First off I was very happy to be able to get a next day appointment to have my foot looked at! The staff was very helpful and even called me in the morning pre-appointment to on board me to the patient portal to fill out all documents ahead of time. The office had clear COVID precautions in place. Dr. Polun took time with me to assess and understand my issue and x-rays were done in the office, which I appreciated. Afterwards, he took extra time to explain to me the possible diagnosis and next steps to take. Complications from Lapiplasty performed by Dr. Polun. 10 months post surgery still experiencing swelling, bruising, pain, poor mobility in the big toe joint (10 degrees only), which makes walking painful. The hardware was removed at Hopkins, which provided some improvement in the area, but has not changed the big toe joint range of motion. Multiple doctors said full recovery from this invasive surgery is 9-12 months and has well known complications not as advertised online and told by Dr. Polun. Several podiatrists said they have seen multiple patients with similar complications from lapiplasty performed by Dr. Polun. Very disappointed. read more

The person who wrote that Dr. Engorn is fantastic is right on the money. Unfortunately, he is no longer with this practice and a recent visit has our family looking for a different option for our foot care. I think everyone is well-meaning, but there is a lack of experience and perspective right now that led to a very real, very large amount of unnecessary stress (the sleepless night kind), time, and, I'm betting, expense to my insurance company. Real time, hands-on mentoring/shadowing from someone more experienced would probably make a world of difference here--and I hope that happens. For now, my best piece of advice is to get a second opinion (right then and there from the more experienced doctor in this office if that's possible and from someone else if not) if anything that leaves your gut unsettled is prescribed to you. read more

Dr. Polun is the bomb! Not only is he a great foot doctor, but he is very personable, funny, and charming--absolutely the best doctor I have ever had. It was by chance that I became Dr. P's patient as I was being treated by a large well-known sports clinic for a recurring issue with my left Achilles tendon. I have been a long distant runner for over 20 years. Even though the clinic diagnosed my problem correctly, the therapy and the solution left a lot to be desired. In fact, they released me to start running again. The clinic prescribed orthotics, but they were unable to make my orthotics because their machine was not working. And they referred me to two doctors, one of which was Dr. Polun, whom I chose because he was closest to my job. On my first visit Dr. Polun immediately recognized that my problem was much greater than the national clinic, and he ordered tests, and ordered me to immediately stop running before I caused a complete rupture of my tendon. When the tests results were in, we planned for surgery to repair my tendon, removal of a broken bone spur, correction of my flat arches, all with the goal to return me to my first love, running! It's been four months since the surgery, and I am finally walking again without help. It's been a hard road for me because I am not used to being inactive, and miss running so much. But Dr. Polun assures me that I will run again shortly, and I am making progress regularly. I am really happy that Dr. Polun was my surgeon, and is my doctor. When I finally am completely healed, I am going to run my next marathon in his honor! Dr. Polun and his staff are professionals, efficient, and very personable and friendly. Dr. Polun is an excellent Podiatrist and performed the "Kidner Procedure" which is surgery for the "Accessory Navicular" on a family member's foot. Surgery, as in "put you out" surgery. It was done at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, MD. He's done hundreds of these (ok I don't know the exact number) but it's a lot. I wanted that, rather than an orthopedic surgeon who has not done as many. No disrespect to either profession. Rather than talk about his skill or even his bedside manner (both excellent) I would rather focus on Dr Polun's positive attitude and his simple love and joy of what he does. He loves what he does. And he loves showing you what he's doing. Had an infection? "Look at how pink and healthy that skin is!" is the response afterwards. When you love what you do and you do it well, then the only infection you need worry about is his positive attitude - that you'll catch. read more

Dr. David Engorn is truly outstanding! I have seen numerous doctors over the years for treatment-resistant foot pain, and Dr. Engorn was the first doctor who ordered a foot MRI. The MRI revealed significant ligament and bone issues that did not show up on past x-rays. As soon as Dr. Engorn got to the root of the problem, he put together a plan for minimally invasive surgery to fix up my foot. I am feeling so much better and am so grateful for Dr. Engorn's knowledge, kindness, and suggestion that we try a different approach to investigate and resolve my pain. read more

In 2015 I had surgery which resulted in an over correction of the fifth toe, floppy toe. I am not happy but consider it a lesson learned.

The beginning of 2016 Dr. Polun helped me with my right foots sesmoid bones, one was fractured the other broken in half with no blood flow to the location of the break. I had two choices that could lead to a pain free life, surgery or amnio fix with laser therapy. I chose the less innvasive procedure, amnio fix, which is an injection that repairs the internal damage. It worked! In 2017 I fractured a left foot sesmoid bone. I had new insurance and Dr. Polun was out of my network but he worked with me to make sure I got the best care possible. I was living in pain every day until I met Dr Polun. I am now almost 100% pain free and grateful for Dr Polun's knowledge and kindeness through my darkest days. read more

Dr. Polun is THE BEST! After seeing three other doctors (an orthopedist and two other podiatrists) Dr. Polun accurately diagnosed my condition (catching things they all missed!) and was the first to recommend and perform a treatment that actually WORKED! Before I saw Dr. Polun I was in so much pain I could barely walk a block down the street, and as an athlete, that was incredibly frustrating. Now, I'm getting back to running, hiking, biking and doing all the things I love. The procedure he recommended made me a little nervous at first, however, he was incredibly patient when answering all my questions and made me feel at ease. He was also SUPER responsive when I called the office: I left a message in the evening and he called me back the next morning before the office opened and patiently and thoroughly answered my list of what must have been 10-15 questions to make sure I was comfortable. He takes his time to make sure you fully understand everything about your diagnosis and the treatments involved. I really like Dr. Polun and all his staff. I've been going there for several years and they are very prompt, polite, and also friendly and fun. He saved the foot of my girlfriend's son who had a MRSA, which was amazing. I haven't had anything so dramatic, but he has treated my heel spurs very successfully allowing me to keep my P/T job as a Yoga Instructor. They have also been excellent when I have brought in my husband who is wheelchair-bound, treating him with compassion and caring without overdoing it or using fake sympathy. Great doc, great staff. My experience with Dr Polun and the staff at National Foot and Ankle has exceeded all of my expectations. I've spent 10-15 years with painful, deformed toes. I can't believe how quickly Dr. Polun turned my situation around. The correction required surgery, which was 100% painless with the use of local anesthesia. The office runs like clockwork, no wait that you typically expect at the doctor' office. The visits were quick and to the point and the surgeries lasted only a few minutes. The doctor and staff were surprisingly friendly and helpful. They provided necessary prescriptions directly to me during my visit, eliminating the need to wait at the pharmacy. On the one occasion in which my medication was not in stock, they had it mailed to me; it arrived in a box at my doorstep within 24 hours. Unfortunately my experience was not as positive as others have reported. I found his office staff to be rude and quite frankly not interested in patients at all.I had a particularly difficult situation with my foot and when I called asking to please see or speak to Dr. Polun because of the pain, I was told there was nothing they could do for me. I would have to wait until my next scheduled appointment. Or go to the emergency room. I had been seeing him for over 4 months at this point so I would have expected a bit more responsiveness/concern. Dr. Polun is very pleasant as others have noted. But I did not find his treatment effective. I even had a special procedure which he assured me was over 80% effective. It was costly, not covered by insurance, painful, and not at all effective.So I suggest patients beware of the false promises and lack of concern by this practice. read more

Bottom Line: Dr. Polun is the right guy to see about foot / ankle injuries. I experienced a debilitating basketball injury that cost me my ability to run, exercise effectively, and just generally maintain balance and stability. It took me a long time to figure out what the problem was: multiple visits to urgent care, a visit with a specialist, an ultrasound, an MRI, and another visit with a specialist. By this point, I had received somewhat confusing, somewhat conflicting advice, and I had also done a lot of research online that left me even more confused and conflicted. Enter Dr. Polun. Dr. Polun clearly understood what the problem was (completely ruptured ligament and tendon) and was able to clearly articulate to me in layman's terms what this meant for me. I was impressed by his knowledge, his expertise, and his professionalism throughout this process - he was committed to helping me understand all my options, the pros / cons of each, and the likelihood of full recovery. We settled on the most aggressive option: surgery to replace the ruptured ligament and tendon. The surgery went brilliantly, and so did the recovery. Dr. Polun was actively engaged post-surgery, even hopping on the phone / exchanging emails in the middle of the night a few times when I had questions about issues in the recovery process. I was very impressed by his commitment to me - I've heard rough stories about other surgeons that disappear post-surgery, but Dr. Polun was wonderful. Recovery went well, the rehabilitation went well, and now I'm running and functioning again. I'm very grateful. He's a witty, friendly, compassionate, skilled man - if you're having problems with your foot and ankle, my advice is to go see Dr. Polun ASAP. He's also got good instincts about March Madness bracket selections. My only regret is that I took so long to find him in the first place. read more

I went to Dr. Polun on the enthusiastic recommendation of friends. I arrived on time for my first appointment, handed in my paperwork and sat down to wait. Thirty minutes after my scheduled appointment time, I asked the receptionist whether I had come at the correct time, thinking she would let me know what was happening. Her answer was, "Yes your appointment was at 2:30." She did not apologize for the wait nor did she bother to let me know how much longer I might expect to wait. At 3:15 I was shown to an examining room, again with no apology for my wait nor with any expectation of how much longer I should have to wait. At 3:20, I got up and left. I never saw the doctor and never received so much as an apology or a call back from the office for my trouble.
