I pulled over on a cross-state trip to this modest rail town, and found a more diverse selection of cuisine than I expected. This Indian place is in a pretty old building, but it is pleasantly decorated inside. I ordered a solid two meals, getting a samosa chaat which was very minty, a malai kofta which delivered just the right hint of kick at medium spicy, and a bread on the side that tasted fresh. My chai was worthwhile as well. The biggest thing I had against them is that I immediately felt parched after dining, and while all restaurants probably use more salt than they should, this one needs to dial it back a bit. A lovely restaurant in downtown Culpeper. We confirmed with the owners the meat is halal. This is probably the best south asian food you will find for miles. We went on two occasions and tried the garlic naan, channa masala, daals, chicken tikka masala and goat curries. The thali was super good with the tandoori chicken. The only adjustment I would make is the gravies are a bit on the thin side so it makes it hard to eat with naan. The curries are also served with rice so if you are eating it with rice it's no issue, but it can be tough with naan. Otherwise great institution we will be back! The owners are sweet and the quality is good. I don't think you can find better south asian food in the area. I'm giving 3 stars simply because I'm south asian and a tough critic and comparing to restaurants in nova as well, but for the Culpeper/Central VA area it's def 4 stars. read more

We were frequently on town and had passed by the restaurant a number of times. We saw they had a lunch buffet listed and wanted to give it a try one weekend. One Saturday we made the drive for lunch. We went in, sat down, and waited a few moments before the server came over. We said we wanted to go with the lunch buffet. At that point the server said they didn't do the lunch buffet except on Sundays. It wasn't 100% clear why, but the menus on the outside windows as well as in the table menu both said "lunch buffet, Tuesday - Sunday". We decided we'd give it a try and order off the menu. I had the lamb rogan josh and my wife had the tandoori chicken with a side of the cheese naan. The naan was quite nice. Fluffy and flavorful. The lamb rogan josh was ok. I went medium spicy, which was a good choice. The sauce was quite thin and the lamb was in very small pieces. Definitely a lot more sauce than meat. The tandoori chicken smelled lovely on the hot plate. A decent amount of chicken, though the seasoning also seems to be lacking a little. We probably wouldn't go out of our way, though I'm curious to see how the buffet is. read more

We drove in from Fredericksburg on a friend's recommendation -- it was well worth the trip! The food and drink menus are well-varied and the waitstaff was very helpful, answering our many questions. I've been here several times while visiting family in the area. They've been consistent over the years. The menu has vegan options clearly marked on the menu which I appreciate. The service is always top notch. The water glass is always being replenished and rarely have I had to wait long for my food to arrive. The dining room is comfortable, art on the old brick walls depicts scenes from Indian culture. The background music is pleasant and appropriate for the surroundings. One note: if you like really spicy food and always chasing the super spicy heat like me be sure to place an emphasis on your preference when asked about the spice level. Usually I've had excellent super spicy heat level when requested but the last visit the two dishes weren't that spicy although still good. Just wish there had been more heat. read more

I called in our order, although I think you can also order ahead through Grubhub. I arrived a bit early and the staff was very friendly and offered me a seat and a drink while I waited. Food was nicely packed and still hot even after 45 min before arriving home to eat. We ordered butter chicken and the Tandoori Mixed Grill. Both a great value for all the food you get (both come with basmati rice which is not pictured), and the favors are wonderful without being too overpowering. Had dinner here for the first time Friday May 10th. My wife ate here with our daughter on Mother's Day last year. Wish I had tagged along. I was visiting downtown Culpeper for the day, it was a Saturday so many places closed early and by boyfriend and I wanted to grab dinner before going home. This place closed at around 9, and I've always wanted to try Indian food. I didn't know what to expect except that there would be a lot of curry. Please excuse my lack of knowledge. Once we were seated they started us off with a free appetizer, I'm not really sure what it was but it was thin bread toasted with three sauces on the side. It was good I wasn't sure how to apply the sauce if I had to dip or spread. I was just hoping I didn't look ridiculous. Eventually we ordered the shrimp poori for our appetizer, I got lamb curry and my boyfriend got the seafood curry which both came with a side of rice. The appetizer we ordered finally came in, it was a bubble with shrimp and sauce inside. It was literally heaven (my boyfriend described it as glorious), if you love seafood and flavor this is definitely something you should try. The shrimp was so thick and juicy and the sauce was amazing, we demolished everything. Our food finally came in, the lamb I had was very tender and fulfilling. We made a bed of rice and put our curry on top. We definitely had extras but I ate them as soon as I got home, it was too good. This place totally got me and my boyfriend hooked on Indian food, even though we aren't from the area we would definitely come back and will be trying Indian food back at our university. read more

What a great find in a small town. My family stopped by Natraj yesterday and we were all very happy and impressed with the food and service. From the appetizers to the drinks, beer, wine and Lassi, the server knew exactly what would complement their food. For our appetizer, we had chicken chilly. It was delicious and reminded me of what I ate in Nepal. For our main course we had chicken curry and dal tadka with rice and bread (Naan and chapati). We had three servings of chicken curry for the table and each one had the spicy level according to our preferences (I just really like my food to be pretty spicy). Our breads were fresh and the dal tadka (yellow lentils) was probably my favorite. We ended our meal with chai (hot milk tea) instead of dessert because we were so full. One disinterested waiter served us but never refilled water glasses, and seemed borderline unfriendly. Food quality - poor selection and not being refilled once an item had run out. This is one of the best Indian restaurants my wife and I have experienced. Whenever possible, we always order from here when we commute from NoVA to Charlottesville. You can order online or call the restaurant to place your order. I recommend calling simply because you can get extra spicy when you call! We ran into this place and all I can say is: we fell in love. We are originally from an area that has tons of Indian food and this would give anything in northern Virginia a run for their money. Food was excellent. The entire place was clean and spotless. The service was insanely fast. The appetizer came out in maybe 5 minutes and the food took no more than 10. They even gave us a rice "refill" even though we were basically almost done with our meal. Our server was very attentive and nice the entire night. I was there for the lunchtime buffet and was sadly disappointed. There were not many options, and many of the dishes were almost empty and were not refilled in the time that I was there (about an hour). There were hardly any vegetarian dishes, and the ones present were mediocre at best. The aloo was decent, but the daal makhani was very disappointing- hardly any lentils at all. The chicken curry was bland, but I enjoyed the chicken chilli. No complaints about the chicken masala. I went over for a rice pudding dessert but there was hardly any left. I have been to Natraj several times in the past and really enjoyed it. I do hope that management can step their game up again and improve the quality. I learned about this new Indian restaurant through Facebook posts by an Indian restaurant in Winchester that I think is owned by the same people. We went to their lunch buffet today. We got there at 11:15 am and sampled all of their items. We were disappointed that all the food that should have been hot was only lukewarm. We think that it was prepared ahead of time, put in the refrigerator, and then set out in the buffet to heat. Later. When I got seconds, most of the food was getting heated up. The food tasted liked warmed up leftovers, especially the chicken. The best dish was Bombay Aloo - potato dish with spices. The worst dishes that we tasted and didn't eat were the dahl and spinach with paneer cheese. I usually love these dishes. These versions were quite bitter and tasted like they got the spices wrong.
