National Car Rental over authorized my card until it declined.
    Jokima H.

On Thursday, May 16th I had a reservation at National Rental Car at the Springfield, MO Airport location. I arrived on time and in minutes the agent had over authorized two of my credit cards until they declined. I was told the rental was $278.70. I gave my Commerce card and it was authorized $278.70 and then the agent attempted to authorize $200 which declined. He told me the card declined and asked if I had another card. I asked again how much was the rental in which he told me a total of $478.70, $278.70 for the rental and then an additional $200 because I am local. So, I offered my Capital One card which he then authorized $200, then $278.70. Then, for some reason, he continued and tried to authorize my card $356, then $478.70. Those amounts declined. Please see the attached bank statement. The agent told me both of my cards declined and he suggested I contact my banks which I did. My Capital One bank representative explained that National had over authorized my card but that the initial two authorizations totaling $478.70 were approved. They even gave me the approval codes which I wrote on a post-it note and tried to give to the agent. It was at this time the National agent informed me they could no longer help me and would not be able to rent me a vehicle. They refused to speak to the Capital One rep.  I thought of going to a different rental car booth or even getting a flight but realized National was still holding over $700 in authorizations. I asked them. No, actually, I begged them to please release the authorizations so that I could make other arrangements. They refused. I sat in a chair at their booth for over three hours begging them to not let me leave without a vehicle or access to my money. They refused to call their tech support or their bank. I cried as they continued to deny me assistance. So, as it stands, I missed my best friend's Mother's funeral and was unable to send flowers in lieu of my presence because all of my money was holding. My friend's Mother fought a long fight with Alzheimer's.  I am both devastated and heartbroken. I have been calling and emailing local, regional, and corporate National representatives however no one has called me nor assisted me. Commerce Bank finally interceded on my behalf and contacted the regional manager Erica Ewing who declined to help but did admit that they did not do business with me and did not need the $278.70 authorization. The Commerce rep was so flabbergasted at National's unwillingness to help that she escalated the problem to the Chief security personnel on duty and they released my funds immediately. This is not the case with Capital One. A Capital One rep tried to contact Erica Ewing and requested that she indicate electronically that the $200 and $278.70 authorizations were not needed. She refused to do so and gave us a number to the National Corporate Credit Card Processing office. They were closed. I left a message and sent an email and no response. Capital One says that they cannot legally release the authorizations without express written consent from the merchant. National has been unwilling to do this.  As of today, $478.70 is still holding on my Capital One card. National Customer Service has told me to wait 1-3 days, 3-5 days, 14 days, and most recently 21 days for my money to be released. Every time I call or get a standard email letter from National Customer Service the wait time varies. I have repeatedly expressed to them that this situation is of their doing and to ask me to wait even one day is unfair. I still need help. I need my money. Thank you for reading my message. Jokima
