I will admit that my rating and the overall rating of Nations Cafe is a bit harsh. From what I can tell, this restaurant had some issues many years ago and reviews have been trending more positively lately. I've been to Nations Cafe a couple of times and I've had pretty good experiences, though there are definitely some areas for improvement. After speaking with some of the employees, I've learned that the main cuisine of the restaurant is Nigerian food. This was super cool to me, there are not many Nigerian restaurants in the area! This place gives you the full Nigerian experience. There are stews, soups, fufu, meats, seafood, vegetarian options, you name it! The menu is large and gives you plenty of options. I tend to stick with the stews when I order. The first time I visited, I ordered their beef stew and it was absolutely delicious. The stew itself packs a ton of flavor, there is definitely tomato, peppers and a whole lot of different spices in it. The beef was tender and flavorful as well. Each stew comes with two different sides. The jollof rice is a must! The rice is cooked perfectly and has so much flavor as well. When you combine the stew and rice together it is a flavor explosion, in a good way! Some other sides that I think are decent are the fried plantains and the cabbage. Those sides don't each touch the jollof rice in terms of quality. I tried to get the collard greens on my last visit, but they were out. Sad! I also recently got the hen stew. The stew was great yet again, but the hen was definitely dry. I definitely prefer the beef stew. While the food is generally good, the big problem of the restaurant is the service. Don't get me wrong, the people working there are super nice and pleasant to speak with. However every time I walk in, there isn't someone to accommodate me. My guess is that they are just surprised that I actually want to eat there, so this will get a slight pass. Throughout the meal though, the servers never check up on me. They are basically there to take my order, deliver the food and that's it! They could definitely do better! Another problem in my eyes are the prices. I spend about $30 on a single meal there, it's a bit hefty of a price. They also charge for water, which I didn't realize the first time. Again, this would've been helped on with better service! Although the restaurant does have some problems, I think the uniqueness of the food and its quality will have me going back. I certainly think you should give Nations Cafe a chance, it is so much better than the rating would suggest! read more

Outside the shopping area was pretty smelly and dirty. Inside the place still looks like they're renovating/just opened. They're still disorganized and took a few minutes before we were acknowledged but friendly service after we were. Ordered the Fufu with Egosi and okra soup. The fufu was very good, but the okra soup was a bit of a letdown. Washed it down with some Malta Guinness. We'll stop by again and the fufu is recommended but I'd suggest being prepared to take your food to go. read more

After being on social media, and seeing all of this amazing African food being prepared, I got a obsession with finding some ox tails and fufu. If you have ever just had a taste for something that you had never had before and then when you actually found it, and it was so delicious... I almost cried. It was one of those moments where you start chewing and you just have to throw your head back with your eyes closed and just take the moment lol. It is not like a fancy restaurant. I would probably order takeout versus going to sit. But I believe this is a place that is primarily for takeout. The service served its purpose as far as takeout goes. I called. They answer the phone really quickly and took my order very accurately, and answered my questions, and when I got there, I paid for my food and I walked out to the car. The food was piping hot and of course I didn't wait for it to cool down to start eating lol how could I smell was amazing. I will definitely be back whenever. I have a desire for traditional well-made African food. It was very well seasoned and I felt like someone's family was in that kitchen making the food for their family. I will be back. I must say that I am the person that Hass to know exactly what I'm getting because I do not like all of the food that suits their traditional food pallett. BUT I Now HAVE A FAVORITE... listen! My first time here. I ordered Obogno and Pounded yam and I have no complaints. I added a bit more seasoning on my own but it already had a good spicy taste. been missing my fufu the obogno is a plus lol. They have improved the inside and it is clean. The menu can be improved to aid faster ordering by adding description under and numbers so you dont have to mess with the pronunciation. The ladies are nice and friendly. The food is good but I guess depends on the chef. It was authentic and freshly made my previous times, but the last time (Dec 21) it seems more defrosted and warmed. I want to just start by saying that I reallyyyyyy wanted to like this place, however it was just not living up to what I'm used to. So back home in WI I have a really good from that's from Africa(Senegal) and I've had the pleasure of tasting authentic African cuisines. I ordered from here the fish with tomatoe&onion sauce, jollof rice and beans. There simply wasn't any flavor. Nothing to rave about, nothing that I'll order again but I guess I'm glad I tried it. I've been waiting for years to try this restaurant, but since it is not close to my house I had to wait until I was on this side of town. I ordered through their website with gave me a timer indicating that my food would be ready in 15 minutes. I arrived at the exact time that my order was to be completed. When I arrived there was a party of eight sitting at the table. No other inside patrons, call in orders were taking place. It took about 10 to 15 minutes for me to be greeted by anyone, as I sat and listened to them discuss in personal business and food orders. The waitress took the table of eight's order, but forgot a person. The chef told the patron to writer the order down. It was clear they were disorganized. As expected when I was finally greeted I was informed they hadn't received my order, and I was informed their tablet wasn't working. *Just a note, please close online ordering if the tablet isn't working* Both the chef and the waitress were friendly and came to check my order twice, but you can tell they have no way to track orders. I ordered what I typically get from other West African restaurants (potato leaf greens and fufu). I informed the chef myself that I did not eat meat (I'm vegetarian) yet meat was placed in my order anyway. Not only was it visible chunks, but the food also smelled as if seafood was previously in the meat. This is an issue for me, my child is allergic to seafood. I ate a couple of bites, but after smelling the overwhelming seafood smell I had to wait to finish until later when I wasn't around my child. The fufu was good. Potato greens not so much. The ambiance and decor inside looks like they just moved in this morning. It's in disarray, and dirty. Hole in the wallish...However, the bathroom was clean I appreciated that much. Decent food, terrible service! Dad and I came here because we felt adventurous - we never had any cuisine from the continent other than Ethiopian and Moroccan. The menu didn't provide any description of the dishes. The only thing I recognized is fufu, which I've seen on TV on numerous occasions. Naturally, I asked for recommendation and description. The waitress, with an annoyed tone, told us stick with something we know from the menu. Yeah right! If I wanted jerk chicken or fish and chips, I wouldn't come to an African restaurant, would I?!? Without any help from the waitress, I literally picked two items randomly....I couldn't even tell you what I ordered. When the food came out, both are some sort of stew, both with fufu - a staple. After my experience with poi in Hawaii, I expected fufu to taste no better than than, and I was right. It was just a starchy, tasteless "paste". The other dishes were actually kinda nice. I don't even know how to describe them, other than they taste very different from the usual American food. My less open-minded dad hated the dishes....which I can see why. One of the leafy ingredients in the stew produces a slimy consistency, which can be off-putting for some people. Also, the fish in one of the stew tasted like salted fish in southeast Asia - i.e. lots of umami flavor, which is normally associated with fermented, dried, and/or cured products. Whenever I try a restaurant for the first time, I always ask the server for recommendations. I was told by the waitress here(who I later discovered was the owner's daughter) to not ask for recommendations or suggestions..."just order what you want and that's it", were the exact words used as she walked away. The 1st issue really was when she would not wipe my table down...all of them were dirty so I just decided to just wipe it down myself with a nearby napkin. I asked to speak with a manager after more rude service...she sent the chef instead for some reason‍. Eight of us had lunch at noon on a Sunday recently. We were there as staff arrived and opened for the day. Service was very pleasant, friendly, and informative. Drink orders consisted of one beer and seven bottles of water at $1 each. My wife had the Curry Fish (tilapia) with plantains and green beans. I chose the Assorted Meat Stew with plantains and Jollof Rice. Both meals were excellent - flavorful and tasty. The West African cuisine was all familiar looking and tasting. I really wish I could continue eating here, but this restaurant is not Vegan/Vegetarian friendly and the same mistakes are starting to cost me. All of the Veggie and No meat dishes contain meat. If you order no meat and receive meat, they tell you it's your fault for not telling them your vegetarian because they still add "some meat" to every order. So every time I order I ask "vegetarian no meat" and nothing changes. When I place orders over the phone or in person it's the same result--but atleast then I can ask them to remake it and double check but that's pretty excessive for every time. **at one point in time they started getting my veggie efo right, but as soon as I started getting the veggie egusi the same exact thing started happening and I'm tired of having to go back and forth everytime. very disappointed because this is my favorite restaurant. read more

My husband and I Occasionally go there to eat and the food is always excellent. Best African restaurant in Atlanta. Best place to eat Igbo or Calabar food. The egusi is cooked exactly like home food and the nkwobi was to die for... We've had dryfish and stock fish peppersoup for starters and it was truly amazing... You even get Nigerian Tv channels and listen to Nigerian music all through and the waitresses and waiters can speak to you in several languages- both local and international languages like pidgin, Igbo, calabar, Yoruba, French, Arabic, Spanish and Russian. You should give the Afang or Edikiakong a try, and you can get Nigerian drinks like Bitter lemon and palm wine and many others you won't get anywhere else. Best place ever in Atlanta and close to the Nigerian embassy and nice shopping spots. We have even met celebrities Kanu Nwankwo, Jim Iyke, P-Square on occasion while dinning in. read more

Oh my ... Honestly, I am a bit conflicted with this ... Service: so very slow, so very awkward, but the lady was nice and seemed intrigued at the fact that we were interested in their dish. Food: how do I put this? If you are not used to this type of food, then I truly sincerely suggest to stay clear. Although I have never had authentic African food (or at least, not that I am aware of), I imagine that this food is as close to the real thing as you can get. Their flavor combinations are very different to that of an American palette... not even close to Hispanic or Italian or Chinese elements that most of us are accustomed to, most especially in this part of the world. Now, I tried the Fufu and edikangkong (?) and i must say that it is a very challenging meal. Yet, I like greens and i was able to finish the edikangkong, but the Fufu was much too new for me... although I dont have anything bad to say about it, I cant honestly tell you that it was anything more than: "it was quite an experience." Now, my friends had the curry chicken and it is NOWHERE near like the indian or thai curry type of dish that you may imagine. It has strong notes of cinnamon and other spices that is indeed very foreign to even someone like me who has been exposed to a lot of different dishes and different flavor combinations. It is, however, a big plate of food. Prices: Their prices is quite steep to be honest - considering the fact that they mainly use cheap ingredients and cheap cuts of meat, it is definitely not justifiable. Bad experience alert: Bottled waters are $1 each and they automatically give each a bottle without advising you that it is an extra charge. We realized this only after half of our party has already opened their bottles. We then asked for sweet tea and we had to ask our waitress SEVERAL awkward times for our drink. After a long while, she finally just nonchalantly told us that they dont have sweet tea and did not bother to offer anything more. We just sat there kinda dumbfounded. So we then ordered a pitcher of "country style lemonade" and to our disappointment, it was not freshly squeezed lemonade ... or not even the soda kind of lemonade ... it was the lemonade literally from the plastic container labeled "country maid." LOL? And it was oh so sweet that it was quite inedible. We then asked for just a pitcher of tap water, which again took so much longer than needed. I dont know why it was like pulling teeth to get something to drink from this place, but it was definitely not a cool experience. All in all, if you are feeling brave ... I mean, VERY brave and want to try something new - then, maybe you should try this place. But for the price you will have to pay, along with this little knowledge that their dish is VERY different from what many Americans are used to, and the fact that they are not really tweaking their dishes for the American palette ... you may have to dive in here with some full on determination ... otherwise, i cannot really recommend this to anyone else. read more

Writing this review for the nation's cafe that's in hapeville. 2 out of 5 stars due to poor customer service, calling in to place an order to go and still having to wait 30 minutes after it took you 30 mins to get there. The food score was a low B but I gambled with my health because I have eaten food from there before and did not get sick. Most of my west African friends love this place. They make some of the best west African food in atlanta, I can't dispute that. I haven't been in awhile since I've learned how to make my favorite dishes from nigeria. The prices are about $12 - $15 a plate, some people may find that expensive but I think it's a good deal considering making it from scratch at home costs more and is time consuming. Worth checking out but don't expect stellar service and expect a possible wait. read more

Nations Cafe has authentic West African food. I used to live in Africa so I love to eat there for the memories it gives me and the food is good! Personally, I like the okra soup with oat foo foo. Plantains or rice rather than foo foo would probably be more comfortable for people who haven't had African food before. Just like in Africa, they'll tell you what they have from the menu and they don't necessarily have everything. I do think the prices are a bit steep but I'll keep going back when I'm in town. read more

I went there as a result of a recommendation from a Nigerian co-worker of mine. He goes there regularly. He recommended the fufu. I had fufu with a mixed meat with okra sound. It was delicious. The last time I had fufu was during my college years in NYC, where I grew up. I am sorry I waited so long. It was worth the wait. The waitress was friendly and attentive. You eat fufu with your hands dipping the doughy paste into the soup, which was actually closer to a stew. I ate every last drop. I will be going back there again. read more
