I was on my way to DC from my vacation house. I spent 10 days in my vacation house in the northern neck without any access to Indian food. I was craving to have some Indian food. I came across this one while driving to DC. I looked up their menu in the parking lot and was surprised to see dosa (one of my favorite Indian food) in the menu. I ordered masala dosa and chicken 65. I got my order within 10 minutes from ordering. 4/5 for food as the lentil soup which is called sambar in South Indian language was not as flavorful as I expected. Dosa was decent. Could have been crispier. Chutney was mediocre as well. Chicken 65 was good. Although not authentic but people from various parts of India have their version of chicken 65. Not my favorite but it's not bad. Service was good. Price is nominal. Ambiance is decent as well. They are connected to the Indian grocery story next door. So I was to stop by at the store after dinner to get Indian groceries. Overall not a bad experience. read more

Split review between the two meals we got. We had the chicken tikka tandoori, chicken korma, and garlic naan. The chicken korma was a great portion of food and had great flavor. The garlic naan was cooked perfectly. When it came to the chicken tikka, it was truly deflating how little flavor there was in the meal and little to no flavor in the sauce that was served with it. we stopped in for lunch & were seated promptly and orders taken. started with a beer - always like to have one I haven't tried, and they had a decent selection of American and Indian beers. I tried Flying Horse. not bad. typical American standard style lager. goes well with the food. we tried paneer pakora for an appetizer, which is fried cheese cubes with spices. pretty mild, but tasty. for lunch we had butter chicken and lamb vindaloo. very tasty and well prepared. we've really gotten hooked by the Indian spice palette lately, so we really enjoyed the flavors. there was a bit of a wait to get the check - it seems that the waiter was also the clerk for the Indian market adjacent to the restaurant. that may not be the best plan, though we definitely took advantage of the market to help fill out our spice cabinet!! it's a typical strip mall storefront, so nothing terribly impressive, but some decent art on the walls to enjoy. overall, good food and ok otherwise. read more

My first time trying Indian food and it was an amazing experience. I learned that Indian food is spicy, but I'm thankful that this restaurant allows you to select your spicy level. I tried a 2, but I think I need to go up to level 3.LOL We tried the garlic and regular naan bread. I love naan bread. As an appetizer we ordered the lamb pepper. It was delicious, a little too spicy for me. But it had great flavor. Highly recommend. I had the butter chicken. The chicken was very tender. I will increase my spice level next time. We also ordered the lamb vindaloo. My aunt loves spicy food. She said it was perfect and seasoned perfectly. Our waiter was awesome. Very attentive and answered my many questions. I think he could tell I was a little nervous about my food being too spicy. Lastly, the restaurant is absolutely beautiful. Give them a try. You will not be disappointed. read more

October 23rd 2023 (bday of my fave vegan celebrity, Weird Al) and what better way to celebrate than a fancy, all-vegan Indian dinner with people I love. We sat at a booth w a perfectly laid table, appreciating the heck out of the CLEARLY MARKED VEGAN menu items, enjoyed incredible service from our waitress and the attending manager, and oh my goodness... the FOOD. Came in for dinner the other night and it was us and one other family. Ordered butter chicken, chicken vindaloo, samosa, garlic naan, tomato soup and mulligtwani soup. Service was good, food was ok, butter chicken was on the sour side for me, I had better, the vindaloo, that was my first time having it so can't really judge it. It tasted better than the butter chicken. The rice that came with it was really dried and hard. The only best part of the entire meal was the samosa. I think this might've been my first and only time coming to this restaurant. The food was alright but could've been a little bit better (both meals with lamb were too dry to eat). The worst part of our experience was right after we were given our food, the owner came to our table and gave us the check and put to go boxes and bags all over the table as if to rush us out and say "you're finished" and had the nerve to watch over us and wait for our card to be placed in the checkbook. Most other Indian places I've been to will season their rice with saffron, but this was plane Jane. Naan also wasn't included. Ordered a side of garlic naan, which was good though. Over the years I've read positive reviews about this place, but I was hesitant to stop in, as it's way over-priced and I'm also very picky about Indian food, as I prefer Pakistani food over the typical Indian place, but there have been Indian places that have really impressed me, so I gave it a try for lunch one weekday. They were moderately busy when I went. Service was just 'OK' definitely nothing special nor attentive. They do have a nice menu filled with many items commonly found in Panjabi style cooking, as well as Indian and the "American/English" dishes, like Butter Chicken. I opted to start with vegetable pakora and chicken saag with naan for my entrée. It's crazy that all these places now charge about $3 for a piece of naan, and what irritates me more is that they cut it into quarters and put butter on it. The traditional way to eat it is to rip it into finger-sized pieces as you go and use it as a utensil; cutting it in quarters limits the ability to do this and why put ghee or butter on it? Ask before doing that first! The pakora was the worst I've ever had... Luke warm on the inside, hard and crunchy, no flavor whatsoever and loaded with crunchy, thick dough with green specks inside, which I assume are possibly shredded spinach? This is NOT how pakora is made, nor served. And it came out within a minute of me ordering it, no wonder it was luke warm, it's pre-made and sitting there for people to order - again, not how you make/serve pakora. The green chutney that came with it was boring and bland, it offered bo spice, nor did I get any cilantro or other typical flavors of a green chutney from it. Next up, the Chicken Saag. This was actually somewhat decent. When asked my spice level, I requested medium-hot, but I got mild. The flavor was acceptable, but not even in my top 25. The chicken was decent and tender. My biggest issue was biting into fat when eating pieces of the chicken or worse, biting into a 1" piece of ginger. No Indian nor Pakistani cook/chef ever uses a 1" chunk of ginger, it's either shredded, sliced, or julienned before putting into a dish. The rice that came with it was decent, nothing special. Overall, for $30+ it wasn't worth ¼ of the amount I paid! I definitely won't be returning. And seriously, if you really have a desire for authentic flavors, there are great options nearby; such as Himalayan Heritage for Himalayan style Indian food or Taj for real Indian food or my fav, Sizzling Kabob for Pakistani food. I just can't justify these high prices for what I got. read more

I've eaten here before and after the new management. I can say that it is about the same. This is a sit down, family style served restaurant. Is a good idea for each person to order different dishes to be shared with each other to try new things. The interior is very clean, serene, and well decorated. It's a calming, quiet place to eat with candlelight. You are able to choose your seat and are typically served water immediately. Upon ordering, they organize the flavors and curries by region. I've seen folks not handle spice well and others who love spice enjoy the food here. Just be sure if you truly love spicy food, you let them know, and vise versa. I feel like a lot of folks confusion is that they don't actually know what Indian spicy is and get thrown off. They can create quite spicy dishes! I've eaten their butter chicken, sizzle dishes, vindaloo, paneer, tiki masala, traditional curry, korma, various naan specialties, and especially their mango chutney. We have had them from spicy to mild, and all are what I've expected. All are to my standard, only rivaled by the the mall's food. Overall, 4/5 just because it's not the best Indian cuisine I've eaten in this area, but it's definitely #2 at its worst. I strongly recommend trying this location at least one time. read more

Our problem with Guru was the air quality and handling. Everything was fine until they brought out food for a large party close to us. We've been to lots of Indian restaurants, but whatever vapors emanated from those meals burned our eyes and we couldn't stop coughing. Same impact at other tables as well. Their HVAC had no impact. We had to take the food to go. Once home, the food was good, but takeout is never the same as eating right out of the kitchen. read more

Something has happened to this place, can't tell if it is new staff, or different food supplier? We ordered 3 orders of butter chicken mild and two orders of naan bread. The butter chicken itself was loaded with spices that when you bit into them was "overwhelming". The meal itself had very little flavor but was very spicy. The naan bread was very different as well, not in a good way either but we couldn't figure out what it was. $70 down the garbage disposal, and we won't be going back. I've never eaten Indian food, and in fact largely avoided it until today when a few work friends dragged me to Guru. When we arrived at 12:30pm on a Thursday, the restaurant was empty except for one other table. It is a nice sit-down restaurant with tables comfortably spaced apart, and clean. There was music playing overhead, which I liken to elevator music, but it wasn't bad. My party of three each ordered something different. We also ordered an appetizer and some naan bread. The food came quickly and portions were generous. All entrées were around $14. I was blown away at the taste and smells - likely the most flavorful and welcoming food I've personally ever tasted. I got the Chicken Madras, which said it was made with cilantro and jalapeños. To me, it tasted almost like pineapple. It was glorious. I also ordered a side of steamed vegetables and that too offered unique and wonderful flavors. I could eat this stuff all day and will definitely be coming back. Only four stars because our waiter couldn't seem to muster even conversational sentences, lacked any kind of friendliness, and left us without water much of the time. He also told us the restaurant was closing and we needed to leave. It was 2:15pm, no one else was there, and the hours on the door clearly stated a closing time of 2:30pm. read more

I was in the mood for some amazing butter chicken and garlic naan. I was not disappointed by this place. I believe I had been to their original location a few years back and as I recall, it was pretty amazing back then. I had butter chicken, palak panner, and garlic naan which were seriously amazing!! The best part is that they have a $10 lunch buffet Monday-Friday and $11 on Saturday and Sunday!!! I went here for dinner on a Friday evening and it wasn't super busy. The staff was friendly and attentive. The place was clean and even the bathroom was clean. I'm definitely visiting this place again to try out the lunch buffet. read more

I grew up eating Indian and Thai foods due to my parents being stationed overseas when my dad was in the Navy. My mom traveled to India a few times and brought back with her spices and excitement about the delicious cuisine she experienced. Over the next 50 years our family still enjoys eating ethnic foods and Guru would pass flying colors if my mom ate here!
