I've been planning this trip for 25 years--a bucket list dream to cruise a convertible from Miami to Key West. Naturally, I trusted National Car Rental to be part of this once-in-a-lifetime experience. What could possibly go wrong? Picked up the car at Miami Airport. Smooth. Drove it straight to Key West Airport. Glorious. Handed it over the same day. The return attendant told me, "Just leave the keys in the car." Sounds like a solid plan for a company that rents hundreds of thousands of vehicles. What could possibly go wrong with that? Took a photo of the car. Took a photo of the spot. Thought I was done. Plot twist: The next day, National channels the energy of an overzealous ex. I get two phone calls, a text, an email, and even a notification in the app, all dramatically declaring that the car is overdue. (Honestly, I haven't been pursued this aggressively since high school.) I call their 800 number. They tell me the car is returned in their system... but, oopsie, the local office and app just haven't caught up. "It'll update soon." Comforting. The following day, Miami calls me again, insisting the car is still out gallivanting around Florida like it's on spring break. I explain (again) what happened. Their theory? The Key West office is "running behind." Ah, yes. The ol' "we're too busy to check if a literal car has been returned" excuse. More calls. Another complaint. A case escalated. Two days later, on June 7th, I finally receive a receipt confirming that the car is no longer missing. No apology. No explanation. No acknowledgment that they could've maybe, I don't know, used GPS to locate their own vehicle? I mean, if Domino's can track my pizza's every move, what's National's excuse? All in all, a magical experience--if your definition of "magic" includes gaslighting, suspense, and mild heart palpitations. I won't be using National again, but I will treasure this experience forever. Just like the time I accidentally signed up for a timeshare presentation in Cancun. read more

Usually renting a car requires standing in a long line for forever, only to end up getting to the front of the line, and being told that the car you reserved a month in advance is no longer reserved and or available. That was NOT my experience here. My experience here was great. They made the process of getting a car extremely easy. Keep up the great work! read more

National is my go-to choice when I need a rental car! I needed a one-way rental to get me from Miami to Fort Lauderdale for a cruise I was going on. This location is located at the rental car center at Miami Airport. It's easy to access via the Skytrain at your terminal. The walk through MIA to the Skytrain takes quite a while, but it's much better than having to leave the airport to jump on a shuttle in my opinion. Once on-site, they do have a good selection of vehicles to choose from. I ended up choosing a GMC Terrain. It was a good vehicle and great on gas. Only took me $8 to fill to full from Miami to Fort Lauderdale, definitely can't beat that! The gentleman at the check-out booth was very friendly, welcoming and helpful. Unsafe Vehicle & No Support I rented a Hyundai Palisade from National at Miami International Airport using the Emerald Aisle. After driving over an hour and a half to the Florida Keys, I discovered the passenger side mirror was taped onto the vehicle with black duct tape. This is not only unacceptable, it's unsafe. The heat of South Florida caused the tape to melt, and the mirror is now falling off. This is a serious safety hazard. The rental agreement emailed to me after checkout vaguely noted "passenger side damage"--but nothing was mentioned at checkout. Regardless, a mirror held on by duct tape should NEVER be sent to the aisle for customer rental. I contacted National's customer service: They told me to call roadside assistance. Roadside said they could only tow the car, and I'd have to get back to Miami to get a new one. I asked for a car swap. They said only the Miami location could do that. I called the Miami location twice during business hours--no one answered, and there's no voicemail. I called customer service again, and they said they don't have the authority to move cars. I asked to escalate. A supervisor claimed they would escalate internally and have someone call me back. No one has followed up. So I am stuck with an unsafe vehicle, far from the rental center, with no help from any level of National support. This experience is deeply disappointing and dangerous. I expect a full resolution and formal response. Renting out a vehicle with a taped-on mirror is negligent. read more

We travelled through Miami, and schedule the flights to allow an overnight, so we could explore, which requires a vehicle. We reserved the Emerald Aisle. - - - The MIA location & "our" Jeep Gladiator - - - The rental car facility requires a bit of a walk in the terminal (welcomed after sitting on the plan), then a train ride from the airport to the rental car garage shared by all the rental companies. As with most National locations, the Premier cars are right in front, and they had a Lamborghini, but the four of us wouldn't fit. ; ) This Emerald Aisle included a few vehicles we hadn't driven before, including a Jeep Gladiator, "the Jeep pickup truck." The four suitcases fit nicely in the truck bed, and we all fit nicely in the interior. The interior is all-Jeep... but after a couple minutes we figured out the A/C and window buttons and found the USB power plugs. The Jeep was nice for our sightseeing. - - - The Return - - - There are a couple gas stations within a couple blocks of the MIA airport, so the fillip was easy. The signs are decent enough to find the garage. The National - MIA team was friendly and welcoming and handed me the receipt as I was just pickup my backpack out of the back seat... and I was then quickly off to catch up with the others inside the airport. I did not have a very positive experience renting a vehicle from National Rent a Car located at the MIA rental car center. The journey from Miami International Airport to the rental car center is a long journey from the airport to the rental car center. Writing this review, I actually looked up the distance: 1.6 miles. Who thought it was a great idea to have a rental car location for a major airport be built 1.6 miles away?!?!? Even getting to the MIA mover its a journey, requiring a lot of walking that would be easier if their moving walkways were all working, which they were not. Then after the ride on the mover, more walking and stairs. My mother who was on the flight with me, could not make this journey. She requires wheelchair assistance to get from one part of the airport to another. I had to leave her back at the airport with our bags to get the car... requiring me to drive back to the airport to pick this all up. I went with National, my mother had an account with them and we booked a car through them. Unfortunately, because she wasn't here, I had to create my own account and rebook under me. So in other words, we couldnt get another vehicle to her account and get closer to a free rental because she was not here. Well why isn't your location easier to reach for people with mobility issues?!?!? Getting out of this place is a nightmare, or getting back in and dropping the car when we are done. Nothing is clearly marked, its a labyrinth in here. Oh did I mention that I got a smaller car than what I paid for? Oh yeah and the attendant just shrugged her shoulders when I complained. We originally had two bookings with you. We were staying in Miami for two days, then doing a seven day cruise then another 3 days in Miami Beach. I decided driving out of the facility that I would use the car for the two days in Miami, but made sure we canceled our 2nd reservation for our time in Miami Beach. When you end up wanting to buy the same car that you just rented, you got a good rental. Price was about half of Budget, less wait time, and the toll-policy was much better. I have been a long and loyal customer (sometimes over 50 night rentals a year) due to business which how I treated at this location made me think twice. Car rental business is generally shady when you chose to work with a smaller companies, however a big companies like Hertz/National service is usually exceptional, not at this Miami Airport Location though. I rented in January for 3 days and returned the car to same location where drop off is at the airports parking lot. My mistake, I walked with the key to my pocket all the way to airport and realized at the check in counter the car key was in my pocket. I went back and drop the key to counter at the airport office. I saw a charge on my credit card $550CAD one month after the rental for lost key. I called their +1 844-887-8399 number 4 times and every time I was told someone from the Miami office will call me back. No one has ever called me back so far and I can not get a hold of Miami airport locations phone number to speak with directly at the manager. I live in Canada and not sure what I can do at this point. One incident is enough to change long term loyal customers habits to switch busines. read more

He seemed majorly inconvenienced by having to do his job and then rudely pointed to the direction I needed to go without saying any words. Checkout was easy, you just take your DL and card to the gate and they let you out. No need to wait in line, no need to fill out paperwork, you just get in whatever car you want and go. Had reserved at budget rent a car but the lines were soo long and understaffed there are about 15 computers so staff could check people in only 3 were filled, would have taken us over 2 hours to get car. So I looked across the hallways and national had maybe 2 people. I walk over there they give me a good deal just 10 dollars more a day than budget so totally worth the convenience. Customer service at the counter was good but the car we chose was filthy (couldn't really tell from the parking structure until we left). Interior was clean but the exterior had all sorts of smudges and dirt spots. The passenger side window was smudged and I could not take it off so will have to take it to a car wash at some point today to make it presentable. Car also has 57k miles and a 2020. With the abundance of new rental vehicles available from my recent travels this is still shocking that they'd keep a rental around this long. read more

National hooked me up big time. I rented a premium car because I needed room to drive around multiple passengers on a recent trip to the Keys. When I arrived they had almost no cars. There were a few big SUV's like the Infinity QX 80, but I had already said I didn't want an SUV. While waiting for a premium car to become available the manager showed up and offered me a luxury upgrade. They gave me a BMW 740i. As Jeremy Clarkson once said, "what a machine". Loaded with technology and surprisingly fuel efficient as it's a partial hybrid with start stop technology. It has an eco pro mode which I used most of the time. It's a little intimidating because it is large. It was a little confusing to learn all the controls as well. I have never been in a more luxurious vehicle and the ride was absolutely amazing. I'm ready to buy one. I found one with similar mileage on Car Gurus for $71,000. Thanks National. read more

I have always used National It's been awesome. This time we rented in Ft Lauderdale and returned in Miami. Besides the high return rate for dropping off in another location - we did not do a walk around before leaving. When we returned after just parking it at my uncle's house, they said it was damaged. We did not damage the car. Two gentleman behind me, rented in Orlando, returned to Miami and also were told they damaged the car. We now have to wait to be contacted by administration with a video of the car leaving Ft Lauderdale. Update - National Took responsibility for the damage in a letter dated - 2/21. I called multiple times to get reimbursed the $500 that they took day of. They stated they called the location to get them to reimburse me but there was no response she. After 5 calls they are finally sending a check that will take another 7-10 days. The actual location never responded. read more

Solid rental outlet at Miami International Airport. We rented a compact car here for a long weekend in the Keys. Getting from our flight to the location is a fairly long-winded process depending upon where you land. We probably walked over half a mile from our plane to the train terminal that takes you to the rental car center. However, this is more of an indictment of the MIA layout than of National itself. Once we arrived at the National counter, customer service was great. We are Emerald members, which normally means you don't have to stop at the counter to check in. However, we wanted to add an additional driver and weren't sure if that was possible at the exit gate. Answer: It is possible, no need to stop at the counter first. Escalators or elevators take you to the ground floor where the National cars are located and you can just grab and go. One major complaint is that there were not enough manned agents at the exit gates and they weren't processing customers quickly enough. We probably waited 20 minutes in our car to exit. read more

I flew into Miami International Airport on a Friday morning and made my way to the Car Rental area. Right as I walked out of the sliding glass doors to the parking garage multiple employees were there to ask if I needed any help. Very friendly and nice. I made my way to the executive elite area and I was kind of bummed about the selection.. the selection in that area was basically the same as the emerald selection. I picked a car and went on my way. The line to get out of the parking garage was super long but moved extremely fast. The next morning I got an email from National asking about my experience with that location. I responded to the email and said everyone was nice but I was bummed at the car selection. The manager Rene responded right away and told me to come in and ask for him and he would swap me out with a vehicle of my choice. I came in that next day during my lunch and met with Rene. Rene was super nice and helpful and put me the vehicle of my choice. I can't say enough about the customer service at this location, they really went above and beyond to take care of me and for that I'm truly grateful. Highly Recommended Thanks Rene! read more

As an Emerald member, this location provided a true Emerald experience. I arrived late on the weekend of the Miami Formula 1 Grand Prix to find the selection decimated. There were no vehicles in the Emerald area, the first attended arrived in a Ford F150 and I went to talk with him. He apologized for the lack of selection, and asked what I wanted. We are staying in a resort that covers a large area, so I asked for a convertible. He found me a Mustang in less than two minutes, and set us up for a great time. I know that experiences can vary, and there are plenty of mixed reviews, but this attendant went above and beyond to give us a good experience. Emailed them as requested-they used a standard copy and paste customer service response and cited their policy which clearly demonstrated I was right but then continued to "clarify" that their own policy and terms and conditions didn't actually mean what was written and meant something completely different. Long story short, they couldn't get around the fact that they violated their own terms and conditions so they stopped responding. At this point my family will be filing legal action against them. Not to mention that my 5 year old son is now afraid of airports and travel because of how rude the staff is here and how they treated us. read more

Took forever to find the place with poor signage in the airport. Rented a convertible had to explain that too them. The guy kind of wandered around for a minute and then told us to take the one right in front of us. It looked fine in the dimly lit parking garage but, when we got it in the light of day it was clear it had never been cleaned from the prior rental - sand everywhere, smudgy finger prints on where you grab the door to close it, and food spill dried onto the console. Even broken parts in the rear seat. This location has horrible customer service. Check and double check your rental before accepting it. And- don't even get me started about trying to switch the rental to a different credit card (business to personal) - you'd think I asked them to split an atom! read more

Not only is it easy to get your car because you simply walk up to a car, any car and go, but I got a Challenger for no additional cost. I used to use Enterprise very frequently and their pick-up service was often very helpful, but there was still paperwork to do before you got the car. I often rent cars when traveling for work and decided to try National at the Miami Airport location. What really set it apart from the other rental agencies was the price. - $10 less each day vs the competition. Being an emerald member, I was able to skip the check in counter and go right to garage to pick up my car. Super convenient! I was told I could also just pick up any car within a certain row. I opted for a Nissan Ultima as a compact car- was pleasantly surprised it was an option. The car was clean and ready to go. Smooth ride for the entire week, easy car return, and the customer experience overall was fantastic. Every question I had was answered and everyone was very friendly. Chose our ride, attendant was a nice guy, helped load the luggage (gave us bottled water). Returned to RSW quick and easy, printed out the receipt on the spot. Not only was the ONE employee out on the lot rude (he was talking on his head piece while he had 3 people waiting and didn't seem to try and rush at all) but they had no regular cars, only SUVs/vans. What's the point if reserving a class type and also being an Executive Elite member if you can't even choose a car? The guy had plenty if cars that needed to be cleaned and rather offer to clean them he ignored every question and kept pointing to an SUV. I'm sorry I don't want to drive an SUV.... Horrible experience. Will never book with Priceline nor National in my life. Made a reservation 2 weeks ahead for my car and when I get there, there's no one there to help me out with the car. Only a sign that says "no cars available sorry for the inconvenience" I call National customer service and they were not able to help me either. They could not get a hold of their own company workers! Needless to say I needed a car and had to go to enterprise where I ended up paying double what I had paid originally with no compensation. This review lost stars primarily as a result of the lackluster way in which this location has handled locating a lost item. I believe I left my personal car keys in my rental vehicle. I emailed the location asking them to check as I live in LA and can't do it myself. That email was sent 4/13/16 at 2:46AM. It's now 4/14/16 6:23AM and not a word from National beyond sending me a generic email acknowledging receipt of my email. I'm willing to bet the car has already been rented to someone else. Not only has no one returned my email but I can't reach a human being on the lost-and-found line when I call them. Just rings and rings and rings. Pretty pathetic service all around at this location. I also had a hard time with the guy at the booth as i went to exit the National area. Not friendly and rather snappy when I took too long getting my ID to him. read more

Our flight to Charlotte to Savannah was overbooked and we had no other choice but to grab a rental and drive home. There were several options at the airport but had no availability or was just too pricey for us but luckily National was able to help us. After walking around and comparing prices we found National to be a tad cheaper and there was no wait in line business. We went to the lower level and it was there that we met "Numa" (National agent). He greeted us with two bottles of water and gave us the option to pick any car we wanted. I have been a National Emerald Elite member for 4 years. A few days ago I had the WORST experience ever at the Miami airport location. The manager name Norman belittled me, disrespected me, never bothered looking at my transaction receipts, instead he basically accused me of "stealing" a rental when I told him there was a payment attempt on my credit card for 700$ when I hadn't rent a car since the pandemic started in March. I had a rental with them end of may, after returning the car I paid at the counter with my debit card then a few hours later my credit card got charged again. Norman claimed that wasn't true in a voicemail he left me, so I went in to the location next day and he told me the second charge was refunded to me days ago (after claiming I wasn't charged twice) BUT corporate confirmed he actually refunded me when I was standing in front of him while he was lying to me. And I can't say 100% for sure but I'm 99% sure he called me the B word when I was walking out. I walked out of that location shaking and crying because I was so angry with the way I was treated. On 5 different occasions the MIAMI AIRPORT location has overcharged or charged me twice, or charged my cards when I haven't rented with them in months. Before the pandemic I used to rent a car at least 20 days out of every month due to work travels. I HAVE NEVER HAD A BAD EXPERIENCE WITH NATIONAL IN THE PAST 4 Years unless it's in MIAMI AIRPORT. I AM DONE RENTING WITH NATIONAL IF THAT MANAGER NORMAN DOESN'T FACE ANY CONSEQUENCES. I HAVE SPENT WAY TOO MUCH MONEY WITH NATIONAL TO BE DISRESPECTED AND ACUSED LIKE A CRIMINAL!!!! I don't even care or want their free days they gave me over this situation, I'm looking into transferring my Emerald membership to another rental company.
