FOOD: The food was great! We were in town visiting relatives but not like eat at their house for dinner kinda relatives. Plus, we like doing our own thing, especially when visiting places we've never been. So we found ourselves at TAJ. The food was incredible (I had chicken tikka masala, my go to, and some other dish that was basically tikka masala but instead of chicken it was like fried cheese???) Also had mango lassi, and 8 million pieces of naan! SERVICE: The service was awesome! Not many folks there, as it was a fandom weekday and basically Christmas eve ... but nonetheless they treated us so well, so friendly and so professional. AMBIANCE: Pretty nice. I ordered the lamb vindaloo and spicy is spicy! The piece of lamb were not fatty and the sauce was not super greasy. The sauce in the vindaloo had more of a sour taste then what I am used too. It was ok. read more

Taj is a must-visit in Fredericksburg if you're an Indian food fan. The atmosphere and setup in the restaurant are top-notch: white tablecloths, pleasant music, and very clean. The prices are reasonable, the quality and flavors of the food are excellent, and the service is friendly and decently fast. I've come here multiple times and enjoyed it every time, however, when I brought a party of 5 adults and ordered 5-6 different meat dishes to share, the waiter only brought us one small bowl of rice for the table and we kept having to ask for more rice (he kept bringing one bowl at a time). Each meat dish came with rice according to the menu, so it was just a bit inconvenient to keep requesting more when it should've been brought out for everyone from the beginning. A convenient location, my sisters and I decided to meet here- a party of 10 altogether. The restaurant was easily able to accommodate us all. The decor is tastefully understated, and the music was quiet enough that we could enjoy it while still carrying on conversations. The menu was surprising- many of the dishes were unfamiliar to me (my Indian family are Hyderabadi, and a lot of the dishes here are Punjabi), so I took the opportunity to try something new- Krofta-a-Sahib Anjeeri, which was potato dumplings stuffed with figs, served in a cashew sauce. It was really amazingly delicious, but I was surprised and disappointed that for $17 I got TWO dumplings the size of ping pong balls. My Bride had the Reshmi Malai chicken, a chef's recipe dish, which was basically a chicken curry. A little steep at $21. (Keep in mind that this was at noon, so it's not like we were ordering off the supper menu.) I'm not sure what my Kid ordered- they were down the table with the cousins- or what the meal cost, because my brother in law snaked the check. We'll probably be back the next time I need to meet up with my sister because it's a convenient spot and can accommodate her food allergies, but I would certainly not make the 2 hour drive just to eat here. The food is great! They ask you your preferred spice level we got spicy for both entrees and there was heat there. The Biryani was really spicy if I get it again I would lower the spice level on that, but the flavor was amazing . The goat meat is super tender and delicious. The decor needs some help, but the food makes up for it. The staff was great our waiter checked on our table numerous times and ensured we had everything we needed. I haven't had Indian food (except for the curries I cook at home) since I moved back to the United States last summer! Decided to give Taj a try, and I'm glad I did! They have a 1-5 spice level for their curry. I love spicy, so I got the 4 (hot) butter chicken and a garlic naan. So amazing! I have plenty leftover, too! I also got a garden salad. My husband and I love Indian cuisine. This restaurant is truly a gem in Fredericksburg! Ravi, our server, was extremely kind & the food certainly did not disappoint. Large portions so eat until your hearts content (we had plenty for leftovers!) The favors of each dish we ordered was mesmerizing, nicely presented, and absolutely delicious. We loved being able to decide how much spice & heat we wanted--American or Indian levels. We chose American spicy (middle spice level) and it was plenty spicy to warm up your body but also still able to enjoy. A friend and I were at home looking forward to ordering out for dinner. Spur of the moment decision to visit TAJ. We ordered food from Taj before and it was pretty amazing. Getting to Taj is easy. Parking is easy. Taj is pretty unassuming. It would be easy to miss it unless you're looking for it. We sat outside and were waited on by Raj. He was very attentive. The food arrived quickly and the order was correct. The menu allows you to pick and entrée and pick your level of heat. I had Vegetable Masal Samosa, Vegetable Fritters, Kofta A Sahib Anjeeri and delicious yogurt drink I no longer remember the name of. I thought the food was amazing. I'll admit that I've not had Indian food from other Taj so that's all I know. But, my dinner date knows Indian food and she was very impressed. We'll be back. read more

When I first came here I didn't have a great impression. Part of it was that the young waiter revealed that the manager takes the server's tips. This struck me as greedy and possibly illegal. Without knowing if there's any more to the story, I decided to come back. I must admit that the food is well-made and pretty good quality, I can probably buy that this is the best Indian in Fredericksburg. It's a little different from most Indian places. Some people might like that and others not so much. I think this is southern-style Indian. Seems authentic. Some items go by different names or are prepared differently from what I'm used to. For example they offer duck vindaloo instead of the traditional lamb or chicken, and label it Vin d'Ahlo. I don't see pakora but I'm sure the vegetable fritters are the same thing. They didn't seem to have the kind of chicken curry I'm used to, but suggested the Mirch Malay Curry which has a less creamy texture and is a lot more oily, but the flavor is great. My friend's tikka masala was maybe a bit too sweet but they made it very spicy as requested. Service was pretty good. A small complaint, maybe it was just where we were seated but I got some kind of smell like dishrags or cleaners. I think we were near one of the server's stations. Decor is okay. Not too over-the-top. Lots of empty space, maybe they rearranged everything for lots of social distancing during the pandemic.
