I wish I could rate this company 0 stars or negative ones, or reverse-grant them Adam West-style. They are one of the worst companies I've ever dealt with. For those unfamiliar with National Grid, a little history. It was formed when an ex-member of the Ahnenerbe (Google it) decided to start a utility company. Late one night, in a laboratory deep underground, far from the eyes of other men, he concocted an insane stitched-together horror that combined the junior high locker room bullying arrogance of modern-day vulture capitalism, the labyrinthine twists of a Kafka bureaucracy, and the hopeless, dead-end nihilism of an H.P. Lovecraft tale - with an added dash of Inspector Gadget's random electronic malfunctioning sprinkled in for extra frustration. And lo! the beast moved, and politicians gave it tax breaks, and it oppressed whole communities, like a dragon demanding its yearly sacrifice. Then imagine you offer said sacrifice, only the dragon tells you he can't accept it till after the holidays, by which point he'll already have burned your home down. But he understands your frustration.
1. I received a letter from them back in May telling me I needed to have my gas meter replaced. I set up an appointment, which the Grid repeatedly cancelled/rescheduled, once less than a half hour before the appointment. In September I had to reschedule once because I couldn't get permission from my landlord to access the basement. Had I just brought the guy downstairs I would have violated my lease. A week later I received a threatening letter from them informing me that if I postponed the appointment one more time that they'd take me to court. The letter was whiny, accusing me of repeatedly denying them access to their equipment. I spoke to a few friends of mine who are attorneys, & they all agreed that I can't be sued when I have no legal power to authorize their entry to a part of the house I don't own. NG backed off when I threatened to sue THEM.
2. I tried to check the status of my account last night. I couldn't access anything by phone - their office is perpetually closed for one reason or another - so I tried to access my account online. Despite having registered online years ago, I was forced to register again (this is like the fifth or sixth time I've been required to register to access an account that was opened almost 15 years ago) - only the "personal access code" listed on my bill was invalid. (This was to register an electric account, but the access code was only listed on my gas bill, which makes sense until you realize they studiously separate the two departments so that you cannot use one to gain access to the other.) I kept trying it over & over again until I finally seemed to get through... and I got a "There has been an error - please try your request again later" message.
So I tried making a payment by phone. I got through to the automated service after multiple tries, only my payment got rejected because the system said my phone number didn't match my address (the two were added simultaneously when I opened the account, & worked last month, so this makes no sense) and it said the account number was invalid. Then it gave my bank account as a number I've never used. There were no "return to the main menu" or "try a different payment method" options, so I had to start over again. I kept getting sent in death spirals, unwillingly bouncing from menu to menu until I landed in the Starless Abyss, aka the customer service department afterhours. Which is closed for Christmas (meaning Christmas Eve and Christmas) as of 7 pm on Dec. 23, meaning they're unavailable except for leaks & outages for 60 straight hours.
I finally tried to sneak in by contacting the emergency line. I was flatly told to call back another time & was assured that they weren't closed for 2 1/2 days, and that they'd be open as of 7 am on the 24th. That would be a lie. I called back after 7 and got sucked back into the automated vortex: it just bounced me from one random option to another regardless of what option I said or pressed. I called their emergency line & Calltaker #2 said that Calltaker #1 was a liar.
So here I am, willing AND able to pay my bill, but locked out from doing so because their automated service is broken, their office is closed for 2 days, and their website is a glitch-ridden digital torture chamber. This is the second time in 2 1/2 years this sort of mess has happened. This company should be annihilated & its CEO & shareholders thrown into a pit somewhere. read more
