I left lunch hungry and with little time to spare before tarpon springs closed its businesses for the night. there were several bakeries on the area's main drag, which were (literally) lined up out the door. while the goods inside looked tasty from the outside, lunch now had me all the wiser. a long line and an appealing window display offered no insight on the taste of the goods inside. I found national bakery nestled on a little side road. there was no line, no frills. when you step inside, though, you'll be greeted by a baker who has been serving fantastic baked goods with superior customer service at incredibly fair prices -for decades. the woman who helped us was SO incredibly friendly. she stayed open late just to answer our questions about the area -after having already served us some of the most delicious baked goods I've ever had. I'd recommend going for the goodies, the friendly conversation, and old world atmosphere. skip the lines and overpriced, overhyped "show" goods.... spend your money and time on food you won't forget. read more

Stopped in for some baklava and the woman behind the counter gave us a Lil history lesson /tour of the bakery with all the old machinery and tables used since the beginning! We didnt mind a short wait (Jan 2026), because the longer we stood there, the more those intoxicating toasty aromas soaked into us! I only mention this place because of all the great places i've found via Yelp. You will love it! But i wont tell you my favorite fresh baked sweets, lest National Bakery run out before i get there :-) By the way, park carefully. There is little street parking near here. And nearby stores and restaurants are serious that parking is only for their patrons, which seems fair. read more

I've been here twice now and both times the same thing happened. I went in speaking English and pronounced Tyropita as a Greek and both times the person working there switched to Greek immediately. Both times the woman working there (different people both times) was super friendly and helpful. Last time I ordered a canister of Greek Nescafé and a tyropita, this time just a tyropita. Absolutely authentic and delicious! Sitting right outside the store were 4-5 older Greek men speaking in Greek, and there were several cats close by. A large population of Greek immigrants have called Tarpon Springs home for over 100 years. And throughout that time stands National Bakery, a family-owned and operated bakery for those same 100 years. The table you see in the video was made in 1924 and has been crafting classic Greek pastries ever since. The National Bakery is tucked away on Athens St., away from the chaos of Dodecanese Blvd. We were wandering around and came upon this great little mom & pop shop on our way out of the downtown area and are glad we did. We saw that The National Bakery is a local favorite; the seating area outside was bustling with local Greek gentlemen sharing conversation, baked goods, and coffee. We couldn't pass up the opportunity to see what the bakery had to offer, and with the smell of fresh-baked bread and desserts filling the air, we had no choice to go inside. We ordered two cannoli ($3-each) and a red velvet/Greek yogurt tower ($4). Although the selection here was not near as elaborate as the desserts we found at the Taste of Greece, their variety of goods was fresh and kept traditional to the Greek Heritage. Also, prices at the National Bakery are more reasonable than the Taste of Greece. We shared our desserts with friends, and everyone was impressed with the freshness of the desserts. I enjoyed the red velvet desert and felt that the delicate, airy, fluffiness of the cake and sweet creaminess of the yogurt paired nicely with a hot cup of coffee after dinner. A nice home town bakery! Everything is so fresh! I didn't know what New Year's bread was, and it's a loaf of bread basically round and it has a coin in it and whoever gets the slice with the coin is guaranteed good fortune in the year 2025. I thought this was a great tradition to start. I had the macaroons, and my companion had the wedding cookies. Both of them were the best I've ever had, and it's to my understanding that this bakery provides baked goods for the majority of the Greek restaurants here in our little City Of Tarpon Springs. The service was absolutely wonderful, the lady that helped us was thoughtful and kind and knew exactly what everything in the case was. There was so much to choose from. It was really hard to make a decision in the atmosphere is exactly what you would expect from Tarpon's oldest bakery, and it was really unique . It's off the beaten track and as many years as I've lived here, I never knew it was there until we were just strolling around the downtown area and stumbled upon it. The food was so delicious that I forgot to take pictures, but I certainly wish I would've but I will definitely be back and I believe that I will become quite the regular loyal customer that is truly that good. I ordered the tiramisu, which was 3/5, the cream was too sweet for me and the lady fingers were not very well soaked. I'm picky about my tiramisu though! Love this little gem of a bakery! They open really early, like 6 am, their pastries and bread are so good and the price is just right! We had the spinach and cream cheese pasty just fresh our of the oven, perfect with your morning tea or coffee. The baklavas are so good! It is Easter Sunday so we also bought the sweet easter bread and it did not disappoint! We also had their butter cookies that melts in your mouth when you take a bite! Great service! Authentic Greek pastries. Very good cappuccino. Although the kourrabeides were very flaky, I prefer the recipe I have from my former Greek neighbor as the kourrabeides cookie recipe I have does not fall apart so easily when broken or cut, hence the one star removed. But they are still tasty morsels and wish I could have only removed a half star instead of a full star. This was our first visit to the area and we were looking forward to enjoying authentic Greek food. Given we came through town at 9am, breakfast items were our option. Why did it have to happen this way? I'm referring to the problem of having eyes that are bigger than your stomach. I wasn't looking for a bakery. I was looking for a parking spot ... to then go eat at a Greek restaurant in Tarpon Springs. After I got out of the car (damn was it hot), I saw this sign for a "national bakery." Does this mean it reports to Syntagma Square? For whatever reason, it has this parliamentary sounding name. I gave the place a quick study. Upon seeing a few retired gentlemen at a nearby shop who would have looked just as at home in the "old country," I decided to investigate some more. I went in, the very pleasant lady and I talked for a short while, and I told her I might be back after eating lunch. I did in fact return after lunch. I had to get into my car which I had unknowingly parked on ... drum roll ... Athens Street. How could I avoid going back into the National Bakery? I picked out 3 desserts that I had the lady at the counter put in a to go container. Regular customers were coming in while I was there and were a lot more decisive than I was. Most of them were coming in to pick up bread. The scents in the bakery had reeled in my olfactory nerve. I see some comments about the anise desserts. I saw them, too, but didn't buy any. This is one of those things you either like ... or don't. (My mom made anise cookies and had some liqueurs with anise in them, usually for baking.) However, they had baklava, many other Greek treats, and other desserts that might be broader in scope than just being Greek. The prices were fair and much like those at an ethnic neighborhood bakery. One pays with cash. And, again, the service was very hospitable and good natured. If in Tarpon Springs, wander around some beyond the main touristic area and find some of the businesses off the beaten path and that the locals know about, such as National Bakery. read more

The cutest little bakery tucked away in Tarpon Springs. It's significantly less "touristy" than Hellas and the prices are more affordable as well (with larger portions too!)
