On a recent Saturday I visited National Lumber in Newton to inquire about replacement TimberTech decking. I was politely directed to the rear of the store where two employees assisted me immediately, listening attentively to my need for two boards and my uncertainty about color and type. I had my contractor's invoice from 2020 which turned out to be for the pressure treated wood for the new deck built then. LP and Izzy together were able to go to my contractor's page, find the specs about the TimberTech used, and refresh my memory about the color. They gave me a sample board and a TimberTech Source Book, encouraging me to call the company about the strange bleached-out stain on my deck. They also quoted me the cost of two replacement boards for my handyman to purchase for the repair. Problem solved. LP and Izzy were friendly, personable and eager to be of help... and at the end of a long Saturday. Most of the help is indifferent; doing you a favor for waiting on you. The prices are high which is fine, saves me a trip to Home Depot, but if you're going grossly overcharge, at least do it with a smile. The cashiers never give you eye contact, they're always having a conversation with someone else. She is patient knows her stuff and has a beautiful ring which she most certainly deserves from her grateful husband. Terrible attitude! Need to buy a sample size paint for touch up. The guy in paint area (white hair, with glasses) told me he would look for the paint for me because only quart size is available. Then he directly made the paint (California paints) without telling me the price and checking with me if it is ok to make the paint. At last, he said the price would be $48. The price for benjamin moore of one quart exterior paint is only $35. I told him that he made the paint without my permission and without informing me the price. I would not buy it. He was angery and slapping the table. I am 8 months pregnant, his attitude is not acceptable. I walked away and swear to god that I will never buy anything from this store. read more

Today, I was in the warehouse browsing and watched a National Lumber employee deal with an extremely irate, difficult customer. Nick was the employee. The customer was frustrated with something that seemed to be nobody's fault. Nick was cutting cedar planks for him and the customer kept going at him about not being able to complete his job with what he purchased after the cuts he requested were made. Nick remained calm and polite. He asked the customer what he could do to make him happy and obliged as best he could. I was extremely impressed but not surprised. Covid projects, from Water barrel stands, to a full garage overhaul and cleanup, to painting several rooms, National Lumber is and always will be my first stop. Close and convenient and the people really care, often I find myself in the aisle having conversation with the staff (George and Ernie are the best) they give me advice on all my projects and how to tackle them. Front counter help Terri, Michele, Traci and Rita are great and always helpful and smiling when I come in. You can go to a big box store but whey? when you can get great service and talk to people who know their stuff and care! read more

Horrible customer service!!! Great place but the customer service is absolutely horrible. You need to improve this to keep business. The cashiers in the past have not been friendly at all and they are the face of your business. Today, her demeanor was much better but still bossy and she never told me that I had to go into the lumber building to pick up my bag of sand. Luckily, I have been there before and knew the routine. Why wouldn't she do this? It seems that she wants to make customers' lives so difficult. I pulled in the building and waited, waited, waited. No one came. There was even an employee in front of me that throwing sand on the ground. Never looked up. Had to say hello to get his attention :( When I tried to get out of the lumber yard, there were 18 wheelers everywhere. No one was directing traffic and had weave in and out of rows, between truck, lifts.....what a mess! You need to have someone directing cars if you are asking customers to go into the lumber yard to pick up a bag of sand. The last time I was there, before today, when I checked out, the guy at the booth asked me to open my hatch to see what I had purchased but never closed my hatch and I drove away like this?????? Was waiting for him to provide a little customer service but he never did. Couldn't believe this one! These people are incredibly rude and disrespectful to their customers. We had some issues with some of their building materials that are under warranty. My wife called the national lumber store in Newton to explain what was going on several times to be transferred, misdirected, mocked and then they called my wife a moron while she was on the phone with them. Very unprofessional group of losers. If you want to be disrespected, put down and have to deal with a run around, National Lumber is your store! Despite this business not being near my house (and with many options to choose from), I decided to take the time to buy the door at this place. Because I have previously purchased my kitchen cabinets there. I walked and and I waited and waited, and nobody at the door section was there, so I decided to make some copies to my home keys and picked some other tools and supplies I needed. I was with my two kids, 6 and 8 y/o and we look around the store until we noticed the person at the doors was available; I walked to the counter, and I kindly requested the door; I provided the rough dimensions, and I mentioned I need the door to be wooden with glass. All I got is a really bad attitude, lots of yelling regarding the size of the door. The person clearly was not happy to help me. No matter what I said, the person kept being disrespectful. Because the rough door opening at my house is not standard, he decided a custom door ITS GOING TO BE TO MUCH MONEY for me, and also IT WOULD TAKE TOO MANY WEEKS TO MAKE. Basically, he decided I should buy a bigger door and cut it, which is fine; however, after requesting the door's cost to be cut, he said (yelling) THIS DOOR IS GOING TO BE 670 SIR!!! Then he closed the catalog and dismissed me. He assumed again it is too expensive and he decided it is too much money for me. I asked why can't and order?? and he said he thought I'm just asking for prices. (AGAIN yelling). I said, "no, thank you, I don't want the door anymore, I don't understand why you are so rude" He requested talking to the manager; the manager then showed up and as nothing happened, just nodded his head and said, "But he just apologized to you." like it is ok being disrespected for just. Horrible customer service. If your project is dependent on a strict timeline and you rely on this horrible store for material, you will be hugely disappointed. Store guys just know how to take an order and your money. There is no control on when they will deliver. They give a delivery date that they do not stick to. They will never call you if there is a delay. I am trying to save others from the pain I went through. Just avoid these guys and go to Home depot or Lowes. At least you will know when the material will be delivered for sure. read more

This company is not good for business. They delivered a sub standard cabinet instead of the high end one we ordered. Run don't walk from this company. They do not deal fairly with their customers. I dread going here and avoid it at all costs unless I have to, because the staff is incredibly unfriendly, unwelcoming, and discourteous and they act like I'm ruining their day by existing. I know this is Boston and we're not at the top of the list of friendliest cities in the country but for chrissake make an effort people. Until they learn some customer service/social skills I'll do my best to take my business to Concord Lumber, Sterritt, or even Home Depot where at least I'll get a "hello sir, what can I do for you?" And a "thanks have a nice day" at the end of the transaction. Edit: after reading some of the other reviews it seems that my complaint is a common one. I'm surprised that the business owner has apparently not cared enough to rectify the issue, because I was there twice in the past two days and nothing was good about my customer experience. I really don't like this place. The cashier is mean and I can't ever find anyone to help me. I have a kitchen that was installed by the kitchen department years ago and have needed to replace the hinges over the years. "NO! We don't have them!" I had to go to Lowe's for help. Since I like to shop locally, I did use the kitchen and bath department recently to get a new vanity and the woman, Diane, was very helpful. How does she stand working in such a mean place? National lumber made a delivery in our neighborhood today, the boom from the truck hit our wires in the neighborhood and causing the electricity in the whole neighborhood clearing out 15+ homes and when I called and spoke to management and they said it was you know just basically an accident that they couldn't help well unfortunately when your driver is operating a boom and not paying attention to wires yeah that's not accidental that's operator error national lumber's management was not compassionate Herb the new Bedford office should not be a manager his customer service is very poor. And I was also told and saw other damage to the property that the delivery was delivered to driver should've just parked in the road away from the wires away from the properties driveway! read more

Hello , Do you know that people use credit to go to college, open businesses, and buy homes. They have the opportunity to use credit to build a better future for themselves and their loved ones. Credit discrimination prevents people from having access to these opportunities, I am here to complain about the credit application department from National Lumber located in and the phone call I received form Michelle the representative who called me back because I requested an explanation why my application was denied, first she was very unprofessional asking if I new what my credit score is , also she said she did not see any information about my vendor list that we gave them , then she said that she would not want to call the salesperson from my vendor list because she said that they lie. Would not recommend any new company that is trying to build a serious vendor and costumer relationship with National Lumber because they don't know how to be polite and give understanding answer to their potencial new clients. I help disrespected and also discouraged from her. Hearing her making negative comments about my credit score and not having the right information from my credit application was very upsetting. Why people go to National Lumber is a mystery to me. The woman that work the counter are all rude and seem to not want anyone other than a contractor in the store. I had to order some azec posts and the sales person was huffy puff and rude with me. He also seemed to think because I was a woman i would be unable to install azec. Avoid this place i would rather go to a Home Depot or lowes which i also despise. The owners must be a real pleasure to work for here since everyone employee is rude. read more

Pretty sure some posters here are either employees or friends of... I'm not buying the "we love the paint people thing"... My sister in law bought a few gallons of paint to finish an interior project in her new house. Only problem was the first gallon didn't match the second, THEN the third didn't match EITHER of the first two! When they went back to inquire, they were only then told, "Oh yeah, we've been having trouble with that color machine..." After much talk, they offered them a few gallons of paint, but nothing in re. to the 12-hours she and her BF - and a pro painter! - spent painting. Since then, no one they've tried to speak to has attempted to help - including the owner - so they're filing paperwork with Small Claims and the Better Business Bureau. Needless to say I won't be shopping there, and I don't recommend anyone else does either. read more

I stopped in the store to get help with ceiling paint and mold resistant paint options. I stopped the paint desk and a older gentlemen was there so I explained in very specific terms my problem asked him for advice. I guess that his customer service skills were either retired or out to lunch that day. He responded with a bothered look and a pointed his finger to a aisle in front of him where the paint was. Oh that's helpful ..which brand from the hundreds in the aisle should I choose from? After about ten minutes of searching I grab a paint brand flyer and went to Home Depot. There my questions were addressed and I got the products I needed. I will not waste time dealing with National Lumber again. Hey National Lumber...It's not 1980 anymore! Bob knows EVERYTHING about paint, and will assist you in choosing just the right color and finish for every room in your house. Bring fabric swatches, wood colors, you name it and he will assist you in a perfect match. He's great at his job, knows his paints and colors, and I would be lost without him. Fabulous, fabulous service! The staff here is so very helpful and funny. Folks always help me find whatever I came in for. in fact, they helped me find the 30-gallon galvanized metal trash can of my dreams and called when it arrived. We all took a moment to admire it before I took it home. They saved the day the water main from the street to my cellar broke and the house was flooding. One of the cashiers saw me holding a sump pump and hose, said "Those two together are a bad sign" and rang me up right away. Try getting that service at Home Despot read more

I have had a terrible experience with National Lumber. My husband and I bought extremely expensive Omega cabinets through them that came damaged. Some of them came without paint on them. Some of them came with wood that was bowed and not sanded properly. In the beginning, they were very accommodating. Now Bill, the manager is demanding that we pay the rest of the balance before they will come out and fix the problems. We currently have cabinets that are painted two different colors. We have cabinets with huge bows in the wood that cannot be fixed. My husband and I have been going back and forth with them for months. I have taken several days off of work for them to come out and look or "fix" the paint issue. They came with the wrong paint color which is why we currently have two colors painted on our cabinets. They are not willing to take more than $2000 off of our bill which is ridiculous given the amount we paid and the way our cabinets currently look. I would not recommend them to anyone. This has been a horrible experience and we are not even done yet. The cabinets are not even worth half of what we paid and we are extremely disappointed. When the repair company came out, the truck leaked oil all over our new driveway and we now have a stain. They have stopped responding to our emails. Do not use them! read more

My review is based solely on the Paint Department. I recently moved into a old home in the area and have been doing as much of the work I can on my own. I have been going to DAN for all my paint projects. The guy does it all! He matches colors like a magician. I brought in a few things for him to match, and they ALL have been spot on, which I know is extremely hard to do, and something I haven't had anyone else able to do with such great perfection. Dan has advised me on the proper ways to complete all my paint projects. I thought I knew how to paint, but with his advise my projects have come out better than any professional that I have hired in the past and I know my work is going to last. I highly suggest asking for Dan when it comes to paint, you may need to wait because even the professionals are asking for him in particular, but it is well worth the wait. Bravo national lumber! I've been going here for years now for working supplies. The people inside are very nice, friendly, and helpful. They are usually pretty busy. They have a lot of home products that you might find at a home depot. It's really a better environment for contractors however. I have had a few bad experiences with staff in the lumber yard, They are a bit more reluctant to help you. read more

They have everything. The staff is unbelievably helpful, and are veterans of home improvement. If you tell them what you're trying to do, they will tell you how to do it, because they've done it, and they know. There is a ton of stuff in the store, so if you don't have the exact name for "the plastic thing with the light switch that flips" they may not show you exactly what you were looking for the first time. So specify "the plastic thing that covers the light switch that flips" and they will probably be like "Oh. Switchplates. Follow me." Because they have it. I promise. They have everything. read more

TL;DR: I'm comfortable giving them all the stars. National Lumber occupies a narrow set of aisles between smaller hardware stores and Big Warehouse. As a somewhat handy homeowner - one who, back in the day, dabbled a bit in the painting game - I find then sitting squarely in the Goldilocks Zone: just right, for most things hardware. I can't vouch for the lumber yard, but they are well stocked for all my needs: Paint and stain, home repair, lawn and garden tools, nuts and bolts, etc. I have seen all kinds of folks in there, all getting the stuff and whatever help they need. Staff are competent and courteous. Full-time cashiers and dedicated specialty staff (paint, home, lumber) keep the place running smoothly. Kudos to the guy who directed me to the better / cheaper brushes and drop cloths. Paint Mixing Guy (one of three!) addressed my questions and concerns with patience and appropriate detail. Cashier Pros whisk me in and out without pushing, no small feat. They do cater to pros, contractors, and task rabbits. Most of the people I've hired seem to like this place. One exception: my "go to" plumber, who implied that he could drive a little further and find better selection and lower prices for his needs. read more

My wife and i decided to try out national lumber to build 2 decks and remodel a bathroom.Our contractor told us to go to national where we would get the individual help we wouldn't get at lowes or home depot. Richard was very easy to deal with but told us he was overwhelmed with work at the beginning of June. We gave him the measurements and 2 days later we called him and told us how much decking we needed and everything was 3 days out. A week goes by and we call and are told the color was discontinued. We get up and go to national again to pick a new color. Now its 2 weeks out and we pay again and wait for credit on 1 st order. Talking over $10 k in material. Part of the order is on back order. Now my wife has been handed over to kenny also very nice and responsive. We fell real short on the order and my contractor now beginning of july is getting impatient. On july 2 nd kenny tells my wife he's issuing another credit. The 13 th know credit. my wife calls and he said he processed the credit. Now i have to order another $1000 of materials and its all on back order. My contractor has now left for 2 weeks and tells me to go to waltham lumber because National has gone down hill. 2 stars because they treated my wife nice as they dragged her thru a horrible experience read more

I called them for a quote almost 2 weeks ago. They sent me a blank quote back. I ended up emailing back a week later and the salesman that answered my email said that he hadn't heard from his buyer yet, he was going to call them that day. I purchase a $30000 kitchen from Kitchen View (AKA National Lumber) and it came in raised panel not the flat we wanted and several other problem$. National Lumber and it's CEO (who deleted my email without reading it read receipt) are refusing to issue me a credit until I sign a "be quiet agreement". A "be quiet agreement" is when someone is screwing me and don't want me telling the world that I think they are awful people who lie and deceive. Yup, that's right, NO NEGATIVE reviews. I am a disabled Vet who is getting porked by these folks. I registered a complaint with the Attorney Generals office. And now I will have to hire someone to tell them to give me MY money. Bob the paint whisperer ! Absolutely incredible - I stopped into National Lumber thinking I knew what color we wanted to paint the exterior of our house. He advised me to try an alternative and it is perfect. A big decision, big investment and his advice made all the difference. I could not have done better even if I paid a designer to separately come to my house and make a recommendation. Once we knew the base he also advised on trim and shutter colors. I bought a bathroom vanity through the kitchen department at National Lumber in Newton and it is beautiful! I just walked in not even sure that they did bathroom vanities. Diane took care of me. I only had about 45 minutes & she quickly walked me through the whole process. She helped me get a vanity that I LOVE and that I haven't seen anywhere else in months of looking. It was like having a friend on the inside. The vanity is extremely good quality, dove-tail, all wood, soft close doors. I will now go to National Lumber for everything! read more

The store kinda sucks. The staff at the back desk are pretty useless. The older guy at the front desk isn't bad, but the woman sucks. She's lazy as anything. To get her to spin her chair around will be a miracle. The only true good thing about this store is 2 of the paint guys. I wish I caught their names. One is a younger guy who really tries and the other is a taller older gentleman with a bit of a limp. Those 2 guys pretty much are the only reason to visit the paint part of the house. The prices are not as competitive as I first thought. Everyone else in the store is surly. Tip, try the big box stores first, then ace/true and finally a lumber yard, just not this one. read more

Liars first I had to wait 5 minutes for the girl at the desk to stop stuffing her face. I wanted a propane fill. She then lied to me and told me the machine was being services for the next hour.
