And my guy did it for $120. The dealership wanted $345.(Toyota one of Oakland if you want to avoid these guys). So I took my list to Nate's garage and also asked him what was due. He verified that most if not all were due at 120,000 miles. Not passed due like the service specialist had told me. Honesty is all I want from my mechanic. But then also saving me money and advising me on the care of my 34,000 car is also amazing. I'm now on my second oil change with Nate and ill be bringing all my repairs to him. read more

I came to Nate's after Toyota quoted me about $800 to replace an inverter water pump and the drive belt on my 2004 Prius. I called Nate who quoted me around $300 for the inverter water pump and about $60 for the belt. This quote was consistent with a competitor garage. I brought my car to Nate's today around 12. He checked it out and informed me that the water pump was the only thing he recommended replacing immediately and the belt could wait a few more months. The work was done by 3:30 and I was charged for the quoted price. I really appreciated Nate's honesty and transparency. I will definitely be coming back here for my hybrid maintenance! read more

I ended up here with my newly, Craigslist-acquired 2002 Prius, after a personal recommendation and checking the good Yelp reviews. I find Nate's garage to be trustworthy and competent. Nate answered all questions professionally, made some recommendations for maintenance, and there were no shady up-sell attempts. I like that Nate knows Priuses so well that he is able to anticipate weak points which might save you big trouble down the road. This kind of preventive approach makes sense. This shop does not try to charge funny labor costs for tiny jobs like changing an air filter or such. I surely will be back here with my service and maintenance needs. read more

I brought my car to Nate's green garage with two problems. The first time I was there he supposedly fixed the car, but 10 days later one of the problems came back. Two weeks after the second time he supposedly fixed that problem, and $200 later, both problems were back!! I scheduled a third appointment only to find out that Nathan expects me to pay him another $85 only to re-examine the car, taking no responsibility for the unsuccessful repairs he had previously done. Mr. Nate is the Sherlock Holmes of the hybrid automotive industry. The first time I called him over the phone he asked me a series of seemingly innocuous questions regarding my car and came to a mysterious, yet laser-accurate analysis within a matter of minutes. Of course, per his modest and pragmatic nature he mentioned that he couldn't be absolutely sure of the issue without seeing the car in person, but he ended up being absolutely correct. Three consultations and two appointments later, this dude as sharp as ever, and seemingly un-stumpable. I'm continually impressed by his wealth of knowledge surrounding hybrid cars on a make-by-make, and sometimes even model-by-model basis, and immensely grateful that he's consistently willing to take the time to talk things out with me on a pre-diagnostic call for free. His prices are more than fair, and he stands by his work. I'm cheap as hell, and I'm always satisfied. You just can't beat his level of knowledge and skill at this or any price. Nate specializes in turning regular cars j to electric cars. But he also does standard automotive work. Don't let his age or clean demeanor fool you. He knows more about cars, and every specific make and model, than any other grease monkey I've ever encountered. Even while I'm sitting here writing this some elderly gentleman walked in, complaining of his seatbelt. Nate took a look, took some detail, called around and told the gentleman his best option is to buy one from the dealer. But he knows the dealer will charge him to install it. So if he brings the belt back here he'll install it for him at no charge. One step even further Nate fixed a few things under my hood just cuz they needed doing, at no charge. These guys are great mechanics... I actually *trust* them. I know, I know, they're mechanics! Mechanics overcharge! They do unnecessary work! Well, not here. They're always fair and always fast. I brought my Honda in for what I thought was a front axle replacement. They looked it over and couldn't find anything wrong with it. They called me to find out exactly what the car had been doing, then looked again. Still nothing. After spending an hour on this they didn't even charge me! Gotta love that. I've been going to these guys for years at HUTCHISON ELECTRIC before they made the switch over to Berkeley. THIS GUY. I haven't even met him in person yet, but I am such a fan. Called to get a quote on a repair for my Prius, which I'd been told was expensive and urgent by several other garages. Nate was the only technician to tell me that the part was in fact under an extended warranty by Toyota. He gave me the technical info I could go to them with, and saved me several hundred dollars by sending me to the dealership instead of doing the replacement himself.....kind of unheard of these days, since it's so much easier to make a quick buck, but Nate completely understands that by respecting people, you create a loyalty that will keep them coming back. I came to Nathan after my beloved Toyota Tacoma catastrophically bit the dust on New Year's Day. And I'm so glad I did! My little truck needed a whole new engine and Nathan was incredibly patient and informative in explaining what was going on and helping me decide whether to repair or replace my truck, a decision that took me a solid week to make. I felt that he really listened to all my questions and concerns, so when I decided to go for the big fix I felt super confident with my decision. Based on other Yelp review's I took my 2000 Acura to Nate's for inspection (to double check the dealership's inspection) and repair. They offer great customer service and don't push repair jobs on you that don't need to be done immediately. Nate found obvious issue that the Acura dealership missed, and also found that some major work that the dealership recommended wasn't necessary (at least not for another 20K miles), so he saved me lots of money overall. They seemed very knowledgable and honest and they are a local family-owned business. I will continue to take my car there and recommend other's do too. read more

Nate was a nice dude and I didn't feel like I was being cheated or taken advantage of at all. HE explained what was going on with my truck really well and it was cool chatting with him for a minute about trucks in general. I got the sense it was more than just business for him, which always makes the experience much better. As far as my truck goes, it's running great now! I was worried that I was going to have to say goodbye to my awesome 91 pickup, but luckily he said it was relatively easy fix and seemed to do a great job at a fair price. Best place. I have a 1996 Honda and I had some oil leaks in my driveway so I was worried and my dad recommend this place. Nate was totally professional and although I didn't know what was going on with my car he explained it and broke it down for me since I couldn't pay for a whole new replaced pump and gasket and pretty much an engine. While I live around the corner from one of my favorite shops with long-time terrific service, their estimate on work I needed done on a used 1997 Toyota Camry (received in 2008) after 7 years of my driving it without any servicing needed except for oil changes, was just too high -- higher than average rates on the Net by quite a bit. ... I decided to try Nate's Green Garage after reading Yelp reviews, and his estimates for the work recommended to keep the car in good shape was HALF the estimated cost of my regular shop while using Toyota parts. Nate explained all the costs, what he would use, what work was more urgent than others, and I just liked the way he handled everything. ... I had all the work done that had been also recommended by the other shop, and this was over two years ago. The car has been humming along since then, but I'll bring it in soon for a checkup. This guy is kinda awesome. Nate is knowledgable and friendly with great customer service. Took my saturn hybrid in for service. Unfortunately, Saturn is not a very sophisticated hybrid and very few are trained to service the vehicle so I ended up just going back to the dealer. But Nate was good assistance and tried to help where he could..even constructed (for free) a hose extension cause he noticed it was damaged. read more
